2004 Chevrolet Tahoe problems
The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe problems
The 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV that has been praised for its responsive powertrain and quiet cabin, but criticized for its cheap build quality, tight third-row seat, and handling. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported with this vehicle.
One of the most common problems with the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe is electrical issues, with 213 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This issue is not the most expensive to fix, but it can be inconvenient and dangerous, especially if it happens while driving.
Another issue with the 2004 Tahoe is engine and powertrain problems, although they are relatively scarce. One of the problems reported is slow acceleration, which can be caused by a busted exhaust manifold bolt. This issue can affect the performance and fuel efficiency of the vehicle, and it may require professional repair.
The 2004 Tahoe has also had issues with the brakes, with a recall issued in early 2004 for a fractured o-ring seal in the brake valve. This issue can affect the safety and reliability of the vehicle, and it may require professional repair.
Despite these issues, the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe has a relatively clean record with only 5 recalls on file with the NHTSA. However, there are some issues that have not been addressed, likely because they have been occurring at a low rate of incidence.
In terms of longevity, the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe is expected to last between 200,000 and 250,000 miles, with an annual maintenance cost of around $744.
The 2004 Tahoe's entertainment technology is generous for a 2004 SUV, with a CD player with a 6-disc changer and optional back row DVD players. However, don't expect rearview cameras or lane keep assist.
In conclusion, while the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe has some common problems, it is generally a reliable and durable vehicle with a spacious interior and powerful engines. However, potential buyers should be aware of the electrical issues and other problems that have been reported, and consider the costs of maintenance and repair.

- Summary: My Tahoe has the New Process 246GM transfer case. They have a known issue called pump rub where the pump is to close to the magnesium shell, and rubs pin holes in the shell which causes fluid to dissipate over time causing the transfer case to run dry burning it up. I've had a mechanic check it out and there was no fluid in the case, and now I have a transfer case that's burned up. I've called a transmission shop, and they told me it was a common issue. I would like for general motors to correct this issue

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-10-19
- VIN: 1GNEK13Z84R
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AROUND 25 TO 30 MPH AND A KID RAN OUT BETWEEN TWO CARS AND I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND THEY PARTIALLY FAILED. THE TRUCK EVENTUALLY STOPPED, BUT IMMEDIATELY GOT A BRAKE FAILURE WARNING AND I HAD TO HOLD THE PEDDLE TO THE WALL TO STOP THE REMAINING MILE OR SO HOME. I GET HOME AND LOOK UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR TO INVESTIGATE A PUDDLE AND I SEE SMOKE WHERE THE RUPTURED BRAKE LINE HAD BEEN SPRAYING BRAKE FLUID ON THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THOUGHT FOR SURE THE TRUCK WAS GOING TO CATCH ON FIRE. THE BRAKES WERE JUST SERVICED, PADS AND ROTORS A YEAR OR SO AGO, SO I HAD NO CLUE THE LINES WERE BAD. JUST GOT HOME TO SEARCH ON THIS AND SEE THAT THE NHTSA HAS BEEN INVESTIGATING THIS, BUT NOT MUCH HAS HAPPENED WITH THIS SINCE 2014. VERY DISTRESSING. SEEMS THE ONLY THING THAT HAS BEEN DONE IS GM IS OFFERING THE REPLACEMENT LINES FOR SALE, BUT NO MENTION THAT THE DEALERS WANT $2,000 OR MORE TO INSTALL THEM?? I AM VERY THANKFUL THAT THIS KID IS STILL ALIVE AND WE BOTH DID NOT HAVE TO ENDURE A DEATH DUE TO THE CLOSE CALL. HOWEVER, I'M EXTREMELY DISTURBED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH MILLIONS OF THESE TRUCKS ON THE ROAD AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE WITH THIS TICKING TIME BOMB. EVERY SINGLE SUCH AFFECTED TRUCK WILL EVENTUALLY RUN INTO THE SAME ISSUE, AND PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GET KILLED. GM IS CLEARLY NOT ADDRESSING THIS OR EVEN WARNING PEOPLE OF THE HIDDEN PROBLEM. WHY WON'T YOU GUYS DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS BIG PROBLEM? YOU'VE KNOW ABOUT THIS FOR 4 YEARS AND NOTHINGS BEEN DONE? I'M SHOCKED, THAT GM HAS BEEN ABLE TO AVOID ALL RESPONSIBILITY DUE TO A MFRS DEFECT BY USING CHEAP AND INFERIOR PRODUCTS THAT DO NOT HOLD UP IN THE NORTHERN CLIMATES. COATED BRAKE LINES SHOULD BE MANDATED!!! JUST CAME BACK FROM THE NEXT PAGE TO QUALIFY: NO CRASH - BY ABOUT 1 FOOT. NO FIRE - VERY LUCKY. NO INJURY/FATALITY - THIS VERY CLOSE! I WOULD LIKE A CALL BACK.

THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE FRONT BRAKE LINES WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED. REPLACED THE FRONT BRAKE LINES AT A COST OF $580. ON 5-28-17 MY HUSBAND HAD PULLED INTO A CONVENIENCE STORE AND WAS LETTING MY SON OUT OF THE VEHICLE, HAD HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND YET AGAIN, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. GOT THE VEHICLE HOME, CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR AND ONLY 2" OF FLUID WAS LEFT, CHECKED BRAKE LINES AND FOUND RUSTED OUT PLACES WITH FLUID LEAKING OUT. GOT THE VEHICLE TO OUR MECHANIC, SAME ONE THAT REPLACED THE FRONT LINES, HE ADVISED THE SAME PROBLEM, RUSTED OUT LINES. ESTIMATE TO REPLACE REAR LINES $540. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A "FLAW" WITH THAT YEAR TAHOE AND PICK UP TRUCKS. MY QUESTION IS IF THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS THIS IS A FLAW WITH THE BRAKE LINES WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL TO HAVE THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED??? IT APPEARS TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM, NO BRAKES IS NOT A GOOD SITUATION!!!!!!! SOMETHING NEED TO BE DONE WITH THIS PROBLEM.

APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.
- Consequence: A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT OPEN THE GUIDE LOOP, REMOVE A PORTION OF THE LOOP, AND THEN THE REMAINING TWO SIDES SHOULD BE FOLDED OVER AND SECURED WITH A RETAINER FREE OF CHARGE. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH AN OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION BRAKE HYDRO-BOOST HOUSING RELIEF VALVE BORE.
- Consequence: CONSEQUENTLY, THE VALVE O-RING SEAL MAY FRACTURE. STEERING EFFORTS MAY BE SLIGHTLY INCREASED WHILE BRAKING OR PARKING. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, A FRACTURED SEAL MAY REQUIRE A SLIGHT INCREASE IN THE APPLIED BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT TO ACHIEVE THE SAME VEHICLE DECELERATION RATE AS PRIOR TO THE SEAT FRACTURE.
- Remedy: DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE HYDRO-BOOST RELIEF VALVE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 18, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463; OR HUMMER AT 1-866-486-6376.

The truck is solid, quiet, and has a smooth ride. Performance is very good with the 5.3L engine, even for a heavy truck. Towing my 5,500# trailer is a breeze. However, fuel economy could be better, even with a light foot. Build quality appears to be very good, even better than my '98 Tahoe.

At 33, I decided to switch to American-made cars, not because of their reputation, but because of my patriotism. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I prefer driving my Tahoe LT to my old Camry LE V-6 stick. The Tahoe offers a better view, comparable pick-up when I need it, and I never have to worry about the weather (Detroit weather is NOT kind to commuters). The stability control system is amazing, and it handles so well that you have to work hard to make it fishtail in the snow (my kids think it's funny ;) ). The build quality was better than I expected, with no issues or problems to report. I would not hesitate to recommend it to my friends and look forward to many years (fingers crossed) with this great vehicle.

Your Tahoe sounds like an amazing vehicle! It's great to hear that it's been so reliable and comfortable for you and your family. The fuel economy is impressive for a vehicle of its size, and it's wonderful that it's been able to handle off-road adventures as well. The third row seats are definitely a nice addition for a family with two kids and a dog. Overall, it sounds like you made a fantastic choice with your purchase!

I now have 85k miles on this tahoe. Mechanically, it is in perfect condition! The only repair I've had to make was to the 4wd system sensor, which cost $700. Cosmetically, I keep it washed and waxed and I'm amazed at how it still turns heads. I drive Pacific Coast Highway every day, and to the mountains or river every weekend. I have absolutely no concerns that this vehicle will make it to 250k miles if cared for properly. In my opinion, this is the best SUV for the money.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my fully loaded Z71 that I bought back in November 2004. It was previously driven by a local baseball celebrity for only 3,200 miles in six months. I have to say, it's a pleasure to drive! It's quiet, powerful, and has acceptable fuel economy for its size. I've even towed a utility trailer with my dirt bikes (about 1,000 lbs) and it was a breeze. However, I have had a few issues with it despite only having 35k miles on it. The battery died a few times during the first winter, but a simple computer software update fixed it. I also had to replace the steering intermediate shaft twice (at 20k and 25k miles), and the 4WD system failed at 33k miles due to an encoder motor issue. Unfortunately, the water pump is now leaking at 35k miles. Overall, I still enjoy driving my Z71 despite these minor setbacks. Let me know if you have any questions!

I have been driving imports for the past 20 years, but I decided to take a chance on a new Tahoe. I found the size to be just right for me, and the engine has great horsepower, making for a very nice ride. However, the fuel economy is not great, and I have noticed some issues with the interior. The carpet is not as durable as I would like, and the leather seats have lost their luster and have become spongy. Additionally, I have had some trouble with the tailgate and window trim pieces, which have started to squeak. Despite these issues, I do appreciate the heated seats. I have found Onstar to be a bit expensive, so I have decided not to renew it. Overall, while the Tahoe may not be the best value on the market, I have enjoyed driving it and appreciate its many features.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that my wife and I recently purchased a 2004 Tahoe LS with the 5.3L engine. Unfortunately, we noticed that the vehicle was clunking into gear while driving between 45-55 MPH. We took it to the dealer and after 1,600 miles, Renee and I found out that the car had a faulty radiator which was leaking coolant into the transmission, causing major damage including to the torque converter. However, we were relieved when the dealer stepped up and provided an extended warranty on the new transmission. We're hoping that everything goes smoothly now that the transmission is fixed! Take care.

Our brand new white Chevy Z71, with all the options we selected, was listed at $47,992. Despite some initial concerns, I can confidently say that this car is a great investment. It performs well on the highway and, with some careful driving, can handle turns with ease. While some of the interior features may be made of plastic, they are of high quality and add to the car's overall durability. Although I have noticed a slight exterior whistle, I am confident that any issues will be resolved quickly. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and look forward to enjoying it for years to come.

Actually, I recently had a 1996 car with 196,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the transmissions and fuel pump. I was stranded in the middle of nowhere, but thankfully I was able to get it replaced. I couldn't help but wonder if the manufacturers were trying to cut costs by using cheaper parts. However, I decided to switch to a Honda Pilot and I must say, I am very impressed with it. GM could definitely learn a lot from Honda.
