2003 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe is known to have several common problems, primarily related to electrical issues and the 4WD system.

  • 4WD system: The 4WD transfer case position sensor/selector switch may fail, causing the "Service 4WD" message to appear on the dashboard. This issue affects more than a dozen Chevrolet Tahoes and is caused by a faulty selector switch or transfer case encoder sensor.
  • Cracked dashboard: One of the most complained-about issues with the Tahoe is the cracked dashboard, which is primarily a cosmetic problem but can be frustrating.
  • Low oil pressure: Another reliability issue with the Tahoe is low oil pressure, which can lead to decreased engine performance and the illumination of the check engine light.
  • A/C system failure: The A/C system in the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe can fail due to refrigerant leaks, electrical issues, or a faulty A/C compressor. The typical repair job involves replacing the broken parts, such as the compressor or condenser.
  • Interior accessory defects: Cracked dashboards, incorrect speedometers, incessantly flashing interior lights, bad lock actuators, and malfunctioning radio systems are common in many Chevrolet Tahoe models, including the 2003 model.

In summary, the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe has several common problems, primarily related to electrical issues, the 4WD system, and interior accessory defects. These issues can lead to inconvenience, decreased performance, and even safety concerns. It is essential to be aware of these problems when considering purchasing or maintaining a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-04
  • VIN: 1GNEK13Z33J
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SEATS
  • Summary: I bought my 2003 Chevy Tahoe used and as is at a dealership for $10,000. Yes, I've been robbed. The truck is in great LOOKING condition. Has a little bit of superficial dings and a couple dents but overall exterior is great. Interior isn't shabby. Has wear on the driver's seat but not bad. The first thing that happened, I was on my way to work at 4 in the morning, turned on right blinker to change lanes, about blinded the guy in front of me with high beam lights. I thought I had bumped the switch, I took the right to get off at my exit I was more mindful. Definitely not a me thing. The high beam came on with the right blinker. So, the next thing. CD player runs continuously without a disc in. I cannot put a disc in. There may be discs already in there, it is a 6 disc changer, but it will not play. The radio has a mind of its own. Plays what it wants at anytime its on. My husband drove it, tried to adjust the driver's seat and all it did was growl at him. It doesn't move except forward and back. My speedometer had a glitch one time. I was driving at 35mph and it showed 60mph. I turned it off, then back on, hasn't done that again. My heater works but it's difficult to change the individual temp settings. Almost as if the push buttons are worn inside or have a bad connection. The air conditioner only works when I'm on the freeway and not in stop and go traffic. The first time I turned on the AC, it blew all hot air for longer than 10 minutes. Halfway home I turned it on again but kept the button in off setting, I have cold air. There is a loud popping underneath when I turn left. Also, dropped into 4H driving down the highway at 65mph. Thought I was going to die. I have to drive in auto all wheel because the buttons are messed up. In 2H or 4H I get 4L. It is a mess. The dash is confused. 4 wheel does not go in easily, It bangs when it goes in and comes out. It really isn't safe but I was soaked on the price, I am female and first purchase. Should have bought a Ford

I LEFT THE VEHICLE AND CALLED 911 AND WITHIN MINUTES THE WHOLE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE POLICE AND FIRE SERVICE ARRIVED AND EVENTUALLY THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED AFTER IT HAD BURNED THROUGH MOST OF THE VEHICLE. FORTUNATELY I WAS ON MY OWN AND I SUFFERED NO INJURIES EXCEPT A FEW MINOR BURNS TO MY HANDS. • Summary: TAKATA RECALL, TODAY, MAY 31, 2019, I DROVE MY TRUCK TO A MEETING AT 1:30 IN THE AFTERNOON AND PARKED MY VEHICLE IN THE PARKING LOT (IT WAS STATIONARY IN A CITY PARKING LOT). WHEN I RETURNED TO MY CAR AFTER THE MEETING AT 3:30 IN THE AFTERNOON I OPEN MY CAR AND THE INTERIOR WAS ENGULFED IN SMOKE. A COMPONENT OF THE POWER SEAT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE STARTED THE FIRE. IT WAS FORTUNATE NO ONE WAS IN THE TRUCK AT THE TIME AND THE WINDOWS WERE CLOSED. AFTER THE FIRE IGNITED AND USED UP ALL THE OXYGEN IN THE INTERIOR THE FIRE BURNED OUT ON IT'S OWN. I DID CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE. (I'VE INCLUDED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATORS CARD AND I CAN OBTAIN A REPORT IF NEEDED). THE INVESTIGATOR WAS THE ONE THAT DETERMINED WHERE THE FIRE STARTED. HE EXPLAINED THAT THE TOP LAYER OF THE SEAT UPHOLSTERY HAS SOME FIRE RETARDANT BUT THE UNDERSIDE DOES NOT. YOU CAN SEE THAT THE SEAT WAS BURNED FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP, THE ELECTRICAL WAS STILL OPERATIONAL AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE LIGHTS THAT ARE ON IN THE PHOTOS. I CAN FIND NO RECALL ON THIS ISSUE AND YOUR ASSISTANCE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPEN IF I HAD BEEN BEHIND THE WHEEL WHILE DRIVING AND OR HAD MY DAUGHTER WITH ME. I AM THE SOLE OWNER OF THIS CHEVY TAHOE SINCE 2003. I WAS COMPLETELY STOCK AND NO OUTSIDE WORK HAS EVER BEEN DONE TO IT. I HAVE HAD IT REGULARLY SERVICED AND IT WAS RUNNING GREAT. I HAVE NEVER NOTICED ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY SEATS. I DO NOT SMOKE AND HAD NO OTHER COMBUSTIBLES IN THE CAR. PLEASE SEE PHOTO'S ATTACHED. ## VIN PASSED ## CHEVY TAHOE 2003 ##

  • Remedy: PRO-A MOTORS WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER TO REPURCHASE THE LAMPS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 3, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PRO-A MOTORS AT 323-838-2988.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:REAR/OTHER
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.
  • Consequence: A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT OPEN THE GUIDE LOOP, REMOVE A PORTION OF THE LOOP, AND THEN THE REMAINING TWO SIDES SHOULD BE FOLDED OVER AND SECURED WITH A RETAINER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 21, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, OR HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, PICKUP TRUCKS, AND PASSENGER VANS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 135, ?PASSENGER CAR BRAKE SYSTEMS.? SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH AN OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION BRAKE HYDRO-BOOST HOUSING RELIEF VALVE BORE.
  • Consequence: CONSEQUENTLY, THE VALVE O-RING SEAL MAY FRACTURE. STEERING EFFORTS MAY BE SLIGHTLY INCREASED WHILE BRAKING OR PARKING. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, A FRACTURED SEAL MAY REQUIRE A SLIGHT INCREASE IN THE APPLIED BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT TO ACHIEVE THE SAME VEHICLE DECELERATION RATE AS PRIOR TO THE SEAT FRACTURE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE HYDRO-BOOST RELIEF VALVE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 18, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463; OR HUMMER AT 1-866-486-6376.

THESE UNITS CONTAIN A COURTESY LIGHT OR LIGHTS THAT MIGHT OVERHEAT WHEN THE WIRE HARNESS IS EXPOSED TO EXCESSIVE MOISTURE AND ROAD SALT.
  • Consequence: THIS OVERHEATING CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE RUNNING BOARD TO MELT OR CAUSE A FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS ON THESE RUNNING BOARDS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 7, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SOUTHERN COMFORT AT 1-800-745-6096.

  • Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 214, "SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION." THESE VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH FOUR WELDS ON THE REAR DOOR UPPER HINGE. ON SOME OF THESE VEHICLES, ONE OR TWO OF THE WELDS MAY NOT BE TO SPECIFICATION.
  • Consequence: AS A RESULT, THE DOOR STRENGTH MAY BE DEGRADED DURING A SIDE IMPACT VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WELDS ON THE LEFT REAR DOOR UPPER HINGE. IF A WELD IS FOUND OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION, A BOLT WILL BE INSTALLED TO SECURE THE HINGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 17, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-800-458-8006, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, OR GMC AT 1-800-462-8782.

Negative 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Damian Koss 2024-10-20

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. Unfortunately, I've had to replace a few parts such as water pumps, starters, and alternators, even though they were GM factory parts. Additionally, the interior has had some issues with the dash cracking and the seat frame breaking, despite my weight being only 185 lbs. Overall, it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I'm hopeful for better luck in the future!

  2. Jon Reynolds 2024-10-19

Hi there! I bought this car for its off-road capabilities, but I've only had the chance to take it out a few times. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with electrical issues and have had to take it in for repairs a few times.

  3. Alden Krajcik 2024-09-14

I have experienced several issues with my Tahoe, including rattles, engine noises, frequent battery replacements, and persistent check engine light. Despite multiple attempts by the dealership to repair these issues, they have not been fully resolved. While I was initially hesitant to purchase a Tahoe over a Sequoia, I now regret my decision and will not be making the same mistake again.

  4. Mortimer Mertz 2024-09-11

The truck is great, but it requires frequent servicing for minor issues. Unfortunately, the dealer's service is not up to par, and they do not provide loaner vehicles. For a truck that costs $45,000, a loaner vehicle should be provided. Chevy considers minor defects to be 'normal', such as water in the front lens, loud buzzing from the fuel pump, and steering vibration. The front passenger side of the vehicle has been checked twice for water leaks. However, if you're looking for a vehicle that is treated with respect, I recommend purchasing an Infiniti, Lexus, or Acura. These imports provide new loaners when needed and are of much better quality than Chevy, at a similar price point. It's important not to fall for the 'Buy American' propaganda that the Big 3 use to justify their poor quality, which insults every American.

  5. Duncan Dicki 2024-09-03

The car may not be the best, but it's paid off and who wants to go through the hassle of buying another one? I was surprised to find out that it cost me $477.00 to replace just one rear automatic window on my 2003 Tahoe. To make matters worse, the driver's seat seatback broke out of nowhere and that was another $368.00. I'm just hoping the economy will improve soon so I can afford to get rid of this money pit. It's no wonder GM is struggling. Who wants a vehicle that even after you pay it off, you're still paying big bucks for the little things you expect to last? I call this Tahoe my Yugo. Now the windshield washer reservoir has gone out, which will probably cost another $300.00. It never ends...

Positive 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Benny Prosacco 2024-10-25

The Tahoe is by far my favorite car. We leased this car new in 03 and bought it when the lease was up. With 2 kids and a great dane, this car fits everything! Although we've had to replace the fuel pump and transmission, minor annoyances like the parking brake and electrical issues have not stopped 'Bessie' from starting every single time for 113,000 miles. We will be heartbroken to see her go.

  2. Orland Crist 2024-10-24

If you're considering purchasing a Tahoe or GMC, the Z71 pack is a must-have. Although it may be costly (over 5K), the value is unbeatable - basically, the Z71 pack includes everything you need. From XM radio and an on-board computer to a towing package and awesome trim, it has it all. The sticker price is around 44-45K, but dealers usually offer a discount of 5-6K, bringing it down to under 38K.

  3. Madyson Howell 2024-10-22

I love it! It hauls the kids and sometimes the in-laws. It pulls out tree stumps. It's easy to maneuver, it pulls a jet-ski, and it will hold 40 bags of mulch. If it was stolen today, I'd buy another one in the morning!

  4. Lucas Hammes 2024-10-21

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle! It sounds like the added features were definitely worth the investment.

  5. Walter Hill 2024-10-10

We recently upgraded our vehicle from a 1997 Chevy Silverado Ext Cab to a 2003 Chevy Tahoe and we couldn't be happier with our decision! The Tahoe's steering is a dream compared to the Silverado, which was always a challenge to maneuver. We're impressed with how easy it is to turn, park, and navigate through parking lots. In fact, we've found that it handles even better than our BMW! Overall, we're extremely satisfied with the smooth ride and excellent handling of our new Tahoe.
