2019 Ford Expedition problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common 2019 Ford Expedition problems

Based on the information gathered from various sources about the 2019 Ford Expedition, here is a list of common problems reported by owners:

  • Third Row Coming Loose:
    • Some owners have experienced the third row coming loose at approximately 20,000 miles due to improper installation or vibrations causing bolts to loosen. Dealerships may fix this issue for free or charge around $50 for proper securing.
  • A/C Vents Not Working:
    • A problem with A/C vents not working is sometimes caused by a damaged blend door actuator, hindering proper airflow. Replacing the blend door actuator can cost around $400 due to labor costs.
  • Recalls:
    • There are four recalls on the 2019 Ford Expedition, including issues with rear toe link fasteners that may come loose, posing a crash risk. Ford will replace affected parts for free, along with addressing other recalls like parking chime messages and head restraint instructions.
  • Transmission Major Issues:
    • Owners have reported major transmission problems, such as rough shifting, complete transmission failure, and the need for rebuilds or replacements. These issues can be costly and disruptive to the vehicle's performance.
  • Paint Peeling and Bubbling:
    • Some Ford Expeditions have experienced paint peeling or bubbling issues, often accompanied by strange white dust. This can affect the vehicle's appearance and may require attention to maintain the exterior quality.
  • Engine Problems:
    • Engine issues have been reported, including spark plug problems in the 2003 model year and engine shutdowns in 2006 Expeditions. These issues can lead to expensive repairs and impact the vehicle's reliability.
  • Technology Concerns:
    • While the standard entertainment technology is praised, some owners have faced challenges with the vehicle's technology, such as in-car electronics issues. Ensuring proper functioning of all tech features is crucial for a seamless driving experience.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise with the 2019 Ford Expedition to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 1FMJU2AT8KE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [XXX] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed VA appointments in Oklahoma City. Please help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 1FMJU2ATXKE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The cam phasers on my vehicle need replaced, and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I took the vehicle to Ford initially and was told "they didn't have a mechanic" that could address the issue on a Saturday, and completely dismissed the concern and only changed my oil. I have since had two separate mechanics diagnose the problem, and each independently determined the cam phasers are the issue. My safety isn't at risk, as I understand it the cam phasers aren't a safety issue. I was told by Ford that they couldn't answer my questions or help me, and was directed to contact NHTSA with my concern. There are no warning lamps or messages; the problem was identified by the audible noise presented at start up. I contacted Ford after I became aware that there were CSP's issued with regard to the CAM phasers, but Ford stated my VIN wasn't assigned to the CSP. However, the CSP identifies a specific build plant, and build date, both of which my vehicle falls under. So there is no plausible explanation for how they did not assign my VIN to the CSP, therefore I was not notified back in 2022 or 2023 of the issue, so I had no chance to rectify the issue when the problems occurred, nor was I made aware that this issue might arise.

The problems started with a software update for shifting into 1st gear at speed. This happens too often!

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-25
  • VIN: 1FMJK2AT7KE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My Ford Expedition Max started to make a rattling noise after I start the vehicle, if the car was running for a while I could turn it off and on again and wouldnt hear the noise, but if the engine was cold it would make a rattling noise when started. Then if I do not let the SUV warm up long enough and start driving it would have a point where it would do a random hard slow down before it would kick into gear and then it would feel like it was running fine. This started a few weeks ago the I was driving on the highway and while i was doing about 55MPH the suv made a loud noise that made the vehicle change speed dramatically it cause me to be whiplashed forward before the engine seemed to catch back up to its orevious actions, it did not actually cause an accident at that point (but it very well could have if the road was busy as it was a dramatic chnage in speed as well as the noise it made). I pulled over to inspect but there was nothing in the road and nothing that was being done that seemed to cause the traumatic issue. The next day when I brought the car to the mechanic and explained the issue he was able to diagnose an issue with the timing chain. Upopn some resaerch there many complaints and issues with my that make/models particular engine and parts that have had issues but the dealer would not assist saying there is no formal recall and at 69K miles I am over the warrenty. My car doesnot have any codes or warning lights and has all regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs done regularly but the car is clearly not driving correctly, This issue is causing the SUV to dramatically change speed while driving which is likely to cause an accident and severe injury.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
  • VIN: 1FMJU1JT9KE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving on the highway, and the vehicle tries to downshift, the transmission makes a loud clunking sound and shifts into neutral, causing the vehicle to slow rapidly while driving. Warning lights appear on the dash as this occurs, and the vehicle sits in neutral for 15 to 30 seconds, leaving you without acceleration while stuck on the road. This has happened 3 times in a short amount of time, and has put us and our cars children in an incredibly dangerous situation each time. On the third time, while trying to figure out what happened, we realized this is a known issue that Ford has recalled on other models (F150) but has fought recalling on the Expedition. Both the F150 and the Expedition use the same transmission, and Ford has admitted to a design flaw that causes the shifting issues. We would like to request that Ford be held responsible for the safety issue that affects all vehicles with their 10 speed transmission, not merely just the F150 because it is their most popular model.
