The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

  • VIN: 1GNSCBKC4LR
  • Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: My engine light keeps coming on randomly. When this occurs, the dashboard lights blinks and I get a " steering assist" error message. Once this happens it is really hard for me to steer AND I lose acceleration as well. Imagine losing acceleration in the middle of an intersection. Also, I noticed my temperature gauge moves up & down as well. I have taken it to the dealership each time it happens and they are saying they haven't been able to replicate the issue. The engine light only stays on for a few hours or days and the problem goes away once the engine light is off. From my research, this was the same exact problems the 2015 Chevy Tahoes had as well. I don't understand why they cannot figure why I am having this issue. The engine light errors code listed alot of issues yet they still can't diagnose a problem. They have updated the system and checked all wire connections per the dealership. This is my third or fourth time complaining about this issue and this is the dealership's third or fourth time trying to diagnose the problem but they keep telling me they can't.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-20
  • VIN: 1GNSKAKC9LR
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: In August 2021 I got a system light for a Saftey Restraint System, aka airbag issue. This system was going on and off sometimes as little as 5 seconds apart and then sometimes would go off for a bit then back on. I live on an Island and there is no dealer here I had to buy somewhere else. There is a mechanic here that does work on vehicles and per the dealership, I bought the car from I was told if the mechanic there can do a software update which is what he thought the problem was, then I should do that. I took this advice and did it. When we drove off the light was off and fixed for about 30 minutes, then the light and safety restrain error came back on. This time remaining on. I took it back to the mechanic and got two error codes. I have since tried to contact GM and been dealing with them for 3 weeks with no assurances if I pay to get my car to a dealship to fix I would get my money back for their error. I also came across and article about investigations into 750k 2020 & 2021 GM models including 2020 Chevy Tahoe for airbags not working. As a consumer, I should have the right to be able to be reimbursed for costs accruded to me to get my vehicle where I'm forced to get it fixed.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors, LLC
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.
  • Consequence: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
  • Consequence: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

Negative 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Dell Bailey 2025-02-11

After 50,000 miles, both front and rear shocks were found to be faulty in my 2018 Tahoe Premier, which cost $4,000 to replace. Despite acknowledging the issue, Chevrolet did not take any action after researching for 5 weeks. Additionally, my previous car, a 2016 Suburban, had a transmission failure at 100,000 miles. It is clear that these cars are not made to a high standard.

  2. Jaron Brakus 2025-01-24

I have experienced several issues with my new vehicle, which have required warranty work. Despite the dealership's attempts to fix the problems, they have unfortunately resurfaced. I am currently experiencing issues with the 10 speed transmission, parking sensors, blind spot monitoring and theft deterrent systems. As a result, I have decided that this will be my last new GM purchase and I am looking forward to the end of my lease.

  3. Emanuel Schmeler 2025-01-07

We purchased our brand new Tahoe for $70,000, thinking it was the cream of the crop with its 6.2 engine and 10-speed transmission. At first, we loved it and thought we could go fast in it. We bought it in May and enjoyed rolling down the windows and feeling the breeze. However, when June hit, it got hot in there and the A/C seemed to make it even hotter. After calling the dealer, we found out that they had forgotten to put refrigerant in it, but it was a simple fix. Things were going well until one day, the back door seal fell off. It was frustrating to find out that Chevrolet had forgotten the clips on the door seal. Additionally, two body bolts had worn holes in the carpet. Thankfully, the local dealer was able to fix these issues for us. After five months of no problems, we fell back in love with our $70,000 investment. Unfortunately, one day, as I backed out of the driveway and put it in drive, nothing happened. I calmly shifted to neutral and tried again, but it slammed into drive with a big thud, causing me to hit the steering wheel. I was worried that I was going crazy, but I gathered some witnesses to confirm that I wasn't. Although Chevrolet thought it never happened to them, it happened to me five plus times a week. Sadly, this will be my last Chevy product. I can buy the same quality for half the price from another manufacturer. If you have $70,000 to spend, the new Tahoe is still a great choice!

  4. Douglas Lebsack 2025-01-05

General Motors must be held accountable for the faulty fuel management system that damaged your engine. As a customer, you deserve better treatment and prompt resolution of your issues. It is unacceptable that General Motors gave you the runaround for almost 4 months and then refused to reimburse your costs. Your safety and satisfaction should be their top priority. I urge General Motors to take responsibility for their mistakes and provide you with the compensation and support you deserve.

Love love Chevy and trucks until our lifters failed. Apparently, this is a common problem with Chevy motors. It seems that there is something in the computer that has it run on 4 cylinders often. I would like to suggest that everyone should consider this when buying one because now we are spending over $5,000 for new lifters and a delete kit………

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Tahoe! It sounds like you've had some experience with Suburbans and Tahoes in the past, but decided to try out a Toyota Highlander for a while. It's great that you found your way back to the Tahoe and that it's meeting your needs perfectly with the extra room.

This is a great family or all-purpose vehicle. I love the room and storage capacity. However, the loading height is a little too high, which makes it more difficult than other SUVs. The gas mileage and turning radius are what I expected for a large SUV.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2020 Tahoe! It sounds like you're really happy with it, even though the 2021 model has a few more features. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!
