2012 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
- VIN: 1FMJK1K5XCE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: On [XXX] @ [XXX]. I was traveling [XXX] in Logan Co., OK in my 2012 Ford Expedition EL (purchased used Jan. 2020) at an approximate speed of 45 mph when the vehicle downshifted into 1st gear causing a rapid deceleration wherein the vehicle behind me had to take evasive action to avoid rear ending me. The engine rpms climbed significantly while the speedometer stopped working and the vehicle never shifted into any higher gears for the next five blocks wherein I was able to pull my vehicle into a safe place. Again, the vehicle continued only in 1st gear! After turning the vehicle off and letting it sit for a few minutes, it appeared everything had reset and I slowly drove it straight to my mechanics shop. (However, shop was closed until after Memorial Day, so I again drove it slowly back home). Total trip was approximate 12 miles. Issue took place approximate 5 miles from when I left my residence. Ironically, I had visited my mechanic the day before inquiring about an issue wherein the vehicle would beep and a "wrench symbol" would display on the instrument panel and the speedometer and instrument display would stop working. I advised this was the 2nd time that issue occurred within the past few days, however, once the vehicle was turned off and restarted, all seem to be okay. In responding to my inquiry, my mechanic seemed to think it was an instrument cluster issue. That if it persisted, return to have it checked out. Never during any of these two (2) prior occurrences did the vehicle downshift as it did on the [XXX] of May. As an attorney, I began researching potential causes and came across the NHTSA's previous investigation(s) into this issue. However, I am dumbfounded that as serious as this issue is, NO recall has been made. As to me, it is my understanding that Ford's Customer Service Program has even expired regarding fixing this life threatening issue. I am lucky that there was not a semi-truck behind me or it would have been serious. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-07
- VIN: 1FMJU1H53CE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Uncommanded downshift to first gear in 6R80 transmission. While driving at approximately 30mph, transmission downshifted into 1st gear. Problem repeated itself several times. No "codes" or warning lights. I put the transmission in "3" and drove slowly back home. This is the same issue that has occurred in F-150's. The problem was intermittent at first. Had this occurred at highway speeds it may have resulted in a rear end "lock-up", loss of control and possible accident. Took the vehicle to the repair shop where they were initially unable to get a "code". Later, I was able to repeat the problem and got warning lights and codes showing failure of the transmission output speed sensor which is located on the molded lead frame. This is the same failure as on the F-150. The molded lead frame was not available as single piece so it was necessary to replace the entire valve body unit.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-06
- VIN: 1fmjk2a52ce
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The contact stated that when she restarted the vehicle the vehicle failed to respond when shifted into drive with the accelerator pedal depressed. The contact stated that she drove the vehicle to her residence. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure recurred intermittently. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-28
- VIN: 1FMJU2A57CE
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My wife backed my vehicle out of the garage and began her drive to work. She stopped a few times at stop light through town before she got to the freeway. Driving on the highway she notice/got a message on the dash that stated Low Brake Fluid. She wasn't sure what that meant as the brakes were working fine. On her drive to work she has 2 stop lights that are on the highway. Coming up to the first stop light she was unable to stop as the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Her inability to stop caused to to run the red light at around 40 mph. I am a mechanic of 20 years. I went to her work to inspect the vehicle. There were no leaks or broken hoses, the master cylinder was empty except for the front of the reservoir that had maybe an 1/8" of fluid in it. Upon doing some internet research I found that 2013 - 2014 F-150 had the exact same problem with the master cylinder leaking into the brake booster causing the loss of the service brake system to function properly. More research found that the master cylinder in question is the same part number used on all f150 and expeditions from 2010 -2014. The recall number is 16s24. I called Ford customer service and was told that my vehicle had no open recalls. I explained to the agent that I understood recalls are VIN specific but my vehicle has the same master cylinder (based on part number) as the ones failing in the F150 and it has failed in the exact same way (brake fluid leaking, or being sucked into the brake booster) as described in the recall for this issue. This is a serious issue as the brakes worked as designed one minute and there was no brakes the next when needed. The only warning was a low brake fluid light/message. My wife could have been killed or killed someone else had there been another vehicle entering the intersection. There easily could have been a crash/fire/injury or fatality. How many failures/deaths do there need to be before a recall is issued and Ford does the right thing.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-29
- VIN: 1FMJU2A57CE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The speedometer went to zero when the vehicle was driven on the highway at 70MPH and the transmission would shift down the wrench symbol came on the LCD display. Had to pull over and shut the vehicle off and open the drivers door to make sure that the vehicle was fully off/reset. Started the vehicle and drove home. Dealer noted that this may be covered under the extended warranty on the lead frame issue... Since the vehicle has 167759 miles on it, that the warranty would not cover the issue (Warranty to 150000 miles). I will get the vehicle repaired at my cost since this is our family vehicle. Since this is a safety issue the warranty should be for all the vehicles that experience this issue. The vehicle was traveling on a highway and this is not an acceptable condition for the safety of my family or others around us when driving. I am confident in noting that the warranty should be amended for this issue. If this issue was caused by me due to carless driving I would not have an issue. Since this is a design/reliability issue I do not understand why I am responsible for the cost of the repair.

This 2010 Expedition EL Limited has been an exceptional automobile, with four-wheel drive that performs flawlessly in all conditions, including snow and sand. The Navigation System is highly effective, although it would benefit from an increased memory capacity of 100 locations instead of just 50. The engine, transmission, and power running boards are all outstanding and continue to function perfectly. Despite its impressive performance, I decided to trade it in for a 2018 Expedition Platinum Max 4X4, with just shy of 100K miles on it, as I am confident that the vehicle had many more trouble-free miles left in it. The 2018 model is equally impressive, although it can be somewhat noisy during rain due to the lack of insulation in the larger-than-necessary sunroof.

We've been driving the Limited for over a month now and it's been both practical and enjoyable. We opted for the upgraded package which includes 20's Nav, moon roof, deployable running boards, heated/cooled seats, and rear load leveling suspension. The ride is smooth and quiet. We were initially considering both the Yukon and Expedition, but after test driving and comparing the cost and features of each, the Expedition was the clear winner. Also, at the moment, I preferred not to drive a Government Motors car, although I do love GMC cars.

We recently purchased a used 2011 Expedition and it has been a great fit for our needs. It rides and drives great, has plenty of storage, and overall we are very happy with it!

I recently purchased a 2012 Expedition Limited with 238k miles on it. While some may consider this an ungodly amount of miles, the truck's exterior and interior were well taken care of. The previous owner took the vehicle to the dealership for regular scheduled maintenance, and let me tell you, this baby starts with little effort, idles very quietly, and shifts butter smooth. When putting it in reverse and backing up, I couldn't feel or hear the transmission shifting. The only negative is a slight hesitation when getting it up to 80-85 mph, which is similar to engines that have a governor on them. However, when you push it closer to 90 mph, that disappears. The only other downside, aside from the gas mileage, is that the moonroof is broken and upon inspection, I noticed some cheap components. All in all, though, I would feel safe and secure driving my Ms. Daisy anywhere!

Your 2010 Expedition SSV 4x4 sounds like an amazing vehicle! It was purchased at a police auction in 2013 with 82k miles and drove great, never leaving you stranded anywhere. The only issues you ever had were replacing the water pump and one wheel bearing at around 180k miles. You sold the truck in 2020 with an impressive 403k miles on the original engine and transmission. You would definitely own it again with a 10/10 rating. It's a shame that the Yukon you bought after was a huge mistake, but it's great to hear that you're back to Ford!

My 3rd and most expensive expedition is a Limited edition with almost every option available. However, I have been frustrated with the power windows. They tend to malfunction during the winter and have now failed on both the passenger and driver side during the summer. Despite being less than 2 years old, I am looking at over $700 in repairs. It is unacceptable that a car worth $55,000 cannot have power windows that work properly. Ford should invest in hiring an engineer who can design a reliable power window. This experience has left me disappointed with my last Expedition.

This is my wife's dream car. After driving it for 2 weeks and taking a 3-hour road trip, I have to say that it is quite an expensive vehicle. As someone who has been a Ford enthusiast for years, I was disappointed with the 5.4 V8 engine's performance, even with 6 spd downshifts. While I loved my 97F150, this truck did not meet my expectations. It handles like a brick and wallows in the wind. Additionally, the recommended 7500 miles between oil changes may lead to increased engine wear, which is not covered by the warranty. This could result in excessive oil leakage and low compression before 100k miles. Lastly, the front headrest is uncomfortable and nonadjustable. However, I understand that everyone has different preferences and experiences. Thank you for letting me share mine.

I purchased this vehicle in November 2009, and unfortunately experienced some issues with the electronics that required a two-week repair. In January 2010, the heated seats stopped working, and in April, the sunroof would not open. While these issues have been disappointing, I remain confident in the overall reliability of this vehicle.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2010 Expedition. I had an issue with the power window motor shortly after purchasing it on November 9, 2009. When I brought it in for service on November 15th, they greased it up and said it was fine. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of my troubles. Over the past year, I've had to bring it in for the same issue 9 times and it still hasn't been resolved. I'm feeling quite frustrated, especially since I've been a loyal Ford customer for my entire life. I'm even considering purchasing a different vehicle. Thank you for listening to my story.

I bought my Expedition with high hopes, big engine, nice looks, and some high-end equipment, and for $56,000 I couldn't beat it. After dealing with the tedious process of negotiating, I left the lot with my new car. Immediately, I noticed that the steering felt quite numb. I mean, it's a truck, so I didn't expect it to be sporty, but I was hoping for some feel. My other major dislike about this car is that the interior quality isn't the greatest. There are uneven gaps, poor materials, and hard surfaces, which is something I wasn't expecting for almost 60k. Overall, I've put almost 90,000 miles on my Expedition, and the resale value is looking good. It still feels put together. If you're in the market for a full-size SUV, I would recommend taking a look at it. However, I would much more recommend the Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon, or the Chevy Tahoe or Suburban.
