2005 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

Based on the information gathered from various sources, here are some common problems reported by owners of the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe:

  1. Failed ABS Systems:
    • Owners have experienced malfunctions with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), leading to ABS warning lights or brakes locking unexpectedly. General Motors (GM) has issued recalls for 1999 to 2002 and 2005 Tahoe models due to various ABS issues, including corrosion within the braking systems and missing push-rod retainers.
  2. Cracked Dashboards:
    • Models manufactured between 2007 and 2013 have been prone to dashboard cracks due to stress on the plastic material caused by overtightened bolts, lack of relief points, and exposure to sunlight. While this issue does not directly affect the vehicle's performance, it impacts its visual appeal.
  3. Dirty Throttle Body:
    • The throttle body in the Chevy Tahoe tends to accumulate carbon deposits over time, affecting airflow into the engine. This buildup can lead to low idling, rough running, and stalling. Regular cleaning with a carburetor cleaner is recommended to prevent drivability issues associated with a dirty throttle body.
  4. Oil Leaks:
    • Oil leaks have been reported in the area around the oil pan, often caused by issues with the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal. Repairing the oil pan gasket involves a moderately involved process, including removing the cross member and front differential in four-wheel-drive vehicles. Fixing a leaking rear main seal requires removing the transmission, making it a more significant repair job.
  5. Intake Gasket Issues:
    • The intake gasket, made of plastic and rubber, can break, allowing unmeasured air into the intake and causing drivability issues like rough engine running and check engine lights. Replacing the intake gasket involves removing the upper plenum and disconnecting fuel lines.

These common problems with the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe highlight issues related to safety systems, interior components, engine performance, and oil leaks. Addressing these problems promptly through proper maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:REAR/OTHER
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.
  • Consequence: A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT OPEN THE GUIDE LOOP, REMOVE A PORTION OF THE LOOP, AND THEN THE REMAINING TWO SIDES SHOULD BE FOLDED OVER AND SECURED WITH A RETAINER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 21, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, OR HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493.

Negative 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

This vehicle has had several issues, including a leak in the radiator and transmission after 3 years of use, a malfunctioning instrument cluster, and a faulty rear window motor. Despite being an expensive vehicle to purchase and maintain, it is still enjoyable to drive. However, with over 140k miles and being over 5 years old, it has become quite loose. In comparison, I have owned an all-wheel-drive Passat which handled better in the snow and did not have as many issues. Overall, while this vehicle has had its challenges, it still has its positive aspects.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Tahoe since December 2004. Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with both radios overheating since day one. Recently, I've also been experiencing some transmission slipping, which can be frustrating. I've taken it to the dealership, but they haven't been able to find any problems. Despite this, I'm still hopeful that we can find a solution to this issue. Thank you for listening!

This car takes the bumps very well. If you work 5 minutes away from your house or just don't drive a lot, this is a perfect car to drive. However, I regret not buying the Honda Pilot instead of this. It handles like a big wide cruise.

This vehicle has had some issues, requiring 5 trips to the shop. However, it struggles on hills when towing and the four-wheel drive could be improved. Additionally, the back seats are uncomfortable and the third row lacks leg room.

  5. Stanford Ziemann 2024-01-19

I have experienced several issues with my vehicle, including transmission, wiring, steering column, cluster, and seat adjustments. Additionally, the seats are uncomfortable for long drives, and the armrest in the second row prevents the seats from being pushed all the way back. Despite the initial price of 54K and my purchase at 31K, I am disappointed with my vehicle. I am considering exploring other options, such as the Sequoia.

Positive 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2005 Tahoe LS with only 60k miles! It sounds like you really fell in love with it. This versatile vehicle is perfect for both family and work, and even looks great when you're taking your wife out on a date in a classy part of town. Despite its low MPG (15.5 no matter what), the 5.3 engine was extremely reliable and made driving a pleasure. You even took it across the country multiple times and never felt fatigued after 12 hour days. With all its features, it's no wonder you never got tired of owning it. It's understandable that you miss it after trading it in for a more fuel-efficient car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I've been waiting a long time to be able to buy a Tahoe, and I'm not disappointed. However, the CD player stopped working recently and OnStar did not work when new. I'm happy to say that the dealer service and satisfaction has been excellent and way more than I expected.

  3. Andre Gerhold 2024-11-15

I love my new truck! As someone who is 5 ft tall, I was worried about driving it, but it's been a breeze. While it could be a bit better on gas and exterior styling, overall I'm really happy with it.

  4. Javon Collins 2024-11-14

If you're considering getting an SUV, the Tahoe is the one to get. Trust me, no other car I've ever been in can even compare to it.

  5. Ahmad Quitzon 2024-11-04

No problems so far! Your family car is great, with easy in and out access. It feels very safe, which is especially important with kids. OnStar is one of the best features, and the air conditioner is amazing! You even added 20-inch wheels and tinted the driver and passenger windows, as well as a DVD player for the kids. Your car is truly awesome and looks amazing with the tinting and larger wheels. This ride rocks!
