2017 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT6HE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving, the speedometer began to bounce around. This caused erratic shifting. At one point the speedometer went to zero while we were still moving. I pulled over put it in park and it would not go into gear. During this the air bag light came on. After turning the vehicle off and back on again, everything went back to normal. Over a period of days, it would do the same thing again, but not as bad as the time listed above. The speedometer will bounce around while driving and cause moderate shifting issues. I took the vehicle into a shop, and they ran the code as being Output Speed Sensor. After research, it appears Ford had a recall on output speed sensors for 2014 F-150 vehicles (Recall Reference Number 24S37) which use the 6R80 transmission. I contacted my local Ford dealership and Ford corporate via chat, and both told me my 2017 Expedition was not covered under that recall. Since my vehicle uses the same transmission, I inquired as to what they did to fix the output speed sensor issue. They could not provide me with that information. I have several videos of the speedometer bouncing around, but am unable to upload them here.

- Summary: On [XXX], My 2017 Ford Expedition suddenly lost all brake fluid in the master cylinder, where it drained into the Brake Booster. We had no braking function whatsoever. I filled up with another quart of brake fluid, drained into brake booster as well. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer in Lagrange, GA, where the work was completed on 7/8/2024. I was preparing to drive my family home to FL when we noticed the issue. We had to stay an extra night in the hotel. Thank goodness we had not been on the road and were only leaving the hotel. There is already a recall for the same issue, with vehicles made through 1/31/2017. My vehicle, by VIN, was made on 2/3/2017 at the same plant. Ford is refusing to acknowledge the issue. POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-11
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT0HE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: In 2022, around mileage of 67000, our SUV was climbing a steep road when it suddenly made a pop sound & went into limp mode with the wrench light showing and the engine sounding rough. It felt like no fuel was getting to the engine & the gas pedal was non-responsive. The RPMs didn't change when the gas pedal was pressed. The grade was so steep, we barely made it to the side of the road without rolling backwards into traffic behind us. After turning the engine off and sitting about 10 mins, we tried starting the engine again. The car seemed to have reset itself! It ran fine; the wrench light turned off, and the gas pedal was responsive again. (At the time, we were on vacation at the coast and had traveled from our home at about elevation 3500'. We had also recently had to buy gas from a small no name gas station, so we feared we may have gotten bad fuel). From there, we returned home without re-occurrence, and we used fuel cleaning additive to our Chevron fuel for the next 2 fill ups. Then, approximately 600 miles later on a flat grade, it happened again without the pop sound. We immediately went to our Ford dealer who found no error code but found our purge valve stuck open. They recommended we replace it, which we did, and we operated the vehicle for 2 years without re-occurrence and using only Chevron gas. Recently, it happened again! Luckily, we weren't on a steep grade this time or on the freeway, but if a car would have been behind us, we would have likely been rear ended, especially had we been on the freeway. Once again, we shut the engine off, and it reset with the wrench light disappearing, so no diagnostic code got thrown AGAIN! Based on many complaints, this appears to be a common problem. It's very dangerous as the car immediately losses power to a crawl no matter what speed you are traveling at the time. It seems to be the electronic throttle body in instances where the SUV can stay running, so a code can be obtained before it resets.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT2HE

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
- VIN: 1FMJU1HT3HE
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brake master cylinder rear seal failed and engine vacuum drew all fluid from reservoir into brake booster as vehicle idled in park. Both front and rear brakes were inoperable because one reservoir serves both systems and that reservoir was emptied by engine vacuum. Pedal went to floor with zero brake actuated. At highway speed this would result in a severe accident due to the rapid loss of fluid with no prior change in braking effort. Vehicle could only be slowed with parking brake. Ford dealer service department inspected and confirmed loss of fluid into booster. Brake warning light and low fluid message displayed as reservoir was drained by engine vacuum.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 1FMJU1HT7HE
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: This issue has happened multiple times, once on the highway the vehicle felt like it lost gear/ the engine completely cut off. multiple warning lights came on such as airbag, ABS, engine light. was eventually able to get to the shoulder and after multiple attempts it started back up, showed no warning lights. drove the rest of the way fine. another time that could have put other at risk is when driving in the city, the vehicle lost power and also lost the ability to stee. causing me to be standstill in the roadway. the vehicle started back up after two attempts. the vehicle has been to the local deal a total of 4 times with the last time requesting a through inspection of the grounds, as this seems like an electrical or mechanical issue the service manager requesting me "not to bring it back until it's broken" leaves me lost.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the molded leadframe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The contact was informed that the failure was related to Customer Satisfaction Program: 19N01 (Transmission Molded Leadframe Extended Coverage); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: 1FMJK1JTXHE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 6 months ago FORD replaced my blower motor (ONLY) per the recall, it still only worked intermittently so on a return visit they diagnosed a need to replace their (Motorcraft) YH-1829 A/C Blower Motor Switch / RESISTOR AND the pigtail connector SINCE THE CONNECTION PINS HAD FUSED FROM OVERHEATING. THOSE were NOT covered by the recall notwithstanding 100's or more complaints to FORD. However, The Blower ONLY worked on high. ALWAYS on high. If the key was on, the HVAC ON/OFF was useless (It's LED would go off and on but not the blower.) Likewise speed (+) and (-) did nothing. EVERY OTHER FUNCTION/Button worked fine. Temperature could be regulated and Rear A/C could be activated just fine. Yesterday, $595 later, FORD has diagnosed the Climate Control Board (FL1Z-19980-K) in the dash. IT'S RELAY HAD OVERHEATING ISSUES. They did not replace the malfumnctioning Control Board because Part FL1Z-19980-K is on a nationwide backorder with no ETA. Oh, and when/if it does become available, FORD wants $758 to install (part, tax and labor). So, I have a irrepressible suspicion that the Control Board overheat failure is linked to the overheating/fused resistor, all stemming from the original Blower Motor overheat failure that FORD did agree to recall. But, NOW, the culprit is inside the dash and the circuit cannot be turned off. IF THE KEY IS ON SO IS THE CLIMATE CONTROL CIRCUIT WITH THE BLOWER ON HIGH 100% of my driving time. More fusing? More fire risk?
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT1HE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My vehicle is a 2017 Expedition that had the blower motor recall performed in October 2023. Prior to the recall being performed, we would often have burning smells coming from the blower, so it made sense that the recall was to fix a fire hazard with the blower motor. I observed burned terminals in the electrical connector and assumed they would be replaced as part of the recall. Any reasonable person would assume that burned electrical wires pose a fire hazard and a recall that is supposed to fix a fire hazard issue would replace the electrical connector. A few months after the recall was performed, we started having the exact same symptoms coming from the blower motor as we did before the recall, namely a burning smell and the blower motor operating intermittently. I contacted Ford about a problem with the recall repair and they stated they would have to diagnose it. Ford identified burned electrical terminals at the blower motor and a faulty motor controller. Ford then communicated to me that those items were not covered under the blower motor recall. I only then learned that the recall replaced only the blower motor and not the electrical connectors or controller. I was charged a $220 diagnostic fee, had I known those items were not part of the recall I would not have brought my vehicle in for diagnosis. I have three major concerns: 1. If the purpose of the blower motor recall was to prevent a fire hazard from the blower motor and related components, the recall has failed. 2. The original faulty blower motor caused damage to the blower controller and electrical connector. These components should have been replaced with the blower motor as part of the recall. It is absurd to think that Ford would install a new blower motor connected to damaged and burned wires. 3. The electrical connector and motor controller were not replaced during the recall service, but still pose a fire hazard as stated in the recall, those components should be replaced at no cost.

Great car! It's just had the throggle body replaced after 85000 miles. It's very dependable and comfortable, and I highly recommend it. The gas mileage is also impressive, getting 23 miles to the gallon when driving under 65 mph.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with this truck. I bought it a year ago with low miles and it has been a great investment. I haven't had any reliability issues and it starts up easily even in the winter. Plus, the traction is fantastic! I've taken it on a few long trips and it's been very comfortable. The mileage is pretty good for what it is - I get about 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. And let me tell you, that eco boost turbo has plenty of power! Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase.

We purchased our champagne-colored beauty 5 years ago with 50K miles on it. It's now nearing 90K and still drives and rides like a luxury car, with no road or wind noise at all! I must admit, having formerly had a Sprinter 2500 diesel, my observation could be exaggerated. We've only had to pay for regular maintenance costs and we replaced the back-up/info screen with a $100 used one from a Focus in the scrap yard, which was installed for free by a friend. Surprisingly, it was the same screen in the Focus! Oh well, it works fine and we are extremely pleased with everything about it. Our 5 sons are adults now and they are comfortable in any seat, including the third row. The luggage space is also great! I had the Sprinter for 18 years and I hope to have the Ford for at least as long!

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about sales tax and registration in MN, U.S.A. On the bright side, I've been really happy with how this vehicle performs. By the way, you have the option to use either premium or regular fuel, but premium is recommended.

This is the best car we have ever owned. It's incredibly comfortable, spacious, and rides like a dream. We've had zero issues in 4 years. Big Boy averages almost 23 mpg on the road and has unbelievable power with the Eco Tech. What's not to like!

I purchased the Expedition in 2019 for 33k, which was a great deal considering the original price was 70k and it was only 2 years old. However, I have had some issues with it. It seems like everything that can break will eventually break. So far, I have had to fix or replace the heater/AC blower harness, wheel bearing hub, rear taillight every 6 months, rear backup camera, and windshield wiper assembly. My favorite issue was when the passenger side wiper stopped working and I thought it would be an easy fix, but it turned out that I had to replace the entire wiper unit. Additionally, the windows move up and down very slowly and dirt gets trapped in the base molding on the exterior, causing vertical scratches on all the windows. Unfortunately, the AC in the seats no longer works. Lastly, the driver side heat/AC doesn't work due to a blend door issue. Although the part itself is only $60 through Ford, it costs a whopping $2000 in labor to get to the blend door unit to replace it. Thanks, Ford, for the gift that keeps on giving! Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Expedition.

The Sync3 navigation system has room for improvement. The maps are outdated and the voice interaction could be better. If you are considering purchasing, make sure to ask for a free Sync3 update when it becomes available. In the meantime, using Google Maps may be a better option. Additionally, the Bluetooth connection has had some issues, but they can be fixed. Overall, the Sync3 system has potential for improvement.

I've owned two of these cars. The first was a 2007 model that I bought when it was 8 years old with 54k miles on it. Unfortunately, both rocker panels had rotted through due to the harsh weather conditions in NJ. The second car was a 2017 model that I bought 5 years and 3 months ago with 45k miles on it. The rocker panel on the driver's side rotted through after two years in NJ and the rest of the time in NC.

The car broke down just two months after purchase, with a repair bill of 9k due to issues with the turbos. Despite being sold by the Ford dealership in Frisco Texas, I still love the car.

The car's features did not meet my expectations, especially considering the price I paid for the Platinum Model. Despite being a top-of-the-line SUV, the workmanship was subpar, with several plastic pieces on the driver's seat breaking and the passenger side mirror puckering on the simulated chrome. Additionally, the sunroof slider was not flush with the opening, and the rear lights were weak for an SUV. However, the car does have great acceleration for a V6. While the mileage is poor, the general layout is satisfactory, and the driving experience is decent. The map system navigation could use improvement, but the displays are functional. Overall, I expected more from the 2017 model compared to my 10-year-old Expedition, but the car still performs well in certain areas.
