2016 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

- Summary: Steering wheel is loose and wobbly as if it will fall off. I noticed that Ford issued a recall in March 2018 for this problem (see below) however it does not include my 2016 Ford Expedition that is having the exact same issue. DEARBORN, Mich., March 14, 2018 – Ford Motor Company is issuing two safety recalls in North America. Details are as follows: Select 2014-18 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles for loose steering wheel bolts that could lead to a steering wheel detaching from steering column Ford is issuing a safety recall in North America for approximately 1.3 million 2014-18 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles for potentially loose steering wheel bolts that could result in a steering wheel detaching from the steering column. In affected vehicles, the steering wheel bolt may not maintain torque, allowing the bolt to loosen over time, and if not serviced, a steering wheel could potentially detach and lead to a loss of steering control and increased risk of a crash. Ford is aware of two accidents with one injury allegedly related to this condition. Affected vehicles include: 2014-17 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Aug. 6, 2013 to Feb. 29, 2016 2014-18 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, July 25, 2013 to March 5, 2018 2014-18 Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, July 25, 2013 to March 5, 2018 The recall involves approximately 1,378,637 vehicles in North America with 1,301,986 in the United States and federalized territories, 62,479 in Canada and 14,172 in Mexico. The Ford reference number for this recall is 18S08. Dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt on the vehicle with a longer bolt with more robust thread engagement and larger nylon patch placed properly for proper torque retention— at no cost to customers.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 165,335.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-08
- VIN: 1FMJU1JT7GE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The blower motor harness melted for the second time. The blower motor was replaced with the recall part and it has melted again. This is causing the blower motor to cut off at any given moment. I must then reach under the dash and push the wires in order for the blower motor to work again. I have read that this is a known problem in expeditions. Why isn’t this part under recall? Does the blower motor cause the harness to melt? I believe it is the cause.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
- VIN: 1FMJU1JT8GE
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Airbag light came on and has since went off. The left buttons on the steering wheel intermittingly work both leading to a clockspring issue. There is a recall for 2016 F250 clockspring due to airbag issue and the 2016 Expedition uses the same part number clockspring. I think this recall should add other Ford models that use the exact same defective part in question.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-22
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1FMJK1MT6GE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: In June 2023 there was a strong burning smell in our 2016 Expedition's cabin. We took the vehicle to a mechanic and they found that a small fire had started around the blower motor that burned up the wires in/around the blower motor. The mechanic replaced the control board and harness. They replaced parts AAABL3Z-19E624-B and AAAFLlZ-188518-G. Then in August 2023 I received a recall notice from Ford for the blower motor. This was the first correspondence I had received from Ford that the blower motor had been recalled. I contacted a Ford dealer, Apple Ford Lincoln in Apple Valley, MN, on August 9th and requested reimbursement for the above parts along with a replacement of the blower motor under the recall. I have been calling and emailing the dealer weekly since August 9th and continue to be told the blower motor under the recall has been on backorder for months with no ETA on the part. On the morning of 10/16/2023, I smelled a burning smell in the cabin of the vehicle similar to the smell from June 2023 and the smell was still present after the vehicle sitting for 3 hours after driving. I would appreciate support with this issue.

The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the clockspring needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact had received a recall letter for his 2016 Ford F-250 for NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V337000 (Air Bags). The independent mechanic advised the contact that the 2016 Ford Expedition used the same clockspring as the 2016 Ford F-250. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-08
- VIN: 1FMJU2ATXGE
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving on the freeway our 2016 Ford Expedition's engine went into "Limp Mode" causing total loss of power. We barely were able to move into the slow lane and place hazard lights on while cars ran up on us slamming on their brakes to avoid a collison with our disabled vehicle. There was less than three feet of shoulder against a concrete barrier for us to stop. The dash showed a large yellow wrench and engine was running extremely rough. After turning engine off and back on we accelerated into on coming traffic to find the nearest exit hoping that the engine would keep running. We were very lucky to not have been killed. When we returned home my son pulled the code "P2112" which is "Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed". There is a Technical Service Bullentin #TSB 16-0139 that was put out by Ford for their techs to diagnose and repair the issue. So they are aware this is an ongoing safety issue. NHTSA is aware this is an ongoing safety issue. The dealer wants $590 labor plus $258 for the Throttle Body to replace and diagnose the code we have already pulled and supplied them with the TSB bulletin. I wonder how many accidents and/or lives will it cost for the NHTSA and/or Ford to step up and recall these unsafe throttle bodies that are obviously defective.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-30
- VIN: 1FMJU1HTXGE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Sudden feel of a misfire putting truck into reverse, definitely caught my attention as vehicle has under 140k miles! Just had new Ford spark plugs and lifetime warrantied coil packs in the last 20 to 25k! it's had at least two if not three oil changes in the last 20k to 30k miles! Put vehicle into drive same felling of a misfire and doesn't take long it flashes the check engine light at me so I turn around to head back home and haven't really made it but around the corner and the car completely stalled out going by the neighbors house lost steering and brakes and noticed a very distinct smell of plastic/electrical burning! I pop the hood in total disgust and can't even see clearly enough to see the issue at the moment! A friend pulled in front my residence as I'm shaking my head and in tears! He points out a cracked and melted number one coil pack! Instantly replaced with nothing was wrong with the previous coil pack that nothing was wrong with but was unsure of the history! I now have a paperweight King Ranch Expedition! I'm not to familiar with this current what looks to fixing to be a recall anyway for what sound like the same overall issue as these 2020 and newer models that the fixing to hit! I have repaired my 02' Impala of a recall before I new it was a recall! Once I received the recall the issue of sudden loss of control of vehicle and engine shut down was already fixed by myself but out of curiosity I took the car in on a scheduled appointment to the GM Chevy dealer nearest me to fix the issue under recall that was already fixed! They placed plastic sleeves overs my keys and said done deal! I explained that that will not fix anything safely or permanently concerning these cars issues! Voiced my concern there at the dealership, with GM and this organization that I hope that no more loss of life would come from those! My current 2 recalls for my vehicle involved in my complaint today is a weeks if not months long wait to get vehicle back on one and no known

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-21
- VIN: 1FMJU1MT9GE
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The throttle body failed, and my car lost power as I was turning into traffic on the road outside of my subdivision. My car went from approximately 45-50 miles an hour to no acceleration. My car would only go forward at the speed at which it idles. It was very dangerous to me and to others because it was a sudden power failure. The problem was reproduced by the local Ford dealer. I don't know if the component has been inspected by anyone. The first time it happened, there was an orange wrench on my dash with "See Owner's Manual" under it. This happened at least three times before we took it to our local Ford dealer. The dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong with my car and that I should "drive it till it broke".

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-02
- VIN: 1FMJK2ATXGE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This is in reference to Safety Recall 22S56. The recall talks about the possibility of the vehicle catching fire. I received the recall over a year ago and have contacted the dealer several times and they keep saying that a replacement part is on backorder and there's no timeline for when it'll be available. Meanwhile, I feel like my vehicle could potentially catch fire at any time. Are they allowed an unlimited amount of time to resolve the issue? I'm wondering if there's any recourse for me to get it fixed. Also, what if the vehicle catches fire before they get around to fixing it? Are they responsible for replacing the vehicle?

I rented this car for a 1,500 mile round-trip from CA to WA on I-5. I was able to carry 1,300 lbs. of tile with no problem thanks to the fold-down seats. On the way back, I stuffed it to the gills with light cargo. The car had plenty of power and sure braking, making it easy to go up and down mountains. I averaged 19.4 MPG going up @ 70 MPH and 20 MPG going down @ 70 MPH (overall 19.6 MPG). If it weren't for 300 miles of mountain driving / Portland traffic each way, I would have easily been over 20 MPG. The car is easy to park and maneuver, and the Sync and Navigation systems are great. The seats are comfortable and the cabin is quiet, with just a bit of wind noise. The car also has good visibility. While it may not be as attractive as a Suburban, it is capable in every way. I can't comment on reliability other than the rear turn signal quitting, but the engine/transmission combo is super and the suspension is terrific - as smooth as a Cadillac.

I've only owned this vehicle for 3 days, but I'll rate it as I see it. At first glance, the new Sync 3 seems very easy to use compared to My Ford Touch. However, I'm disappointed with the navigation system. The music doesn't stop playing when navigation signals are given, which can be very disturbing and confusing if you're relying on the navigation. The dealer was only able to set the navigation voice to be louder than the music, but this gives a very muffled sound for the music while driving and using navigation. The only solution is to not listen to music if you need the navigation signal, which is very sad. With this issue, I had to give both navigation and entertainment a very low score. I actually prefer My Ford Touch. My second disappointment is that they list cross-traffic alert, but that is only for the back. There is no crash alert available for the front like in the Ford Edge (which I owned for almost 6 years). I gave the purchase price a low score because instead of purchasing a new vehicle like I expected, the vehicle had 488 miles on it, and the dealer did not give anything for the mileage usage. I could say it's my fault as I did not question the mileage at the time of purchase. Instead of ordering the vehicle, the dealer just called and said they found one with the specs I requested. So if this happens, make sure you ask for the mileage of the one they found. As far as cargo space goes, there is plenty, but there is really no place to store jumper cables, first aid kits, etc. I just had to put everything in a bag and let it sit in the cargo space. I hope this helps if you're looking to buy the new 2016 Ford Expedition in the Platinum series.

This vehicle provides a great ride with excellent cargo space and usable 3rd row seating. It also has an excellent turning radius, making it easy to park, and reasonable gas mileage.

Opting for a SUV means a large vehicle, but don't let that fool you. The 2015 Expedition is surprisingly nimble and quick, with plenty of power to spare - even when towing a trailer or boat.

I have been driving Ford products exclusively for over 60 years. However, my 2016 Expedition has been quite a disappointment. I have spent around $5500 in repairs out of pocket in just 30 months. Unfortunately, I have had issues with the engine light coming on and have had to pay for diagnostic tests twice to find the problem. Although the issue was emissions-related, I still had to pay for the repair. The same problem has occurred again and I am not sure if the mechanics know how to fix it. I am feeling quite frustrated and disappointed with the quality of Ford vehicles and the mechanics who have been unable to fix the issues. I am considering trying a GM vehicle now. I am currently having issues with the key fobs, which is just another disappointment. I doubt I will ever receive a reply from Ford Motor Company. Overall, this truck has been a big disappointment and I am quite dissatisfied with my experience.

I recently test drove and purchased a 2016 Expedition XLT, and my wife and I took a road trip from southern Illinois to Myrtle Beach. The Expedition was wonderful in terms of power, comfort, and drivability. However, upon returning home, I noticed white tape on all of the inside doors, which I assumed was from shipping. After removing the tape, I noticed significant wind noise coming from between the driver side front and back doors, which was very annoying. Unfortunately, I would not have purchased this $50+ Expedition if I had noticed the white tape beforehand. I have tried to get answers from Ford, but they have not responded. I am disappointed with this experience and may consider looking at other options in the future.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It seems like you have a preference for the Yukon Denali over the Expedition. While the Expedition may not have the same level of exterior and interior design as the Denali, it does have a unique feature that sets it apart from the competition - the IRS. We appreciate your feedback and hope you continue to enjoy your Denali!

I purchased the car used from a dealer with 35K miles. Unfortunately, at 77K miles, I experienced transmission and suspension issues. Despite the dealer suggesting a $10,000 repair, I decided to trade it in and purchase a German car instead. The German car offers superior technology, a better warranty, and comparable cargo space, while also providing a better ride and handling. I have no intention of purchasing an Expedition again.

Front seats are comfortable and there is not much to complain about. However, the middle seats with captains chairs are not very comfortable. The seats are too short and too shallow. Thankfully, there are awkward head pockets in the ceiling to prevent your scalp from grazing the roof. The third row bench is overall more comfortable than the captains chairs, but the headrests are not adjustable and your shoulders have to be pressed into the seat to use them. The coat hanger hooks cannot be folded in and can be dangerous if you hit a speed bump too fast. Perhaps the back seats are meant for children under 5 feet. The exterior and performance are fine.
