2011 Ford Expedition problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

This is a safety problem as it is stuck in fourth gear and completely unsafe to drive. This is a ford factory problem and needs to be addressed before it gets someone gravely injured of killed I talked with ford and they sY since there is no recall there is nothing they can do I've beennout a vehicle for 2 weeks already and now they say they have no clue when they can find the part. So I'm just out a vehicle that I payed thousands of dollars for. This is Unacceptable as I need the vehicle to get to work I don't know if this will help but I have to try something. There should be a recall on the expeditions as well

Somewhere around 50k to 60k miles, I complained to the dealership about a ticking noise from the engine and was told multiple times it was "normal with this engine". Well this engine blew while I was on my way to take the kids to school. I was on the interstate/bypass and was by some miracle able to get the 7-11. I was driving and all of a sudden, it sounded like there was squirrel under the hood. I had to have it towed to the dealership because it was not driveable and they told me the engine was no longer good and was blown. They said it would cost me $10k and I would be better off buying a new vehicle. There was no engine light or anything that came on until it blew. The only "warning" I had was the slight ticking noise that came from the engine, but when mentioned to the dealership, I was told that it was normal with this engine.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-14
  • VIN: 1FMJU1H55BE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 78MPH, THE REAR TIRES ON OUR 2011 EXPEDITION SUDDENLY LOCKED UP, SKIDDING THE TIRES AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO FISHTAIL SHE HAD NO CONTROL OF STEERING OR ACCELERATION. WHEN THE VEHICLE REACHED APPROXIMATELY 35MPH THE TIRES RELEASED AND SHE WAS ABLE TO STEER INTO THE MEDIAN. AT THIS POINT, SHE COULD NOT MOVE THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS A PICTURE OF A WRENCH ON THE DASHBOARD. WHEN SHE WAS COMPLETELY STOPPED, SHE PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND SAT FOR A FEW MINUTES. SHE THEN ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE, BUT SHE HAD NO POWER. THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING, BUT SHE WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. SHE HAD TO CALL FOR A TOW TRUCK. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME, I GOT IN IT AND STARTED IT, THEN NOTICED THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ON. I TURNED THAT LIGHT OFF ON THE DASHBOARD, AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. I DROVE IT TO A FORD DEALER, AND ALL THE MECHANIC COULD FIND WAS THAT THE REAR STRUTS WERE WORN OUT. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT OUR VEHICLE DID NOT THROW ANY HARD CODE, ONLY A SOFT CODE. HE SAID WE ARE BASICALLY DRIVING COMPUTERS NOW WITH ALL THE TECHNOLOGY. FORD MOTOR COMPANY INFORMED ME THAT THERE IS NO RECALL ON OUR VEHICLE, ONLY THE 2012 MODEL THAT HAS THE SAME ISSUE. AFTER TALKING WITH TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE AT FORD MOTOR COMPANY, I WAS TOLD SORRY, IT IS NOT UNDER RECALL AND THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO. UPON INVESTIGATING FURTHER, WE FOUND OUT MY WIFE'S EXPEDITION WAS MANUFACTURED AT THE SAME PLANT IN KENTUCKY, MADE IN THE SAME YEAR AS THE RECALLED VEHICLES BUT 4 MONTHS EARLIER, AND HAS THE SAME TRANSMISSION (6R80) AS THE RECALLED 2012 EXPEDITIONS THAT STARTED PRODUCTION IN AUGUST OF 2011. HOPE NHTSB CAN INVESTIGATE BECAUSE WE CAN'T GET ANYWHERE WITH FORD.

Negative 2011 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Ward Smitham 2024-11-17

This is my wife's dream car. After driving it for 2 weeks and taking a 3-hour road trip, I have to say that it is quite an expensive vehicle. As someone who has been a Ford enthusiast for years, I was disappointed with the 5.4 V8 engine's performance, even with 6 spd downshifts. While I loved my 97F150, this truck did not meet my expectations. It handles like a brick and wallows in the wind. Additionally, the recommended 7500 miles between oil changes may lead to increased engine wear, which is not covered by the warranty. This could result in excessive oil leakage and low compression before 100k miles. Lastly, the front headrest is uncomfortable and nonadjustable. However, I understand that everyone has different preferences and experiences. Thank you for letting me share mine.

  2. Logan Lind 2024-11-14

I purchased this vehicle in November 2009, and unfortunately experienced some issues with the electronics that required a two-week repair. In January 2010, the heated seats stopped working, and in April, the sunroof would not open. While these issues have been disappointing, I remain confident in the overall reliability of this vehicle.

  3. Edd Weimann 2024-09-11

I experienced a computer malfunction in my brand new vehicle, which disabled the ABS and directional signals, and detected a system fault in the navigation. The vehicle is currently being serviced by the dealer and is expected to be ready by Thursday, after a week in service. As a loyal Ford customer, this has been a disappointing experience for me.

  4. Arvel Kuhn 2024-08-01

I bought my Expedition with high hopes, big engine, nice looks, and some high-end equipment, and for $56,000 I couldn't beat it. After dealing with the tedious process of negotiating, I left the lot with my new car. Immediately, I noticed that the steering felt quite numb. I mean, it's a truck, so I didn't expect it to be sporty, but I was hoping for some feel. My other major dislike about this car is that the interior quality isn't the greatest. There are uneven gaps, poor materials, and hard surfaces, which is something I wasn't expecting for almost 60k. Overall, I've put almost 90,000 miles on my Expedition, and the resale value is looking good. It still feels put together. If you're in the market for a full-size SUV, I would recommend taking a look at it. However, I would much more recommend the Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon, or the Chevy Tahoe or Suburban.

  5. Graham Witting 2024-04-22

This is the third expedition that I have owned. Although I have been experiencing some issues with my vehicle, I have found that Ford's customer service has remained consistent since 2003. Despite having to visit 3 dealerships and 6 shops, the staff at Ford have been friendly and helpful throughout the process. While there is still a vibration in the front end after 800 miles, the team at Ford has been working hard to address the issue and have even replaced a faulty tire. I appreciate their efforts and am confident that they will continue to work with me until the issue is resolved. Thank you, Ford, for your dedication to customer satisfaction!

Positive 2011 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Leone Bayer 2025-01-08

I purchased the 2010 EB/EL model for the extra space and options. It made the 3200 mile trip with golf clubs, tons of people and luggage a piece of cake! The ride was exceptional and the Navigation system is great. I am very pleased after three months of ownership and I hope it lasts.

  2. Marc Quigley 2024-10-25

Your vehicle rides really well and has lots of room for passengers and cargo. It's a great choice for long trips. The fuel mileage is so-so, but considering what it is, it's not bad.

  3. Laurel Ebert 2024-09-29

This SUV is truly impressive! Ford has outdone themselves with this model. I purchased it for my wife, who was in need of a new vehicle, and she couldn't be happier. She previously drove a Dodge Grand Caravan 25th Anniversary SXT, which doesn't even compare to this car. There are so many amazing features to choose from, such as the contoured look, power running boards, air conditioned and heated seats, rear heated seats, power folding third row seats, Microsoft Sync (which is too cool!), and the wonderful DVD entertainment system and expansive moon roof. My daughter even said that she feels like she's being driven to school in a limo!

  4. Robin Wiza 2024-09-26

We recently purchased a used 2011 Expedition and it has been a great fit for our needs. It rides and drives great, has plenty of storage, and overall we are very happy with it!

  5. Jesus Mertz 2024-09-09

I recently purchased a pre-owned Expedition and I absolutely love it! I looked at all the competition, including the QX56. However, in comparison to the Expedition, the QX felt tinny and the technology was lacking. The Expedition's biggest selling feature was the fact that parts like brakes and rotors are much more affordable than those of the Infinity. Additionally, with 4000 Ford dealers across the country compared to only 500 Infinity dealers, it's much more convenient to get service for my Expedition. Plus, it feels great to buy American! In this day and age, I can't see myself buying a Japanese car as they just seem to be cheaply made...
