1998 Chevrolet Tahoe problems
The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

What is the most common problem with the Chevy Tahoe?
Chevy Tahoes have issues with their lifters getting stuck or locked in place within newer models equipped with 5.3L L84 V-8 and 6.2L L87 V-8 EcoTec3 engines. An improperly functioning lifter triggers the check engine light and causes: Ticking and banging noises. Misfires.
How many miles can a 1998 Chevy Tahoe last?
Best Answer. With proper maintenance 200,000-250,000 miles. After that, major parts need to be overhauled and it's better to get a newer truck.
Are old Chevy Tahoes reliable?
Quick Answer: Avoid Chevrolet Tahoe Year Models 1999, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2015. There have been several faulty year models in the Chevrolet Tahoe's long history. We recommend avoiding the 1999, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2015 Tahoes.
What year is a good Tahoe?
2010-2014. These four years within the third generation are noted as having fewer problems and easily fixable issues. The 2014 Chevy Tahoe in particular, is known for being a smooth ride with a reliable engine and roomy interior. In 2017, J.D. Power cited it as one of the best large SUVs.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-02-27
- Fire: 1
- VIN: IGNEK13ROWJ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: DRIVER SIDE WINDOW SWITCH CAUGHT FIRE SHORTLY AFTER USE (SEVERAL HOURS). A LIGHT RAIN STORM CAME WHILE THE WINDOWS WERE DOWN. SOME RAIN ENTERED THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, SOME WATER LIKELY GOT INTO THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. THIS ALL HAPPENED WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON THE CURB AND IGNITION WAS OFF. I TOWELED OFF THE INTERIOR AND SWITCH ASSEMBLY OFF, IT DIDN'T APPEAR MUCH WATER ENTERED THE SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND "OFF" THIS WHOLE TIME. I TURNED IGNITION ON TO ROLL WINDOWS BACK UP, AND PROMPTLY TURNED THE IGNITION BACK OFF. SOME HOURS LATER, THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY CAUGHT FIRE AND THE VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THIS FIRE WASN'T DISCOVERED UNTIL THE NEXT DAY AS IT SELF-EXTINGUISHED. THE BATTERY WAS NOT DISCHARGED AFTER THE FIRE, SO IT WAS NOT A DEAD SHORT IN THE WIRING. I BELIEVE THE AUTO-DOWN CIRCUIT BOARD OR THE ELECTRIC MIRROR SWITCH WAS THE CAUSE. AFTER THE FIRE, THE PASS SIDE MIRROR WAS FULLY EXTENDED AWAY, AT SOME POINT THE CONTACTS WERE CLOSED CAUSING THE MIRROR TO MOVE, DESPITE THE IGNITION BEING "OFF". THIS HAPPENED EITHER DURING THE FIRE, OR THE SWITCH WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE IGNITION WAS ONLY "ON" FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS THAT WHOLE DAY PRIOR TO THE FIRE, JUST LONG ENOUGH TO ROLL UP THE WINDOWS.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000.
SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-22
- VIN: 1GNEK13R6WJ
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: MY VEHICLE FAILED TO START UPON LEAVING THE MALL. AFTER SEVERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING PROCEDURES AT MY RESIDENT THE NEXT DAY, I FOUND THAT THE IN TANK FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS NOT WORKING. DURING THE GENTLY LOWERING OF THE FUEL TANK, THE SENDING UNIT TO FILTER FUEL LINE THAT RUNS ALONG THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE FRAME JUST CRUMBLED INTO CHUNKS OF RUST. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION, I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT GM ACTUALLY INSTALLED FUEL LINES MADE OUT OF PLAIN UNPROTECTED STEEL TUBING, ESPECIALLY ON A VEHICLE THAT WAS SOLD AND OPERATED IN A SNOW BELT STATE. ALSO WHILE I WAS REPLACING THE FUEL SUPPLY AND RETURN LINES, I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE LINE THAT FEEDS THE REAR BRAKES THAT ALSO RUNS ALONG THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME WAS IN THE SAME SAD SHAPE, DURING REMOVAL OF THIS BRAKE LINE, IT ALSO CRUMBLED INTO CHUNKS OF RUST, HOW THESE LINES DID NOT FAIL PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT IS BEYOND ME. IF IT WASN'T FOR BEING A SKILLED MECHANIC BY TRADE, THIS WOULD HAVE COST A FORTUNE IN LABOR COST TO REPAIR. FOR A VEHICLE SOLD/OPERATED IN SNOW BELT STATES, THESE LINES SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE OUT OF STAINLESS STEEL OR SOME OTHER NON-FERROUS ALLOY MATERIAL.

ALL FOUR TIRES WERE INFLATED TO THE SPECS (35 PSI). I KEPT DRIVING, AND AFTER 20-25 MILES I HEARD A SOUND AS IF SOMETHING WAS RUBBING IN THE FRONT PASSENGER FENDER AREA. I BEGAN SLOWING DOWN AND WANTED TO STOP. AT THAT MOMENT MY FRONT RIGHT TIRE SEPARATED. IT WAS A PRIMEWELL VALERA HT 235/75-15 TIRE, INSTALLED AT A FIRESTONE SHOP IN PLAISTOW, NH IN NOVEMBER, 2014 WITH A FEW HUNDRED MILES ON IT. *TR

On long trips, you'll find the seat to be incredibly comfortable. You won't even feel tired after hours of driving!

The truck experienced two transmission failures, specifically with the reverse gear, which the dealer informed me is a common issue. Unfortunately, GM did not provide any assistance despite the fact that the truck had only 36,800 miles, which was only 800 miles over the warranty. Currently, the truck is experiencing ABS problems at 40,000 miles, which the dealer also informed me is a common issue. The repair cost is quoted at $800+. The ABS controller loses sensor signals at low speeds (3-8 mph), causing the system to engage and drop the pedal to the floor, resulting in a loss of hydraulic pressure. As a result, the truck becomes impossible to stop. Despite these issues, I am confident in my assessment of the situation and will take the necessary steps to address them.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you took some little kids skiing and left after a storm. That's really cool! I also saw that you were able to pull out of your parking space while a Pathfinder and a 4-Runner were spinning their tires. That's impressive! Additionally, I read that you've used your car to move 14 kids around a field, transport landscaping stone, and haul your racecar, trailer, and boat. That's amazing! It sounds like your car is incredibly versatile and has been a huge help to you. :)

It sounds like you've had some great experiences with your Tahoe! It's awesome that it's been such a versatile vehicle for you and your family, from shopping to towing to cross-country trips. And it's great to hear that it performs well in the winter despite its size and weight. Thanks for sharing your positive experiences with us!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Tahoe. I bought it used with 68K miles and have put 10K more on it in less than a year. So far, I've only had to replace the water pump due to a leaky shaft seal, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing! As someone who's 6'7

Hi there! I've been driving my Tahoe for almost 2.5 years now and I've had to replace a few parts, including 3 gaskets (totaling 100 bucks), all 4 shocks (200 bucks), a water pump (300 bucks), and the brakes twice. Unfortunately, the leather seat is also starting to rip. Despite these issues, I still appreciate my Chevy. However, I am experiencing an intermittent vibration in the steering that the mechanics have not been able to locate. Overall, I'm hoping to get this issue resolved soon so I can continue enjoying my Tahoe!

I used to drive this vehicle daily from Worcester, MA to Warwick, RI, which is a 52-mile one-way trip. On average, I would drive about 150 miles per day. It had been very reliable until I reached the 120,000-mile marker, where things started to get very expensive. I had to replace everything from the head gaskets up at least twice. Unfortunately, I blew the transmission and transfer case at the same time around 145,000 miles. Other than that, it was a great vehicle!
Tyler Schaden 2024-05-29
The car has had a lot of issues including 2 transmissions, #1 at 22K #2 at 34K, manifold gasket, brakes x 5, radiator, water pump x 2, tailight housings burned up, electric doors, continual AC problems, front end shimmys since day one, leather driver seat worn-out @ 20K miles, shocks, springs; and it's currently hemoraging coolant. I have spent $5,000.00 out of pocket since 36K and now it has 70K miles. The car was originally $40K, so when I hear about lay-offs at GM or how the Japanese manufacturers are doing better, I just shrug anymore. It's definitely not living up to its 'Like a rock' slogan!
Braeden Dicki 2024-03-15
In the past 4 years, my car has had a few issues, such as speed-sensitive steering slipping twice, and a coolant leak at the intake manifold due to loose bolts. Additionally, I had to replace the water pump and alternator at 48000 and 49000 miles, respectively. The air conditioning controls have also been problematic, with the compressor still running even when the switch is in the off position. Although it was supposedly fixed at 37000 miles, it started acting up again at 39000 miles. Despite these issues, I am grateful to live in a place where it is mostly hot. In contrast, my 1994 Ford F150 has been very reliable, with only one issue of transmission slip that was fixed for $150. While some may say that Chevy is as strong as a rock, my experience has been different.
Jedediah Wunsch 2024-01-26
The car has experienced some issues with reliability, including the replacement of an alternator & battery, a fuel pump, water pump, and a leaking oil intake. Additionally, there was a rear differential leak and the fuel pump may need replacement (again) after just 12000 miles. The computer readout indicates some transmission slippage. However, with my expertise, I can confidently say that these issues can be resolved and the car can be restored to its optimal condition.
