The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The Chevrolet Tahoe, a full-size SUV built for hauling large loads and standing the test of time, has been in production since the early '90s. Despite its popularity, the Tahoe does come with certain problems that potential buyers should be aware of.

One common issue with the Tahoe is the Service 4WD message, which has affected more than a dozen Tahoes over the years. The main culprit is the faulty selector switch or transfer case encoder sensor, causing the message to appear. This issue can be frustrating for drivers, as it may require replacing the faulty parts like the compressor or condenser.

Another common problem with the Tahoe is the cracked dashboard, which is one of the most complained-about issues. This problem is mostly cosmetic, but it can be an aggravating issue nonetheless, especially when GM won't fix it.

Low oil pressure is another severe reliability issue with the Tahoe. Many drivers have reported a decrease in engine performance and the illuminating check engine light due to low oil pressure.

The Tahoe's A/C system can also fail, causing discomfort for drivers and passengers, especially on hot days. The A/C system can fail due to a refrigerant leak, electrical issues, or a faulty A/C compressor.

The 2000 to 2006 Chevy Tahoe also has high mileage issues that buyers should be aware of. These issues include electrical problems, fluid leaks, serpentine belt and tensioner issues, spark plug and wire problems, wiper blade issues, suspension problems, brake problems, CV axle and boot issues, and leaks

In conclusion, while the Chevrolet Tahoe is a reliable full-size SUV, it does come with certain problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These issues include the Service 4WD message, cracked dashboard, low oil pressure, and A/C system failure, as well as high mileage issues for the 2000 to 2006 models. Proper maintenance and regular inspections can help prevent these issues and ensure the Tahoe's longevity and reliability.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-07-06
  • VIN: 1GNEK13R8YR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: HELLO I AM EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SYMPTOMS DESCRIBED IN GM RECALL 05068C "THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE A CONDITION PERMITTING CORROSION TO OCCUR BETWEEN THE FRONT HUB/BEARING ASSEMBLY AND THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR. IF THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF GREATER THAN 6 KM/H (3.7 MPH) BUT LESS THAN 16 KM/H (10 MPH), THE CORROSION MAY CAUSE AN UNWANTED ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) ACTIVATION. IF THIS CONDITION OCCURRED WHERE STOPPING DISTANCE IS LIMITED, A CRASH COULD OCCUR. " HOWEVER, MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE BREAKPOINTS, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A 2000 CHEVROLET TAHOE. I CAN DEMONSTRATE THAT THIS IS THE PROBLEM IN TWO WAYS, FIRST BY REPRODUCING WITH A SCAN TOOL THAT SHOWS UNEXPECTED ABS ACTIVATION DURING STOPPING AT THIS LOW SPEED, AND SECOND AFTER PULLING THE ABS FUSE THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT HAPPEN. THIS CLEARLY POINTS TO THE ABS ISSUE MENTIONED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE CONTACTED TWO LOCAL DEALERSHIPS, AND AFTER I ASKED ABOUT RECALLS THEY SAID MY VIN WAS INVALID. THEN I CONTACTED THE CHEVY CONTACT CENTER AND THEY SAID THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE. SO NOW WHAT - SHOULD I JUST REPLACE THE ABS SENSORS AND MOVE ON, OR IS THERE ANY CHANCE OF GETTING THIS ACKNOWLEDGED BY GM AS PART OF THE RECALL?

Negative 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Houston Gerlach 2024-11-24

I purchased a 2000 Tahoe brand new with the intention of keeping it for 10 years. However, it has been consuming a quart of oil every oil change and now requires a quart every couple of months. This is a common issue with GM vehicles, but I am confident that with proper maintenance and care, it will continue to serve me well.

  2. Edgardo Pfeffer 2024-09-16

I had a few issues with my vehicle, including the transmission going out at 70000 miles and the ABS system failing at 64000 miles. Despite taking it to the dealership multiple times to complain about the ABS braking problem, it was never duplicated by a service technician and therefore was never fixed. Unfortunately, the problem was only identified after the warranty had expired. I ended up replacing the ABS system, rotors, brake pads, and emergency brake pad at a cost of $1300.00, which was much more affordable than the dealership's quote of over $2500.00. While I had a negative experience with this vehicle, I understand that every car has its own unique issues. However, I personally would not recommend this particular model and will likely not purchase another Chevy product in the future.

It's been 3 1/2 years since my wife and I bought this Tahoe. Although it is quite an improvement from the 1995 Tahoe LT we owned, we still have some issues with this one. After owning a 1995 and 2000 Tahoe, it made me wonder if sticking with Chevy was the right choice.

  4. Dagmar Raynor 2024-06-20

I purchased this vehicle 18 months ago with 29,000 miles on it. Luckily, it was still under the manufacturer's warranty, and I was able to buy an extended warranty for $1200. Recently, I had to use the extended warranty twice in the past three weeks. The first time was for the Electronic Brake Control Module (ABS computer), which cost $950. The second time was for another computer problem with the ignition system, which cost $450. Despite these issues, I am very satisfied with the vehicle. We use it to tow our camper, and it performs exceptionally well. However, I am grateful that we invested in the extended warranty.

This vehicle has been giving us some trouble lately. The windows, lumbar support, and clock seem to have a mind of their own. Although we don't drive it often due to its unreliability, we're making the most of our lease. The dealership has been helpful with repairs, but now that our 3 year warranty has expired, we're taking care of the same issues ourselves. It's interesting to observe how many new Tahoes have light bulbs burned out while driving down the highway. Perhaps Chevy could improve the quality of their vehicles.

Positive 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Marshall Kling 2025-02-22

I purchased my Tahoe brand new and have driven almost every one of the 300k miles on the odometer myself. It's difficult to rate the 'electronics' or 'active safety' for its day, but the electronics were good. Let's be real, in 2000, there was no Bluetooth, no phone connectivity, and no USB ports. Blind spot monitoring was called a mirror and looking over your shoulder. Despite this, I have driven 300k miles without hitting anyone! The car has an AM/FM CD and TAPE DECK. Although I love HD radio, Bluetooth, and XM, the car keeps running. I have taken this vehicle through mud up to its axles, through snow up to its hood, and through rain so hard that I couldn't see the hood - and it kept going. Before getting this car, I would trade about every other year. However, this one is 18 years old and I still love it. As of late, I have had a couple of repairs, including an alternator at 290k and a transfer case replacement at 275k. Otherwise, it's just been tires, brakes, and shocks one time. This is an amazing vehicle. My final assembly was in Janesville, WI, and they must have had a great crew working the day my Tahoe came off the line. UPDATE as of 2/2018 - Literally 2 hours after I wrote this review, my transmission went out. It was a great run for 17 years and 300k miles. If new Tahoes were affordable to me, I would get another one today.

When I was shopping around for a new car, I had initially decided on an Expedition. However, I decided to try out the Tahoe and was pleasantly surprised by the difference in ride and power. The interior seats are incredibly soft and comfortable, and I love all of the gadgets that come with it. As someone who tows a trailer regularly (2-3 times a week), I was amazed at how well the 'tow/haul' mode worked. It changes the shift points to allow the vehicle to act like it does when it's unloaded, which is incredibly helpful. Additionally, the autoride feature is fantastic - it levels out the vehicle suspension when it's under load. Overall, I've found that the gas mileage is much better than the Ford.

  3. Chelsey Abshire 2025-01-28

I love driving this horse. It's a comfortable cruising truck as well as a get-up-and-go truck. The V8 kicks in smoothly and the fuel mileage is not bad. We have added a few features along with the VCR. All the comforts of home are included, with the exception of a bathroom. Chevy builds them tough, however, they also understand that women appreciate the comfort factors offered in the Tahoe.

  4. Filiberto Bradtke 2025-01-27

Your SUV has been a reliable companion for many miles! With almost 160,000 miles on it, it's understandable that you may be considering a replacement, but it's great to hear that it's still running so well. You've clearly taken great care of it, going to AMSOIL lube in the tranny and crankcase shortly after purchasing it at 50K miles. It's impressive that it still burns no oil and gets almost 20 mpg on the highway! As someone who has owned many cars in your lifetime, it's wonderful to hear that this one has been one of the best. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  5. Doris Stokes 2024-11-03

I purchased my Tahoe used and have had a wonderful experience driving it. It is completely trustworthy and comfortable for a family with kids and dogs. Even with high mileage, I never worry about taking my 2 year old out in the elements. I just know this truck will get us to our destination. This is my second Tahoe and I plan to keep buying them because of the high quality and good looks. I just love it!
