The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

THEY GAVE ME A 300 MI WARRANTY (ALL I NEEDED TO GET BACK TO TUCSON) AND LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER I GOT HOME, THE FUEL PUMP WENT OUT. SO I LET THE TRUCK SIT FOR 2 MONTHS BEFORE I GOT IT FIXED. DEALERSHIP HAD INDICATED SOME WORN FRONT END PARTS NEEDING REPLACEMENT SO I HAD THAT DONE ALONG WITH A FRONT END ALIGNMENT FOLLOWING. DIDN'T HELP. FOUND MANY DISCUSSIONS WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES ON THE INTERNET AND MOST INDICATED REPLACING THE STEERING EVO SENSOR AS THE CURE. I REPLACED THAT PART AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM. THE SENSATION OF THE LOSS OF STEERING MIDCORNER IS AT THE LEAST A LITTLE DISCONCERTING AND AT THE MOST COULD LEAD TO AN OVER-REACTION AND A SEVERE CRASH! WITH AS MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE AS I FOUND I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS COULD HAVE BEEN LET GO AND NOT CALLED TO MY ATTENTION BY THE COMPANY. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THE NHTSA WEB SITE HAD POSTED A REMEDY: REMOVE THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND CLEAN THE WHEEL SPEED SURFACE, GREASE THE MOUNTING SURFACE, REINSTALL THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND CHECK THE PEAK-TO-PEAK OUTPUT VOLTAGE TO ENSURE THE WHEEL SPEED SIGNAL IS WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS. I TOOK A COPY OF THE REMEDY TO MY MECHANIC, WHO PROMPTLY FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS AND NOTIFIED ME THAT THE REMEDY FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I CONTACTED AN NHTSA CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AND ASKED IF AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN LAUNCHED REGARDING THIS DEFECT AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS NO INVESTIGATION AS OF YET. WITH ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS I HAVE BEEN READING REGARDING THIS PROBLEM, MY QUESTION IS: WHY HASN'T THIS ISSUE OF ABS SYSTEM FAILURE IN 1997 TAHOES BEEN ADDRESSED? IF THE PROBLEM IS OCCURRING IN VEHICLES (REGARDLESS OF THE YEAR MODEL) AND THE RECALL HAS BEEN LIMITED TO ONLY A FEW YEAR MODELS, DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE ABS SYSTEM FAILURE ON THE 1997 TAHOE IS NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN REGARDING SAFETY? I AM REQUESTING THE BOARD TO LOOK AGAIN AT THE ABS COMPLAINTS AND INITIATE AN INVESTIGATION SO THAT GM WILL TAKE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE ABS SYSTEM. - Summary: ONGOING PROBLEM WITH BRAKE LIGHT FAILURES. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. I ORDERED THE TAHOE THROUGH MY LOCAL DEALER IN 1997. IT ONLY HAS 84,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS NOT BEEN ABUSED IN ANY WAY. SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. THE BRAKE LIGHTS KEEP GOING OUT. THE DEALER CANNOT EXPLAIN IT. I RECEIVED A TICKET ON FEBRUARY 15, 2008 FOR NOT HAVING ANY BRAKE LIGHTS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH NEEDS RESOLUTION. After 12 years of owning our truck, I decided to make some performance upgrades when I returned from Iraq in January. With the addition of dual exhaust (Flowmasters) and a K&N Cold Air Intake, the changes were unbelievable and immediately noticeable. Although the gas mileage is what was expected, it doesn't seem as bad as what is on paper. The interior may be a little plain, but the possibilities for add-ons are endless. The seats are large and comfortable, and the truck has proven to be very reliable. Despite being rear-ended three times in 12 years, the most recent incident being just two weeks ago when an F250 collided with us at 50 mph while we were stopped for traffic with my newly adopted 7-month-old daughter in the back, we were all okay. This truck has been through a lot, but it has always held up and proven to be a safe and dependable vehicle.

If you decide to sell your Hummer, keep in mind that if dealers consider it a hot item, it probably is. It's worth noting that any issues that arise are likely due to the condition it was exposed to, such as the plastic tabs on the interior that were designed for ease of assembly rather than endurance. To improve performance, consider installing Baer disk brakes on all four wheels and replacing the injectors. The cost of repairs is much less than the interest on a new loan, making it an exceptional recreational second vehicle.

I now live in Alaska and drive a lot to fish and hunt. Unfortunately, before driving up, the intake manifold gasket started leaking, which cost me $400. Additionally, something in the power steering went out, costing me $150. On top of that, the check engine light for the EGR exhaust valve came on three times, but I was able to clean it myself and replace it. Despite all of this, my car has now clocked 68,000 miles and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Call me crazy!

I bought this SUV used. At first, I was worried it would be too big for me to drive, but once I got used to it, that's all it took. My husband calls it the Taco, and it's been the best SUV we've ever had. It runs great, has plenty of room, and is comfortable on the road. I would definitely recommend this SUV to everyone!

This has been a great truck! I drive it off-road about 4 weeks a year and in the snow during winter in Colorado. It handles great on both wet and dry pavement. While it could get better mileage, it's a full-sized SUV, so what can you expect?

It's impressive that it's been so dependable for you, even with over 116,500 miles on it. I hope that getting new shocks will help with the bouncing you've been experiencing. It's great to hear that your 1997 Tahoe rides and handles better than your dad's 2001 Expedition Eddie Bauer, and that it's also quieter and more comfortable. Where should I begin? I received mine on 11-24-1998 and if I wasn't a very mechanical guy, I would have gone mad by now. It could have been a great vehicle if it didn't break down all the time. Here's a list of things that broke: fuel pump at 40K, intake manifold gaskets twice, transmission at 80K, front rotors that continually warp - making it an inadequately-braked vehicle, water pump, radiator, interior plastic parts galore - sun visor vanity mirrors R/L, right side electric mirror, alternator three times, rear cargo door strap, rear speaker, paint on hood and top shot, dog tracking problem, grill plastic parts that are all breaking, wiper pulse board. I am a bit remiss to not remember everything. If I ever sell it, I will have everything corrected.

The reliability of this vehicle has been quite low in the past. However, after experiencing a fuel pump issue at 33K, a corroded water hose quick connect at 40K, a dead transmission at 55K, a broken driver door handle at 60K, an alternator problem at 65K, and a windshield wiper circuit board issue at 70K, I had everything replaced. I even had a Delco battery leak acid that destroyed the battery cables, and the parts counter at the Chevy dealer recommended that I switch to another brand because he had a room full of leaking batteries and Delco did nothing to redesign to prevent the problem. Despite all of these issues, I am happy to report that the vehicle now runs great and I plan to keep it for some time as a tow vehicle for my boat.

I have generally liked this vehicle. City gas mileage has been in the 11 to 12 range. I love its room and versatility. However, the major sore spot is reliability. I have had to replace an alternator, brakes (twice), two sets of tires, and now I require a new transmission. Despite this, I still appreciate the vehicle's positive aspects. My next vehicle will probably be a Toyota.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with Chevy cars. I learned to drive in a Suburban and have been a Chevy fan ever since. I had a K5 blazer and absolutely loved it! I also liked the Tahoe and ended up getting a 97 model in 2001 with only 60k miles on it. However, I did have some trouble with it. Unfortunately, the alternator went out as soon as I drove it off the lot, and I had to replace the brakes and rotors, rebuild the transmission, replace the water pump, battery, starter, and even had some issues with the windshield wipers. The transmission cooler was built into the radiator and sprung a leak, causing all sorts of problems, and the head gasket started leaking, all before hitting 88k miles! Despite these issues, I still believe that Chevy cars are great. However, I do recommend reading reviews before making a purchase. Thanks for listening!
