1997 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-03
  • VIN: 3GNEK18R6VG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE AT TAX TIME IN 2014. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY TRUCK. IT'S A LIFTED, AUTOMATIC 4WD WITH FRONT AND BACK TOWING PKG, AND PERFECT FOR THE MOUNTAIN ROADS AND SNOW WHERE I LIVE. LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER I BOUGHT IT I HAD TO TRAVEL 300 MILES TO TUCSON AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT, DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO GET IT FIXED SO I TRANSFERRED MY JOB AND STARTED OVER IN TUCSON. AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION WITH THE DEALER, THEY FINALLY HAD THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT. THEY GAVE ME A 300 MI WARRANTY (ALL I NEEDED TO GET BACK TO TUCSON) AND LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER I GOT HOME, THE FUEL PUMP WENT OUT. SO I LET THE TRUCK SIT FOR 2 MONTHS BEFORE I GOT IT FIXED. I CAME ACROSS ENOUGH MONEY TO GET ME AND MY CHILDREN OUT OF DV SITUATION AND PROCEEDED TO DRIVE THEM TO MICHIGAN. MADE IT TO OK AND IT WAS COMPLETELY BURNED OUT AGAIN. I ALWAYS HAVE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DONE, I DO UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE AN AUTOMATIC 4WD, I DON'T PUSH MY VEHICLE TOO HARD. I MADE IT TO MICHIGAN BUT HERE IT IS WINTER AND I HAVE A TRUCK IN OK THAT I LOVE AND AM STILL PAYING FOR AND CAN'T USE, AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE TRANSMISSION KEEPS GOING OUT AND IN THE MEAN TIME I HAVE 2 KIDS AND ONE ON THE WAY AND CAN'T AFFORD TO FIX MY TRUCK OR GET A NEW ONE. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY TRANSMISSION, BUT CANNOT FIND ONE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING I NEED TO KNOW OR CAN DO. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-08-01
  • VIN: 1GNEK13R3VJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY
  • Summary: THE POWER WINDOW ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WILL STOP WORKING ALL OF A SUDDEN. IT IS NOT ALL OF THE TIME, BUT SOMETIMES, WHEN I HAVE THE WINDOW DOWN, AND I PUSH THE POWER SWITCH TO CLOSE OR OPEN THE WINDOW IT WILL NOT WORK. THIS COULD LEAD TO A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM, IF FOR SOME REASON I AM UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR AND THEN THE WINDOW WILL NOT GO DOWN. WE LIVE IN MICHIGAN AND YOU RECENTLY RECALLED VEHICLES BECAUSE OF A PROBLEM WITH THE MASTER POWER WINDOW SWITCH CAUSING FIRES IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR, WHICH ENDED UP MELTING AND/OR BURNING THE DOOR. THERE MUST BE CORROSION OF THE WIRING IN MY VEHICLE THAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM WITH MY WINDOW. I KNOW THAT YOUR RECALL WAS NOT FOR THE SAME YEAR AS MY VEHICLE, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND I DON'T WANT TO END UP HAVING MY CAR DOOR CATCH ON FIRE, ESPECIALLY IF ME OR MY FAMILY ARE IN IT, OR IF IT IS PARKED IN OUR GARAGE IT COULD BURN OUR ENTIRE HOUSE DOWN. WHEN WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS BRAND NEW, AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO OTHER OWNERS. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-07-18
  • VIN: 1GNEK13R6VJ
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: POWER STEERING INPUT/EFFORT HAD BECAME ERRATIC CAUSING INCREASED EFFORT OR WORSE, OVERSTEERING MIDWAY THROUGH TURNS. FIRST NOTICED THIS PROBLEM LAST FALL AT WINTER TIRE CHANGEOVER. I INITIALLY BLAMED IT ON ICY ROADS BUT THEN NOTICED IT ON OBVIOUSLY NON ICY ROADS AS WELL. OCCURRED JUST OCCASIONALLY AT FIRST. I KEPT BLAMING TIRES BUT THIS SPRING WHEN I CHANGED BACK OVER TO MY SUMMER TIRES THE PROBLEM DID NOT GO AWAY. DEALERSHIP HAD INDICATED SOME WORN FRONT END PARTS NEEDING REPLACEMENT SO I HAD THAT DONE ALONG WITH A FRONT END ALIGNMENT FOLLOWING. DIDN'T HELP. FOUND MANY DISCUSSIONS WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES ON THE INTERNET AND MOST INDICATED REPLACING THE STEERING EVO SENSOR AS THE CURE. I REPLACED THAT PART AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM. THE SENSATION OF THE LOSS OF STEERING MIDCORNER IS AT THE LEAST A LITTLE DISCONCERTING AND AT THE MOST COULD LEAD TO AN OVER-REACTION AND A SEVERE CRASH! WITH AS MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE AS I FOUND I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS COULD HAVE BEEN LET GO AND NOT CALLED TO MY ATTENTION BY THE COMPANY. THE COMPANY KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS THE PARTS CLERK TOLD ME THEY EVEN HAVE A RETRO KIT AVAILABLE TO REPLACE THIS ASSISTED STEERING SYSTEM PERIOD! *TR

IN NOVEMBER OF 2000, THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL AND CHEVROLET REPAIRED THE BRAKES. THERE WERE NO FAILURES FOR 18,000 MILES. CURRENTLY, AT 40,500 MILES, THE FAILURE HAS RECURRED. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-03-12
  • VIN: 1GNEK13R4VJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: FOR ABOUT A YEAR I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM ACTIVATES INTERMITTENTLY ON DRY PAVEMENT AT SLOW SPEEDS, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE ISSUE HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY PROBLEMATIC, ACTIVATING NEARLY EVERY TIME I APPLY THE BRAKES (MANY TIMES EVEN IF I DON'T APPLY THE BRAKES!) AND I AM NOT COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR FEAR THAT I MAY NOT COMPLETELY STOP BEFORE MAKING CONTACT WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. ALTHOUGH THERE IS A RECALL REGARDING THE FAILURE OF THE ABS SYSTEM ON CHEVY TAHOES, IT DOES NOT INCLUDE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED IN 1997. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THE NHTSA WEB SITE HAD POSTED A REMEDY: REMOVE THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND CLEAN THE WHEEL SPEED SURFACE, GREASE THE MOUNTING SURFACE, REINSTALL THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND CHECK THE PEAK-TO-PEAK OUTPUT VOLTAGE TO ENSURE THE WHEEL SPEED SIGNAL IS WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS. I TOOK A COPY OF THE REMEDY TO MY MECHANIC, WHO PROMPTLY FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS AND NOTIFIED ME THAT THE REMEDY FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I CONTACTED AN NHTSA CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AND ASKED IF AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN LAUNCHED REGARDING THIS DEFECT AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS NO INVESTIGATION AS OF YET. WITH ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS I HAVE BEEN READING REGARDING THIS PROBLEM, MY QUESTION IS: WHY HASN'T THIS ISSUE OF ABS SYSTEM FAILURE IN 1997 TAHOES BEEN ADDRESSED? IF THE PROBLEM IS OCCURRING IN VEHICLES (REGARDLESS OF THE YEAR MODEL) AND THE RECALL HAS BEEN LIMITED TO ONLY A FEW YEAR MODELS, DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE ABS SYSTEM FAILURE ON THE 1997 TAHOE IS NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN REGARDING SAFETY? I AM REQUESTING THE BOARD TO LOOK AGAIN AT THE ABS COMPLAINTS AND INITIATE AN INVESTIGATION SO THAT GM WILL TAKE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE ABS SYSTEM. THANK YOU. *TR

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-02-15
  • VIN: 1GNEK13R3VJ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: ONGOING PROBLEM WITH BRAKE LIGHT FAILURES. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. I ORDERED THE TAHOE THROUGH MY LOCAL DEALER IN 1997. IT ONLY HAS 84,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS NOT BEEN ABUSED IN ANY WAY. SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. THE BRAKE LIGHTS KEEP GOING OUT. THE DEALER CANNOT EXPLAIN IT. I RECEIVED A TICKET ON FEBRUARY 15, 2008 FOR NOT HAVING ANY BRAKE LIGHTS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH NEEDS RESOLUTION. WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP THE FIRST TIME FOR THE BRAKE LIGHTS IT COST ME OVER $500.00. THE BRAKE LIGHT SITUATION HAS NEVER BEEN RESOLVED AND EVER SINCE THEIR "REPAIR" THE ANTILOCK BRAKES DO NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY AND WE HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE BRAKES REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. *TR

THIS TIME I ASKED THE MECHANIC TO CLEAN THE SENSORS (AS SUGGESTED BY CHEVY SERVICE UPDATES) TO TRY AND SAVE MONEY. IT DIDN'T WORK ALONG WITH TRYING TO REPLACE THE SENSOR. NOW I HAVE TO HAVE A HUB REPLACED AGAIN. I'VE BEEN LUCKILY SO FAR BECAUSE I KNOW OF THE PROBLEM, BUT I'VE HAD A FEW CLOSE CALLS WITH HITTING CARS IN PARKING LOTS. *TR

  • Summary: I HAVE A 1997 CHEVROLET TAHOE THAT HAS WINDSHIELD WIPERS THAT DO NOT WORK. THIS BEGAN ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO. AT FIRST THE WIPERS WORKED INTERMITTENTLY AND ARE NOW AT THE POINT WHERE THEY DO NOT WORK AT ALL. I OWN A 1997 CHEVROLET CK 3500 PICK-UP THAT ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AND THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS REPAIRED AS THE VIN FOR THE PICK-UP WAS ON THE RECALL LIST. ACCORDING TO RECALL #03V159000, YEAR MODEL 1996 CHEVROLET TAHOE VEHICLES ARE ALSO AFFECTED AND ARE THE ONES ELIGIBLE FOR REPAIR. IT SEEMS VERY APPARENT THAT THE SAME CIRCUIT BOARD THAT WAS USED IN 1996 VEHICLES HAS ALSO BEEN USED IN 1997 VEHICLES AS I OWN A 1997 AND IT HAD THIS PROBLEM, AS STATED ABOVE. I AM REQUESTING THAT THIS VEHICLE ALSO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE RECALL #03V159000 AND THEREFORE HAVE THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS REPLACED. *TR

Negative 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe car reviews

  1. Douglas Beatty 2024-09-28

The reliability of this vehicle has been quite low in the past. However, after experiencing a fuel pump issue at 33K, a corroded water hose quick connect at 40K, a dead transmission at 55K, a broken driver door handle at 60K, an alternator problem at 65K, and a windshield wiper circuit board issue at 70K, I had everything replaced. I even had a Delco battery leak acid that destroyed the battery cables, and the parts counter at the Chevy dealer recommended that I switch to another brand because he had a room full of leaking batteries and Delco did nothing to redesign to prevent the problem. Despite all of these issues, I am happy to report that the vehicle now runs great and I plan to keep it for some time as a tow vehicle for my boat.

  2. Clint Schuppe 2024-09-25

I have generally liked this vehicle. City gas mileage has been in the 11 to 12 range. I love its room and versatility. However, the major sore spot is reliability. I have had to replace an alternator, brakes (twice), two sets of tires, and now I require a new transmission. Despite this, I still appreciate the vehicle's positive aspects. My next vehicle will probably be a Toyota.

  3. Jarrell Mante 2024-06-12

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with Chevy cars. I learned to drive in a Suburban and have been a Chevy fan ever since. I had a K5 blazer and absolutely loved it! I also liked the Tahoe and ended up getting a 97 model in 2001 with only 60k miles on it. However, I did have some trouble with it. Unfortunately, the alternator went out as soon as I drove it off the lot, and I had to replace the brakes and rotors, rebuild the transmission, replace the water pump, battery, starter, and even had some issues with the windshield wipers. The transmission cooler was built into the radiator and sprung a leak, causing all sorts of problems, and the head gasket started leaking, all before hitting 88k miles! Despite these issues, I still believe that Chevy cars are great. However, I do recommend reading reviews before making a purchase. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my truck. I leased it for three years and loved it so much that I ended up buying it! During the warranty period, GM was great and replaced a couple of things like the a/c blower fans, power steering, break rotors, rear pinion seal, and fixed some rattles. After the warranty expired, I had to fix a coolant leak, do the brakes again, and replace a valve in the transmission. I've put about 1k/year into the truck for the last 3 years and now it has 83k miles. Unfortunately, I noticed some leaks from the transfer case and rear pinion seal the other day. Do you have any advice on what I should do next?

It sounds like you've had some trouble with your SUV, but overall it seems like a reliable car with a nice look. I hope you're enjoying driving it!

This has been a great truck! I drive it off-road about 4 weeks a year and in the snow during winter in Colorado. It handles great on both wet and dry pavement. While it could get better mileage, it's a full-sized SUV, so what can you expect?

I've had a great experience with my 97 Tahoe. It's been a reliable and safe vehicle for me. Although we're selling it to make room for a Volvo wagon now that we have a baby, I would have held onto this truck for another 20 years if I could. While the gas mileage is not the best, it's definitely worth it for the peace of mind that comes with driving such a sturdy vehicle.

I bought a hoe and have loved it ever since! It has awesome horsepower, especially with a few upgrades like headers, K and N air filter, and performance exhaust. After a fuel system flush and tranny flush, I've noticed better fuel economy, but with the power it's pushing, I'm okay with it. It's perfect for mudding and pull offs. However, if you're working the overdrive transmission, it needs a BG tranny flush and conditioner for protection. Of course, regular maintenance is necessary for any vehicle. If you're looking for a fun ride, I highly recommend General Motors!

Hi there! I'm actually the second and last owner of this amazing vehicle. I have to say, the interior design and materials are absolutely top-notch - I've never experienced anything like it in any other vehicle I've ridden in. I'm so in love with my truck that I could never imagine selling it. It's just so versatile and well-designed!
