2015 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The 2015 Chevy Tahoe has been plagued with a number of issues, as reported by its owners. One of the most significant problems is the brake vacuum pump failure, which has led to an investigation by the NHTSA. The brake assist vacuum pump, driven by an accessory belt on the engine, is responsible for generating vacuum to aid in braking. However, its ability to generate vacuum may deteriorate over time, leading to reduced braking power and longer stopping distances. This issue has been linked to the K2XX platform used in 2014-2016 trucks and SUVs, including the Silverado, Sierra, Suburban, Yukon, Tahoe, and Escalade.

Another major concern with the 2015 Chevy Tahoe is the electrical system, which has been the subject of many complaints. Issues include a total loss of power while going through an intersection and an air conditioning system that only blows hot air. In some cases, the dealership acknowledged that the air conditioning system was prone to leaking, but the repair was not covered under warranty.

Steering problems have also been reported, with some drivers experiencing a total loss of power steering while in traffic. Others have noticed clicking and loud popping sounds when turning, as well as difficulty steering at lower speeds.

Some of these problems have been addressed through recalls. For instance, a recall was issued for over one million vehicles, including the Chevy Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, Sierra, Yukon, and Escalade, to update the EPS module software due to a temporary loss of electric power steering.

In addition to these issues, there have been reports of transmission oil leaks that could lead to fires if the transmission oil cooler line isn't properly secured. This issue affected nearly half a million vehicles and required inspecting the oil cooler line and repairing it if necessary.

Lastly, there have been instances where GM accidentally installed the wrong seat belt pretensioner cable assemblies in vehicles during previous recalls, potentially putting owners at risk.

In summary, the 2015 Chevy Tahoe has faced a variety of problems, ranging from brake vacuum pump failure to electrical system issues and steering problems. While some of these issues have been addressed through recalls, others remain a concern for owners.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
  • VIN: 1GNSKCKC9FR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Recently I've noticed that when I try to accelerate or take off from stop it does not pick up speed as use to. My engine rpms rise but speed is getting less and less. I've also noticed my transmission temperature is staying between 190-200 degrees which gm has already had recalls over pertaining to this style transmission having issues due to high heat. Vehicle has always had maintenance kept up with and never abused. Have taken to local shop since warranty ran out several times for inspection of transmission well my complaints in regards and have fluid done. Recently I've noticed fluid is needing to be replaced more frequently due to losing viscosity from overheating and being burnt, has the familiar and similar smell of toast being burnt. This is a 2016 Tahoe ltz w just over 200k, yes in some ways a lot but considering the cost of vehicle new/age/synthetic fluids and everything it seems to me the transmission should last longer especially considering it's been maintained. These new vehicles are outrageous and the transmissions are very expensive as well, considering these same transmissions have had recalls from GM I'm a little aggravated and frustrated on how some can and can't. I'm familiar and aware they say it's per manufacturing plant and particular models but confused as to how if the transmission that has had recalls for overheating doesn't comply to all the transmissions that are same type, I think it's bogus n a way not to be responsible for accepting failures n having to replace all parts so gm says it only happened here n with these parts. I guarantee you if someone would take a look at gm shipping and papers they would see it. If a 2016 4l60e had problems it's more than likely all of them in that year had all same parts so therefore all acceptable to failure, its not like transmission maker chose different parts to send to different plants or this get that no thats just b.s. so there not responsible for all of them so they pick plant with most failures

While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. Negative 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Demond Rath 2025-05-19

I purchased my LS 2015 Tahoe brand new in September 2015 with the expectation of feeling confident and safe on the roads of Dallas, TX. Initially, I was pleased with the SUV's performance during the first 3K miles. However, after a couple of weeks, I noticed a rattling sound coming from the driver's door. I took it back to Reliable Chevrolet in Richardson, TX, and they fixed it on the same day. Although I was disappointed that such an expensive SUV had this issue, I appreciated the prompt service. As I approached 3K-4K miles, I began to notice a metallic 'clunk' sound intermittently when I stopped and started at stop signs. Additionally, the SUV started to shift oddly and, at times, slip into 'neutral' after accelerating at stoplights. This caused the Tahoe to lose acceleration, and the RPM would go to 3.5-4K, almost causing me to get hit from behind a few times. I brought the SUV in for the dealer to check it out and have the oil changed around 4.5K miles. However, my dealer service advisor told me that they found nothing wrong with the Tahoe and that there was no code. After a few days, I had a close call with my family in the SUV, and I took it back to the dealer. On a downhill street, I felt the transmission shift somewhat weirdly at a stoplight. When the light turned green, I pressed the gas pedal lightly, but the engine revved up, and the RPM went up to about 4-5K, but the Tahoe didn't move. Fortunately, no one hit me from behind. I had to shift it to park and then shift it back past DRIVE to M1 to get the Tahoe to move. When I tried to back it into my garage, it didn't catch a reverse gear to backup, and I had to give it some gas, causing it to abruptly jerk back and almost slam into my garage. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the LS 2015 Tahoe's spaciousness and towing capabilities.Driving the Tahoe has been a scary and upsetting experience for me. However, I took it back to my dealer the next day to have it inspected and fixed. The dealer was kind enough to give me a Traverse for a loaner and kept the Tahoe with them for almost two weeks. They replaced the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, reverse, and the input rod, which was broken. Although I am not a transmission engineer, I believe that replacing four gears and reverse out of a six-gear transmission seems excessive. They should have replaced the whole transmission. Unfortunately, they still don't know what caused the transmission to wreck all of those gears and clutch. I am concerned about the safety of driving my SUV, and I hope GM addresses this issue soon. I am sharing my experience with the readers of this website to help potential buyers make an informed decision. I will update this post as I work through GM warranty, reporting the good, bad, and ugly. Update March 14, 2016: The dealer service department finally acknowledged that there was something wrong with the powertrain or transmission. I learned that GM warranty controls how the dealer repairs the SUV by only authorizing certain fixes. When the repair was completed (or attempted), the service advisor at the dealership informed me that they had to replace gears 3, 4, 5, 6, and reverse, some clutches, and an input rod on the transmission. They considered it fixed and returned the SUV to me. However, within a couple of days of driving it, the same issues resurfaced. The SUV would slip into neutral and fail to shift out of first, second, or third gear, feeling stuck in between gears at times. After finally getting in touch with the GM warranty person I was working with, she advised me to take it back to the dealer for further inspection. I followed her instructions and left my SUV with the dealer for a couple of days. They called me back to say that they could not find any codes or problems. I took the SUV back and drove it to Houston, TX from Dallas, TX on March 4, 2016 for vacation. Unfortunately, the SUV slipped into neutral during the drive down and did not move forward or reverse when I tried to park it at a hotel parking lot. I had to let off the gas pedal each time and wait for a gear to catch. I have had problems with it every time I drive it.

I wanted to share my experience with the wind deflector on my LTZ. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it catching on the tires and causing damage to both the deflector and front fender. The cost to replace both items was quite high at $1400.00. I've had this happen twice in the past 6 months, and while I've brought it to the attention of a GM representative, they were unable to offer a solution that wouldn't void my warranty. While I understand that this may be a common issue with smaller cars, I was surprised to see it happen with a larger SUV like mine. I wish I had known about this issue before purchasing my vehicle, as I may have chosen a different model. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience.

  3. Orville Wolff 2025-04-17

The vehicle has several issues with throttle response, body moldings, back hatch door and window leaks, back wiper functionality, air conditioning, high gear shifting, cabin buffering, radio, hood flutter, and cargo floor design. These issues have been reported by multiple owners and have not been resolved despite multiple shop visits. As a result, I have lost confidence in GM and will not be purchasing their products in the future.

  4. Sherman Walsh 2025-04-17

I came across some review articles on Google where users were complaining about vibration and A/C issues. Unfortunately, I have had to spend over $6k on repairs for my vehicle, even though I have owned it for less than a year. It's disappointing to see that there are no GM recalls for the poor workmanship of these vehicles. I have previously owned Tahoes from 2004 and 2008 and never experienced any issues like the ones I am facing now. I would advise doing your homework before making a purchase.

  5. Candido Johnson 2025-03-17

This is the first Chevy I have owned. At 46, I have owned numerous Fords, but my wife loved the look of the Tahoe so we decided to take a chance. Unfortunately, the AC stopped working just 4 months after I bought it, right after the factory warranty had expired. It seems to be a common problem and the repair costs are very high. I'm feeling a bit disappointed and wondering if I should have stayed loyal to Ford.

Positive 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Fritz Davis 2025-05-20

I've been the proud owner of my Chevy Tahoe LT 4x4 for 15 months now, and have already driven it for about 20k miles. I must say, it's an amazing vehicle! Despite owning two other high-end imported cars, both with window stickers over $100k, I still prefer to drive my Tahoe. It's incredibly quiet, comfortable, and a joy to drive. I've driven it in all kinds of conditions, and it has never felt out of place. I even tow my 6,500 boat regularly with it. The only downside I've found is that for off-road driving, I need to remove the front lower air dam to improve the ground clearance, but it's a minor issue as it comes off pretty easily. In terms of fuel efficiency, I get around 21mpg on the highway and 15mpg in the city, which is slightly different from the EPA numbers. However, I usually beat the EPA numbers in my other cars too.

  2. Alexandre Streich 2025-05-10

We have owned the Tahoe for four years and have generally loved this rugged and roomy vehicle. All the features and performance are as expected, but there is one issue that stands out. The engine comes with 'cylinder disabling technology', which means that sometimes the V8 will shut off four of its cylinders and downgrade to a V4 at low speeds and while driving economically. This is a great feature for fuel economy, but it has an unintended consequence of higher than normal oil consumption. After about two years of testing, we have found that these big Tahoe's with the V4/V8 technology will consume about a quart of oil every 1300-1500 miles. This means that you won't make it a full 5000 miles between oil changes without the low oil alerts coming on, and you will need to supplement the oil level with 2 to 3 quarts before you get to your regular scheduled oil change. Although I don't mind putting in a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so, my wife is almost foaming at the mouth about the issue.

  3. Quinn Emard 2025-04-14

After owning 6 Mercedes, 1 Volvo, 1 Toyota, and 1 BMW, I decided to try American-made vehicles due to the constant insane maintenance costs. I walked into the Chevy dealer with low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised by the new 2015 Tahoe. Now with 32K miles on the odometer, I can confidently say that it is the best built, most comfortable, and nicest riding car/truck I've ever owned. The ergonomics are excellent, and the stereo, GPS, rear camera, etc. are great. I get 24-25mpg on the highway and 21-22mpg around town. Handling is spot on, and I always feel well controlled and safe. I have towed with it and forgot that the loaded trailer was even back there! Plus, it's a great looking SUV. My only complaint is that the rear floor could be lower. The dealers have been great, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my oil changes will only cost about $40. I now have 52000 miles on the clock, and I love this car even more. I'm out of my free service period, but the total cost for my last service was well under $100.That same service at the MB dealer was always way over $250, and they would ALWAYS find another $600+ of things that absolutely had to be done. This Tahoe remains tight (no squeaks or rattles,) super comfortable, very competent in the snow and heavy rain, and a joy to drive. No complaints at all. My mileage has dropped a little to the 21mpg overall range. But I am due for tires, and I'm sure that the mileage will pick back up with some quality high carbon tires. More updates to come! UPDATE 8/9/16: As mentioned, I drive a LOT! I just passed the 70K mile point, and I still LOVE this car! This Chevy is more reliable, more comfortable, and seemly better made than any of my last 3-4 Mercedes. There are zero signs of wear, suspension is still tight, no squeaks or rattles, and everything works perfectly. It's a shame that I am so surprised by how good this car is! I just had new tires installed, and I went with the same OEM tires that came on the Tahoe: Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max. They lasted 70K miles without any issues, they ran quiet, had good grip in all conditions (I don't encounter much snow,) and they're inexpensive. But I've had to return to the tire shop a couple times due to flat spots on one of the new tires. Same tire being replaced for the 3rd time! So back to the Tahoe... I still love it. Zero problems. And still seems brand new after 70K miles. What more can you ask for? Update 8/9/17: Yes... I drive a LOT! I now have 107K miles on the Tahoe. I'm afraid to jinx it, but I have honestly had zero issues, and the Tahoe is nearly as tight as when I bought it. No squeaks, rattle, or trim pieces falling off. The suspension is almost as tight as new, but you can tell it has a few miles on it now. It is a bit softer over big bumps, but still smooth and quiet, and the steering is still perfect. Mileage is unchanged.I've been really impressed with the construction, fit, and finish of the car. I may need to replace the front rotors within the next 10K miles, but that's not bad considering I'm still on the original pads! I'm thinking of keeping this car for a while. As of 2/12/18, the car had 112K+ miles and still looked like new. The mileage has dropped a little, but I think that may be partially due to the newer tires (AT tires instead of highway... not as comfortable!). The service center guys say that after I do full/major service, the mileage should come back up. Other than that, everything is still perfect! I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. As of 2/12/19, there has been absolutely no change. After owning so many

As a woman, I must say that my 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is a joy to handle. It's extremely comfortable, great looking, and the best vehicle purchase I've made in 25 years. I absolutely love it!

I'm so glad to hear that you upgraded from a '12 to a '15! It sounds like you're really enjoying the new model. I'm impressed to hear that the 4x4 is still getting better gas mileage than your previous 4x2. The nav system also sounds like a great improvement. Your silver model with gray leather and 22
