Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

This could have caused a serious MV accident if it had failed while driving. The vehicle gave no warning of this failure.

I contacted the dealership and they said bring it in. I could not get it in again as I was very busy. I asked them to make a note in my file of the immediate call/report of still a problem. I took the vehicle in this month (October 2024) for issue of no starting (fuel pump failure, another recall they are denying). They stated that the Drivers Side Airbag module was shorted or bad and my cost would be approximately $1,250. They stated it was not covered under any recall. I contacted Chevy corporate that offered to cover 30% only of this. I believe this should be covered in whole due to the failure to repair the first time and that is is a known safety issue. The vehicle has only 10,800 miles.

I bought this truck because it has the best design Chevy has ever come out with, along with the infamous 5.7 powerhouse. In my experience, this truck has been more reliable than my past two brand new trucks. It rides so well and I even have room for my family, despite it being a two-door. With a little elbow grease, you can even get into the back. If you're thinking of purchasing one of these, I think you'll be very pleased. I just hit 182,000 miles this morning and it's still going strong!

You're in for a treat with this vehicle! It offers an incredibly smooth ride that's hard to beat. Plus, it looks so sharp that you might hesitate to take it off-road, but even if you do, the ride remains smooth and enjoyable.

I was initially hesitant about purchasing a vehicle, but after some consideration, I came across a great deal on a 2007 SUV with only 60k miles, one owner, clean title, and all records available. I have been driving it for a few months now and it feels fantastic. The vehicle is very spacious and comfortable, making it feel like I'm driving a pontoon boat with a lazy boy chair. It handles very well in the city and is great on the road, while also being fuel-efficient. I have been diligent with maintenance and expect to get at least 100k more miles out of it. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and have not encountered any issues so far.

Vehicle year: 2004
I bought our 04' Chevy Tahoe brand new from the Chevy dealer in 2004 as our family car and it has been our daily driver ever since. It is the base model with cloth interior and had a sticker price of $38K at the time. Fast forward to 2015, we have driven over 233,000 miles on this same vehicle and it is still running like a champ with no mechanical issues whatsoever. We are truly grateful! The only minor issues we have had are the instrument cluster gauge going out at around 150K miles, which is typical with GM vehicles, and the A/C blower being replaced at around 180K miles. That's it. We have not had any engine or transmission problems of any kind. To be honest, we have never had the transmission service done on the vehicle like the dealer recommends, just routine oil changes about every 5K - 7K miles, sometimes even going as far as 10K - 12K miles before the next oil change. We just check the fluid levels (oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid) from time to time and that's all. Needless to say, I will be getting another Chevy Tahoe when the time comes. My goal is to get 500K miles out of this wonderful 04 Tahoe before that day comes. :)

Vehicle year: 1999
I purchased my vehicle used in 2014 with only 69,000 miles for $2,680.00. Although it was a risky move to buy a 15-year-old vehicle, I have good mechanical ability and decided to take the chance. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is not great, and I often joke that I'm supporting OPEC with every full tank. The towing package with 3.73 rear diff gearing doesn't help, and even on the freeway, I only get about 15 MPG. In Southern California, we have to drive at 80MPH to keep up with traffic, which doesn't help either. If you have the same vehicle, there are a few things you should do to keep it running smoothly. Firstly, replace the intake manifold gasket and coolant with the regular green prestone stuff. This will cost around $700 at the dealership, but it's worth it. Secondly, drain and replace the filter on the auto transmission fluid, and while you're at it, install the corvette servo and Transgo shift kit (4L60E-HD2). This will make your vehicle feel lighter on its wheels. Thirdly, check the high-pressure power steering hose, as it often goes bad. Fourthly, check the brakes and replace all worn-out parts. This vehicle has an underrated braking system, so it's important to keep it in top condition for a decent stopping distance. I also replaced the brake master cylinder with the NBS Tahoe (2001-2003) master cylinder, which helped a little, but caution is still needed when driving this heavy vehicle. Lastly, tune up by replacing the plugs, dist. rotor and cap, and belt. I don't see the need to replace the plug wires on tune-up. Use good oil for older high mileage vehicles, like Valvoline Maxlife. Other things that needed to be repaired on mine were the passenger door latch, which was bent and caused difficulty in opening the door. The rear passenger window cannot be controlled from the driver's controller. The radio light is currently off and has not been fixed yet. The vanity mirror light and cover on the sunshade are broken and have not been fixed yet. The top dashboard is cracked, which is a common issue with the low-quality plastic used by GM. The headlights sometimes dim, and the cause is unknown. Unfortunately, the drive shaft u-joint broke, which left me and my family stranded on the freeway. The repair and replacement cost for the damage to the drive shaft and transmission yoke was over $900. Despite these issues, I still love this truck. It sits high and provides excellent visibility from all angles, making it perfect for towing. Although it creaks and groans on rough surfaces and the dashboard rattles on unimproved roads, it's still a great vehicle.

I recently purchased a new 2022 Tahoe, but unfortunately, after just 3 weeks and 1300 miles, it wouldn't start and the electronics were acting erratically (lights flashing, windshield wipers operating on their own). I called Chevy roadside assistance, but unfortunately, they were not able to provide much help. I also reached out to my salesperson for assistance, but unfortunately, he did not call me back. After waiting for 8 hours, I decided to call for a tow myself and got it to the dealership. Although they are currently checking it out, they do not have a loaner available. It would have been better if they had anticipated this situation. Once the vehicle is sold, it seems like you are on your own.

I have driven my '15 LTZ 4x4 for just under 5000 miles and I am disappointed with the ride quality. This is my third full-size GM SUV in 10 years, and I have always enjoyed the adaptive suspensions of previous Tahoe/Yukon models. However, the LTZ magnetic suspension this year is not up to par. Despite upgrading to Michelin LTX tires, the ride quality is still unacceptably harsh. I hope GM takes note of this issue as I am considering trading in my car and exploring other options. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I love my Tahoe! It's such a great truck that I've decided to keep it even after having to replace the transmission multiple times. Just recently, it needed its fourth transmission, but I still think it's an awesome vehicle. Although there is a defect that causes these trucks to eat transmissions, GM unfortunately doesn't feel responsible for compensating owners for the fix. Despite this, the Tahoe is perfect for towing boats, trailers, or cars, and it can easily accommodate your family and all their luggage. Plus, it provides a smooth and safe ride. On average, I get about 17 mpg. Thanks for listening!

I have experienced several electrical issues with my vehicle, including the radio going out multiple times. After some investigation, I discovered that there is a recall for this issue. Additionally, the transmission can be jerky and it feels like the car might stall when coming to a stop. I also had to replace a headlight and the air conditioning system went out, causing water to drip heavily from the right gear shift when using it. I believe that the air filter is facing the right gear shift due to a factory defect. The top interior filters also fall out often, possibly due to improper fitting. I was informed that the battery for this large vehicle is only good for 3 years or 36,000 miles and cannot handle all of the Tahoe's electrical systems. I was also told that a software update was needed for the radio, as it can affect the back camera and ignition. Finally, the top right exterior fin became loose while driving on the freeway and had to be replaced. While there are several other issues I could mention, I believe that these are common problems that many people experience.

We purchased our brand new Tahoe for $70,000, thinking it was the cream of the crop with its 6.2 engine and 10-speed transmission. At first, we loved it and thought we could go fast in it. We bought it in May and enjoyed rolling down the windows and feeling the breeze. However, when June hit, it got hot in there and the A/C seemed to make it even hotter. After calling the dealer, we found out that they had forgotten to put refrigerant in it, but it was a simple fix. Things were going well until one day, the back door seal fell off. It was frustrating to find out that Chevrolet had forgotten the clips on the door seal. Additionally, two body bolts had worn holes in the carpet. Thankfully, the local dealer was able to fix these issues for us. After five months of no problems, we fell back in love with our $70,000 investment. Unfortunately, one day when I was backing out of the driveway and put it in drive, nothing happened. I calmly shifted to neutral and tried again, but it slammed into drive with a big thud, causing me to hit the steering wheel. I was worried that I was going crazy, but I gathered some witnesses to confirm that I wasn't. Although Chevrolet thought it never happened to them, it happened to me five plus times a week. Sadly, this will be my last Chevy product. I can buy the same quality for half the price from another manufacturer. If you have $70,000 to spend, the new Tahoe is still a great choice!
