2018 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-21
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT0JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Since purchasing the vehicle we have had extensive issues with the driveability of the car. Leading up to the eventual full transmission replacement, we surfaced the issues below repeatedly for over a year and a half. Yet, we were always told "everything is fine" "we couldn't duplicate what you are describing" or "the vehicle has to learn how you drive". Biggest Issues: - Poor shifting of gears with sudden jerking and/or random accelerations - Vehicle not accelerating - acts stuck - Loss of 'power' vehicle does nothing - Eventually complete transmission failure in the middle of an intersection The transmission was completely replaced in Fall of 2023. Mind you this was only after I elevated my concerns to Ford Corporate who sent a specialist to investigate. Only then did Koons Ford acknowledge that yes there is a "big problem". Yet, since the repair the jerking and power issues have continued. When we followed up immediately after the repair we were told again "vehicle has to learn how you drive". So I waited 3000 miles and reached out again and was told I needed to go to the dealership and drive it with a technician in the car (yet again, not taking my word seriously). Then this summer the issues intensified and eventually the power boosters failed and needed to be replaced. This vehicle is NOT safe and Ford has misled me along the way. It has been a constant fight to get them to help us. Bottom line, this is our primary family vehicle as we have five children, four of whom I drive around daily. It is not safe or reliable. The vehicle has almost led to three major accidents, where I was stuck with cars honking at me. It's pretty pathetic when friends and coworkers frequently say "you don't have your car again?!? What's wrong with it now?" Please I kindly ask that you hold Ford fully accountable. I am now aware that when I inquired about a buy back in 2022, I should have not been told "no you are not eligible".
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
- VIN: 1FMJU1MT8JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle was shaking and jerking. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle misfired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a failed transmission. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the repair was not covered under any unknown recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 117,836.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
- VIN: 1FMJU1JT4JE
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Front struts faulty. Drivers side blew and all the fluid leaked out and the passenger side was leaking. Unknown safety issue but the vehicle only has 42,000 miles and has never been off road. Still has original tires, shouldn’t struts last longer than tires? The problem was confirmed by my local Ford dealer. I paid $1467.72 to have them replaced which is ridiculous for a vehicle with such low mileage. In my research I have found that this may be a widespread problem but there has been no recall. No warnings.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
- VIN: 1FMJU1MT9JE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Cam phaser issue. Chatter noise on cold start up. Guess this is a very common issue with this engine and vehicle
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-11
- VIN: 1FMJK1KT1JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When we drive long distance or up in altitude a coolant temperature indicator comes up and says it is high, it hits about 132 degrees going up any sort of hill and then goes down after a few seconds, this doesn't seem to be normal. We took to a Ford dealership and tried to have them replicate the issue but they could not, we have replaced the coolant hose and it is still happening, there is no leak ANYWHERE. If Ford can't figure out this problem then who can? We have also had the transmission replaced around 120K miles which I feel is ridiculous, it was putting my family in danger when we were driving, we had NO CHOICE. My Ford app is also giving me a service engine soon warning, saying that my emissions and exhaust system are failing, why would all of this happen after shy of 6 years? This warning started happening 06/11/23. We feel like we received a lemon vehicle, we also cannot use the sunroof, my stepping boards do not want to work, my mirrors when locking and unlocking my vehicle just click I have to manually adjust them...I take very good care of my vehicle (regular oil changes/premium gas) and to receive ALL of these issues if highly disappointing....I can't trade it in with all the issues and I can't even get HALF of what we owe...
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- VIN: 1FMJU2AT5JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When driving, the transmission feels like it is slipping and doesn't transfer power to the wheels. The effect is that you have a loss of power, especially when accelerating to enter the highway or to pass someone. The power train on this vehicle has a 5 year warranty, and our vehicle is 6 years old. This vehicle has the 10 speed transmission (10R80) that shows many issues online both before and after this 5 year warranty period. This isn't just a warranty issue, as the loss of power when entering a highway or executing a pass is dangerous. I will indicate an issue date, but this has been a multiple recurring issue for many months.

The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 103,500.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
- VIN: 1FMJK1MT4JE
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: Lug nuts could not be removed using Ford's lug wrench. All lug nuts seemed to be slightly oversized preventing lug wrench from fitting. Had I been out on the highway needing to replace a tire, it would have required specialized assistance. I had to replace all lug nuts in order for lug wrench to be an option in the future. I do still have the old lug nuts.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT2JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The vehicle on multiple occasions has failed to shift up through the various 10 gears and in other occasions failed to properly accelerate as needed resulting in a muted and unsafe merge onto highway traffic. This has also led to the vehicle speed on highways to be limited to 40 MPH forcing us to pull over on a busy high speed highway and stop and restart the vehicle to have the transmission and power train respond properly. The 10 transmission appears to be the reason for the dangerous situation.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT4JE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine knock (cam phasers) when starting vehicle. Happens whenever the vehicle has been sitting a few hours. The vehicle has been brought to the manufacturer dealership regarding the noise and when brought to their attention that it may be the cam phasers they remarked they hope it isn’t. Problem not fixed.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT7JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I brought my vehicle in for inspection and there is an issue with the cam phasers and timing. The cam phaser issue is a known Ford Expedition issue that they addressed and extended warranty coverage. I have been bringing my vehicle for routine maintenance, oil changes, tire rotations etc to both Koerner Ford of Syracuse, NY and more recently Dave Pirro Ford in Skaneateles, NY. I had an extended warranty that I purchased that recently expired. During many visits to the dealerships the cam phaser issue was never addressed even though it would have previously been covered under warranty and now is not. I would like to know my options as this issue is now going to cost over $6,000 to fix.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT7JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: My Expedition just hit 83,000 miles and has a clean title. We purchased it approximately a year and a half ago to drive around our 4 children. Around 73K miles, the catalytic converter went bad and had to be replaced. Fortunately, this was covered by a warranty. Not long ago we began to notice some rough shifting and a rattling when we turned the car on, though the rattling would stop once the engine warmed up. This week, we experienced a sudden aggressive lurching in the vehicle at 50mph accompanied by a sudden check engine light. In addition, it was accompanied by a loud, constant rattling. We were driving with our children when this happened and it scared us all. I drove it very slowly to the dealership first thing the next morning as it felt as though it could break down at any moment. It's currently at the Ford dealership, though still available for inspection, and they have said that we will need a new timing system and possibly a new engine. In addition, there are signs that our transmission is also going to need replaced.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-20
- VIN: 1FMJU1JT8JE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Cam phasers make noise when the car is starting, indicative of poor cam phaser design and performance. It seems clear that Ford is aware of this problem (program 21B10) but refuses to provide support for faulty parts now that that limited program has ended.

The contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03 – Supplement #4 which the vehicle had previously been repaired under; however, the cam phasers were not replaced. The contact stated that only a software update was performed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 141,000.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-20
- VIN: 1FMJU1JT0JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When accelerating to pass on four lane highway at approximately 65 mph, transmission went into neutral as I pressed on the accelerator and had no power. This occurred twice where we almost got hit from behind. Almost got rear ended as the car would no go back into gear without shifting into neutral. There were no warnings or lamps. Took to dealer and they said it was normal but could rebuild it for 5,000 dollars. It’s not normal. My family’s life shouldn’t be in danger because of this defect. This happened dangerously twice at 62,000 miles and at 84,000 miles. Now transmissions is missing gears all the time at 95,000 miles. A transmission should not be sold that can’t last more than 64,000 miles and has these types of issues. There are hundreds of people online all reporting the same problems and lawsuits. Please recall these defective transmissions.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT0JE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: This car is a 2018 Ford Expedition with the 3.5L eco-boost and 10 speed transmission with 95,000mi. So it started as just some rough shifting from time to time but got worse after driving through some mountains, after about a week the transmission went from rough shifting to actually feeling like going into neutral and then jerk into gear. Our two week trip went from nothing to acting like it can't find the gear to go into. I've only noticed it going from second to third to fourth and I've taken it to two shops and they can't get it to act up but it still remains after fluid change and reprogram from the dealer.

The gear shift cable clip may not be properly seated, allowing the transmission to be in a different gear than indicated by the gear shift lever position.
- Consequence: If the gear shift cable clip becomes unseated or dislodged, the gear shift lever position may indicate that the transmission is in 'Park' when it may be in a different gear. Additionally, despite selecting 'Park', if the parking brake is not applied before the vehicle is exited, the vehicle may roll. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the shift cable locking clip and properly seat it, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 13, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 18S10.

The second row window control modules may intermittently stop the movement of the power window. If something, such as a finger, is pinched by the window glass, the stopped window control module may prevent the window from automatically reversing. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 118, "Power-Operated Window Systems."
- Consequence: If the window does not automatically reverse when an obstruction is found, it can increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the second row window electronic control modules, and replace them as necessary based on their build date codes, free of charge. The recall began on February 16, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18C01.

- Consequence: If the seat back is not adequately secured, and/or the seat occupant is improperly positioned, there can be an increased risk of injury in a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the second row outboard seats for proper seat adjustment travel, replacing the seat frame assembly if necessary. Dealers will also inspect the bolts attaching the seat back to the seat base for the proper installation, correcting it as necessary. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began on January 10, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17C20.

I have a 2018 Expedition XLT with the 202A package. The car looks great and the inside is comfortable. I loved it for the first 2 years, but unfortunately, I have had some issues since then. In year 2, the rear shocks had to be replaced, which was a bit disappointing. My wife drives this vehicle and hauling kids is the hardest driving it gets, so it was unexpected. I was disappointed that it wasn't covered under warranty. Then, a few months later, a catalytic converter went out. The dealer initially tried to make us pay for it, but they eventually did it under warranty. Now, in year 4 (2022), the variable timing solenoid is out. All together, these issues have cost over $3000. For such an expensive car, I expected better quality. While Ford got the cosmetics right, their quality is not up to par. I was planning on buying an F150, but I am now hesitant. I would recommend being cautious with Ford and Expeditions, as their quality may not meet your expectations.
