2023 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe is a popular full-size SUV, but like any vehicle, it can have its share of issues. Here are some common problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Exhaust System: Some owners have reported problems with the exhaust system, including the muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, and related components. These issues can lead to reduced performance, increased emissions, and potential safety hazards.
  • Transmission and Engine Issues: There have been reports of transmission and engine problems, such as the vehicle displaying service engine and transmission messages, traction control becoming unavailable, and forward collision warnings not functioning properly. These issues can be caused by various factors, including faulty sensors, software glitches, or mechanical problems.
  • AC and Roof Damage: Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, including leaks in the evaporator, which can lead to the AC going out after a short period of use. Additionally, there have been reports of damage to the roof during delivery, which can be a cause for concern for potential buyers.
  • Infotainment System: The infotainment system in the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe has been criticized for being unusable without cell system connectivity. Offline maps downloaded to the system often disappear within two weeks, making it unreliable for navigation in areas with no connectivity.
  • Interior Quality and Reliability: Some owners have reported issues with the interior quality, including excessive vibration from the transmission and concerns about the reliability of the vehicle. These issues can impact the overall driving experience and satisfaction with the vehicle.

While these issues can be concerning, it is important to note that not all 2023 Chevrolet Tahoes will experience these problems. If you are considering purchasing a Tahoe, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic and to be aware of these potential issues.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 1GNSKPKD3PR
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The windshield wipers stop working. This is the third time it has occurred in the last 8,000 miles. While driving they quit working and will start back after.20-25 minutes. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: 1GNSKPKD1PR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I am writing to express my deep frustration with a recent issue I have encountered with my brand new 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe (VIN: [XXX] ). Following the expiration of my complimentary OnStar subscription, I discovered that all voice-activated and Bluetooth functions are inoperable unless I purchase a separate wireless plan at $25 / month which I cannot afford. This is a stark contrast to my previous six Chevrolets, all of which allowed hands-free phone calls and navigation functionalities via Bluetooth without requiring an additional subscription. I have contacted two Chevrolet dealerships, spoken with numerous employees, and reached out to OnStar, spending a total of nearly two hours on the phone attempting to resolve this issue. Unfortunately, no solution has been found. My primary concern is safety. Manually operating my phone while driving is unacceptable, and in some states illegal, putting myself and others at risk. Additionally, the lack of hands-free navigation significantly detracts from the convenience and value of the vehicle. While I appreciate the technological advancements in the 2023 Tahoe, the current system feels restrictive and potentially detrimental to customer safety. I understand the potential for additional revenue through data plans, but I believe the potential for unsafe driving and safety concerns outweighs this consideration. LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-21
  • VIN: 1GNSKTKL3PR
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The infotainment screed goes black. To get it to go on you have to turn the car off, get out of the car with the key fob so the vehicle is completely disconnected and wait 10 to 15 minutes. After it starts working the infotainment systems "crashes" in about 30 to 45 minutes. It is a constant problem. The infotainment system includes all vehicle safety systems settings and speaker. The warnings will not work because the speaker is not working. Also the On Star system will not work in case of an emergency. On Star uses the infotainment system to work. I can not stop all the time so it dangerous while driving. I took it to the dealer and they said GM knows about the problem but does not have a fix. The problem started near the end of June, 2024. The issue was reproduced by the dealer.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: 1GNSCNKD2PR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: At 5000 miles after the last oil change, my low oil light came on, took it to my local mechanic and he said it was 3 quarts low. took it to the dealership and they say this is normal but have me to a check every time i put gas up to 2000 miles. bring it back and they say its one quart low and this is normal. The attendant at the dealership says he sees this often and knows its frustrating but thats GM policy and there is nothing he can do. I do not think this is normal and have searched on the internet and find that many people have this problem. I do hope this is looked into because i feel like this is an issue and GM doesnt want to have to fix it because of cost

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-28
  • VIN: 1GNSKRKL7PR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 5/27/23 I purchased a new 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST with a 6.2L V8 engine. On 5/28/2024, between 5 and 6pm (rush hour) I merged onto State Highway 32 in Maryland. I accelerated to match the speed of traffic and moved to the far-left lane. I was traveling between 60 and 65 MPH when my vehicle shifted into neutral by itself. I was unable to shift the vehicle back into drive. There was no shoulder on the left, so I had to coast through 2 lanes of traffic moving at a similar speed to reach the far-right lane. I could have very easily caused an accident, injuring myself or others. After successfully pulling off onto the shoulder I was still unable to move out of neutral. I had to shut off my engine and restart the vehicle to shift it into drive. I was unable to recreate the failure and safely made it home. In the days following the incident, I began to hear a clicking sound when I accelerated. At no time did a check engine light turn on and my OnStar vehicle report showed my Tahoe was in good health, including the engine. I brought the vehicle to Criswell Chevrolet on 6/14/24 to service the vehicle. I was told later that afternoon that my vehicle required a brand new engine. The vehicle and engine are available for inspection upon request. I was awestruck that a brand new vehicle with 19,000 miles could possibly need to have the engine replaced. While conducting online research, I see that other 2023 Tahoe owners have had a similar experience.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNSKSKD4PR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Bought new and there was a brake pad sensor message immediately that we took it to the dealer several times for and nothing was done other than clearing the code and giving it back. Was in accident 1/24 and it was found that there was a frayed/damaged wire in the break module and break pad sensor that I feel could have led to the accident

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-16
  • VIN: 1GNSKSKL1PR
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Tire is torn in the sidewall at the bead inside the rim edge. The tire had less than 10,000 miles on it and was installed on March 14th 2023, failing around [XXX] (around 9 months of use). It had been installed on a set of Chevrolet wheels before arriving at the dealership and that tire/wheel combo was installed on the Tahoe by Chevrolet in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The tire failure appeared to occur without provocation and failed on a 2.1 mile drive from the store home. The tire on the rim was mostly covered by the edge of the rim and it was very hard to spot visually. There was no damage to the rim, nor any reason the tire might have been lacerated by the rim. Upon dismount for replacement, the damage appears to be a tear or rip and does not appear to be puncture damage. The tire was replaced at Chevrolet and they noted that there was no reason for the damage (and charging us for the failure). The tire was then shipped to Bridgestone and was returned to the Chevrolet dealer and it was explained that they said, "it happens". The only warning lamp that illuminated was the TPMS low pressure warning as the tire quickly deflated. I still have the tire in my possession for inspection. My safety was put at risk because the tear occurred during normal driving and without provocation. Luckily we were in the neighborhood and speed was 25 mph. Had this happened on the interstate, the outcome could have been quite different. This was a Bridgestone Alenza A/S 02 275/50R22 111H M+S dated 5022. Thank you! ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-29
  • VIN: 1GNSKNKD2PR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I've had my 2023 Tahoe for 15 months, purchased Dec. 2023 Issue #1. Dash message on start up " Restraint System Needs Service". I noticed small lights overhead (buttons for tail gate, sun roof, reading lamps) were off. I pressed some of them, and dash message went away, and lights came on. Everything worked fine. I've narrowed it down to the passenger side reading light. When dash warning comes on, I press reading light, and whalla! all works fine. This has happened about 6 times over the last year. Issue #2. After driving many hours (9 hr drive, then a 2hr drive, then 4hr hr drive on different days/nights) in rain with wipers in auto mode, using defrost on and off as needed. Suddenly, wipers stop working as well as headlights in auto mode! Scary. Pulled over and waited with engine off. Restarted and still nothing. I was able to use headlights in full ON mode. I turned the wiper switch all the way from top-pulse to the full-on 4-6 times really quick back and forth, and like magic, everything worked again! This has happened 3 times in the last 2 months (always during several hours of rainy weather driving). Dealer says they can't fix what they can't witness. I suppose my only recourse is to video tape it and then show dealership.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-13
  • VIN: 1GNSCNKT6PR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: This is a brand new vehicle with a known problem to GM yet they keep selling them and admit they cannot fix it. The audio system, including the blinker sound, is warning systems and hands free phone capabilities do not work properly, if at all. This is a distraction while driving - especially when it comes to phone use. It is deceptive and putting public safety at risk, not to mention costing consumers thousands of dollars. Their built in safety system (onstar) cannot be accessed due to lack of audio rendering it useless in a crash/emergency which is a selling point they tout. I do have video of this occurring. Dealership says they cannot repair and that consumers are just stuck with expensive vehicles they cannot rely on.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-24
  • VIN: 1GNSKSKL3PR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: We have a chevy with the 6.2 V8 engine. First we were at a stop light on the highway and the car shifted into Neutral and would not come out for two light cycles. My wife and children were stuck at the light with car's swerving around them at 65+. Finally it shifted into Drive. We called the Chevy dealership and they said it would be a month before they could look at the car and there were no check engine warnings. Two days later my wife and family were driving down the highway and suddenly it started making a flapping sound from the engine bay and was losing power. She pulled over and turned off the vehicle to see if that changed anything. The car would not restart and the check engine light was on (solid not flashing) it would just try to turn over with no success. We had it flat bed towed to the chevy dealership where they told us the engine was blown and that it had thrown a rod. We have 3900 miles on the vehicle and I would say this is a significant safety issue given that it can disable the vehicle on a busy highway.

Negative 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Cordelia Koch 2024-11-28

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car that I purchased back in January. Overall, it's been a great car with amazing amenities. However, in March, we started experiencing a bit of a shimmy. We took it back to the dealer and unfortunately, they didn't have the part to fix the issue, which they said was related to the fuel injection. It's now mid-May and we're still waiting to get our Tahoe back. It looks like it might be a few more months before we can get it back, but we're hopeful that it will be worth the wait!

The 2023 Z71 Tahoe has experienced multiple issues with its radio system, apple car play, phone connectivity, and AC. Despite two visits to the dealership, the issues persist. These problems need to be addressed and resolved promptly to ensure customer satisfaction.

You've probably been to the dealer so many times that your car knows the way! It's frustrating when it only decides to crank on certain days, and it seems like the mechanics don't have a clue what to do. Let's see if we can figure this out together.

The 2023 Tahoe has been experiencing some issues with the infotainment center and the driver side back door. Despite taking it to the dealership, the issues persist. It may be worth considering other options besides Chevy.

My wife and I recently moved back to the US after living abroad for seven years. We were thrilled to get back to driving big vehicles and decided to purchase a 2023 Tahoe RST Performance edition. Unfortunately, our experience with the car has been disappointing. The vehicle cost us just under $80k, which included features such as maps, sign recognition, and voice control. However, we were disappointed to learn that these features only work if we pay a monthly fee for internet access. The cost of this fee is $75 per month for the first year and then increases to $150 per month. We believe that when you spend $80k on a car, you should not have to pay extra for features that you have already paid for. Additionally, we have experienced some issues with the car, including squeaking noises and a faulty plastic piece in the back window. When we took the car to our local dealership, they were not very helpful and did not fix the issues. Unfortunately, the car eventually died while we were out running errands and we had to have it towed to the dealership. We are now without a vehicle and are struggling to find a solution. We hope that the dealership will be able to help us soon.Unless you want to pay from your own pocket to rent a Hertz vehicle until the vehicle is fixed and they will

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your High Country! However, as a formal Tahoe owner, I was under the impression that the High Country, being the top of the Tahoe chain, would come equipped with every feature. Unfortunately, I wasn't informed that the automatic running boards were not standard. This was a feature that I would have loved to have had the option to include, especially considering the price I paid. It's always a good idea to ask your salesperson about any features that are important to you. I didn't think to do so, as I assumed that everything available would be included in this vehicle at this price point. Nonetheless, I'm still very pleased with my purchase and may consider adding the running boards later on.

I absolutely love my Tahoe, even though it doesn't have all the fancy features of a Cadillac. The RST model with its 6.2l motor drives like a dream and feels much smaller than it actually is. The seats are incredibly comfortable, and they only get better with time. My wife was initially hesitant to get a Tahoe because of its size, but now she won't go back to a mid-size SUV. She finds it surprisingly easy to drive!

I'm so glad you found the perfect SUV for you and your wife! The Tahoe was a great choice, especially with its selective four-wheel drive that can be switched at speed. During your test drive, you found it to be incredibly quiet and comfortable, which is always a plus. It's great that the seats fold electrically, making it convenient for transporting your dogs to the vet. And with plenty of leg room in the second row, you can even bring along an occasional passenger. The large sunroof, 360 camera, Bose sound system, and power everything make this Tahoe even more impressive. I hope it proves to be reliable for you in the long run, but it sounds like you made a fantastic choice that will last you a lifetime!

There are lots of newer things to learn, but the dealership went through everything with us.
