The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common 2003 Ford Expedition problems

The 2003 Ford Expedition has several common problems that have been reported by owners. The most significant issue is related to the engine and engine cooling system, with 132 reports on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) page. Many of these complaints are about a potential fire hazard due to an ejected spark plug, causing fuel leaks and flames under the hood. Drivers have reported incidents as recent as 2013.

Electrical issues are the second most common problem for the 2003 Ford Expedition, with 113 complaints on file. A recurring issue involves water leaking into the ignition coil, causing the engine to misfire.

Powertrain issues are relatively uncommon, with only 59 complaints on file. However, drivers have reported problems such as transmission slip at highway speeds, jerking and stalling, and sudden loss of automotive power.

The 2003 Ford Expedition has a total of 650 complaints and 6 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which is low for a twenty-year-old SUV. RepairPal estimates that an older Expedition should cost around $657 a year to keep running, with the most expensive common repair being a replacement for a suspension shock or strut, starting at around $810.

Engine problems are one of the biggest and most dangerous issues with the Ford Expedition, particularly in earlier models like 2006 and 2004. Engine shutdown on the open road, rough engine performance, and difficulty changing spark plugs are some of the issues reported.

Accessory issues, such as air conditioning malfunctions, dashboard rattling, and seat belt problems, have also been reported in models like 2006 and 2005. These problems can be both dangerous and expensive for drivers.

Paint trouble, particularly with the 2005 model, has been a significant complaint, with users reporting peeling, chipping, and bubbling. This problem can result in costly detailed repairs.

According to carcomplaints.com, engine troubles, accessory issues, and paint problems are the top reasons that make the 2003 and 2004 Ford Expedition models worth avoiding.

True Delta reports that engine and air conditioning/electrical issues are the most common problems with the Ford Expedition, regardless of the model year. Transmission, suspension, and brakes are also areas that tend to experience more problems.

Ford Expedition owners have reported an extremely loud humming noise any time they drive their vehicle, making it difficult to hear other passengers or the radio. This issue has worsened over time, making the car almost too annoying to use.

The 2003 Ford Expedition has a 2/5 reliability rating, with 665 complaints, making it one of the least reliable model years for this vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-07
  • VIN: 1FMFU17L03L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Ford Expedition started randomly stalling and it stalled in the highway. The engine just shut down in the middle of the highway and it was such a scary a life endangering experience. This total loss of power in the middle of the highway when vehicles are traveling at highway speeds can cause death very, very easily to the occupants of the Ford Expeditions suffering this defect. I have been reading in many forums ( I have included the link to one of many forums) this is a common defect [XXX] ) many have Ford Expedition owners have experienced and have been very concerned and shocked that there was not recall. The issue is that the R303 relay (non serviceable fuel pump relay) fails very commonly on Ford Expeditions. In my Ford Expedition, the relay was melted. The fuel pump relay fails and cuts all current going to the fuel pump causing the engine to stall. This is a life-threatening risk caused by a defective fuse box with a defective fuel pump relay (R303). There were no warnings, the Ford Expedition just stalled randomly. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-28
  • VIN: 1fmfu18l33l
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: This vehicle has a faulty engine. The aluminum that Ford used to create the top end is too thin to support the pressure of the engine. As a result spark plugs explode from the engine at random with no warning. This has happened 5 times even after replacing all spark plugs, numerous coils and having kits installed by a mechanic sold by Ford to address the issue. $475 per kit from Ford. This is an enormous safety issue. The last one that blew out was on the highway with my two toddlers in the car.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-14
  • VIN: 1FMRU17W43L
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THIS IS THE 2ND TIME IT HAPPENED TO MY 2003 FORD EXPEDITION. WHILE DRIVING HEARD A LOUD POPPING NOISE, FOLLOWED BY CONTINUOUS POPPING LOUD POPPING NOISE LIKE A BROKEN EXHAUST MUFFLER, SOUNDED LIKE A MOTORCYCLE. AFTER INVESTIGATING, FOUND OUT THAT THE #3 SPARK PLUG POPPED OUT (EJECTED) OF THE HEAD CYLINDER, BROKE THE SPARK IGNITION COIL. WHEN THIS HAPPENED, I SMELLED FUEL, AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, SO I DID NOT DRIVE THE CAR AND TOWED THE CAR HOME. I HAD TO REPLACE THE IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG AND REINSTALLED THE SPARK PLUG BUT IT SEEMED TO BE STILL LOOSE, SO I TOOK IT OUT AND PUT THREAD LOCK AND REINSTALLED IT BUT DID NOT TIGHTEN IT TO THE MAX AND DID NOT START THE CAR TILL AFTER 24 HOURS SO THE THREAD LOCK WILL HOLD IT IN PLACE. YESTERDAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO #8 SPARK PLUG, IT ALSO BROKE THE COIL, AND WHEN I TRIED TO INSTALL THE NEW SPARK PLUG, FOUND OUT THAT THE THREADS ON THE HEAD CYLINDER WILL NOT GRAB THE SPARK PLUG, AND NOW I AM STUCK WITHOUT A CAR. WHEN I ASKED AROUND, PEOPLE SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THE FORD EXPEDTION. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND COULD KILL SOMEONE IF THE ENGINE CAUGHT ON FIRE, BECAUSE I SMELLED GAS AND SMOKE. IF THIS IS A COMMON DANGEROUS PROBLEM ON THE FORD EXPEDTION, HOW COME THERE IS NO RECALL FOR IT???? ARE WE WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO DIE DUE TO ENGINE / VEHICLE FIRE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE ASAP AND LET FORD FIX THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. SPARK PLUGS EJECTING OUT LIKE THIS? I NOTICED THAT THERE ARE ONLY 4 THREADS ON THE HEAD CYLINDER HOLDING THE PARK PLUG, BUT THE SPARK PLUG HAS 10 OR 11 THREADS AND OFCOURSE ONLY 4 OF THOSE THREADS ARE BEING HELD BY THE HEAD CYLINDER. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM WAITING TO HURT OR KILL SOMEONE, PLEASE ASK FORD TO FIX THIS BIG PROBLEM, THANK YOU....

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-06-01
  • VIN: 1fmru17l73l
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Faulty fuse panel. This is a known issue. It is ALL over the internet. There has never been a recall. The vehicle will stall while driving. On attempting restart or crank, there is a buzzing noise from the fuse panel. The pcm #203 I believe, corrodes or melts through the board on the panel causing the fault. Replacing the fuse/relay will correct, but for a time. Panel replacement is required. First incident at 165k. Second incident at about 205k. After the last panel replacement, the vehicle continued to stall. Another faulty fuse, for the day running lamps, caused a fault, which melted the housing between the panel and the wiring harness. The screw attachment is "crunchy" because of the melted elements. The smell is noticeable, and the panel requires replacement again. Third incident about 246k. This is a fire hazard. The wiring harness is hot to the touch. Being a KNOWN issue, having discussed on various socials and with ford dealer techs, this should have been recalled ages ago.

Negative 2003 Ford Expedition car reviews

It's been a good vehicle overall, but unfortunately, there have been numerous mechanical problems. During the warranty period, the only issue was with the drive shaft, which needs replacing again, but it won't. It rumbles when turning from a start. In the past year and a half, I've had to replace the cluster, intake manifold, and catalytic converter (Ford puts 4 instead of 1). Despite these repairs, it's still not working right, causing oxygen sensors to go bad several times. I've also had to replace both rear AC motors due to a thumping sound. The gas mileage is awful, but it could still be a good truck. Oh, and did I mention the ton of front brake dust? I hope this information helps.

We love the features that the Eddie Bauer has, such as heated/cooled seats, etc. However, we understand that you have experienced some issues with the back-up sensors failing, the paint peeling in many places, and the release cable for the back lid failing, among others. We are sorry to hear that you have had these problems. Additionally, we understand that the mileage is not up to your expectations. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help improve your experience with our product.

I think this car would be great for a family with two kids, as it has a DVD player and captain's chairs. However, I noticed an intermittent rattle in all windows after driving a few hundred miles. Although Ford did a service bulletin and replaced the molding on all windows, the rattle still persists in the driver's window. Unfortunately, the dealership will not repair it and Ford Corporate has declined to help. Therefore, I would advise potential buyers to be cautious. Additionally, the interior workmanship could be improved. In my opinion, a car that costs $42,000 should not have these issues.

The electrical system in this vehicle is subpar. While the prior 1997 Expedition had similar issues, we have decided that this is the final straw with Ford. As loyal customers since 1983, we have been disappointed with the constant problems and expenses. We cannot in good conscience recommend Ford products to anyone.

We've had a tough time with this truck from the start. We've experienced issues with the brakes squealing, the driver's side power seat motor going out, and the rear end needing to be worked on four times. Despite involving the Ford representative, the clutches in the rear end are still causing problems. Unfortunately, with 17,000 miles on the truck, we'll have to take a loss of several thousand dollars to trade it in. As a last resort, we've resorted to driving around Oklahoma City with lemon signs on the truck.

This truck is amazing! It can tow a 9,000+ pound boat and trailer without any problems. Although I had one issue with a bad sensor, the truck has been nothing but great. I bought it with 44,000 miles and now it has 65,000 miles, and the exterior and interior have held up great. There is some wear on the front bottom of the leather seats, but it's not bad. I would definitely buy another Expedition!

I was originally looking for a Cadillac Escalade, but after seeing the power folding third row seat ads on TV, I decided to stop by the Ford dealership. I test drove a Laser Red fully-equipped Eddie Bauer and ended up purchasing it. The Ford has more features than the Cadillac, and at a much more affordable price. I am really enjoying the ride, and the steering and braking are far superior to those of GM products.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Eddie Bauer! It's great to know that you've been able to put so many miles on it without any issues. It's also reassuring to hear that your friend has had similar results with their 1999 model. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope you continue to enjoy your vehicle for many more miles to come!

  4. Emery Yundt 2024-09-19

I have a 1999 Expedition and I still love driving it. The all-wheel drive makes this beast corner very well, and the highway mileage is impressive for the Triton V8. If you live in a true city area, you might want to shy away from this vehicle because traffic jams eat up the gas quickly. Stop-and-go traffic is rough on a 4000+ lb vehicle. However, other drivers, suburbs or otherwise, will be glad they no longer have to fear for their lives in the winter because it handles like a dream. Just remember to slow down, as you can go much faster than you can stop. To those critics who drive a Euro sports sedan - don't kid yourself, your car is no friend of the environment either.

Recently purchased new '03 ExpeditionXLT..am hugely impressed so far! Very well built truck, thoughtfully designed. Had a '98 Expedition (good truck as well) then traded it for a new Nissan Pathfinder.. always regretted that. Well, when it came time to trade in the Nissan I went straight to see the newly revamped & highly acclaimed Expedition. I don't regret buying another one! It's a superb truck!
