2014 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-05
- VIN: 1FMJU2A50EE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: My mother in law contacted me and stated her 2014 ford expedition’s transmission felt like it was failing. I drove same the next day. As I was test driving the vehicle at approximately 60mph down a U.S. highway, I hear a “clunk” noise and then immediately the RPMs went up and the vehicle downshifted into 1st gear causing the vehicles’s wheel to lock up. I went sliding down the highway and luckily didn’t not collide with another vehicle. I had the vehicle scanned and same displayed PO722 output speed sensor codes. After further research, I discovered that her transmission is the same model and design as the 6R80 transmissions that were installed from 2011-2017. The 6R80 transmission lead frames were recalled for years 2011-2013 for the exact same safety issue that I encountered. For some reason Ford has done nothing for the 2014 models. This is a huge safety concern. Myself as well as my child could have been seriously hurt or worse as well as the other innocent motorists that were driving around me. Now we are forced to pay $1500 to have a safety issue fixed that in my opinion should be covered due to the safety concern as well as the fact that Ford is already aware of this lead frame issue that occurs in the previous year model. I understand that things happen and parts break but there is no excuse for a vehicle to downshift into 1st gear while traveling 60 and 70mph down the highway and nothing be done to fix the issue from the manufacturer.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-11
- VIN: 1FMJK1K55EE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My A/C went out, but began coming on and shutting off. I drove from my home to work, approximately 6 miles, and parked in the parking lot. In the parking lot, I began to smell burning and my SUV began smoking. I turned my SUV off and got out of the car. As I got out, coolant was pouring onto the pavement. When the hood was popped, we noted the coolant boiling which caused the cap to pop off and the coolant to pour out. I had my vehicle towed to Coconut Point Ford to be diagnosed. I was told there was a fuse blown, the control unit and wire harness was melted and the interior blower motor needed to be replaced. Upon research, I noted the 2015-2017 blower motors were recalled for this exact reason. I thought my truck was going to catch fire. I have videos of everything as it was happening and will share if needed.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-30
- VIN: 1FMJU1H51EE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Wednesday December 28th, 2022. Vehicle gave a short ding while stopped at a traffic light. Dashboard vacillated back and forth between low tire pressure, and empty gas tank. Vehicle was holding half a tank of gas. Upon take off from traffic light speedometer stopped working. Drove 20 miles home and turned off vehicle. Husband took for check drive, everything was working. Friday December 30, 2022 while traveling 65 miles an hour on the freeway, vehicle made a fleeting strange noise coming from the dash. Vehicle involuntarily downshifted to first gear causing vehicle to skid down the highway, tires smoking, out of control. Husband was able to come to a stop at the side of the highway without harming us or anyone else on the road. Engine was revving as if someone was pushing on the gas pedal. Engine was quickly turned off. Eventually vehicle was restarted and showed no signs of what had happened a few minutes before. Made it home without incident on side roads traveling at a low speed. Without the excellent driving skills of my husband, we would have lost control and crashed. At a busier hour multiple vehicles would have plowed into the back of us injuring or killing many. We were both traumatized by the takeover of our vehicle. And yes, the incident could have very well been a detriment to our lives and the lives of others on the road. Vehicle has been parked. Husband visited local Ford dealership explaining what happened. Representative was very well aware of the situation my husband described. He said it has to do with the power train control module. Parts are not available and will not be for months. These parts have been recalled by Ford up to 2013. Ford will not replace part or reset powertrain on our vehicle which is 2014. Quote to fix our vehicle is 3,000.00 dollars and possibly more depending on what the lock down did to our engine and transmission. On top of that it could be months before they can have to parts to fix it. Vehicle is unsafe.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-06
- VIN: 1FMJK1H52EE
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Both my third row seat belts, driver and passenger side, have come unstitched. Luckily we were not needing them, my son was buckling up at the time of failure. I have an extended warranty on the car from Ford and was told they cover the second row seat belts but not the third row.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 166,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-30
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1FMJK2A58EE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Air conditioner stopped working; we pulled to side of street and shut engine off. Restarted engine and smoke started coming out of air conditioner vent on passenger side then out of front dash. Shut engine off again and called AAA for tow truck. Tow truck came about an hour and a half later. Tow truck driver turned ignition key to put car in neutral and began pulling it up onto flat bed. Smoke started coming from front area of dash and out through vents at bottom of windshield. Tow truck driver rolled car back down onto street. Smoke got extremely thick. My husband opened front passenger door and saw fire in the floor under the glove box. He tried to pick up this piece of equipment to throw it out of the car thinking it would save the rest of the vehicle, and this is how he got burned fingers. The fire quickly started spreading and we tried to get some belongings out of car while tow truck driver called 911. Fire Department came and put out fire. Vehicle was totally burned up. There were no warnings of any kind before the incident. Husband had third degree burns on fingers of right hand. If we hadn't been stopped and engine shut off, we possibly could have been killed because the vehicle was totally engulfed in flames within three minutes after fire began.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-02
- VIN: 1FMJK1J52EE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The SUV gets stuck in first gear and randomly downshifts into first gear regardless of the speed. When pulling out into traffic the SUV will randomly get stuck in first gear and cannot gain speed. I took it to the Ford dealership in September of 2021 and they determined that it was the transmission molded lead frame. This part had a Ford TSB on 2011-2013 Expeditions and Ford replaced the part at no charge on 2011-2013 models. This is the same problem on my 2014 Expedition. Ford ordered a new part in September of 2021at my expense. Today is 2/15/2022 and the part is still not in and the problem continues and is getting worse.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-14
- VIN: 1FMJK1K50EE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Transmission will suddenly shift gear while driving. On one occasion it downshifted to 1st gear as I was travelling down the highway at 70 mph with my family in the vehicle. Tires locked up and vehicle slid but I was able to regain control and did not hit anything. In addition, in multiple occasions the Instrument Panel shuts off all the gauges for the exception of the RPM's and shows a wrench and loosing some power. Also while driving at low speeds the transmission disengages and slips but no sign of transmission issues. On all instances above I parked the vehicle, shut off for a minute, restart and drove away like nothing happened. No codes, no warnings. Brought it to several mechanics and they are not able to tell me whats wrong. Spoke to Ford and they said is nothing they have seen on the Ford Expedition but the symptoms are similar to an issue on a F-150. I'm very concerned as this can happened at any time and I know if it happens on snow It will probably cause a major accident. Don't feel safe driving the vehicle.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-10
- VIN: 1FMJK1J58EE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I was driving down the street at 40mph when all of a sudden the transmission down shifted into first gear. Because this happened on its own, there were no brake lights to warn the car behind me that I was slowing down at a rapid rate. The wrench symbol flashed on the dashboard and went away, so I took the vehicle to a Ford dealer the next morning when they opened up.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-10
- VIN: 1FMJK1J58EE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I was sitting sat a stop light, when the light turned green, I stepped on the gas pedel but the car did not move. I took my foot off the gas, let the engine rpm go down, then stepped on the gas again. As the engine rpm went up, the transmission dropped into gear with a loud, jerking cluck sound. The dashboard flashed and then went dead. I had no speedometer, fuels, coolant, voltage gages, the only thing that worked was the tacometer. I pulled over and turned the car off, but when I started the car again, all the gages worked as normal and drove fine until the next incident.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Limited version car. I bought it as a demo and it has been amazing! With only 102,000 miles, it has been totally reliable and I haven't had to make any repairs. Plus, everything still works perfectly, including the sunroof. It's been a great ride and I'm looking forward to many more years with it. Take care! 11-21-2023

I love my Expedition Ltd.! It's so roomy and easy to drive, with great visibility. Plus, it's super dependable and doesn't require any high maintenance costs (just follow the standard maintenance schedule). And with its FlexFuel feature, it's even more economical in today's market. This is actually my second Ford Expedition, and I have to say they're the best vehicles I've ever owned!

It's really big!

When we upgraded from a 12’ Scamp to a 23’ Outback, we needed to upgrade our tow vehicles as well. We were initially considering a Yukon or Suburban, but after test driving a 2012 Expedition Limited, we were blown away by its quality and features. Although the Chevy would have done the job, it rode like a truck, very stiff and harsh. The Ford, on the other hand, was very quiet and smooth with its air ride independent rear suspension, 20’ all terrain tires, and capable towing capacity. Handling is surprisingly easy, and taking it out into the forest service roads is never a problem. Rarely is 4x4 ever needed, and in snow, just a flick to 4x automatic is all that’s needed. This thing weighs out at 5,500, so it’s a beast. But my 1986 full-size Bronco weighed 6,800. Ford did a lot of weight trimming here. Some people complain about the interior trim, but it all works and is thoughtfully laid out. The pedals even adjust! Our Expedition has just over 220,000 miles on the original drivetrain. One big recommendation is to never miss an oil change (NEVER). The variable valve timing, camshafts, lifters, timing train all depend on clean fresh oil ALL THE TIME, so keep up on the maintenance schedule. The upside to this is that you can get one cheap, with a bad engine and do an (expensive) rebuild and still come out ahead (if you are a sadist). The engines are complicated pieces. But…if you wanted to throw $ at it you could go crazy (twin cam anyone?). But stock is just fine for most of the universe. A recent trip from Missoula Montana to Olympia Washington, in winter, over several mountain passes, lots of slow going in 4x auto, got me to 18.5 mpg loaded. Considering the size, the safety, the convenience and comfort, it was worth the price. We were initially looking for a Chevy, but we ultimately chose Ford for the long haul. Keep an open mind and you’ll be surprised at what the universe has to offer you.

I have experienced recurring issues with the driver's side seat skirt bracket on my Expedition, which I have owned since 2/28/15. Despite bringing up my concerns with Villa Ford in Orange, CA during my 37500 oil change service, and being told that they would investigate the issue and contact Ford, I never received any follow-up. I even requested Ford's CSR number to lodge a formal complaint, but to no avail. It is disappointing that Ford has rejected my request for financial assistance, despite this being a recurring issue on both my 2008 and 2017 third-generation Expeditions. The bracket appears to be poorly designed and unable to withstand the weight of a person sliding across the seat when exiting the vehicle. While the dealership suggested using the retractable side steps to avoid this issue, I observed a Villa Ford employee exiting the car incorrectly, as per their own advice. It is my opinion that this is a serial defect and a result of poor craftsmanship, which is unacceptable for a $50k truck.Ford's poor quality and design of the seat skirt has left me with no choice but to not buy a Ford anymore. It is unacceptable to have to pay $700 every other year to repair a product that is not designed to break. As a customer, I expect better quality and design from Ford. The blame cannot be put on the customer when the team is contributing to the stress on the seat skirt. It is important for Ford to take responsibility for their product and ensure that their employees are properly trained to handle it. I have pictures to support my claim. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This model unfortunately has a cam-phaser issue that requires a total motor replacement. While this may seem costly, it is the best solution to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle. Despite this setback, it is important to note that there are no other issues with the car and it has the potential to last for many years to come. We understand the frustration this may cause, but we assure you that we stand behind our products and are committed to providing the best possible solutions for our customers.

I bought my Expedition with high hopes, big engine, nice looks, and some high-end equipment, and for $56,000 I couldn't beat it. After dealing with the tedious process of negotiating, I left the lot with my new car. Immediately, I noticed that the steering felt quite numb. I mean, it's a truck, so I didn't expect it to be sporty, but I was hoping for some feel. My other major dislike about this car is that the interior quality isn't the greatest. There are uneven gaps, poor materials, and hard surfaces, which is something I wasn't expecting for almost 60k. Overall, I've put almost 90,000 miles on my Expedition, and the resale value is looking good. It still feels put together. If you're in the market for a full-size SUV, I would recommend taking a look at it. However, I would much more recommend the Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon, or the Chevy Tahoe or Suburban.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2008 and 2014 Expedition Limited trucks. I absolutely love them, but I have had some repairs done over the years, totaling about 15k. I did have some issues with the window and retracting running board motors being underpowered, but the biggest problem was with the paint jobs. Unfortunately, Ford has hidden some pretty bad paint jobs from the public, and both of my trucks had to be repainted after some fighting with Ford. Even my 2014 started peeling again just 2 months after Ford repainted it under warranty at 34k miles. It's frustrating because a 65k vehicle deserves a better paint job, and I know many people feel the same way. Despite these issues, I always take out an extended warranty, so thankfully much of this was covered. Thanks for listening!
