2015 Ford Expedition problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common 2015 Ford Expedition problems

The 2015 Ford Expedition has been reported to have various issues, particularly with the climate system and the engine.

One of the most common problems is related to the climate system, specifically the automatic climate system. Issues include electrical failure, refrigerant leakage, and problems with the AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, and heat system. These problems can result in the car not blowing air conditioning in the front without maneuvering the connection and can cost up to $1200 to fix. Additionally, some owners have experienced ongoing cabin air problems, with engine fumes being ingested into the heat system.

Another problem area for the 2015 Ford Expedition is the engine. There have been reports of engine problems at an average mileage of 52,184 miles, with 24 NHTSA complaints. These issues include engine stalling, rough running, and hesitation during acceleration. The engine problems can be intermittent, making them difficult to diagnose. Some owners have reported that changing the oil seems to fix the problem, but the exact cause remains unclear.

The 2015 Ford Expedition also has issues with the paint, with peeling or bubbling paint often paired with weird white dust. This problem is particularly common on models with aluminum body panels, and Ford has reportedly ignored the issue despite a technical service bulletin (TSB 19-2026) recommending the replacement of the affected panel.

In summary, the 2015 Ford Expedition has several common problems, including issues with the climate system, engine, and paint. These problems can be costly to fix and may require multiple visits to a mechanic or dealership to diagnose and repair.

  • VIN: 1FMJK1JT3FE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I left my recalled vehicle recall 22S56 for repair at Yadkin Valley Motor Co. on 7/27/23, I told them my A/C blower was not working, I had smelled smoke and had noticed the wiring was melted on the blower resistor connection. When I retrieved my vehicle on 7/28/23 I tried the A/C and it did not activate. The service tech. told me he inspected the blower motor connection only. I was not able to leave it there, I called Ford Customer service Case No. [XXX] on 7/28/23 I informed them of my problem and asked for an appointment with a more reputable Ford service dealer near me. While on the phone with Ford and service with Randy Marion Ford West Jefferson NC. I was informed that only the blower motor that was replaced by Yadkin valley motor co. was the only part covered by the recall even though the blower motor was the cause of the resistor electrical overload. I had to replace the blower resistor part myself 7/28/23, My A/C system is working now but I was informed by Randy Marion Ford that the blower that was installed is a temporary fix until the blowers that have been redesigned are distributed. “INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).”

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-19
  • VIN: 1FMJU1JT9FE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: AC stopped and vehicle smelled of burning and smoke. Contacted dealer to have recall 22S56 completed and advised the dealer that the blower motor resister and harness appeared to be melted. Dealer stated they were only responsible for replacing the blower motor and not the damaged components due to the faulty blower motor. This repair was completed June 30, 2023. Today 7/19/2023 the AC has again intermittently stopped working and the vehicle has a much stronger smoke odor and burning smell than before. I contacted Ford who states they will follow up with me in 2 days. This is not acceptable as there is an imminent danger of fire within the vehicle. The resistor and harness are visibly burnt and melted.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 1FMJU2AT9FE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I was towing a trailer on a freeway when I suddenly got a "wrench" light stating my engine was cutting power due to heat and before I knew what to do there my vehicle was coasting, and so I quickly as I could changed lanes and came to a stop just a foot from the white line on the right. Cars and trucks are whizzing by me at highway speeds and was luckily off the road enough not to get hit. I had three other passengers at the time in my vehicle. what failed: after getting my passengers safely in other vehicles at the next rest stop, the trailer that I was towing was hooked up by another person on the same trip, I had my vehicle brought home on a flatbed. Fast forward to this week when it was finally diagnosed at a transmission shop. I was informed a transmission cooling line had ruptured, sending all the transmission oil out of the case and bringing me to an abrupt end on the freeway. Had I not been able to get over I would have come to a halt on the freeway, putting myself and my passengers as well as others behind me at risk. The transmission shop confirmed the issue. Since we were going at highway speeds when the transmission coolant line ruptures the oil gushes out and i have very little time before the transmission will not work. The only warning was from the engine as the transmission oil got pumped out, I'm assuming the engine revved to compensate, creating more heat, then the warning light which only happened seconds before I had no way to move. I was pretty scared, but I had other passengers in the vehicle, so I had to remain calm. At the time I had no idea what happened. I asked the transmission shop manager if that was a serviceable item (I'm pretty sure it's not) and he confirmed transmission coolant lines should last the life of the vehicle. My vehicle is only 8 years old--that is a catastrophic failure of a non-moving part leading to almost instant transmission failure. I asked if debris could have broken the line--he said no.

Negative 2015 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Stan Larkin 2024-10-18

I recently had to have the throttle assembly replaced again, which seems to be an ongoing problem. However, aside from that, the vehicle is running fine and as expected. In my previous review, I mentioned the issue with the air-conditioned seats, which unfortunately is still a major problem. The way the seats are cooled now is a real shame and Ford really missed the mark on this one. Additionally, I have experienced more mechanical failures on this vehicle than on my previous ones, which is why I have downgraded my rating. At 24,000 miles, the struts needed to be replaced and at 33,000 miles, I had to have the throttle assembly replaced. Fortunately, these repairs were all covered under warranty. On a positive note, I recently purchased a 30-foot travel trailer and the Expedition is pulling it nicely with a weight distributing anti-sway hitch. I did have to change the exterior mirrors to an aftermarket brand because for some reason, Ford does not make a large telescoping mirror for the Expedition. Overall, I am disappointed with the 2015 design flaw of the air-conditioned seats, but I am still satisfied with the Expedition's performance and towing capabilities.

  2. Maximo Harber 2024-10-05

I've been a loyal Ford driver for 25 years and my 2015 Ford Expedition King Ranch has been a great vehicle overall. However, I've had an issue with the windshield that's been causing some inconvenience. Unfortunately, the windshield cracked just a month after I purchased the vehicle and it's been difficult to find a replacement due to the rain sensors. Despite this, I'm confident that Ford will be able to resolve this issue soon. While the rain sensing windshields are a nice feature, I would recommend holding off on this upgrade until replacement parts are more readily available.

  3. Brown Glover 2024-09-23

I have experienced recurring issues with the driver's side seat skirt bracket on my Expedition, which I have owned since 2/28/15. Despite bringing up my concerns with Villa Ford in Orange, CA during my 37500 oil change service, and being told that they would investigate the issue and contact Ford, I never received any follow-up. I even requested Ford's CSR number to lodge a formal complaint, but to no avail. It is disappointing that Ford has rejected my request to address this recurring issue, which I believe is due to poor craftsmanship and a weak bracket design. This is especially frustrating given that I have experienced the same issue with both my 2008 and 2017 third-generation Expeditions, which are both $50k trucks. While the dealership suggested that I use the retractable side steps to avoid putting weight on the bracket, this is not a practical solution for most people. It is my opinion that the bracket is not sturdy enough to hold a person's weight and is designed to fail. Despite this, I remain confident that Ford will eventually address this issue and improve the design of the bracket. Ford's poor quality and design of the seat skirt has left me with no choice but to not buy a Ford anymore. It is unacceptable to have to pay $700 every other year to repair a product that is not designed to break. As a customer, I expect better quality and design from Ford. The blame cannot be put on the customer when the team is contributing to the stress on the seat skirt. It is important for Ford to take responsibility for their product and ensure that their employees are properly trained to handle it. I have pictures to support my claim. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  4. Sherman Bartell 2024-09-14

I purchased the car used from a dealer with 35K miles. Unfortunately, at 77K miles, I experienced transmission and suspension issues. Despite the dealer suggesting a $10,000 repair, I decided to trade it in and purchase a German car instead. The German car offers superior technology, a better warranty, and comparable cargo space, while also providing a better ride and handling. I have no intention of purchasing an Expedition again.

  5. Enos Gleason 2024-07-11

This model unfortunately has a cam-phaser issue that requires a total motor replacement. While this may seem costly, it is the best solution to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle. Although it is disappointing to have to replace the motor, it is important to note that there are no other issues with the car and it has the potential to last another 10 years or 150,000 miles. It is unfortunate that this experience has led to a negative perception of Ford, but it is important to remember that every car brand has its own unique challenges. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I can tell you that I absolutely adore my expedition. This is actually my second one, and I have never had any issues with either of them. They have never left me stranded or broken down on the side of the road.

I am pleased to report that this is my third Expedition, and like the previous two, it has proven to be highly reliable with no issues, even after reaching 200,000 miles. I have taken it on several long trips, including two three-hour drives and an eight-hour drive to the Florida Keys, with six passengers and luggage on the roof, and it still provided a smooth and efficient ride. The gas mileage is excellent, and the vehicle is impressively quiet. While the glove box and fog lights could be improved, these are minor issues. The interior materials could also be upgraded to include more leather, but overall, the seats are comfortable, and the ride is tight, quiet, and smooth. I highly recommend considering the Limited model, which offers more features than the XLT and a better ride on 20-inch tires compared to 18-inch ones. The 3.5 V6 engine is surprisingly fast, and I have been able to achieve exceptional mileage of around 45 to 50 mpg by eco-driving. After comparing it to other SUVs, I confidently chose the Ford Expedition. I hope you find this information helpful.

I bought a used one, gave it some TLC, and now it runs great. It's comfortable, solid, and powerful, but it is a bit heavy. I got a good return on my investment. After taking care of some overdue maintenance, I saw a significant improvement in gas mileage.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Limited version car. I bought it as a demo and it has been amazing! With only 102,000 miles, it has been totally reliable and I haven't had to make any repairs. Plus, everything still works perfectly, including the sunroof. It's been a great ride and I'm looking forward to many more years with it. Take care! 11-21-2023

I'm so glad to hear that you're happy with your car! It sounds like you've made some great modifications to the engine with the extra air and chip tuning. It's wonderful to hear that your car is running so smoothly.
