1996 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe has several common problems reported by owners. One of the most common issues is the 4WD Transfer Case Position Sensor/Selector Switch failure, which has affected more than a dozen Tahoes over the years.

Another frequently reported problem is the cracked dashboard, which is mostly a cosmetic issue but can be frustrating for the owner. This problem has been reported by many Tahoe owners, and despite being a cosmetic issue, it remains a significant concern due to its prevalence.

Low oil pressure is another reliability issue with the 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe. Many drivers have reported decreased engine performance and a check engine light due to low oil pressure. This problem can lead to severe engine damage if not addressed promptly, and it is essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue.

The A/C system is another area where the 1996 Tahoe has shown some problems. The A/C system can stop working due to several reasons, such as refrigerant leaks, electrical issues, and a faulty A/C compressor. The typical repair job to fix this problem is to replace the broken parts, such as the compressor or condenser.

These are some of the most common problems reported by 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe owners. It is essential to be aware of these issues when purchasing a used Tahoe and to have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic before making a purchase. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems from occurring or becoming more severe.

What is the most common problem with the Chevy Tahoe?

Chevy Tahoes have issues with their lifters getting stuck or locked in place within newer models equipped with 5.3L L84 V-8 and 6.2L L87 V-8 EcoTec3 engines. An improperly functioning lifter triggers the check engine light and causes: Ticking and banging noises. Misfires.

What year Tahoes have bad transmissions?

Transmission Problems

Early models, particularly around 2002-2004 and 2007-2009, have been reported to have transmission issues.

What year Tahoe is the most reliable?

CarComplaints.com awarded the 2009 Tahoe the “Awesome” seal of approval for its top-notch reliability. Both 2010 and 2011 Tahoe SUVs also received the “Awesome” badge of approval from CarComplaints. Although they also had the cracked dashboard issue from the 2007 model, they're not widespread and hardly a big deal.

Is the Chevy Tahoe a reliable vehicle?

The 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe has a predicted reliability score of 81 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Are old Chevy Tahoes reliable?

Similarly, J.D. Power rated older 2013 and 2014 Tahoe models as a 5 out of 5, while 2016 through 2019 models received a 4.5 out of 5. What stands out about the Chevy Tahoe is its durability. Many owners and professionals say these vehicles can last up to 300,000 miles, provided they are properly maintained.

What were the best years for Chevy Tahoe?

2010-2014. These four years within the third generation are noted as having fewer problems and easily fixable issues. The 2014 Chevy Tahoe in particular, is known for being a smooth ride with a reliable engine and roomy interior. In 2017, J.D. Power cited it as one of the best large SUVs.

Are Tahoes expensive to fix?

The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Chevrolet Tahoe is $744, compared to an average of $573 for midsize SUVs and $652 for all vehicle models.

What are common Tahoe transmission problems?

One of the more common Chevy Tahoe transmission problems is the loss of 3rd and/or 4th gears. This occurs because the clutch discs inside the 4L60E 3-4 clutch pack have a tendency to wear out and fail prematurely.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-30
  • VIN: 3GNEK18R0TG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: MY '96 CHEVROLET TAHOE 2-DOOR SUFFERED COMPLETE BRAKE SYSTEM LOSS WHEN A BRAKE LINE BURST WHILE IN-SERVICE. THE TAHOE, USED PRIMARILY IN ILLINOIS IN THE WINTER, SUFFERED THE FAILURE IN MAY OF 2008 WITH ABOUT 102,000 MILES ACCUMULATED AND WITH NO WITH NO PRIOR INDICATIONS OF A PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE COMPLETE FAILURE. THE BRAKE LINE SIMPLYBURST/ FAILED COMPLETELY WHEN THE LINE (MOUNTED TO THE FIREWALL BELOW THE RADIATOR) COMPLETELY FAILED, LEAVING BLOWN OUT GAP ABOUT AN INCHLONG IN THE LINE. THE TRUCK WAS SLOWING TO A STOP SIGN WHEN THEN LINE FAILED AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR, SO THERE WAS NO COLLATERAL DAMAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED IMMEDIATELY TO A REPAIR SHOP FOR ESTIMATION AND REPAIRS (NOT A CHEVY GARAGE). THESE REPAIRS REQUIRED COMPLETE VEHICLE BRAKE LINE REPLACEMENT (EXCEPT TO THE FRONT ANT-LOCK UNIT) AND COMPLETE SYSTEM COMPONENT REPLACEMENT (EXCEPT FOR THE MASTER CYLINDER). I THOUGHT THE FAILURE WAS RANDOM UNTIL I RECENTLY SAW AN ARTICLE ON THE TOPIC IN PRINT BY JERRY HIRSCH, STAFF WRITERFOR THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, BUSINESS SECTION WHERE OTHER SIMILAR FAILURES ON SIMILAR MODELS WERE NOTED. THE REPAIRS COST CLOSE TO $2,000 AND, IF THERE ARE OTHER CAMPAIGNS ON THIS MODEL, I WOULD LIKE TO RESEARCH THEM TO DETERMINE IF POOR DESIGN BY GENERAL MOTORS/CHEVROLET DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE REPAIRS AND HOW TO GO ABOUT ADDING MY VEHICLE TO THAT CAMPAIGN. I HAVE KEPT THE VEHICLE REGISTERED IN MY NAME AND CURRENTLY OWN A 2004 CHEVROLET, SO MY CONTACT INFORMATION WOULD HAVE BEEN ON-FILE WITH GM SUCH THAT PROPER NOTIFICATIONS COULD HAVE BEEN MADE. I HAD NO IDEA THAT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE WAS PART OF GMS FAULTY DESIGN HISTORY OR THAT ANY CAMPAIGN WAS UNDERWAY PERTAINING TO BRAKE LINE FAILURES UNTIL I SAW THE ARTICLE PRINTED BY MRJERRY HIRSCH AS NOTE D ABOVE. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-04-02
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I PURCHASED 5 TOYO PROXIES 285/60/18 AND HAVE HAD A BLOW OUT ON THE SIDE WALL OF TWO WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WITH PREMATURE CRACKING ON ALL OF THE TIRES. THE FIRST TIRE THAT BLEW OUT I THOUGHT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT. BUT AFTER PURCHASING THE 5TH TIRE AND THEN HAVING A BLOW OUT ON 4/2/2008, WITHIN 6 MOS OF THEM, WHERE THE SIDEWALL WAS AFFECTED, I DECIDED TO LOOK ONLINE AND FOUND WHERE THE PROXIES WERE HAVING ISSUES WITH OTHER CONSUMERS WITH BLOWING OUT THE SIDEWALLS. CO WANTED A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE BUSINESS THAT DEALS WITH THEIR PRODUCT AND HAVE THEM INSPECTED. THEY WERE INSPECTED AND SHOWED THE TIRE DEPTH, PREMATURE CRACKING, ETC. AFTER HAVING THEM INSPECTED, BUSINESS CONDEMNED THE TIRES TIRE MANF THEN DECIDED THAT THEY HAD TO HAVE THE TIRES BACK BEFORE THEY WOULD ISSUE ANY WARRANTY OR PRORATING ON THEM. DID SAY THAT THEY WOULD ISSUE A PRORATE OF 78% ON EACH TIRE, BUT I HAD TO SEND THE TIRES TO THEM VIA UPS WHICH THEY WOULD PICK UP THE COST OF HAVING THE TIRES SHIPPED UP TO THEM. AS I EXPLAINED I HAD NO PROBLEM SENDING THE TIRES AS IN GOOD CONSCIENCE, I COULD NOT SALE THESE TIRES TO ANYONE ELSE AS BEING IN THIS FIELD FOR 13 YEARS AND KNOWING THE SAFETY ISSUES REGARDING TIRES HAVING THESE ISSUES, I DID NOT FEEL THAT THEY WERE SAFE FOR ANYONE TO HAVE ON THEIR VEHICLES. UPS PICKED UP THE TIRES AND AFTER A FEW PHONE CALLS I FINALLY RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TIRE CO STATING THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING TO WARRANTY OR PRORATE THE TIRE AS THEY DID NOT SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM. I TRAVEL THE INTERSTATE QUITE A BIT AND AFTER HAVING TWO OF THE SIDEWALLS BLOW OUT AS THEY DID I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT I DIDN'T CAUSE A SEVERE ACCIDENT AND I WOULD CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SAFETY HAZARD FOR INTERSTATE TRAVELERS AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED. THIS IS SOMETHING AS A CONSUMER, THAT I FEEL SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO MORE CLOSELY AS IT COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR

Negative 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Keshaun Lindgren 2024-08-19

Our car still looks great on the outside, even though it's 9 years old. However, we've been experiencing some issues with the interior. The rattling noises inside are quite bothersome and the plastic materials used seem to be of low quality. We're also not satisfied with the sound system, as it sounds like all of the speakers are blown. Additionally, we've had some trouble with the rearview mirror, as it keeps falling off of the windshield. Have any of you experienced similar issues?

My wife and I purchased this vehicle in 2000 with 60K miles on it. She absolutely adores it, and it has become a regular at our local Chevy garage. Over the years, we have had to replace a few parts, including the fuel pump at 90K, the alternator at 95K, and the transmission at 100K (which seems to be a common issue among other '96 models). We also upgraded the transfer case solenoid to the new and improved version and have replaced the battery twice. While it does have a tendency to consume coolant, I simply top it off about once a month. Currently, there is a minor leak from the rear seal of the transfer case, which I plan to fix as soon as the snow stops. Additionally, there is some lifter rattle and high oil pressure readings when first started, and the air conditioning stopped working last year. However, as the old juice ad goes, I never have to say, 'Wow, I wish I had a V8,' because when the 350 engine is running, it truly rocks!

Have had to replace parts of the transmission three different times in the last two years. Head gasket replaced twice in same time. Timing chain replaced. EGR valve gone bad twice, and replaced 3 of 4 o2 sensors and still have trouble. Other than that, we like our Tahoe.

I'm so glad I got this truck! The Tahoe has always been a dream of mine, and it definitely lives up to my expectations. The spacious interior and powerful engine are amazing, and it's so convenient that parts are easy to find. I especially love the underhood reel light and storage box - such nifty features! Even though gas prices can be high, I never complain because this truck is worth every penny. The gas mileage is actually pretty good for a full-size truck. Whenever my friends and I go out, we always take 'the bus' because everything and everyone fits in it. It's perfect for driving around town with its excellent turning radius and sight lines, and it's a beast on the highway. Driving this 5k pound rig is so much fun, it's almost scary!

I have owned this vehicle for 2 years and it has been a reliable SUV, with the exception of corrosion on the + battery cable. However, recently it has developed a 'whine' that seems to be coming from the engine compartment. Despite this, I am confident in the vehicle's performance and am hopeful for another 60k miles of trouble-free driving. While I have come across other vehicles that I would like to own, I cannot justify letting go of such a dependable SUV.

Hey there! I just wanted to chime in and say that this was actually my first car too! As a typical high schooler, I put this car through the wringer, but now that I'm older, I've found it to be super reliable with very few problems. While I will say that GM doesn't always build the best drive trains, the rest of the car more than makes up for it. It handles like a dream on the road and, unlike most SUVs, has minimal body roll. Plus, it can tow a lot and still remain stable. If you're into off-roading, I highly recommend the Z71 editions - they've got great ground clearance and skid-plates to help you out. I've taken mine to Moab many times and it's always performed like a champ. All in all, these cars just keep going and going as long as you take care of them. I've got 150K on mine and it's still running strong!

Congratulations on your new Tahoe! It's always exciting when luck is on your side, and it sounds like you found a great deal with only 36,000 actual miles. So far, it seems like you've had a very good and pleasant experience with it. The mileage of about 17mpg is pretty good too. Although you did experience a problem with a miss, it's great that the dealer was able to find and fix the issue. Now that it's running fine, it must be a joy to drive!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2 door Tahoe LT that I bought used. It's been 6 months now and I have to say, I absolutely love it! Of course, like any car, it needed some repairs and maintenance in the first couple of months which cost me around 2K, but since then, it's been smooth sailing (fingers crossed!). I'm a big fan of Chevy and I truly believe that this car is going to be a classic monster truck one day. Thanks for listening!
