2017 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe is generally a reliable and practical large SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Worn-Out Starter Motor: Another common issue with the 2017 Tahoe is a worn-out starter motor. This problem can be caused by the starter motor wearing out over time, requiring replacement.
  • Paint Issues: Some owners of the 2017 Tahoe have reported paint issues, which can be a cosmetic problem that affects the overall appearance of the vehicle.
  • Service 4WD Message: This issue is caused by a faulty selector switch or transfer case encoder sensor, which can trigger an annoying message on the dashboard. While this problem is not safety-critical, it can be frustrating for owners.
  • Cracked Dashboard: Another common problem with the Tahoe is a cracked dashboard, which is mostly a cosmetic issue that can affect the overall appearance of the vehicle. However, it can be an aggravating problem for owners, especially when GM won't fix it.
  • Low Oil Pressure: Some drivers have reported low oil pressure in their Tahoe, which can cause decreased engine performance and illuminate the check engine light. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty oil pump or a clogged oil filter.
  • A/C System Stopped Working: This issue can be caused by a refrigerant leak, electrical issues, or a faulty A/C compressor. The typical repair job to fix this problem is to replace the broken parts like the compressor or condenser.

It's important to note that these problems are similar to other large SUVs, leading to average repair costs as a Tahoe ages. However, regular annual maintenance costs are similar to some other large SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $607 per year.

In summary, while the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe is a reliable and practical large SUV, it has its share of common problems, including A/C condenser leaking, worn-out starter motor, paint issues, Service 4WD message, cracked dashboard, low oil pressure, and A/C system stopped working. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to some other large SUVs, and as a used 2017 Tahoe reaches 100,000 miles, owners should be prepared to replace certain parts.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-29
  • VIN: 1GNSKBKC4HR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I just experienced an issue with my transmission, I was driving home from work in cruise control and started up a bridge when my vehicle seemed to disengage the clutch and start rapidly slowing down (I was going up the incline of the bridge) and the motor redlined trying to maintain speed. I immediately switched it back into regular drive mode and noticed that the engine was not engaging with the transmission. I then placed the column shift into the manual setting and dropped down to 3rd gear, the tahoe gave a really abrupt and hard impact on the transmission and I got it to reangage to continue up the incline. This happened more than a dozen times in the remaining 15 miles to my home, both in and out of the manual setting. I did not attempt to go back to curise control. When I got home I turned the car off and checked the trans fluid level and saw nothing on the dipstick, I let it cool off and I have fluid past the "hot" mark and into the S curve of the stick. I was able to determine that my transmission was having a majority of its issues beyone 3rd gear. After doing some very quick research on Google it appears that I'm not the only one having transmission issues, primarily with 3rd and 4th gear of this year make and model. Is this something that is being investigated? My vehicle has 103k miles and is planned for a fluid change in the next couple of weeks (transmission, transfer case, and rear differential), per the O&M book that came with the vehicle. This just happened today and I have not had an opportunity to reach out to the dealership to question them about it. There were no warning indicators or error messages during the drive or during the time this occurred. All recall notices have been repaired on the tahoe to date, and I have kept up with the other fluid changes and other misc o&m recommendations. Please, any feedback would be very appreciated as this is my primary and safest vehicle to transport my kids.

I was on a major interstate when the transmission failed causing the vehicle to decelerate. The car was towed to a Chevy dealership where they have confirmed the transmission needs to be replaced and this has been an ongoing issue with this vehicle. There were no warning lights prior. The check engine light came on after the transmission failed.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 1GNSCCKC4HR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brakes become very hard to engage while at a low speed, consistently in traffic and the car rider line at school. It has caused me to almost hit cars in front of me and people walking between cars. To me, it feels like the brakes are sticking and not releasing fully when I release the pedal to recoil and as if a line is going to be filled with pressurized air to work again and it is not able to do so. If i wait and let the cars go far ahead of me and the blast without using brakes, there isn’t a need to keep using the brake m, but this is not how to drive in traffic and it isn’t safe. It also is scary to not rely on the function of my brakes and it is putting people at risk every day I drop my kids off or kick them up from school. I have had the brakes evaluated for repair, but I am told there is no issue with the brake pads or roters. No warning lights. It resolved after having my brakes evaluated and tires replaced, but it has returned.

Luckily I was on a residential street and was able to get out of the road with a lot of effort steering. The car was taken to a local mechanic and we were told the power steering motor went out. The mechanic ordered the part and replaced it. The process took 3 weeks total to get the part, replace it and Chevy dealer reprogramming it.

2017 Chevrolet Tahoe recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe.

2019-10-24
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:WHEEL SPEED SENSOR
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
  • Consequence: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.
2019-09-06
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.
  • Consequence: As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.
2016-09-08
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 13, 2016. Negative 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Kennedy Pouros 2024-10-16

The radiator and A/C condenser had to be replaced. The radiator was replaced around 55k miles and the condenser at 66k. Unfortunately, the condenser replacement was just beyond the recall period of 60k miles for this part due to a defective seal. Additionally, I have brought the vehicle in twice for subpar performance when accelerating quickly (merging onto the highway). The dealer keeps saying that the fuel injector code doesn't get triggered while driving, but the vehicle hesitates with the gas pressed down and then jumps/jerks (rpm's over 3k).

If you are a previous owner, make sure to find out how GM changed packages before you buy. You may end up missing features that you were expecting.

I purchased my Tahoe used in October 2021 with only 54k miles, which is not bad for a 2017 model. I needed more space, so I traded in my Highlander for the Tahoe. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the worst mistake of my life! The only good thing about this car is its looks. Within three months, I had to replace the A/C condenser, which cost me $1,000. Now, it's still making growling noises when the A/C is on, and I'm thinking it might be the actuator or, worse, the compressor. Additionally, there are rattling noises when I accelerate. It's the most problematic car I've ever owned, and I honestly wanted one so badly because it seemed so spacious and big. I never thought it would give me such big problems. After reading more reviews on catalytic converters and A/C, I realized that all of these noises are common in Tahoes. I will never buy a GM car again. What a waste!

My 2017 Tahoe has had some issues, including the air conditioning going out just after the warranty expired, the transmission failing at 112k, and the center console latch breaking after 5 years. Unfortunately, it's currently experiencing some problems and is not driveable until we figure out what's wrong. While I've had some challenges with this vehicle, I'm confident that we'll be able to resolve the issue and get it back on the road. In the past, I owned a 2001 Toyota Sienna that was incredibly reliable and lasted over 200k miles without any issues.

Positive 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

Have you ever driven other SUVs? If you have, then you should try driving a Tahoe with 20” wheels. Although the ride with 22” wheels can be a bit choppy, I still love my 2017 Tahoe Premier! Recently, I had to get it repaired after a tree limb fell on it and caused some damage on the top and small scuffs all over. During the repair process, I rented a Ford Expedition and a Nissan Murano. While the Ford had lots of positive attributes, it did not compare to my Tahoe. I previously owned a 2007 Tahoe that I drove the wheels off of. I absolutely love these vehicles and will definitely get another one when this one has run its course.

Spacious, comfortable and reliable. Love this SUV! This is a vehicle for those that value space, ride height and safety. At 67,000 miles, no repairs with the exception of vacuuming and refilling the AC refrigerant. However, I did notice that the paint clearcoat on the roof and hood has completely disappeared and it is a mess! I read that a class action lawsuit was filed this past summer out of central Florida for the poor paint.
