2004 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common 2004 Ford Expedition problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2004 Ford Expedition, several common problems have been reported:
- Electrical Problems: A few complaints have been raised regarding electrical issues, including reports of electrical fires with wires melting and smoke filling the cabin. Although not widespread, it is advisable to inspect the wire harnesses when considering a used 2004 Expedition.
- Powertrain and Engine Concerns: While powertrain and engine issues have been relatively rare for the 2004 Expedition, some drivers have reported sudden power loss while driving at highway speeds, which could indicate potential early failure. Vigilance is recommended to address any signs of power loss promptly.
- Recalls: The 2004 Ford Expedition has had only 4 recalls, all related to missing reflectors. While this is a relatively low number of recalls, it is essential to ensure that any outstanding recalls have been addressed for safety reasons.
- Paint Problems: Paint issues have been a significant complaint, especially with reports of peeling, chipping, and bubbling paint, particularly prevalent in the 2005 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and detailed work to maintain the vehicle's appearance.
- Accessory Malfunctions: Some models, including the 2004 Expedition, have been associated with interior accessory problems such as air conditioning malfunctions, dashboard rattling, and seat belt issues. These issues can be frustrating for drivers and may require repairs that add to the overall cost of ownership.
- Engine Troubles: The 2004 Ford Expedition has been noted for engine problems, including engine shutdown on the open road, rough engine performance, difficulties changing spark plugs, and ignition coil failures. These engine-related issues can be dangerous, expensive to fix, and disruptive to the driving experience.
By addressing these common problems proactively and ensuring proper maintenance and inspections, owners of the 2004 Ford Expedition can mitigate potential issues and enjoy a more reliable and safe driving experience.

Needed to move it out of the way all was good started it and moved it across the yard and backed it in no problem. Had K&O auto look at it and was told it needs a transmission. I see allot of complaints about this issue from others without Ford being held responsible to correct the problem. Nice vehical said I can't afford to get it fixed, now driving a 500.00 used vehicle to get around, it is an eye sore but gets me around ok. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-12-18
- VIN: 1FMRU17W44L
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING (AT ANY SPEED) AND OFTEN WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE MAY ALSO NOT START AT ALL THEN START WITHOUT EXPLANATION. THE MOST COMMON RECOMMENDATION IS TO REPLACE THE FUEL RELAY. TO DO SO, YOU MUST REPLACE THE SMART JUNCTION BOX/FUEL RELAY PANEL. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH NUMEROUS MENTIONS AND IS OFTEN DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE AND COMMONLY BECOMES A PROCESS OF ELIMINATION. THE BIGGEST CONCERN IS THE SAFETY ISSUE AND ODDS OF ACCIDENT OR FATALITY. DIAGNOSES TYPICALLY REQUIRES COMPLETE FAILURE BECAUSE THE SYMPTOMS CAN RARELY BE DUPLICATED. THIS HAS HAPPENED FREQUENTLY WITH COMPLETE FAILURE HAPPENING. HARDWIRING THE FUEL PUMP RULES THAT OUT. FUEL RELAY IS FOUND TO BE HOT TO THE TOUCH.

The car has a really nice, smooth ride and some great features.
-
This vehicle is truly one of the best I have ever owned. When I first drove my sister's older model, I wasn't sure if it was the right fit for me. However, after purchasing this one, I am so glad I did! It is incredibly comfortable and the ride is so quiet. It really is one of the best all-around vehicles out there. Not only is it perfect for family time due to its spaciousness and luxury, but it is also stylish for when a couple wants to have their own time.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I completely understand where you're coming from - I used to be a Dodge person myself! However, I recently needed a more family-sized SUV and the Durango just wasn't cutting it. That's when I found this amazing SUV that I absolutely love! It's so roomy, stylish, and powerful. And the best part? It's incredibly safe! I know this for a fact because my sister had one and unfortunately got into an accident where the car rolled down a 300ft cliff. But thanks to the safety features, my family was brought back to me after the wreck. That experience really sold me on this SUV. I've only had it for a week, but I already love it so much. I had it thoroughly checked and there's nothing mechanically wrong with it, except for the rear passenger seat belt which doesn't work. But the place I bought it from said they would replace it for free! Thanks for listening to me gush about my new SUV - have a great day!

I really enjoyed my '99 XLT 4.6l, but it was time to upgrade since it had 284000 km on it. The 5.4 gives me better MPG, and the Eddie Bauer has similar performance (although it must be heavier with all the extra features like heated/cooled seats, 6 CD, auto A/C, great sound, 3rd row in floor to leave room for the dog, back up alarm and all). I'm especially happy that I can see better at night now, which is a great improvement. The only downside is that I can hear a whining noise when I apply power, which is a bit annoying. I was hoping for wood trim on the dash at that price point, but overall it's a delight to drive on the road. The front suspension feels a bit looser compared to my solid axle on the '99, and there's quite a bit of brake dust on the wheels, but they clean up easily and look great.
-
From the quality of the interior to the torque monster powertrain, this ride is one of the best in its class!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this car. When I first got it, it was great! Of course, being an 8-cylinder car, it does use quite a bit of gas. However, about a year ago, my worst nightmare came true - the air suspension light turned on. I ended up spending a lot of money to replace it twice, but it still has some problems. I've been trying to fix it so I can sell it, but unfortunately, I haven't had much luck. In my opinion, it might be best to consider getting rid of it. Overall, it hasn't been my best deal, but I hope this information helps you out!
Lazaro Friesen 2024-06-02
The room in the vehicle is great for a family of 4 or 5, with plenty of luggage space for long family trips. The Eddie Bauer's design looks great with the gold underpackage and pretty much any body color. However, the brake dust is a bit of a concern. It would be great if quality brake pads were used. Additionally, the middle seat in the second row should recline along with the outside passenger seats. The leather on the third-row seating has come unattached and I'm not sure how to have it fixed. It looks quite unsightly. The gas mileage is not great, but it's expected from such a large vehicle. Lastly, the A/C fan inside the dash makes a light squealing sound periodically, which is a bit annoying. I'm not sure if Ford will be able to hear it and fix it, though.
Marcellus Hayes 2024-05-26
I really liked this SUV, but unfortunately, it only got 12 MPG, regardless of whether I was driving on the highway or in-town. I owned a 2001 Expedition XLT with the 4.6L engine, which performed much better in terms of fuel efficiency. I was hoping the 03 model would be similar, but it fell short. Although the estimated MPG on the sticker was not accurate, I was able to sell the SUV without losing much money. I am now eagerly waiting for my Toyota Sienna, which I'm sure will be a great alternative. If you're in the market for a new car, you might want to consider other options besides the Ford Expedition.
Dax McLaughlin 2024-04-10
The Expedition is a highly sought-after SUV. It would be great if Ford could consider factors such as economy, torque, etc. (engineering) when designing the interiors. It would also be nice if captain's chairs were made available and a 6 CD changer was standard. Additionally, the headrests need more attention as they are too high for small 5'2
Cyrus Jacobs 2024-04-09
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to bring to your attention a few things that I've noticed with my Expedition. I've had some trouble with the brake dirt on the front wheels, and the sunroof has been making quite a bit of noise, even after some unsuccessful repairs. Additionally, I've found that the instrument panel is a bit difficult to read, and the warning panel is in a bit of a tricky spot. This is actually my third Expedition, and unfortunately, I don't think it's living up to the standards of my previous ones from 1997 and 2000. I've also noticed that it doesn't tow quite as well as the others. Thanks for taking the time to listen to my concerns!
