2021 Chevrolet Tahoe problems
The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
- VIN: 1GNSKNKD6MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was stranded and had to have my vehicle towed after the fuel pump control module failed.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
- VIN: 1GNSKPKD8MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle has 10,800 miles. The vehicle repeatedly failed to start. Towed to GM dealership. They say the fuel pump has failed. They say it is not covered (beccause my VIN isn't within the recalls that already exist for this exact same problem). The cost is over $1,200. I contacted Chevy corporate and they offered to cover 30%. The dealership is still awaiting the part(s) with no provided delivery date. This could have caused a serious MV accident if it had failed while driving. The vehicle gave no warning of this failure.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-11
- VIN: 1GNSKPKD8MR
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Took the vehicle in for Airbag System recall in 2022. They said they fixed it and that there was a broken wire. The very next day the warning light came on again like before. I contacted the dealership and they said bring it in. I could not get it in again as I was very busy. I asked them to make a note in my file of the immediate call/report of still a problem. I took the vehicle in this month (October 2024) for issue of no starting (fuel pump failure, another recall they are denying). They stated that the Drivers Side Airbag module was shorted or bad and my cost would be approximately $1,250. They stated it was not covered under any recall. I contacted Chevy corporate that offered to cover 30% only of this. I believe this should be covered in whole due to the failure to repair the first time and that is is a known safety issue. The vehicle has only 10,800 miles.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 1GNSKPKD5MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Engine would not start. When pressing the start button, engine would turn over but would only rough idle for a few moments then turn off. Called garage and had vehicle towed. Mechanic advised computer showed defective fuel pump power control module. Mechanic advised GM has recall N212332040 for defective fuel pump power control module but my VIN is not included. Mechanic ordered fuel pump power control module from GM and replaced on my vehicle. This corrected the problem. I am requesting my VIN to be added to the recall and GM to pay for the part, labor and towing.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- VIN: 1GNSKPKD5MR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While my wife was driving her car going down a slope, Her brake pedal fell to the floor loosing brakes and would not return to normal position for a few minutes. I took the vehicle into the dealership over two weeks ago and they have not been able to re-create the situation that took place while my wife was driving the car and still have not returned the vehicle. My concern is that my wife will not feel comfortable driving the car with our toddler and new born if there is no actual repair.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
- VIN: 1GNSKSKT6MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: It’s happened about 10 times since I’ve owned the car but the dealer can’t recreate it so we are out of luck. The vehicle accelerates on its own. Scenario 1…with constant light steady acceleration, it will lurch forward like I’ve stomped on the accelerator a bit, for about a second then go back to my normal input. Scenario 2, same lurch but this time while coming to a stop at a stop sign WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL ONLY. scenario 3…I’ve been using the adaptive cruise control and had it disengaged by braking, coming to a stop, then parking and turning the vehicle off. Then after getting back in and starting up and slowly pulling forward, the cruise control suddenly and abruptly renegages and attempts to accelerate to the last demanded setpoint. Image this scenario pulling out of a spot at a crowded gas station with pedestrians. I almost ran someone the hell over just now at the gas station and I’ve had enough. The dealer won’t do anything and when I called Chevy engineering they put zero effort into it, it was a 20 second phone call stating if it can’t be reproduced at the dealer there’s nothing they can do. This is absolutely completely 100% dangerous and unacceptable
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 1GNSKRKD3MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: In September 2024, our vehicle was unable to be start with engine light on. We were unable to get the car into drive or neutral. We were forced to pay out of pocket to have the car towed to dealer, which it needed to be dragged onto the tow truck. Upon inspection at the dealership we were told it was the fuel pump control module that failed and needed to be replaced. They searched recalls and found none on our vehicle but did comment they are replacing these a lot on same type of vehicle. The part was out of stock & backordered likely due to multiple issues, and took 2 weeks to arrive. Reviewing online many have experienced same issue while driving, luckily, we were not. There is an open recall on this part for many models of the same year and time, but for one reason or another our vehicle is not part of that recall #21V739000 / GM #N212332040. The replacement was covered under warranty but does not cover the tow of almost $300.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
- VIN: 1GNSCRKD6MR
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Driving on the I-95 I abruptly lost power driving in the left lane, RPM dropped all the way down and speed was rapidly decreasing. I had to pull over on the shoulder in the most safe manner possible for myself and other drivers on the road; but it was not without any risk. The body of the car was rattling on my way to the shoulder and the car shut off before I could put the car in Park in a safe place. With my hazard lights on I tried restarting the car but the enging would not turnover, the starter would run and the car would rattle about all whilst creating a traffic jam. Once i noticed the engine light and yielded to the car's inabiltiy to start up, we got the attention of a FHP State trooper who called in a Tow truck for us. Getting te car onto the tow truck in traffic also increased the risk associated for everyone involved. Aftert succesfully oading the car, which was no smooth task as the car could not shift into Neutral; we took the car to my local Firestone. After a diagnostic test done the following morning, we were notified of a fuel pump issue that has been on the recall list for my vehicle, but NOT associated with my VIN.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

Car would not turn back on, and then lights for fuel machine error started coming on. Car sat there trying to turn on, lights off, and then would say push start button, but nothing happened. Car began to shake and continued to try to turn on, yet nothing happened. Car was towed to home, sat for an hour and then started again, check engine light remains on.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-31
- VIN: 1GNSCNKD7MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Several times over the last month, or so, my 2021 Tahoe has hesitated to accelerate while driving. On 7/31/2024 the vehicle was in park, turned on when the vehicle began idling VERY hard, shaking the entire vehicle. The engine was turned off and restarted approximately 10min later. I began driving when the vehicle began shaking, the engine light came on, and the engine then turned OFF while in drive, actively driving down the road (with my child in the vehicle). I coasted into a parking lot and attempted to restart the engine several times, without luck. After sitting for approximately 45min the engine restarted, and I was able to get home. The engine stopped and restarted several more times that evening, without issue. The engine light turned off. The following day the vehicle ran without issue, no engine light on. We took the Tahoe to Total Performance Repair shop where they ran a diagnostic scan of warning light history. The diagnostic scan came back with codes P023F and P129F; fuel pump issues. There is currently a recall for fuel pump module failure on some 2021 Chevy Tahoe vehicles. My specific vehicle is not included in the recall but is experiencing the recalled issues.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
- VIN: 1GNSKPKD9MR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was driving with family (2 adults - including myself, and 5 kids - ages [XXX] ) The truck started to flash warnings and my brakes disabled. We couldn't stop and almost had an accident. I kept pumping the brakes and the E break I didn't give it any gas and we slowly came to a stop after some time. I shut the truck off as I was beyond terrified and tried to start it back up. The lights came on but it didn't turn over to start. Had to have it towed and find an uber for a 7 passenger car. The truck was towed to the nearest dealer (a little over an hour from my home) and I was told it was a battery issue. They replaced the battery didn't check the breaks and told me if the battery dies the breaks stop working. Yet, I had power in the truck just no brakes, when I tried to turn it on the lights went on as did the radio but that was it. I tried to take pictures of the warnings on the dash however we were in Mom panic mode. Chevy is acting as if this isn't an issue. I had to put out over $1,100 between the battery, the fees of the dealership, rental and an uber. If we were going at a higher speed we would have not been okay. It was beyond dangerous and the thought that if a battery suddenly dies you have no breaks, that is just unacceptable. I would love for someone to look into this. I am now looking to see what I can do as I don't feel safe in the truck. I don't want this to happen to anyone else hence why I am asking for someone to please look into this. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-22

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
- VIN: 1GNSKTKL4MR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: WHAT FAILED: Main Radio. SAFETY CONCERNS: GM sent an over the air update to car around July 5, 2024 and the update broke the whole radio system to my car. I now have no access to OnStar, bluetooth for phone safety, maps, blinkers on side mirrors, radio etc. Dealer mentioned it is a very common problem with this particular GM product and the over the air update to cars. When I asked to turn this feature off so it doesn't happen again it is not an option. The Chevrolet Dealer and a sound system specialist has inspected vehicle. Sound System specialist said this part may only be replaced by the dealer as it is the high end radio system. There was no warning of the update happening. The car was in great condition until this update was pushed through in the middle of the day. Now I am being quoted $2000 to fix it with no guarantee that it wont happen again.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 11,400.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
- VIN: 1GNSKNKD4MR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Gps/onstar module not working, I read a lot of people are complaining same thing. I had it for a year, warranty done but I never used it. Sad you spend $70k on a truck and onstar goes bad and you never used it and they want more money to replace it. Now engine light is on.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
- VIN: 1GNSKPKD6MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Other vehicles of my year and make were recalled. My car was manufactured 8/14/21. I was driving on 6/12/24 and my Car died. I had power. I had fuel but fuel was not getting to the engine. It turns out it was the fuel pump control module that many others were recalled. This could have been a very unsafe situation for me as it died in a traffic lane during morning rush hour. It would not start back up for me. My dealer diagnosed it very quickly and is repairing it in 2 days time. Had I been on the freeway, someone would have rearended me. My car has 22,000 miles on it.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-09
- VIN: 1GNSKNKD4MR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I am experiencing loss of power just like the recall shows for campaign 22V036000 powertrain. Engine stall in the middle of the street just like it shows for the fuel system 21V73 9000. I have stalled in the middle of the street including today four times and a month. The dealership can’t seem to find what’s wrong. Nor other places. I don’t think they are looking hard enough at the dealership. I almost got killed by another car going at least 65 mph while I was stuck in the middle of the street at a stoplight. These are all different days. While working and people in my car.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
- VIN: 1GNSKPKD0MR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was driving to work today and I heard what sounded like an explosion, so I stopped and pulled to the side of the road and checked everything and I seen that the sunroof glass was broken, I have only ever used the sunroof twice and that was to see if it was working. My safety and others on the road were at risk because if I would have had the sunroof sliding shade open the glass would have fell on my head or in my face. Also anyone driving behind me I'm sure the glass flew on their vehicle and could caused an accident. I got to work and called the local Chevrolet dealership in town and they said there were no recalls for this problem, but yet I looked it up under GMC forums and there has been other people saying it happened to them, especially the same year and make and model. My vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance yet, I reached out to the Chevrolet dealership and they said there was nothing they could do to help because there were no recalls on my vehicle, so I asked the girl in the service department who was higher then her and could help me because I did nothing wrong and did not feel that I should have to pay to fix this problem. She then gave me customer care contact information and I am waiting for a response. There were no warnings or symptoms or any messages on the dash, my sunroof glass just exploded without any warnings.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-29
- VIN: 1GNSKPKDXMR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: When turning left in cross traffic, the truck stalled. It would crank and try to run, but not start as it wasn't getting any gas. The gas tank was full at the time. The failure was very similar to when I was stranded with the fuel issue in 2021 a couple of months before the recall for the fuel pump failure was issued (NTSA # 21V739000). Fortunately, it did start momentarily so that I could get out of oncoming traffic so that I wasn't t-boned. I was able to get it home, but it failed multiple times in the 8 mile trip back to the house. We will not drive this vehicle as it is unsafe to drive and now we are left to tow the vehicle to the closest dealership which is 50+ miles away. It seems this part only works a few years and then fails.

I just bought the 2021 Tahoe yesterday after a ton of research. I'm so excited and can't wait for our first road trip to get outta dodge! There's so much space, technology, and the ride is so smooth. The sound system is great so far too!

The only modern vehicle I've ever seen that doesn't offer fog lights is this one, in any trim package. However, overall, the vehicle is nice.

It's great to hear that you've joined the Chevy family! I totally understand not wanting to spend too much money, but I'm glad you gave the Tahoe a chance. After test driving it, I can see why you were amazed and decided to purchase it, especially with the Z71 package. The ride is amazing and the handling is top-notch. Plus, there are plenty of safety and comfort options to choose from. Overall, I agree that the 2021 Tahoe is an impressive vehicle!

I know it may seem like a hefty price tag for a fully loaded 2021 Z71 Tahoe, but after driving it around, I truly believe it's worth every penny. My wife and I absolutely love the ride, the quietness, and all the extra features. We couldn't be happier!

I had a 2009 Tahoe that was a fantastic car and got me over 200k miles with few issues. I'm really enjoying the new Z71. The interior is great, it looks stunning, and the increase in interior space is fantastic. Although the tech has a few kinks, it's otherwise great. The ride is nice and comfortable. However, my biggest complaint is the gas mileage. It's worse than my 2009 5.3 by a lot! I've got 12k on mine in 6 months and just took it on a 2000+ mile road trip. I wasn't carrying anything on the top or towing anything, and I was averaging 80 mph, but I was getting 14.5 mpg or less. It's much worse than my 2009 and frankly disappointing. It makes me think there might be something wrong with it. My 2009, even with 200k+ miles on it, would have done at least 17 mpg. It's disappointing enough that I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of it. The fuel economy is a big miss!

The Tahoe Z71 is a stunning vehicle, perfect for those who love the outdoors in Colorado. However, we have experienced some issues with the car not starting in freezing temperatures, which has been a bit disappointing. Despite this, the ride is smooth and the seats are incredibly comfortable. We have had to take the car to the shop a few times, but we are hopeful that the kinks will be worked out soon. We may consider waiting a few years before purchasing a new design. Thank you for your understanding.

As a loyal Chevy owner since the early 90s, I recently upgraded from my 2017 Z71 Tahoe to a 2021 Z71 Tahoe. Unfortunately, the engine lifter has malfunctioned after only 2800 miles of use. Despite the newness of the vehicle, parts are not readily available and I am facing a minimum one-week wait for the necessary part to be manufactured in Michigan. This experience is unprecedented for me, as I have never encountered such issues with any of the seven Chevys I have previously owned. However, I remain confident in Chevy's commitment to quality and look forward to a resolution that meets my expectations. In hindsight, I may have considered waiting for the 2022 model, but I am still proud to be a Chevy owner and will continue to support the brand.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 5th Tahoe LT ('03, '13, '17, '18, '21). I was really excited about my purchase back in July 2020, but unfortunately, this LT model has been back to the dealership for issues more than the previous 4 combined. Recently, a software update failed and it looks like I'll be without the infotainment system/radio for up to 3 weeks, if not longer. I'm a bit disappointed that the point of purchase or service dealerships or GM haven't done much to address the inconvenience of my having purchased a brand new vehicle without the features that went into the decision to purchase. However, I'm hopeful that by bringing this matter to GM's attention, they will stand by their product and truly be concerned about customer satisfaction and appreciate customer loyalty with more than lip service. I'll keep you posted on how things go. Thanks for listening!

I purchased the new 2021 RST two months ago. Despite experiencing a slight misfire since then, I have been able to identify the issue and am confident in resolving it. Unfortunately, I have recently noticed an oil leak from under the engine. While Chevy is unable to accommodate me for a few weeks, I am taking proactive measures to address the issue. Although the vehicle is aesthetically pleasing, I am disappointed by these issues.

I spent $84,000 on our Tahoe before seeing it, which turned out to not be a good idea. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of some of the features or lack thereof. For example, it has an automatic shut off when you stop at a light and there’s no way to turn it off permanently, so you have to cut it off every time you start the truck. Additionally, if somebody’s in the passenger seat, the display tells you to keep your eyes on the road until you hit the button. Furthermore, the seats are uncomfortable and the review mirror is horrible. The live display doesn’t give you the real distance from an object, which caused me to back into a trailer because it looked farther than it was. Lastly, if you make it so it’s not a camera, you can’t see anything because it’s so dark. Overall, I found it to be really disappointing.
