Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Chevrolet Tahoe 2021
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • VIN: 1GNSKPKD8MR
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle has 10,800 miles. The vehicle repeatedly failed to start. Towed to GM dealership. They say the fuel pump has failed. They say it is not covered (beccause my VIN isn't within the recalls that already exist for this exact same problem). The cost is over $1,200. I contacted Chevy corporate and they offered to cover 30%. The dealership is still awaiting the part(s) with no provided delivery date. This could have caused a serious MV accident if it had failed while driving. The vehicle gave no warning of this failure.
Chevrolet Tahoe 2021
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-11
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • VIN: 1GNSKPKD8MR
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Took the vehicle in for Airbag System recall in 2022. They said they fixed it and that there was a broken wire. The very next day the warning light came on again like before. I contacted the dealership and they said bring it in. I could not get it in again as I was very busy. I asked them to make a note in my file of the immediate call/report of still a problem. I took the vehicle in this month (October 2024) for issue of no starting (fuel pump failure, another recall they are denying). They stated that the Drivers Side Airbag module was shorted or bad and my cost would be approximately $1,250. They stated it was not covered under any recall. I contacted Chevy corporate that offered to cover 30% only of this. I believe this should be covered in whole due to the failure to repair the first time and that is is a known safety issue. The vehicle has only 10,800 miles.

My wife and I researched and test drove several full size SUVs before concluding that the Tahoe was the best fit for us. Despite some initial issues with the radio freezing up during the test drive, we were assured by the dealer that using a factory iPhone cable would resolve the problem. However, after purchasing the vehicle, the issue persisted and we were informed that a software update was needed. Although the problem returned a few days later, the dealership was quick to diagnose the issue as a human interface controller board and informed us that the part was back ordered from Chevrolet. Despite some frustration with the situation, we appreciated the dealership's efforts to expedite the service request and fix the issue. Unfortunately, over the next two months, we experienced several other electrical issues with the vehicle. The car has been experiencing multiple electrical issues, including the headlights randomly switching to high beams, pedals not adjusting, and front and rear parking sensors falsely detecting obstacles. Despite communicating these issues to both the dealership and Chevrolet directly, the problems persisted. However, after waiting for two months, a controller board arrived from Chevy and the dealership was able to fix everything. Although there was a minor issue with the loaner car, the dealership assured me that everything was fixed and that the vehicle was 100% operational. Unfortunately, the parking sensors malfunctioned again on my drive home. We sent a video to the dealership to show the problem, and we are currently waiting to hear back from Chevy and the dealership. Despite these issues, I believe that the vehicle will be a great purchase once the bugs are worked out.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on your truck. Firstly, I think it's a great vehicle! However, I noticed that there is some wasted space that could be used for storage, such as the rear doors and third seating area. Additionally, I've had some trouble with the driver's door being out of alignment since day one, even though it's been fixed twice. On the highway, I've only been able to average 16.4 miles per gallon. Lastly, I've noticed a small amount of oil on my garage floor. I understand your frustration with the third row seat storage, as it can be difficult to move in and out. Overall, I think your truck is great, but I wanted to share my observations with you. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

I have been driving Tahoes or Suburbans since the mid 90's and always found them to be very comfortable and reliable with decent build quality. However, this 2007 Tahoe LTZ has been a disappointment. My wife and I have encountered a constant stream of problems, usually with the build quality. Here is a list of issues we have faced with this expensive vehicle that has less than 100k miles: the fake chrome is peeling off of the door handles, power fold-in mirrors stopped working and now the passenger side outside mirror is loose and will not stay set for proper view, the button to release the rear window latch keeps falling out, the dash is cracked in 4 places and rattles (we park it inside the garage), the navigation cannot even find my house, the + and - paint on the dial for the heat/AC fan speed has completely come off, black paint on the steering wheel near controls is coming off, the DVD player only plays when it wants to, the power rear hatch pops and jerks when raising, the tire air pressure sensors will not stay fixed and this causes a warning light to stay on (we have had them replaced twice at almost $100 per wheel in the last 10,000 miles), the remote start stopped working, and last but not least, the engine is an oil burner. This Tahoe seems to be falling apart! Luckily, we did not trade in our 2003 Tahoe with 273,000 miles that has never had ANY issues at all (absolutely zero). My wife drives the '03 almost always because it's just a much better vehicle than this '07. Also, I have a 2003 Avalanche with 158,000 miles that is a great truck. What happened? Why did GM ruin these vehicles after 2006? I'm looking to sell or trade this Tahoe. It makes me sick that I spent so much money for this truck thinking I would have a vehicle that would last us for years and many miles, and now we will probably take a huge financial loss just to get rid of it. I'm probably going with a Nissan Armada or Toyota Sequoia, or maybe a Ford Expedition.I hope to make a wiser choice in the future when paying for my vehicles. Unfortunately, my experience with the Tahoe has been quite unpleasant. Since my original review, I have encountered several issues such as the power lift-gate not working, interior lights not functioning when opening the passenger side doors, and the brake lights only working part-time. Despite checking the bulbs and sockets, the issue persisted and even led to being pulled over by the police. Additionally, there was a loud roaring sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. However, I am happy to report that I have since traded in the Tahoe for a Ford Expedition Limited, which we absolutely love. The Expedition has power flat folding 3rd row seats, making it a great choice for our needs. Goodbye Chevy, hello Ford!

The driver's seat is extremely uncomfortable. During the first week of owning the truck and driving it in traffic, I noticed that the side seat frame rails protrude up and can be felt shallowly under the seat cushion. I expressed my concerns to the dealership, but was told that it was normal. I also reached out to GM, but unfortunately did not receive a reply. In addition to the uncomfortable seats, I had to replace the motor mounts at around 5k miles to stop the truck from vibrating at idle. Currently, the transmission is also starting to shift roughly. As someone who has owned three full size GM SUVs, I am disappointed to say that this one is the worst in terms of physical comfort and cargo room.

The vehicle would be great except that the ABS system went out right at 37k, just out of warranty. I know six other people this has happened to, and I think they should recall it. Unfortunately, it cost $1000.00 to repair. If it wasn't for the fact that this problem has happened to six other people, I would think it was just bad luck on my part.

I upgraded to the Tahoe LTZ after my previous purchase, which unfortunately got totaled. The additional safety features, such as the blind spot indicator lights on the side mirrors, have been incredibly helpful during my travels. The rear parking assist has also made parking much easier. I am particularly impressed with the AC option for the front seats. The tilt and telescoping feature is also a great addition, especially since we needed the extra space to accommodate our growing basketball player. Overall, I am confident that this upgrade was the right choice for me.

I bought my truck fully loaded for $50K. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing vibration issues since day one. I previously owned two Yukons and decided to switch things up by purchasing a Tahoe. The only difference was that this truck had 20

Congratulations on your new 2010 Tahoe! It's great to hear that you are enjoying your purchase and that it has exceeded your expectations. The Tahoe definitely has a solid and well-built feel, both inside and out, and it's great that you are enjoying the little electronic additions like the Bluetooth phone link, touchscreen nav, and USB port. While it may be inconvenient to not have fold away rear seats, I'm sure you'll quickly get used to removing them to haul extra stuff. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us and we hope that your Tahoe continues to impress you. We look forward to hearing about your experience with its reliability in the future.

This is my second Tahoe purchased new and it does exactly what I need it to do. I have had to use the stability control and it does work. The LT w/ autoride is great. This SUV is now 5 years old and everything still works. It may not get 25+ mpg but look at the thing. It's a big SUV with a big engine. The transmission seems to know exactly when to shift and is holding up well with maintenance. I still love it.
