2002 Ford Expedition problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common 2002 Ford Expedition problems

The Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV produced since 1997, is known for its spacious cabin and innovative features. However, like any vehicle, it can develop issues as it accumulates mileage. This article will focus on common problems with the 2002 Ford Expedition, based on complaints from owners.

  • Bubbling Paint: 2005 Ford Expedition owners have reported bubbling paint issues, with the problem occurring at an average mileage of 54,000 and costing approximately $4200 to repair.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure has been reported in the 2004 Ford Expedition, typically occurring at an average mileage of 76,000 and costing around $2700 to fix.
  • Spark Plug Ejection: A common problem across multiple model years, including the 2003 Ford Expedition, is the ejection of spark plugs from the cylinder head. This issue can be less severe in the 2002 model but still poses a risk. The most common fix is simply replacing the spark plugs.
  • Blower Motor: Some owners have reported that the blower motor only works on high, affecting the vehicle's climate control system.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coil failure is another issue that has been reported by Ford Expedition owners, which can lead to engine misfires and reduced performance.
  • Air Suspension Failure: The 2000 Ford Expedition has been known to have issues with its air suspension, which can cost up to $1,500 to repair.

While these issues can be concerning, regular maintenance and addressing problems as they arise can help keep your Ford Expedition in good condition. It is essential to stay informed about potential problems and to consult a trusted mechanic for advice and repairs.

The contact stated that while his fiancée was attempting to drive the vehicle the following day, the brake pedal was depressed but was firm, requiring the contact's fiancée to step on the brake pedal to drive. The brake pedal remained on the floorboard and was inoperable, causing the contact's fiancée to shift to park(P) to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the speed control deactivation switch (SCDS) connectors had burned, and the brake fluid had leaked from the brake fluid reservoir. The dealer replaced the SCDS sensor and harness under NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V388000 (Vehicle Speed Control). The dealer declined to perform repairs for collateral damages. The contact stated that he was an auto-electrician mechanic who owned an auto shop. The vehicle was then towed to the contact's auto repair shop, where mechanics replaced the brake master cylinder and cleaned brake fluid off the engine bay. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 163,745.

Negative 2002 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Garfield Zemlak 2024-08-06

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Expo. I purchased it back in February and I have to say, it's been awesome! I especially love the Eddie Bauer option. However, I did have a couple of minor issues with it. The tailgate was closing too tight and scraping the paint, but luckily it was an easy fix and was covered under warranty. I also had to replace the rear wiper motor because it got stuck in the rear glass window and stripped the motor. Again, this was covered under warranty and the process was hassle-free. Overall, I'm still very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the Expo to anyone in the market for a new car.

  2. Billy Friesen 2024-08-04

I bought my expo for its look, size, and extras, but unfortunately, I soon realized that it has some issues. Despite having the air conditioner worked on four times, hot air still comes out of the rear vents. Additionally, the celinoid has gone bad, there may be a cracked head gasket, and the passenger side mirror will not adjust to the correct position. The gas mileage is also not great. Although the room and interior are fantastic, the little problems have left me stranded in 13-degree weather twice. Oh well, live and learn!

  3. Mortimer Swaniawski 2024-07-27

Excellent car for the price! It's very reliable and quick. I totally agree that the engine could be quieter, just like the Toyota Land Cruiser.

  4. Jackson Hintz 2024-07-24

Gas has become too expensive for this truck. Additionally, finding parking in most lots can be quite a challenge.

  5. Alf Larkin 2024-04-01

This family is on their second Expedition. Their first was a '99 XLT which had no major problems, except for a windshield wiper issue and a rear wiper motor that went out, in 66K miles. However, their '02 Eddie Bauer (the subject of this review) has had some issues after 44K miles. The rear sensing system and driver's heated seat element failed, and there were some minor build issues such as the headlight/foglamp switch falling apart and the rear quarter pop-out windows being noisy when operating. Unfortunately, the transmission also failed at 44K miles. Due to Ford/dealer not standing behind their product, the reviewer will consider looking at the competition when the lease expires. Dear Ford/dealer, you have lost a repeat customer.

Positive 2002 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Richmond Kunze 2024-11-22

I'm almost at 60k miles now and my SUV still drives like it's brand new. The build quality is very impressive and the power is consistent, with smooth shifting and easy towing. The quad captains chairs make it easy to access the third row seat. Recently, I noticed that the steering was a little off, but after checking my tire pressures, I found that all four tires were low and different. I filled them to the recommended PSI (30/front and 35/rear for mine) and the steering was perfect again. The fuel economy is typical, not great, with 15-16 tops on the highway. In conclusion, I plan on keeping mine for a while.

  2. Marty Schuppe 2024-11-08

Pros: This is one of the best vehicles I have ever driven. It is comfortable for both front and second-row passengers, although it may be a little tight for those in the third row. However, the cons are that for a new truck, three visits to the dealer for warranty work is too much. During the winter, the front driver window would take several attempts to open, and the solenoid needed replacing. Additionally, one of the tires blew with only 16,000 miles. Despite these issues, I am still very happy with the vehicle.

I usually get a new car every 2 years, but I've kept this one longer than any other. With three active boys, we've taken 3 cross country trips without any problems. The VHS entertainment package has been a life saver on those trips, and the 4.6L engine has enough power to haul trailers, boats and horses.

I had a 98 expy prior to purchasing the 2002, and I'm still in love with the vehicle. Additionally, the 2002 has the rear entertainment system which is great for the kids when we're headed to the mountains for camping or any other long trip. Believe me, for those with kids, your wife will love this feature!

This vehicle not only looks great, but it's also a pleasure to drive. The leather seats are extremely comfortable, and there's tons of room. The sound system, with its 6 CD changer, is terrific. The big V-8 and tow package make pulling trailers a snap. Although there's an annoying tendency for the driver's side window to occasionally 'pop' into place when closed while driving, it's still a great car. Fuel efficiency is not bad at 13.6 mpg on the highway. Let's face it, it's a luxury station wagon on steroids!
