2016 Chevrolet Tahoe problems
The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe problems
The 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, a full-size SUV, is known for its powerful V-8 engine, impressive independent four-wheel suspension, and ample space with three rows of seats. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported.
- Service 4WD message: This issue is caused by a faulty selector switch or transfer case encoder sensor, which triggers a warning message on the dashboard. This problem has affected more than a dozen Chevrolet Tahoes over the years.
- Cracked dashboard: This is a cosmetic issue that has been reported by many Tahoe owners. The one-piece dashboard design, combined with overtightened bolts and constant exposure to sunlight, can lead to extreme deterioration and cracks in the plastic material. While it does not directly impact the vehicle's performance, it can affect the vehicle's visual appeal.
- Low oil pressure: Some Tahoe owners have reported a decrease in engine performance due to low oil pressure, accompanied by an illuminating check engine light. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a faulty oil pump or a damaged engine block.
- Failed ABS systems: Countless owners have reported malfunctions with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), causing ABS warning lights to appear or locking unexpectedly. This can be a safety concern, as the ABS system is designed to prevent brakes from seizing in hard stop situations or slippery conditions. General Motors has issued recalls for certain Tahoe models due to ABS issues.
- In-car electronics: Issues with the infotainment system, including the audio, GPS, phone, rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, and head-up display, have been reported by Tahoe owners. Problems include the screen changing on its own, clicking noises, and loss of navigation voice.
- Defective Engine Lifters: Chevrolet Tahoes equipped with 5.3L L84 V-8 engines have experienced issues with improperly functioning lifters, which can cause ticking and banging noises, misfires, sputtering, loss of power, total engine failure, and hesitation while driving. A class action lawsuit has been filed against General Motors, although no recalls have been issued yet.
- Dirty throttle body: Over time, the throttle body in the Tahoe can collect carbon, impacting airflow into the engine. This can cause the engine to idle low, run rough, and stall. Regular maintenance and cleaning of the throttle body can help prevent this issue.
These common problems should be considered when purchasing a used 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-03
- VIN: 1GNSKCKC2GR
- Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I have a 2016 Chevy Tahoe LTZ. It has the air ride suspension. I need all new shocks and struts and a new air ride air suspension pump. Reported this issue when the vehicle had 60-66k miles on it. I was never told what was wrong until about 2 weeks ago. The grand total of replacing these issues is over 6k. I called Chevy/GMC theres nothing they will do as it’s out of any warranty even though the problem has been reported/documented way before it hit 84k. Jim Shorkey Chevy is a joke and Boby Rahal has no clue what warranty they’re selling people. This makes for a very loud, very rough ride that’s hard to control going any speed. There was also a valve that would squeak when it went from the V4 to the V8. In order to fix that i needed a whole new exhaust and muffler. Chevy would not cover any of this even though there is warranty for emissions through Chevy I can’t remember the year but i know the miles were 90k. I don’t have that on the car and for whatever reason an exhaust and muffler are not considered emissions even though if there was a hole or malfunction with them I wouldn’t pass the emissions here in PA. Make that make sense. All of these problem were reported within the year of buying this car back in 2020. I didn’t get a diagnosis for these problems until 2023 and 30k miles later. I did and still do have issues with the brake even though the vacuum pump was replaced back when I bought it. My antenna also leaked and I had to pay for that out of pocket. I’d love to stay with a gmc/Chevy but if I’m going to constantly have to pour money into it I’ll never go back.
2016 Chevrolet Tahoe recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe.
- Manufacturer: General Motors, LLC
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT
- Summary: General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.
- Consequence: A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:WHEEL SPEED SENSOR
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
- Consequence: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.
- Consequence: As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Tahoe Police Pursuit and Special-Service vehicles. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.
- Consequence: If the pretensioner cable becomes fatigued or breaks, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the pretensioner cable and seat side-shield, free of charge. The recall began June 19, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18156.

- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test.

- Consequence: Inadequate welds may allow the control arm to separate from the bushing, compromising steering and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left and right front upper control arms and realign the vehicle, free of charge. The recall began on May 18, 2016. Until the repairs have been made, owners are advised not to drive their vehicles. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 42190.

The radio and bluetooth not working together has been a persistent issue. During a trip through the mountains in a rainstorm, the radio and mapping system went black and did not come back on until the next day. Despite this, I was able to navigate my way with the help of my husband over the phone. On another trip from Tennessee to Florida during a hurricane, the radio and mapping system went black again when I answered a call, but came back on after the call ended. Towards the end of the trip, the bluetooth stopped working with my iPhone, making it impossible to make calls while tethered to the vehicle.

I'm glad to hear that you love the Tahoe! It sounds like you found the perfect vehicle for your needs. The brakes are definitely impressive and it's great to hear that you feel safe while driving it. I understand that it may be too big for you as a woman, but it's great that you're able to give it to your husband. It's also reassuring to hear that you haven't had any problems or recalls in the two years you've had it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Great to hear that you found a safe family car for your granddaughter! It's wonderful that you were able to trade in your 09 model and get a 2016 one for only half the price. It's great to support American products!

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you had a great ride and enjoyed the space!

I had a 2014 Escalade that I enjoyed, but I must say that I like the 2016 Tahoe even better. It has better gas mileage and handles very nicely, providing great road comfort.

I recently traded in my beloved 2012 Tahoe with 115k miles for a new 2016 Tahoe. While I had high expectations for the new model, I have been a little disappointed with the electronics and command response. Unfortunately, there is an annoying delay in response with all commands, including the door locks, which take longer than they should. Additionally, changing radio channels with the steering wheel controls has a much longer delay than in the 2012 Tahoe. The key remote needs to be simplified, as the rear window and rear door buttons look too similar, which can be confusing to operate. I suggest using clear labels such as 'W' for window and 'D' for door. Also, the computer has the motor revving up to unreasonable rpms before shifting, which can be embarrassing when leaving a stop light. Perhaps my standards have been elevated owning a BMW, but I believe Chevy can do better. Overall, I hope Chevy can improve these issues in future models.

I purchased my 2016 Tahoe almost 2 years ago and unfortunately, I have had to invest almost $6,000 into it. Despite this, the value of the car has decreased significantly and I will lose at least 8k if I decide to sell it. I had to replace the transmission and brakes, which cost me over $800. As someone who is not knowledgeable about cars, I found it frustrating not knowing what other issues were present. Although it has been a money pit, I must admit that the car runs well when it is running. The seating is comfortable, except for the third row, which is a bit cramped. The car gets about 18 mpg in town and 22 on the highway and rides well even at high speeds. Unfortunately, the car keeps falling apart and now I need a new catalytic converter after just spending $300 on Ty rods and something else 3 weeks ago. Overall, owning this car has been a bit of a disappointment. However, I am looking forward to my next car purchase and hope to find a reliable and loving car that will not break my heart.

Overall, it is a great truck. However, I experienced an issue with the sensor which caused my seat to vibrate while driving. I will be paying $3800.00 out of pocket to fix it.

The LTZ fully loaded model I own has some areas that could be improved. The power side step doesn't work consistently, but the cruise control is reliable. The vehicle has a longer stopping distance and acceleration time than I would prefer, but it still performs adequately in most weather conditions. The third row is not very spacious and the power seats don't offer much storage, but the folding seats can be operated from the rear access. The car is quite large, which can make parking difficult, but the back-up camera is helpful. The front collision warning system can be overly sensitive at times. Overall, while there are some areas for improvement, I am confident in the vehicle's performance and safety features.

My LTZ has been an absolute joy to drive for the first 33,000 miles. Despite the warranties having expired, I have complete confidence in its performance. While I did experience some intermittent phantom issues with the infotainment system after an oil change in 2021, I chose not to take it to the dealership as I couldn't guarantee the same issue would show itself. I have also noticed that my lumbar deflates after driving for 10 minutes, but I have found a simple solution to this minor inconvenience. Although I have experienced a few issues, I still believe that this luxury vehicle should function without any problems, given the price I paid for it. I was informed that the infotainment system simply needs a firmware update, which I am more than happy to pay for. Additionally, I was told that a bolt needed to be replaced due to a manufacturing issue, which was promptly resolved for a reasonable fee. While the front light did start leaking and fill with condensation a year after I purchased it, I am grateful that the warranty covered the repair. As I approach 36,000 miles, I am confident that my vehicle will continue to perform exceptionally well and I have no doubt that it will be worth the investment in the long run.
