2013 Ford Expedition problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

And now a few times it has downshifted HARD from a high gear to a low one causing us to be in danger on the highway, now fearing for our safety. Now turning off the key is not fixing the problem. It shows a code for output shaft speed sensor circuit fault.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-28
  • VIN: 1FMJK2A58DE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Since more than 18 months, we have the known intermittent problem described in TSB [XXX], where all of a sudden the wrench appears, speedometer drops to zero and car can't change gear anymore. Sometimes going to manual gears works, sometimes car needs to be stopped, locked and completely shut down several times for the problem to go away. Before turning off, error P0720 appears (as described in TSB [XXX]). Car taken to garage in January 2023 where it was for 3 weeks. Technicians drove it for 11 miles (!) and could not reproduce the problem so could not do the required work ie changing the molded leadframe. Now, in January 2024 the problem happened again and this time the Check Engine light came on. The same error code P0720 was now permanently stored. Took the car to the garage, where they were able to diagnose the problem and ... replaced the molded leadframe. This at an out of pocket cost of $1,300. Contacted Ford and they say there is no program or financial assistance in place for this problem, despite all the information that can be found. It is clear this a general problem of all 6R80 gearboxes beyond the time periods stated in the recall. Ford is negligent by not doing a recall on all cars having this gearbox. Nobody is looking at this issue at Ford, when creating a case number they say no program exists, and state paperwork and proof can be sent to a PO BOX in Dearborn (not even an email address to send attachments in this 21st century). All ways to discourage people to react, send in documents or claim documents did not arrive. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-25
  • VIN: 1FMJU1K51DE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The transmission is shifting dangerously. All the lights on the dash are flashing and the speedometer doesn't work. We were driving at highway speed and the transmission shifted into first gear causing an abrupt slowing of the Expedition. When we stopped at a red light the vehicle would remain in third gear and therefore we couldn't accelerate from a stopped position. This was previously addressed in TSB 13-6-8. There are many Ford vehicles on the road with this dangerous problem. I'm requesting that you encourage Ford to repair the transmission lead frame for the life of the vehicle. As second owner of this vehicle, I never received the notice of this problem and didn't discover it until after I was having problems. We drove 80 miles home Christmas day with our emergency flashers on because nothing was open. Ford service was closed on Monday December 26. On Tuesday, December 27 we took vehicle for repairs. We were notified that our extended warranty expired on Monday December 26, so they are not going to pay. This is a well documented problem that Ford has had and I've read many complaints from their customers. To make matters worse the transmission lead frame is on National backorder and Ford cannot repair my vehicle. I refuse to drive it because I'm afraid it will come to an abrupt stop while I'm driving.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-24
  • VIN: 1fmjk1h53de
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Lug Nuts cannot be removed due to defective design. Impossible to properly maintain tires or to remove wheel in case of roadside emergency. Each wheel has 6 lug nuts that must ALL work properly together. All 24 of my lug nuts had to be forcibly removed/replaced in order to perform tire maintenance and to be proactive against the safety risk of malfunction while being operated on the road. Ford has never made me aware of this issue. Krause Ford in Woodstock Georgia inspected the lug nuts and recommended replacement at my expense due Ford Corporate not recognizing this as a problem with their product. Tire/wheel maintenance is an important safety issue.

  • VIN: 1FMJU2A51DE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Transmission fluid cooler line ruptured causing loss of propulsion. There is a known and common problem with the cooler lines breaking at the fitting where the Transmission lines meet the cooler. There is a meeting of dis-similar metals (Aluminum and Steel) in this fitting that is thought to increase the risk of fracture. There are multiple reports of the fitting fracturing in the same place in Ford Forums and Youtube videos. This affects the Ford F150s, Expeditions and similar Lincoln models.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-30
  • VIN: 1FMJU1J54DE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My vehicle suddenly shifted into first gear causing it to slow down abruptly. If someone were behind me there would be a high probability that they would hit me from behind since the slowdown was caused by a down shift and there would be no brake lights. This same thing happened to me two years ago and I brought it to the Ford dealer for service. They did not try to reproduce the problem because there is a TSB 19B05. They reprogrammed the Powertrain module. I did not experience this problem again until 8/30/2021 (I think, it could have been 8/23). At which point I started looking into this. Apparently Ford knows this is a problem and has extended the warranty on the affected part (see Customer Satisfaction Program 19N01). But, they will not perform the needed repair unless I have the Wrench light on my dashboard. There is every indication that my vehicle has a problem with OSS sensor because three times (in the past few weeks) my vehicle has either downshifted or failed to shift out of first gear and all three times the speedometer read 0 (not operational) even though I was going 25 - 30 mph. I think there should be a recall on this part because if I was going at a high rate of speed in heavy traffic this would be a disaster. In the mean time I am driving on side roads hoping that the light comes on so that I can get this fixed. I looked into having the repair done and the estimate is $1100.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-27
  • VIN: 1fmju2a53de

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-18
  • VIN: 1FMJU1H50DE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While I was driving my vehicle on the highway it just downshifted from 5th gear to a much lower gear causing my vehicle to come to an almost complete stop in traffic. Also my speedometer quit working and my vehicle transmission was stuck in the lower gear. I had to pull off on the shoulder during traffic and avoid being hit by another car. I was able to turn the vehicle and then restart it to get the transmission to shift into another gear. I was fortunate enough to be able to get home but that did not correct the issue Ford created to my and my family's safety. Ford knows this is an issue and had a recall out there for the issue but because my vehicle is out of the mileage for the warranty they will not repair the issue at their cost. The dealership confirmed the issue is the same as the recall-- replacement of transmission molded leadframe is necessary. Ford will not cover the repair cost because it is out of the mileage and also the extended date 11/30/2019.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-08
  • VIN: 1FMJK2A54DE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Personal experience matches exactly the symptoms identified and described in Ford TSB 13-6-8. The downshift and immediate power train reduction in speed has thrown the passengers forward and prompted immediate control issues. To date the tires have not locked up on this VIN but there are numerous reports of that situation.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-05
  • VIN: 1FMJU2A53DE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHEN TURNING THE CAR ON THE FRONT AIR CONDITIONER VENTS WON'T BLOW MOST OF THE TIME. IF THE WIRING UNDER THE DASH ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IS TAPPED/BUMPED IT WILL THEN START BLOWING. IT STOPS BLOWING AND STARTS BLOWING AGAIN WHEN BUMPED. THE WIRING GETS HOT. THERE ARE MULTIPLE CASES OF THIS BEING DESCRIBED ON THE INTERNET. THERE IS SOMEONE WHO STATES THEIR VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED TO A SKELTON WITHIN 5 MINUTES. THIS IS NOT SAFE AND SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM.THIS HAPPENS AT ALL TIMES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING WITH THE AC TURNED ON. THE VEHICLE CAN BE EITHER STATIONARY OR MOVING. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN JULY 2020 AND IT'S BEEN HAPPENING ANY TIME THE AC IS RUNNING.

Negative 2013 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Jamir Kris 2024-09-19

I experienced a computer malfunction in my brand new vehicle, which disabled the ABS and directional signals, and detected a system fault in the navigation. The vehicle is currently being serviced by the dealer and is expected to be ready by Thursday, after a week in service. As a loyal Ford customer, this has been a disappointing experience for me.

  2. Unique Lebsack 2024-07-15

I bought my Expedition with high hopes, big engine, nice looks, and some high-end equipment, and for $56,000 I couldn't beat it. After dealing with the tedious process of negotiating, I left the lot with my new car. Immediately, I noticed that the steering felt quite numb. I mean, it's a truck, so I didn't expect it to be sporty, but I was hoping for some feel. My other major dislike about this car is that the interior quality isn't the greatest. There are uneven gaps, poor materials, and hard surfaces, which is something I wasn't expecting for almost 60k. Overall, I've put almost 90,000 miles on my Expedition, and the resale value is looking good. It still feels put together. If you're in the market for a full-size SUV, I would recommend taking a look at it. However, I would much more recommend the Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon, or the Chevy Tahoe or Suburban.

  3. Vladimir Bashirian 2024-07-03

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2010 Expedition. I had an issue with the power window motor shortly after purchasing it in November 2009. The dealership greased it up and said it was fine, but unfortunately, it turned out to be the beginning of a frustrating situation. Over the past year, I've had to bring it in for the same issue nine times, and it still hasn't been resolved. I'm a lifelong Ford fan, but I'm starting to consider other options. Thank you for listening!

  4. Lionel Vandervort 2024-06-27

My 3rd and most expensive expedition is a Limited edition with almost every option available. However, I have been frustrated with the power windows. They tend to malfunction during the winter and have now failed on both the passenger and driver side during the summer. Despite being less than 2 years old, I am looking at over $700 in repairs. It is unacceptable that a car worth $55,000 cannot have power windows that work properly. Ford should invest in hiring an engineer who can design a reliable power window. This experience has left me disappointed with my last Expedition.

  5. Tristian O'Keefe 2024-05-11

This is my wife's dream car. After driving it for 2 weeks and taking a 3-hour road trip, I have to say that it is quite an expensive vehicle. As someone who has been a Ford enthusiast for years, I was disappointed with the 5.4 V8 engine's performance, even with 6 spd downshifts. While I loved my 97F150, this truck did not meet my expectations. It handles like a brick and wallows in the wind. Additionally, the recommended 7500 miles between oil changes may lead to increased engine wear, which is not covered by the warranty. This could result in excessive oil leakage and low compression before 100k miles. Lastly, the front headrest is uncomfortable and nonadjustable. However, I understand that everyone has different preferences and experiences. Thank you for letting me share mine.

Positive 2013 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Edmund Padberg 2025-01-03

My kids recently purchased the Expedition during the Christmas holidays, so this review may be biased towards the 'we love it' factor. However, I must say that the Expedition has been great so far. It has plenty of room for their growing family, handles well in the snow (which is a plus, given the harsh winter in the NW), and they got over 20 miles to the gallon of gas on their trip from Oregon back home to Montana. It's a beautiful, safe, and very comfortable vehicle that handles like a dream. What more could you ask for? Although these 5.4 modular engines can be problematic, most issues were resolved by 2010. This particular Expedition had low miles and appeared to be well-maintained by its previous owner. An update one year later: the unit has been great. I did have to fix a couple of small things (1 window regulator for $55.00 and 1 fan control for $38.00) due to lack of maintenance by the previous owner, but other than that, the Expedition has worked without any problems. I would still highly recommend it.

I'm so glad to hear that you're happy with your car! It sounds like you've made some great modifications to the engine with the extra air and chip tuning. It's wonderful to hear that your car is running so smoothly.

I love my Expedition Ltd.! It's so roomy and easy to drive, with great visibility. Plus, it's super dependable and doesn't require high maintenance costs (as long as I follow the standard maintenance schedule). The fact that it uses FlexFuel also makes it much more economical in today's market. This is actually my second Ford Expedition, and I have to say they've been the best two vehicles I've ever owned!

We've been driving the Limited for over a month now and it's been both practical and enjoyable. We opted for the upgraded package which includes 20's Nav, moon roof, deployable running boards, heated/cooled seats, and rear load leveling suspension. The ride is smooth and quiet. We were initially considering both the Yukon and Expedition, but after test driving and comparing the cost and features of each, the Expedition was the clear winner. Also, at the moment, I preferred not to drive a Government Motors car, although I do love GMC cars.

    It's really big!
