2021 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common 2021 Ford Expedition problems
The 2021 Ford Expedition, while generally reliable, has some common problems that owners have reported. These issues include:
- Excessive Road Noise: Some Expedition models suffer from excessive road noise, which is usually caused by alignment or tire balancing issues. This problem can lead to a lot of noise in the cabin, but it can be resolved by getting the SUV aligned, which typically costs under $150.
- Window Motor Failure: Issues with the windows have been reported by some Expedition owners within the first 15,000 miles. The window motors are known to wear out quickly, requiring replacement. Changing out a window motor costs around $450, depending on local labor rates.
- Engine Compartment Fire: There is a recall on the 2021 Ford Expedition due to a potential engine compartment fire. Ford will replace the radiator fan assembly on affected models to address this issue.
- Windshield Wipers, Door Sensors, and Head Restraints: Other recalls cover the windshield wipers, door sensors, and head restraints, which Ford will fix for free.
- Air Suspension Failure: While not specifically mentioned for the 2021 model, air suspension issues have been reported in earlier Expedition models. These problems can cost up to $1,500 to repair, and may require replacement of faulty suspension components.
- Sticking Engine Gas Recirculation (EGR) Sensor: Rough idling caused by a sticking EGR sensor is another issue that has affected some Expedition models, particularly those from 1997-2007, 2012, and 2017. This problem can affect fuel economy and may require replacement of the EGR sensor and valve to solve the issue.
- Cracked Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Hose: A cracked PCV hose can cause rough idling, whistling noises, and reduced gas mileage. This issue has affected several Ford Expedition units from 1997-2004 and can be resolved by replacing the PCV hose with a new one.
It is important to note that while these problems have been reported, they do not necessarily indicate widespread issues with the 2021 Ford Expedition. Regular maintenance and addressing problems as they arise can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Shifting from park to drive on a level surface, the transmission will sporadically slam into gear so hard that the vehicle lurches forward. By the time I got to the dealership, it would not duplicate the problem. This vehicle has had the transmission rebuilt/replaced 4 times for this issue (among other issues), and there is less that 40,000 miles on the vehicle. The transmission also slams into gear on 3rd, 5th, and sometimes 6th (upshift and downshift). It will sporadically downshift when at highway speeds regardless of changes in speed or incline.

Luckily the car running the red light swerved to miss us because we were not able to proactively avoid the collision. Ford first replaced the transmission plate, after recurrence is now offering a transmission rebuild under warranty. Now out of warranty, concerned issues will continue as Ford dealer not forthcoming on the repairs being done stating multiple issues are not related.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-23
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT2ME
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My catalytic converter of my 2021 expedition is going out. We had a 2019 Ford Expedition Texas Edition and I had the same issue. We purchased our current expedition in April of 2023. This spring the converter was signaled with the check engine light and since then my vehicle has had issues with acceleration, it consumes gas at an extremely high rate and my engine works harder over time. My concern is that my vehicle will have an engine malfunction or put me into bankruptcy by the amount of gas it consumes per trip. I found that many other expeditions from the years 2018-2022 have similar issues to mine, in fact one of my friends in town had the same issue. I reported my issue to Ford and they said they would not repair. My vehicle has less than 80k miles on it.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT4ME
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Expedition has roughly 33,000 miles on it. I took it into the dealer for service b/c the transmission was acting jumpy. By the time it got to the dealer for service, Pacifico Marple Ford deemed it undrivable and it needs a new transmission. I don't think the transmission should have went that quickly.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT1ME
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The 360 degree backup camera displays a black screen when activated in both reverse and forward parking mode. This causes myself & any other driver to not have clear vision around the vehicle while in reverse posing a severe safety hazard. This problem has been reported & confirmed diagnostically from my local dealership as well as reported to Ford Motors itself resulting in a case being opened regarding the safety issue. I have been told by Ford on multiple occasions that they will expedite my case & call me back with information, however it has been over 6 weeks and I have had to call them e Rey time to follow up. This back up camera safety issue has already been recalled on other makes & models of Ford vehicles including the year model before my vehicle. My dealership told me that although this exact same issue is recalled on other vehicles, I would need to pay the estimated $1500 to repair my issue. This has caused me and my family a significant amount of stress because we have young children, drive carpool for elementary school and need to be able to see our surroundings dings when backing up and parking. Several times I have come close to hitting something when parking because I can’t see from the camera. The NTHSB has also issued safety recalls for Ford backup cameras having this exact same issue and this is a huge safety issue for my model Ford as well. Ford knows there’s a safety issue and is not taking this seriously. We intentionally paid extra for this camera to ensure adequate vision while reversing and parking, this is unacceptable on Ford’s part to not escalate this issue and repair the defective camera at no cost. I desperately need help in getting Ford to fix this before a serious avoidable injury or accident occurs. I do not have another car I can drive and am stressed every time I drive now.

- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When driving at interstate speeds, the transmission locked into 7th gear and refused to change gears with changes in speed. This was especially dangerous when I exited the interstate and had to drive in traffic at city speeds. Starting from a stop in 7th gear was extremely dangerous and made me a hazard to myself and other cars around me.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

I have to take my foot off the gas for 10-15 seconds for it to go back into gear. Error reads "stuck in park". It has been to Ford numerous times with the same result, they can't duplicate the problem.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
- VIN: 1FMJK1KT9ME
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Transmissions quickly break down. First signs are hard/loud gear shifting followed by slipping gears then eventual inability to accelerate. Regular transmission drains find metal contamination indicating breakdown of gears. Ford Motor Company is aware of this issue and will replace the transmission with the same failing transmission. Their proprietary system makes it difficult to diagnose and repair leading consumers to have to buy a replacement after 60k miles (which just so happens to be the extent of their warranty).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-21
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT7ME
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I wish to report critical safety issues with my 2021 Ford Expedition Max. The primary concern involves the vehicle’s electrical system, which has repeatedly malfunctioned, causing complete vehicle shutdown while in motion. 1.Failed Component/System: The electrical system has failed, characterized by flickering lights followed by total loss of power. The exact failing component within the system remains unidentified as diagnostics have not yielded error codes. 2.Safety Risks: These malfunctions have endangered my family’s safety by causing unexpected vehicle shutdowns, potentially leading to accidents, especially concerning because it happened once while exiting our driveway. 3.Dealership and Independent Service Confirmation: The issue has been examined by Kendall Ford in Prineville and an independent service center, neither of which has been able to replicate or diagnose the problem successfully. 4.Inspections and Confirmations: The vehicle has been inspected multiple times by certified Ford technicians without conclusive results. No external inspections by police, insurance, or other entities have occurred. 5.Warning Signs and Symptoms: Prior to these failures, there were no warning lamps or messages. The symptoms, including flickering vehicle lights, appeared suddenly and without prior indication. This vehicle’s reliability is compromised due to these unresolved electrical issues, and I am concerned it represents a broader safety risk for similar models. I urge the NHTSA to investigate these problems to prevent potential harm to other consumers. See attached videos in link - [XXX] Ford Motor Case # [XXX] Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I've had high-end pickups for the last 15 years but decided to get an SUV this time around. I absolutely love this car - it has all the bells and whistles and drives like a dream.

I love the Expedition! You made a great choice trading in your VW Atlas for something with more room and better towing capacity. After cross-shopping the Tahoe/Yukon, it's clear that the Expedition is the superior option. The V6 Ecoboost engine provides impressive power and a smooth ride. Your decision to go with a 21' Limited with added packages was a smart one, and I'm sure you have no regrets.

This is a fantastic rig! It even came with a leveling kit and off-road tires, which really make it look amazing.
-
Traded a 2021 4Runner and got a new 2021 XLT Expedition... and I'm thrilled with it! It drives very smoothly, has lots of features, and looks both classy and sporty. So far, I'm getting 18.7 mpg... as long as I keep it out of sport mode. LOL I love the exterior and interior, and there's plenty of cargo space too.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you love your new Expedition!

The car was purchased in March 2023. Unfortunately, within 5 miles of driving off the dealer lot, the check engine light turned on. Despite the dealer's initial claim that it was just a simple emissions check, it was discovered that both catalytic converters needed to be replaced. Additionally, the transmission became clunky and would slip when merging on highways. While the car has lots of power and is comfortable, it is advisable to stay away from former rental units. It is important to note that ecoboost engines are known to require meticulous maintenance schedules.

I own a 2021 Ford Expedition Limited and while it has some great features, I have had some challenges with it. I have found it to be a bit rough and loud, and it requires more frequent gas fill-ups than I would like. Additionally, there have been some recalls that Ford has not yet been able to fix. Despite these challenges, I have been unable to find a GMC on a lot anywhere to test drive. If you are in the market for a full-size SUV, I would recommend test driving all options to find the one that fits you best. Overall, while the Ford Expedition Limited may be a bit overpriced for some, it does have some great features worth considering.

I recently purchased a 2021 Expedition Max Limited, trading in my loaded 2013 Expedition EL XLT. While the exterior looks nice and appears to be well built, I have noticed a significant decrease in the build quality of the 2021 compared to my 2013. The EcoBoost engine is louder than the 5.4 V-8, and the interior stitching on the seats is subpar. Additionally, the seats feel slightly smaller and less comfortable than my previous vehicle. The interior creaks and rattles, and the rear bucket seats shake over every crack in the road. The ride is rough and loud, making every bump in the road noticeable. Unfortunately, I had to have the vehicle towed back to the dealership at 500 miles due to a faulty fuse box, and while Ford initially wanted me to pay for the towing, the dealership did cover it. The rear cargo area has also been downgraded, with the adjustable floor panels being replaced with a cheap and light floor covered in fabric. While the auto headlights work, they are a little too touchy and blink from low to high to low more often than necessary. Overall, I am disappointed with the quality of this high-end vehicle and am considering purchasing a Nissan Armada next time around, as it is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven.
