Ford Expedition 2000 problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common Ford Expedition 2000 problems

The Ford Expedition 2000 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily involving the engine, transmission, and electrical systems.

  • Transmission Failure: The 2004 Ford Expedition tends to have transmission failure issues at an average mileage of 76,000 miles, with an average repair cost of $2700.
  • Bubbling Paint: The 2005 Ford Expedition has been reported to have bubbling paint issues at an average mileage of 54,000 miles, with an average repair cost of $4200.
  • Electrical System Issues: A common problem reported by owners is a loud humming noise that makes it difficult to hear other passengers or even listen to the radio. This issue has been reported to worsen over time, making the car almost too annoying to use.
  • Alternator and Battery Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the alternator and battery, including a burning smell, egg smell, and sizzling battery. These issues may be related to a security system draining the battery or a faulty alternator.
  • Drive Shaft and Rear Leaf Spring Support: Some 2000 Ford Expeditions have experienced problems with the drive shaft and rear leaf spring support, which can cause the steering to become tight and result in banging noises.

These issues are not necessarily exclusive to the 2000 model year, as many of the problems reported are common across multiple generations of the Ford Expedition. It is essential to be aware of these potential issues when purchasing a used Ford Expedition, especially if it falls within the affected model years.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-12-24
  • VIN: 1FMPU18L0YL
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: THROTTLE FEELS LIKE ITS STICKING. THE BREAKS FEEL LIKE THEY GET HARDER THE LONGER YOU DRIVE OR USE THEM. ITS BEEN EXTREMELY COLD THE LAST FEW WEEKS (AIR TEMP OF -28F LOWS TO -3F FOR HIGHS). YOU LET OFF THE BREAK FROM A STOP SIGN OR STOP LIGHT AND IT WILL SUDDENLY ACCERLERATE BY ITSELF. SEEMS TO HAPPEN ANYTIME AFTER 40MPH, EVEN IF YOU SLOW BACK DOWN TO 10-15MPH IT WILL ACCELERATE BACK UP ON ITS OWN, UP TO AS FAST AS 65MPH!) I NEED TO DOWNSHIFT AND RIDE BRAKES (WHICH ARE HARD AS A ROCK!!!) TO KEEP IT FROM EXCELLING THOUGH TOWN AND TO TRY TO KEEP THE RPMS AT BAY. WHEN COMING TO A STOP AND TURNING ITS HARD TO STEER AND IT MAKES JUMPY/JERKY MOVEMENTS FORWARD WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED. WHEN VEHICLE COMES TO A STOP THE RPMS SKYROCKET UNTIL YOU SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE. IF YOU HAVN'T GIVEN IT ENOUGH TIME BEFORE YOU START IT AGAIN, THE ENGINE AND RPMS SOAR UP AGAIN. THINGS WE'VE TRIED WITH NO LUCK ARE, DISENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL, REPLACING THE SPRING UNDER HOOD WHERE THE THROTTLE CABLE IS. THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS STRETCHED AND NOT DEPRESSING FULLY TO ALOW DECELERATION. AFTER THAT WE REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY ITSELF. AGAIN, NO LUCK ON TEST DRIVE. YOU CAN HEAR A CLICK/PING IN THE PEDAL AND SEE IT COME UP ONCE TRUCK IS IN PARK, GIVE IT TIME. PEDAL SEEMS TO BE PARTIALLY DEPRESSED AND THERE IS PLAY. HAVE TRIED TO STICK FOOT UNDER THE PEDAL TO TRY AND GET IT TO DISENGE. WORKED THE FIRST FEW TIMES THAT'S ALSO WHY THOUGHT IT WAS THE SPRING. NO LONGER WORKS TO DO THAT. CAN SEEM TO HEAR A DIFFERENCE EITHER IN MOTOR OR TRANY, ACTING AS IF IT'S WORKING HARDER WHEN IT SEEMS TO TAKE CONTROL OF ITSELF. STARTED HAPPENING 12-24-17. BEEN TO THE SHOP MANY TIMES WITH NO ANSWERS AS TO WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. IT'S VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS! AFTER READING ABOUT ALL THE OTHERS THIS IS HAPPENED TO ITS HARD TO IMAGINE THAT THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL OR AT THE VERY LEAST AN ANSWER YET!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-05-15
  • VIN: 1FMFU18L8YL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING THIS EXPEDITION I BEGAN NOTICING STRANGE INTERMITTANT ELECTRICAL BEHAVIOR LIKE THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS NOT WORKING, RADIO TURNING OFF, WINDSHIELD WASH LIGHT BLINKING, AND 4X4 LIGHT BLINKING. SEVERAL TIMES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT I'D NOTICE THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD COME ON ON THEIR OWN. ALSO THE AIR RIDE WOULD TURN ON AND OFF WHILE THE CAR WAS OFF, AND THE HEATER FAN WOULD ALSO COME ON. THIS WOULD KILL THE BATTERY. SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING THE 4X4 WOULD TURN ON IN THE LOW GEAR MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE STARTER WOULD TURN ON WHILE THE CAR WAS ALREADY RUNNING. I REPLACED THE GEM MODULE AND HAD THE WINDSHIELD RESEALED SEVERAL TIMES, BUT AFTER JUST A FEW MONTHS THE PROBLEMS WOULD RECUR. THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN WAS WHEN THE STARTER KICKED ON WHILE RUNNING AND IT TOOK A MINUTE TO GET THE CAR SAFELY STOPPED. I COULD SMELL SMOKE FROM THE BURNED UP STARTER MOTOR. THE EXPEDITION HAS SAT FOR 1.5 YEARS AS I AM UNABLE TO SELL IT AND AM UNWILLING TO PUT ANY ADDITIONAL MONEY TO FIX THIS LEMON.

Negative Ford Expedition 2000 car reviews

I purchased an Expedition because of its great looks, size, and expected reliability. I bought it with 55k miles in 2003 and have loved it ever since, especially the tough truck looks with the sport package. The front seats offer a great view and there is plenty of room inside, although there is little to no room in the back when the 3rd seat is used. The interior comforts and handling are also great. The ride can be a little rough, but overall it's a fantastic vehicle. Unfortunately, my positive experience was marred when the head gasket blew at 69k and Ford refused to help. Despite having to spend $2k to fix it, I am still driving my Expedition. While I can't justify buying another one due to my misfortune and Ford's lack of customer service, I still appreciate the qualities that make this vehicle great.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 1999 car. At first, I was really impressed with its powerful 5.4L engine, sleek looks, and comfortable ride. I always made sure to take it to the dealer for maintenance, thinking that any issues would be resolved early on. Unfortunately, I ran into some trouble with a rough idle and after three trips to the dealer, I was surprised to find out that it had a blown head gasket - and just after the warranty had expired! The repair cost me $1800.00, but luckily the dealership paid half. I also had to pay $500.00 for the other trips. It's frustrating to have these issues with a $38,000 vehicle, but I'm still hopeful. I'm considering a Toyota Sequoa for my next car. I really wanted to buy American, but I just can't afford to. Thanks for listening!

This SUV is a great choice for families who need to tow a boat and navigate various weather conditions. While it may be a bit tall for young children in car seats, teenagers should have no trouble getting in and out. It handles well in all types of weather and has no trouble accelerating or passing on the highway. The AWD system may impact fuel efficiency, but the 4X4 capability is a great feature for off-road driving. However, it's important to note that the running boards and lower ground clearance may not be suitable for serious off-roading. When exiting the SUV, it's recommended to use the running boards to avoid getting mud or dirt on your pant legs.

I purchased my Expedition 4wd brand new in November 2000. Since then, it has had a few issues, including a new transmission, rear wiper motor, new IAC valve, new fuel pump, two new seats, new engine oil pressure sender unit, suspension problems, and replaced transmission shift cable. Additionally, two of the 'replacement tires' were replaced during a tire recall. While I have had some difficulties, I believe that Ford could improve their customer service. If you are considering purchasing a Ford and have concerns about potential issues, it may be worth exploring other options. Thank you for considering my experience.

Constantly having to repair can be frustrating. It seems like Ford didn't consider ease of access when designing this vehicle, making it difficult to fix without mechanical skills. However, with some patience and effort, it is possible to make the necessary repairs.

Hi there! It's great to hear that you purchased your Expy used with 80K miles to use as a tow vehicle for your boat and that it has been very reliable for you. With the 5.4L V8 running strong and the 3.55 diff, it's no wonder you get a respectable 19-20 mpg on the road and 15mpg when pulling the boat. I'm glad to hear that you find yourself driving it more because it's comfortable and allows you to see the road much better than from behind the wheel of your Camry. The placement of controls are well thought out and easy to reach, and the cloth seats are comfortable too. It's great that you also love the 3rd row seat and rear a/c. Lastly, the lighted running boards are a nice touch! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

The Expedition has everything you could want. It's luxurious, spacious, has great towing capacity, safety features, storage room, and much more!

  3. Brain Abernathy 2024-10-06

Great auto! It's truly a pleasure to drive, whether in town or on the highway. If I were in the market for a new SUV, this would absolutely be the one for me.

  4. Leonardo Orn 2024-10-05

The Ford Expedition is a well-built SUV with a great interior layout. The rear climate control features are fantastic, and the 5.4L V8 engine is highly reliable.

  5. Benedict Pacocha 2024-09-12

On flat terrain, I average 20 m.p.g., but in the hills with a loaded vehicle, the 4.6 liter engine has to work harder. Despite this, after 4 years, the truck is still in excellent shape and has only needed a repair for a loose wire on the back up system. The 5-star safety rating was a major factor in my decision to purchase. I do wish that Ford offered an 8-way seat like the one in the Honda Pilot.
