2020 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

- Summary: The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
- VIN: 1FMJU1JTXLE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I read that there is a recall on 2021/2022 Fords with Eco Boost but not the 2020. I have had my vehicle into the dealership multiple times due to misfires and loss of all power which has almost caused multiple accidents on the interstate. I accelerate to get into the left lane and lose all power and do not get power back until my vehicle decelerates down to around 40 mph/or a lower gear, causing semi’s and other vehicles to have to slam on their brakes so that they do no run into the back of me. It idles very roughly and overall has been the worst vehicle mechanically that I have ever owned. The dealerships always say they cannot find anything wrong with it or cannot reproduce it but it happens on a daily basis and keeps getting worse. I have had the transmission updated, changed the cool packs, and changed the plugs which has not helped at all. I want to know why the 2020 Expedition is not included in this recall? This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased and I would expect it to run smoothly with no issues and I am very disappointed. Not only disappointed in the vehicle, but in Ford itself for not acknowledging this issue. I have read many complaints from other customers experiencing the same issues and unable to find a fix for it. I would like some answers and for Ford to make things right with my Expedition. I am not able to trade it in or sell it due to having all the issues that it has and frankly I’m not sure I trust Ford anymore or if I’ll ever buy a Ford product again and we have been faithful Ford owners for years. Thank you for your time and I’ll be looking forward to hearing back from you soon regarding this issue. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
- VIN: 1FMJU1PT3LE
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: My park aid sensor fault comes on without cause and a picture of a car blocks the view to the screen that displays directions from google maps. It comes on suddenly and sporadically and has almost caused an accident several times as I don't know where I am going when this happens. I took my car to the dealership to get this fixed. The dealership charged me $213.79 for the diagnosis and stated that this happens to alert me to a problem related to when a vehicle is approaching on the left or right and the audio component does not work. In other words, when a vehicle is approaching, the lights on the mirrors flash on but the noise does not present. They then told me that to stop the dangerous flashing of the car blocking my view of the map, that I would be charged almost $800 to repair. I told them I couldn't afford it and asked if they could just stop the random car display from happening and covering my map. To me, this is much more dangerous than the main quality defect preventing the sounds. I was told that they were not allowed to disable this malfunction and that it was not considered a quality defect or recall issue. I am currently driving in an unsafe vehicle due to a design flaw in a vehicle that is not yet 4 years old that I can't afford to fix myself. The fields below don't allow me to enter information. I have not been in an accident yet due to this. It happens at various speeds. My vehicle has about 52000 miles on it.

The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred at various speeds while shifting gear. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the vehicle was safe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 59,158.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT2LE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: This has happened many times throughout my ownership of the vehicle. At times, when trying to accelerate into traffic, changing lanes, etc. The vehicle make a loud clunking noise when it tries to downshift. The transmission acts as if it has no idea what gear to go into. A "system fault" with a wrench appears on the center display along with an audible alarm. The vehicle either loses power altogether or it has downshifted into an extremely low gear which brings the rpms near redline. On several occasions this has put my family in dangerous situations. We came close to getting in a collision more than once. It has frightened my daughter who has special needs. Upon bringing it to ford while the warranty was still in place, they claim they could not replicate the problem. On the way back home from the dealer, it happened again. We made ANOTHER appointment for service, they reflashed the transmission strategy and said it's fixed. It was ok for maybe a few weeks, but the problem continues. Now the warranty is up, and we are still stuck with the same issue which is becoming more and more frequent. Ford will not repair it without charging, yet this issue existed while the warranty was still in place. It's a known defect that presented itself while the warranty was still in place. It was never repaired, Ford only applied a band-aid to get past the powertrain warranty.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 1FMJU1MT6LE
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Driving down a highway the right side front trim that extends from the top of the windshield to the front of the luggage rack ripped off and it took a piece of the luggage rack off with it. It caused the vehicle behind me to swerve to avoid hitting it and nearly caused an accident. My local Ford Dealership told me that there is an active recall # 24S02 currently exists for similar reasons but does not currently cover my 2020 vehicle.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT9LE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Driving at non-highway speeds on roads with hills, the vehicle aggressively downshifts occasionally. It isn't all the time, and it is difficult to duplicate, but it feels rough. I believe a TSB has been issued for this issue. It is well documented and should be recalled, as the known issue was repaired in the 2024 model.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: 1FMJU1HT0LE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Transmission started shifting hard (into and out of park to drive) and (between 3-4 and 7-8 gears). I brought my concerns to the dealership at the end of 2023 and asked if it could be reprogrammed. The advisor stated that the transmission was going bad and to just keep driving it until it failed because they are seeing a lot of failures. In July 2024 we pulled onto the highway when we attempted accelerate the engine revved to redline and the vehicle stopped accelerating. When the gas pedal was lifted the transmission started grinding back into gear. We had to slowly push the gas pedal down to get it home at 30mph. Every time it downshifted it would stop accelerating. Ford did a complete transmission replacement. I also have a 2019 F150 [XXX] ) with 79000 miles on it and it is now showing the same signs of failure with shifting. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
- VIN: 1FMJK2AT8LE

- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at various speeds and attempting to steer the vehicle, the steering wheel would oversteer the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering was overcompensating while steering the vehicle. The mechanic stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24E055000 (Steering). The mechanic contacted the dealer and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: 1FMJU1HTXLE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: From early on, the vehicle had a hard shift from 7 to 8. This was discussed with the dealership and they claimed they couldn’t recreate it. This has been the life of the vehicle. About 6 months ago it began to hard shift in other gears. 3 to 4 being the most common. Then 2 months ago it would slow down, you could hear grinding, then jerk violently forward (finally getting into gear). When we called the dealership to ask they said they would have to look at it. But it was not consistent enough. The vehicle eventually began to slip from gear and jerk forward into gear, everyday. Almost causing me to be rear ended multiple times. Loosing speed at anytime and causing random speeds with the inability to regain speed until the car “found” a gear. I would be driving 60 mph and it would find a lower gear and jerk into gear. It needs a whole new transmission. FORD is aware of this issue with the 10R80 transmission. 3.5 eco boost. My car is un driveable now. It fails to find a gear. A quick Google search will showcase exact stories just like mine with people saying the exact same thing. Harsh shifting. Jerking. Grinding. Loosing speed while driving. FORD didn’t have a fix for anyone. And now new transmissions are the only fix. Please inspect.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
- VIN: 1FMJU1JT3LE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated the windshield wipers were intermittently inoperable. Additionally, the contact stated that while attempting to drive from a complete stop at night, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to turn off and was drivable after 15 minutes. The vehicle was driven to a parking spot. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the windshield washer line located on the front passenger's side and on the rear windshield had exploded due to washer fluid accumulation. The dealer informed the contact that the failure caused the windshield washer fluid and freon to leak into the dashboard module and onto the front passenger's side floorboard. The dealer repaired the R and R BCM, reprogrammed the RCM communication circuit and the BCM, and installed the Alarm-KE and the R and R auxiliary evaporator cord. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 68,305.

- Summary: The 2020 Ford expedition has transmission issues. It will slip gears in the middle of driving, it will stall when trying to change gears from park to reverse to drive. When accelerating the vehicle will rev up in RPMs and drastically drop speed I’ve had to almost come to a complete stop on the interstate driving 70+ miles an hour. There were no lights or warnings that appeared on the dash. We took it to a mechanic to have it inspected and we were told that we need to replace the entire transmission. We contacted the Ford dealer in which we purchased it from and they are not willing to address the issue. I am a mother of four children, and I’m regularly driving in the vehicle to take them to and from school and various activities. I am very concerned about the safety of myself as well as my children. Should we be driving and the transmission completely shut down. Since having the vehicle looked at by a mechanic, the warning signs have now turned on and appear every time I start the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT3LE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: On multiple occasions, our car has lurched out of gear going at fast speeds on the highway. It slips out of gear and the car shakes and then it lunges back into gear. On a few occasions, the gas pedal was also inoperable while the car was "finding the right gear". This has been extremely scary for my family when this has happened. The first time we took it to the dealership and they reprogrammed the transmission. Then, it happened again about 6 weeks after the fix, and this time the transmission valve had to be replaced.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22

The driver's door was open, back drivers side door open, and tailgate open. The front passenger's seat belt pretensioner deployed and it sounded as though something hit the vehicle. I walked around the car to inspect for damage and even looked on top of the vehicle for damage. No damage occurred as nothing hit the vehicle. My wife got into the car in the front passenger seat and could not move the seat belt. I walked around and verified that it could not be moved as it was in the rest position with the pre-tensioner deployed. Issue: Non-event with front passenger seat belt pre-tensioner deployment Available to be inspected: Yes Safety at risk: My wife just had a c-section and if deployed with her in it, would have been much worse. Additionally, cannot use the seat now that seat belt is inoperable. Issue been reproduced: No. The pre-tensioner goes off with explosive charge making reproduction impossible. Warning lamps present: No.

- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 Expedition vehicles. The seat belt tension sensor may incorrectly classify a child occupant as an adult.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, the incorrect classification would enable the passenger air bag to deploy instead of disabling it, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat belt buckle, free of charge. The recall began October 16, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S54.

Due to incorrect coding of interfacing modules, the Pre-Collision Assist feature is not enabled, and the driver cannot access the menu functions necessary to enable the Pre-Collision Assist feature.
- Consequence: If the driver is unaware that the Pre-Collision Assist feature is not enabled, they may rely on a system that is not functional, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram software for the Body Control Module, Antilock Braking System, Instrument Panel Cluster and Headlamp Control Modules, and reset the Tire Pressure Monitor System, free of charge. - Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seatbelt buckle, free of charge. The recall began May 11, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S17.

- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 Ranger and F-150 vehicles equipped with 10-speed automatic transmissions and certain 2020 Expedition vehicles equipped with a "police" package. The transmission shift cable lock clip may not be fully seated, allowing the transmission to actually be in a different gear than the gear shift position selected by the driver.
- Consequence: If the transmission selection does not match the indicated gear selection, and the parking brake is not applied, unintended vehicle movement can occur, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the shift cable locking clip installation, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S18.

Also included are certain 2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with rear outboard seats and manual seat back recliner mechanisms. The recliner mechanisms may be missing the third pawl required for seat back strength, resulting in a loose seat back. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 202, "Head Restraints" and 207, "Seating Systems."
- Consequence: A seat back with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the seat structure and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 21, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C07.

I'm glad to hear that you're interested in the Range Rover diesel! It's definitely worth waiting for, especially since the current F 150 already gets an impressive 30 mpg. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It's great to hear that you and your family have been able to enjoy some long road trips in your 2019 Expedition Limited. Although you did experience a bit of a hiccup with the cam phasers, it's wonderful to know that the dealership was able to fix the issue and you haven't had any further problems since. Thanks again for sharing your story with us!

This is my 5th Expedition, and I must say that I have always been impressed with how well-appointed and well-built these SUVs are. I have never had any problems with them, and they are always comfortable to drive. Even with the extra high gas prices lately, my 2020 model still manages to average around 23-24 MPG of gasoline at 80 MPH, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it get 28 MPG at 70 MPH and 20-21 around town. It also pulls my 35' camping trailer with ease, which is a huge plus!

We purchased our Expedition in 2020, which turned out to be perfect timing. During the first four months of driving, we experienced some issues with the suspension and the right side power running board. Although the suspension on the Platinum version is supposed to adjust to road conditions automatically, it was extremely bouncy. Additionally, the right running board would not retract until the car was put in gear. Despite these issues, we continued to use the car for four months, and suddenly, the car righted itself, and we haven't had any problems since. We believe it just needed a break-in period. The car has plenty of room for eight people, and it has a lot of power, yet we're still getting an average of 21 mpg on Normal mode, even with plenty of city driving. This is our primary car, and we're very happy with it. We were considering waiting for the new 2021 Cadillac Escalade, but we're glad we didn't. We plan to keep this car until at least 100K miles.

Great turning radius. You'll enjoy a very smooth ride.

On 4th October 2019, we purchased a brand new 2019 Ford Expedition for almost $80,000. However, after leaving the dealership, we discovered that the rear AC was not working. I immediately contacted Brett, our sales agent, who drove the car from Surprise Ford to Peoria Ford. I then drove it to Goodyear AZ, and one of your service representatives picked it up and drove it back to your facility where it has been since. Currently, the car has less than 100 miles on it, and Peoria has put more miles on it than we have. Brett informed me that they would pick up the car on Monday, 7th October 2019, and get it fixed. However, even after their technician Cliff looked at it and made the recommended repairs, the unit was still not functioning. At this point, we asked for another car, but we were told that there were no other cars available. Bill then said he would work on getting us an identical or better car from another dealer and trade it. On Friday, I talked to Cliff, who informed me that they don't know what's wrong with it and are waiting to hear back from Ford. On 8th October 2019, I called our salesman Brett, who informed me that he has resigned his position at the dealership and he could not talk to me due to Peoria Ford pursuing him legally. However, we never heard back from Bill by Friday, 11th October 2019, end of day, and that is when I emailed the owner Pat Hickey. In my opinion, if I spend nearly $80,000 on a car and have purchased 5 other expensive vehicles from Peoria in the previous years, we should have been given our money back or provided with another car identical or within the week. When buying a luxury SUV and not being able to drive it, it is very frustrating, as we traded in a fully functional, very nice, fully loaded Yukon Denali. Our kids had fall break last week, and they were not able to travel to our home in the White Mountains due to space constraints of the much smaller Ford F-150.We were given a loaner F-150 crew cab, which unfortunately does not have the same space or luxury as the car we purchased. On 10-14-19, I had a conference call with the Owner Pat Hickey and Fleet Director Bill, during which I was told to wait 48 hours. However, I never heard back from them, so I sent another email. Pat informed me that he was boarding a flight and that Bill would take care of it. On 10-16-19, I made a formal complaint to Ford and was given Case # 24576080. Katherine at 1-866-631-3788 ext 7781410-18-19 assisted me, but unfortunately, the repair they performed did not fix the car. The Service Advisor Cliff has been texting me and told me that they have another call into Ford, but they don't know what the problem is. As of 10-21-19 @ 1050 hours, I have still not been contacted by the dealership nor Ford to resolve this issue, and we still do not have the SUV we paid for on 10-4-19. The car's value is nowhere near what we paid for it, as we looked at taking it to another Ford/Lincoln dealer to trade it in on another SUV, and they offered us 61K on a 78,000 dollar car. If they were to give us our money back, we would be losing the tax value we saved on trading in the Yukon Denali that we were given toward this car. Update 10-26-19: The car is still at the dealership broken.

The ride quality of this car is really nice. However, there are a few issues that I have encountered. Firstly, the headrests are positioned too far forward, which can cause neck and back pain even when adjusted. Secondly, the automatic cruise control is not as responsive as I would like, and can be a bit unnerving in traffic. Thirdly, the Bluetooth audio quality is not great, and people have trouble hearing me. Finally, the rear cargo room is not as spacious as I would like, especially with the third seat up. I am comparing this to my old Escalade, which had a lot more room with the third seat up.

I purchased this car new from the dealership in 2019 and it currently has 50k miles. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. Within the first 20k miles, I had to replace the shocks twice due to leaking. At 25k miles, the navigation system/screen needed to be replaced (out of warranty $1000). At 36k miles, the Cam Phasers had to be replaced, and then at 54k miles, the cam phasers failed again and had to be replaced for a 2nd time. After I picked up the car, on the way home, the low oil pressure light came on. The dealership towed it back to the shop and this time it was the oil pump that had failed. At this point, Ford extended our powertrain warranty for another 3 yr/36k miles. At 57k miles, the car left my family and me stranded in the middle of the night on the side of a highway coming back from a high school sports game at 11:45 pm for 2 hours until AAA showed up. This time the car would not accelerate all of a sudden past 40 MPH! Had it towed to the dealership the next morning and said 2-3 cylinders were misfiring and need to be replaced. While I have had some issues with this car, I believe that Ford is working to address them and I hope that future models will be more reliable.

I had a bad experience with my Ford and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The interior plastic is of poor quality and the air vents in the second row have broken twice in less than two years. Unfortunately, the plastic is cheap and brittle, making it difficult to direct the air in the ceiling vents. The sunroof also failed to open after only a few uses, and the small carpeted piece that covers the folded down third row seat broke as well. Although there is a known cam phaser rattle problem in this engine that has been produced since 2017, Ford did not send out a recall to fix the issue. Despite these problems, I still hope to find a better solution in the future.Get on the ball and come up with a software solution! (It's apparently already available for the F150, just not the Expedition??)
