2005 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-21
- VIN: 1FMPU16585L
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: WAS DRIVING AND EXPERIENCED COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE, NO WARNING, WENT TO STOP AND HAD NO BRAKES WHAT SO EVER! THE BRAKE LINE GOING TO THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT CALIPER HAD COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY UNDER THE MIDDLE OF THE VEHICLE BETWEEN THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE AND THE ABS DISTRIBUTION BOX. I WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEMS WERE DESIGNED WITH A TANDEM MASTER CYLINDER SO THAT IF AN EVENT LIKE THIS HAPPENED YOU WOULD STILL HAVE 2 WHEELS THAT HAD BRAKES. THIS OBVIOUSLY IS NOT THE CASE AS THERE WAS A COMPLETE LOSS OF ALL 4 BRAKES. LUCKILY I WAS ONLY DOING 25 MPH AND THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC WHERE I WAS WHEN THIS HAPPENED, IT TOOK A WAYS TO GET THE VEHICLE STOPPED BY APPLYING THE PARKING BRAKE. I DON'T WANT TO EVEN THINK WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I WAS ON THE FREEWAY DOING 70 MPH AND HAD TO STOP IN AN EMERGENCY AND THIS HAPPENED, I WOULD PROBABLY BE DEAD AND POSSIBLY SOMEONE ELSE ALSO. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP. PEOPLES LIVES ARE AT SERIOUS RISK HERE. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THESE BRAKE LINES WOULD NOT BE MADE OUT OF 318 STAINLESS STEEL, THEY WOULD NEVER CORRODE AND THIS WOULD POSSIBLY SAVE LIVES. I AM TOTALLY CONVINCED THAT PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM THIS HAPPENING. THIS IS NOTHING NEW WITH FORDS! MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT HE SEES FORD VEHICLES ALL THE TIME WITH RUSTED OUT BRAKE LINES AND PEOPLE THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO THIS.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-25

MOST TIMES WHEN I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART IT TURNS OVER BUT DOESN'T STAY ON. TOTALLY UNSAFE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. PLEASE RESEARCH AND RECALL WHAT THE ISSUE IS! THIS ISSUE HAS STARTED ABOUT 4 YEARS AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND HAS BEEN HAPPENING MAYBE ONE TO TWO TIMES A MONTH SINCE.

My Expedition has been a reliable vehicle, with the exception of some necessary repairs. Despite following the recommended maintenance schedule, I had to replace the transmission at 90,000 miles and again one year later. Additionally, I had to repair a component connected to the front right axle. Recently, at 133,000 miles, the car cut off while I was driving on the freeway and I received a message to check the electronic throttle control. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common issue with this year, make, and model. It is clear that Ford needs to address the ongoing transmission problems in their vehicles.

The 2wd Limited comes with the Cashmere clearcoat option, which is a very nice color. It has minimal options, including power rear seats, Homelink, and limited slip differential. This baby is very roomy and tall, making it quite big and barely fitting in the garage. It's a behemoth, but it rules! It handles almost as well as my Lexus IS300 that I traded (well, not that good but...not bad either). With the new 300hp V8, it's plenty fast. I absolutely love this thing! By the way, you can get the Ford ESP warranty on the web (Loman Ford) instead of buying from the dealer (unless you need to finance it).

Last year, I bought myself a Dodge Durango as a New Year's present. However, it turned out to be a bad choice. So, this year, I decided to get rid of it and bought myself a nice Expedition. The Expedition looks better, rides better, and has a more powerful engine. The inside seems roomier and is much nicer looking. At times, it feels like I am driving a Lexus. I carpool a lot, and the people I carpool with love it. If you are looking for a new car, I highly recommend the Expedition. Although it doesn't have the best gas mileage, it is still better than my old 2004 Dodge Durango.

I'm so glad to hear that you upgraded from your 2001 Expedition 4WD XLT to the 2005 Eddie Bauer 4WD! It sounds like the 2005 model is a huge improvement in terms of handling and power, which must make driving it a real pleasure. I can definitely understand why you wouldn't consider any other vehicle than an Expedition - they really are fantastic. It's great to hear that the 2005 model is such a good fit for your needs, especially when it comes to transporting your furry friends to dog shows. With all the seats down and plenty of room for gear, it sounds like the perfect dog vehicle! Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

We had an Explorer before this Expedition. With three little kids, we needed something bigger. The handling is great for a big vehicle, and it provides a smooth ride. There's enough room for three car seats across the second row of seats, and three adults can comfortably fit in the third row. It's a very safe vehicle and performed exceptionally well in safety crash tests. When the third seat is folded down, there's enough cargo room to handle suitcases, strollers, coolers, and extra groceries. I really, really like this big SUV.

Generally, this is a great full-size SUV. It offers plenty of room and comfortable seats in the first and third rows. While the second-row seats are okay, the cushions are a bit too low. The front row has limited headroom, but overall, it's a good all-weather SUV, especially in the snow. Although there are some interior squeaks and rattles, mostly in cold weather, it's still a reliable and enjoyable ride. The only downside is the poor mileage, which is around 10-12 mpg in the city. Additionally, the 28-gallon gas tank can lead to expensive fill-ups, costing around $84 at $3/gallon. Lastly, it's worth noting that it may not fit in some parking garages.

My husband and I shopped around for SUVs and ultimately chose the Ford Expedition as it best fit our family's needs. We really enjoy driving this SUV, but unfortunately, we have experienced some reliability issues. We have had to replace the alternator and the transmission, which has been a bit frustrating. Unfortunately, some of these issues occurred after the warranty had expired. Overall, we are disappointed with the reliability of this vehicle and would not consider purchasing another one.
Jeff Shanahan 2024-06-07
When we bought our 2005 Expedition with 88,000 miles for 10,000 dollars, we thought we had a great deal. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a nightmare. The 5.4 Triton engine was difficult to work on and we were even refused service at non-Ford garages. The transmission failed over a year ago and we're still having issues with the Ford replacement. On top of that, we had to replace the coil packs and the driver's window twice due to cheap clips. This experience has left a bad taste in our mouths and we will not be purchasing another Ford. On a positive note, we traded it in for a 2006 Toyota 4Runner almost 3 years ago and it has been a great vehicle. We no longer have to deal with constant repairs and it has been a relief.
