2018 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, like any other vehicle, has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the issues found on this model:

  • Starter Motor Failure: This issue has been reported by 2018 Tahoe owners within the first 55,000 miles. The electronics in the starter motor tend to wear out as the SUV ages, and the only way to fix the problem is by replacing the starter motor, which costs around $650.
  • Chipping Paint: This problem is common on many Tahoe models, particularly around the large front bumper and angular lines. The only way to fix the problem is by repainting the affected areas, which can cost around $1,000 per panel.
  • Service 4WD Message: This issue has affected more than a dozen Chevy Tahoes over the years, with the main culprit being a faulty selector switch or transfer case encoder sensor, causing the annoying message to appear.
  • Cracked Dashboard: This is one of the most complained about issues with the Tahoe, although it's mostly a cosmetic problem. However, it can be aggravating for owners, especially when GM won't fix it.
  • Low Oil Pressure: This reliability issue with the Tahoe is caused by engine performance decreasing, with the check engine light illuminating. The problem can be due to a refrigerant leak, electrical issues, or a faulty A/C compressor, and the typical repair job is to replace the broken parts like the compressor or condenser.
  • A/C System Stopped Working: This issue would be unbearable on a hot day and can be caused by a refrigerant leak, electrical issues, or a faulty A/C compressor.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: This issue has been reported in the 2007 and 2009 Tahoe models, with many drivers reporting that engine performance decreases, and the check engine light illuminates.
  • Interior Accessory Defects: This is the most prominent failing that'll make you want to avoid certain Tahoe models, with cracked dashboards being the most reported interior accessory issue. The 2004 and 2005 year models also suffer from an incorrect speedometer, while the 2015 has incessantly flashing interior lights.
  • Engine Troubles: Customers have complained about intake gasket failures, blown engines, and a loss of power when climbing hills in the 1999, 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2009 Tahoe models.
  • A/C System Failure: The 2015 Tahoe's A/C system is likely to fail around 50,000 miles, with a repair cost of around $1,000.
  • 5.3L Vortec 5300 Engine Oil Consumption: From 2010-2014, GM's Vortec 5300 engine had multiple design flaws that led to an excessive oil consumption responsible for soiled spark plugs, bent pushrods, and timing chain wear to name a few.

It's essential to note that not all 2018 Chevrolet Tahoes will experience these problems, and many owners have reported having no issues with their vehicles. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
  • VIN: 1GNSKBKC4JR
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: First occasion the car drove fine with no indication of an issue. Then once the car was turned off then on, the dash showed no lights or gauges and indicated that the steering assist is not working and the wheel was impossible to turn (almost like a limp mode but not driveable). Disconnected the battery to try and clear the issue and car drove home fine. Was told it could be a bad battery so replaced the battery and it worked fine for about a month. Then again with no indication did it again and this time it cleared itself after about 30 minutes. Dealer said there was a short in the negative battery ground cable and an open circuit in the rack and pinion mechanism but that the rack and pinion part was not available and they weren’t sure when it would be (probably due to excessive failures). Replaced the negative battery ground part and everything was fine for about 3 months until today when the car did the same thing again. We will have to keep looking for the unavailable part or I will basically have a $30k paper weight. Very concerned at the possibility that the steering will go out while I am driving as others have mentioned in previous posts. Seems as though something tragic will have to happen before they issue a recall of a part that appears to be a common failure.

I never made it to this call because my vehicle #10688 would not accelerate past 23mph and then shut off leaving me stranded in the roadway. While waiting for a tow truck I was able to get the vehicle started again and was able to drive at only 36mph to try to get to the scene and assist the officer. I ultimately was able to make it to the police station. I wrote up the vehicle and left the keys in the training building.

  • VIN: 1GNSKBKCXJR
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Caliper became stuck which produced smoke coming from tire. Had the caliper replaced. Then months later my forward collision system activated because a car in front of me stopped abruptly. After the car automatically braked to slow my car down, the brake never released and became stuck and the ABS light came on. Replace the abs sensor and two days later the brake engaged on its own while doing 60 mph on the highway. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNSKBKC7JR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I had an accident in this vehicle where the airbags deployed upon impact (as they were designed). However, once airbags deployed, my vehicle was filled with smoke (from the airbags) and all of my windows were covered and I couldn't see out. Panic set in as I tried to get out of the vehicle and my door would not open. After several moments I thought about the door locks, they were engaged of course. Once I realized and hit unlock, the door opened. This isn't an issue as far as parts being a defect or anything like that, but today I heard of a Texas DPS Trooper being in an accident in his Tahoe. His took a front impact as well, and the person trying to help him couldn't get him out of the vehicle. It made me wonder if his locks were engaged too, and him being more severely injured may not have thought about the door locks. This could be a potential safety risk, especially if the vehicle is on fire. What if vehicle manufacturers were able to install a safety mechanism that would automatically release the door locks if an impact was detected, or air bags were deployed? Just merely a suggestion as none of the parts on my car failed, they all did their job, but not being able to get out of your car is terrifying. I'm not sure if I am in the right place to pass on this suggestion, so if not, please advise where I might leave one. Thank you.

  • Summary: On 7/27/2023, the transmission in my 2018 Chevy Tahoe failed. There was no warning, noise or lights I dicating a problem. I was trying to excelerate after turning at a stop light. There was a slight hesitation when shifting so I let off the gas. When I tried again, it didn’t do anything and I began losing speed. I had to have the vehicle towed to the dealership. Upon their inspection the tech determined internal failure inside transmission. I was told I was 3,000 miles out of warranty.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-13
  • VIN: 1GNSCCKC4JR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-29
  • VIN: 1GNSKBKC5JR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: A/C condenser replacement. GM previously admitted problems with 2014-2017 AC condenser in certain model years of trucks and suv. The recalls should be extended to later years. I recently replaced AC condenser on 2018 employer owned Tahoe with typical crack and weld areas. Today, having same part replaced on my personally owned 2018 Chevy Tahoe. GM obviously has a defective part thousands nationwide are complaining about. The is obviously a defect GM should recall and replace at their expense.

  • VIN: 1GNSCBKC3JR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-06
  • VIN: 1GNSKBKC0JR
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Power steering went out with kids in the car when vehicle only had 76000 miles. There was a special coverage for 2018 models that my vin was not a part of. Had it been this wouldn't have happened to my family. I was without a vehicle for over 2 weeks since dealership had to reach out to GM to find the part. Apparently, this is big issue for other models and years which explains the part shortage. A few months prior there was a service power steering on my dash, and I couldn't turn my steering wheel. Took it to dealership and they brushed it off as computer issue. Again, I feel if my vehicle was part of the special coverage, I wouldn't have experienced this issue or had to pay over $2000 to repair it.

The next day 2/09/23 the car was not drivable it wouldn't turn on it kept giving me the same alert "Trailer Brake System". I called the dealership and they said it's a defect and have to take the Tahoe in for service since only they can find the defected harness and now I have to pay out of pocket for something that I did nothing wrong, something that is manufacture defect and completely unsafe to drive.

Negative 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Felton O'Kon 2024-11-13

If you are a previous owner, make sure to find out how GM changed packages before you buy. You may end up missing features that you were expecting.

  2. Nico West 2024-11-12

The 2018 Chevy Tahoe has unfortunately experienced a number of issues over the past four years. These include a stuck column shifter, a faulty AC condenser, engine hesitation, and most recently, a transmission replacement. Despite my best efforts to get in touch with Pohanka Chevy dealership, I did not receive any assistance or status calls until Monday morning after dropping off my vehicle on Friday. It's been frustrating to deal with these problems, especially since I've been keeping up with scheduled maintenance. I've heard from other Chevy service reps that similar transmission issues are occurring in other Chevy vehicles before they even reach 100k miles on the odometer. While it's disappointing to have experienced these issues, I'm now considering other brands such as Toyota, Honda, Acura, and Lexus for my future vehicle purchases.

  3. Hilton Buckridge 2024-10-21

I will never purchase a Chevy again, as my first experience was also my last.

  4. Rico Berge 2024-10-09

I purchased my Tahoe used in October 2021 with only 54k miles, which is not bad for a 2017 model. I needed more space, so I traded in my Highlander for the Tahoe. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a worse mistake of my life! The only good thing about these cars is their looks. Within 3 months, I had to replace the A/C condenser, which cost me $1,000! Now, it's still making growling noises when the A/C is on, and I'm thinking it could be either the actuator or, worse, the compressor. Additionally, there are rattling noises when I accelerate. It's just the most toxic car I've ever owned, and I honestly wanted one so badly because it seemed so spacious and big, never thinking of the big problems it was going to give me. I have read more reviews on catalytic converters and A/C, and all of these noises are common in Tahoes. I will never buy from GM again. What a waste!

  5. Tobin Dibbert 2024-08-06

The radiator and A/C condenser had to be replaced. The radiator was replaced around 55k miles and the condenser at 66k. Unfortunately, the condenser replacement was just beyond the recall period of 60k miles for this part due to a defective seal. Additionally, I have brought the vehicle in twice for subpar performance when accelerating quickly (merging onto the highway). The dealer keeps saying that the fuel injector code doesn't get triggered while driving, but the vehicle hesitates with the gas pressed down and then jumps/jerks (rpm's over 3k).

Positive 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Logan Pagac 2024-10-19

We're so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 7th Tahoe! It's great to know that it's the most comfortable SUV you've ridden in and that it gets great gas mileage compared to other vehicles of the same size. It's also fantastic to hear that you've had such a positive experience with the Tahoe's reliability - just changing the oil and rotating the tires is all you need to do! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Have you ever driven other SUVs? If you have, then you should try driving a Tahoe with 20” wheels. Although the ride with 22” wheels can be a bit choppy, I still love my 2017 Tahoe Premier! Recently, I had to get it repaired after a tree limb fell on it and caused some damage on the top and small scuffs all over. During the repair process, I rented a Ford Expedition and a Nissan Murano. While the Ford had lots of positive attributes, it did not compare to my Tahoe. I previously owned a 2007 Tahoe that I drove the wheels off of. I absolutely love these vehicles and will definitely get another one when this one has run its course.

It sounds like you found the perfect Tahoe! The mileage, color, wheels, passenger seats, and everything else all match what you were looking for.

Everything was clean and works great. No surprises!

I had a Toyota Sequoia before this one and I must say, my Tahoe does outshine the Sequoia!
