1997 Chevrolet Tahoe problems

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

- Summary: I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE AT TAX TIME IN 2014. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY TRUCK. IT'S A LIFTED, AUTOMATIC 4WD WITH FRONT AND BACK TOWING PKG, AND PERFECT FOR THE MOUNTAIN ROADS AND SNOW WHERE I LIVE. LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER I BOUGHT IT I HAD TO TRAVEL 300 MILES TO TUCSON AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT, DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO GET IT FIXED SO I TRANSFERRED MY JOB AND STARTED OVER IN TUCSON. AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION WITH THE DEALER, THEY FINALLY HAD THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT. THEY GAVE ME A 300 MI WARRANTY (ALL I NEEDED TO GET BACK TO TUCSON) AND LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER I GOT HOME, THE FUEL PUMP WENT OUT. SO I LET THE TRUCK SIT FOR 2 MONTHS BEFORE I GOT IT FIXED. I CAME ACROSS ENOUGH MONEY TO GET ME AND MY CHILDREN OUT OF DV SITUATION AND PROCEEDED TO DRIVE THEM TO MICHIGAN. MADE IT TO OK AND IT WAS COMPLETELY BURNED OUT AGAIN. I ALWAYS HAVE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DONE, I DO UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE AN AUTOMATIC 4WD, I DON'T PUSH MY VEHICLE TOO HARD. I MADE IT TO MICHIGAN BUT HERE IT IS WINTER AND I HAVE A TRUCK IN OK THAT I LOVE AND AM STILL PAYING FOR AND CAN'T USE, AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE TRANSMISSION KEEPS GOING OUT AND IN THE MEAN TIME I HAVE 2 KIDS AND ONE ON THE WAY AND CAN'T AFFORD TO FIX MY TRUCK OR GET A NEW ONE. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY TRANSMISSION, BUT CANNOT FIND ONE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING I NEED TO KNOW OR CAN DO. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

- VIN: 1GNEK13R3VJ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY
- Summary: THE POWER WINDOW ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WILL STOP WORKING ALL OF A SUDDEN. IT IS NOT ALL OF THE TIME, BUT SOMETIMES, WHEN I HAVE THE WINDOW DOWN, AND I PUSH THE POWER SWITCH TO CLOSE OR OPEN THE WINDOW IT WILL NOT WORK. THIS COULD LEAD TO A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM, IF FOR SOME REASON I AM UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR AND THEN THE WINDOW WILL NOT GO DOWN. WE LIVE IN MICHIGAN AND YOU RECENTLY RECALLED VEHICLES BECAUSE OF A PROBLEM WITH THE MASTER POWER WINDOW SWITCH CAUSING FIRES IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR, WHICH ENDED UP MELTING AND/OR BURNING THE DOOR. THERE MUST BE CORROSION OF THE WIRING IN MY VEHICLE THAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM WITH MY WINDOW. I KNOW THAT YOUR RECALL WAS NOT FOR THE SAME YEAR AS MY VEHICLE, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND I DON'T WANT TO END UP HAVING MY CAR DOOR CATCH ON FIRE, ESPECIALLY IF ME OR MY FAMILY ARE IN IT, OR IF IT IS PARKED IN OUR GARAGE IT COULD BURN OUR ENTIRE HOUSE DOWN. WHEN WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS BRAND NEW, AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO OTHER OWNERS. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-07-18
- VIN: 1GNEK13R6VJ
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: POWER STEERING INPUT/EFFORT HAD BECAME ERRATIC CAUSING INCREASED EFFORT OR WORSE, OVERSTEERING MIDWAY THROUGH TURNS. FIRST NOTICED THIS PROBLEM LAST FALL AT WINTER TIRE CHANGEOVER. I INITIALLY BLAMED IT ON ICY ROADS BUT THEN NOTICED IT ON OBVIOUSLY NON ICY ROADS AS WELL. OCCURRED JUST OCCASIONALLY AT FIRST. I KEPT BLAMING TIRES BUT THIS SPRING WHEN I CHANGED BACK OVER TO MY SUMMER TIRES THE PROBLEM DID NOT GO AWAY. DEALERSHIP HAD INDICATED SOME WORN FRONT END PARTS NEEDING REPLACEMENT SO I HAD THAT DONE ALONG WITH A FRONT END ALIGNMENT FOLLOWING. DIDN'T HELP. FOUND MANY DISCUSSIONS WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES ON THE INTERNET AND MOST INDICATED REPLACING THE STEERING EVO SENSOR AS THE CURE. I REPLACED THAT PART AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM. THE SENSATION OF THE LOSS OF STEERING MIDCORNER IS AT THE LEAST A LITTLE DISCONCERTING AND AT THE MOST COULD LEAD TO AN OVER-REACTION AND A SEVERE CRASH! WITH AS MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE AS I FOUND I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS COULD HAVE BEEN LET GO AND NOT CALLED TO MY ATTENTION BY THE COMPANY. THE COMPANY KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS THE PARTS CLERK TOLD ME THEY EVEN HAVE A RETRO KIT AVAILABLE TO REPLACE THIS ASSISTED STEERING SYSTEM PERIOD! *TR

IN NOVEMBER OF 2000, THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL AND CHEVROLET REPAIRED THE BRAKES. THERE WERE NO FAILURES FOR 18,000 MILES. CURRENTLY, AT 40,500 MILES, THE FAILURE HAS RECURRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,500. UPDATED 10/16/08. *LJ THE DEALER REPLACED THE LEFT FRONT HUB. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-03-12
- VIN: 1GNEK13R4VJ
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: FOR ABOUT A YEAR I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM ACTIVATES INTERMITTENTLY ON DRY PAVEMENT AT SLOW SPEEDS, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE ISSUE HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY PROBLEMATIC, ACTIVATING NEARLY EVERY TIME I APPLY THE BRAKES (MANY TIMES EVEN IF I DON'T APPLY THE BRAKES!) AND I AM NOT COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR FEAR THAT I MAY NOT COMPLETELY STOP BEFORE MAKING CONTACT WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. ALTHOUGH THERE IS A RECALL REGARDING THE FAILURE OF THE ABS SYSTEM ON CHEVY TAHOES, IT DOES NOT INCLUDE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED IN 1997. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THE NHTSA WEB SITE HAD POSTED A REMEDY: REMOVE THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND CLEAN THE WHEEL SPEED SURFACE, GREASE THE MOUNTING SURFACE, REINSTALL THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND CHECK THE PEAK-TO-PEAK OUTPUT VOLTAGE TO ENSURE THE WHEEL SPEED SIGNAL IS WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS. I TOOK A COPY OF THE REMEDY TO MY MECHANIC, WHO PROMPTLY FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS AND NOTIFIED ME THAT THE REMEDY FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I CONTACTED AN NHTSA CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AND ASKED IF AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN LAUNCHED REGARDING THIS DEFECT AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS NO INVESTIGATION AS OF YET. WITH ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS I HAVE BEEN READING REGARDING THIS PROBLEM, MY QUESTION IS: WHY HASN'T THIS ISSUE OF ABS SYSTEM FAILURE IN 1997 TAHOES BEEN ADDRESSED? IF THE PROBLEM IS OCCURRING IN VEHICLES (REGARDLESS OF THE YEAR MODEL) AND THE RECALL HAS BEEN LIMITED TO ONLY A FEW YEAR MODELS, DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE ABS SYSTEM FAILURE ON THE 1997 TAHOE IS NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN REGARDING SAFETY? I AM REQUESTING THE BOARD TO LOOK AGAIN AT THE ABS COMPLAINTS AND INITIATE AN INVESTIGATION SO THAT GM WILL TAKE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE ABS SYSTEM. THANK YOU. *TR
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-02-15
- VIN: 1GNEK13R3VJ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: ONGOING PROBLEM WITH BRAKE LIGHT FAILURES. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. I ORDERED THE TAHOE THROUGH MY LOCAL DEALER IN 1997. IT ONLY HAS 84,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS NOT BEEN ABUSED IN ANY WAY. SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. THE BRAKE LIGHTS KEEP GOING OUT. THE DEALER CANNOT EXPLAIN IT. I RECEIVED A TICKET ON FEBRUARY 15, 2008 FOR NOT HAVING ANY BRAKE LIGHTS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH NEEDS RESOLUTION. WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP THE FIRST TIME FOR THE BRAKE LIGHTS IT COST ME OVER $500.00. THE BRAKE LIGHT SITUATION HAS NEVER BEEN RESOLVED AND EVER SINCE THEIR "REPAIR" THE ANTILOCK BRAKES DO NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY AND WE HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE BRAKES REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

- VIN: 1GNEK13R1VJ
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: ABS ACTIVATION DURING SLOW MOTION, UNDER 10MPH. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM. BOTH TIMES ONE OF THE HUBS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS TIME I ASKED THE MECHANIC TO CLEAN THE SENSORS (AS SUGGESTED BY CHEVY SERVICE UPDATES) TO TRY AND SAVE MONEY. IT DIDN'T WORK ALONG WITH TRYING TO REPLACE THE SENSOR. NOW I HAVE TO HAVE A HUB REPLACED AGAIN. I'VE BEEN LUCKILY SO FAR BECAUSE I KNOW OF THE PROBLEM, BUT I'VE HAD A FEW CLOSE CALLS WITH HITTING CARS IN PARKING LOTS. *TR

- Summary: I HAVE A 1997 CHEVROLET TAHOE THAT HAS WINDSHIELD WIPERS THAT DO NOT WORK. THIS BEGAN ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO. AT FIRST THE WIPERS WORKED INTERMITTENTLY AND ARE NOW AT THE POINT WHERE THEY DO NOT WORK AT ALL. I OWN A 1997 CHEVROLET CK 3500 PICK-UP THAT ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AND THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS REPAIRED AS THE VIN FOR THE PICK-UP WAS ON THE RECALL LIST. ACCORDING TO RECALL #03V159000, YEAR MODEL 1996 CHEVROLET TAHOE VEHICLES ARE ALSO AFFECTED AND ARE THE ONES ELIGIBLE FOR REPAIR. IT SEEMS VERY APPARENT THAT THE SAME CIRCUIT BOARD THAT WAS USED IN 1996 VEHICLES HAS ALSO BEEN USED IN 1997 VEHICLES AS I OWN A 1997 AND IT HAD THIS PROBLEM, AS STATED ABOVE. I AM REQUESTING THAT THIS VEHICLE ALSO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE RECALL #03V159000 AND THEREFORE HAVE THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS REPLACED. *TR

I had to replace the engine at around 85,000 miles, and then around 130,000 miles I had to replace the head and vortec gaskets. Unfortunately, I also had to replace the radiator because the shop busted the old one when they replaced the gaskets. On the bright side, the seats are electrical and fully adjustable, and it has power windows and rear hatch style doors with a washer and blade. I have low mileage on mine due to the fact that I drive an 18 wheeler, but I started using Lucas ethanol treatment and the mileage has really gone up. Now I'm averaging between 16 and 17 MPG, which is much better than the rated 10 MPG for the type of driving I do in it. I'm now using Lucas oil treatment and the engine is running a lot better. Unfortunately, at 278,000 miles, the transmission went out, which was very expensive to repair. I'm also having a lot of electrical issues with the windows and door locks. By the way, I don't know why it says 2 doors. It is actually a 4-door.

I bought this truck because it has the best design Chevy has ever come out with, along with the infamous 5.7 powerhouse. In my experience, this truck has been more reliable than my past two brand new trucks. It rides so well and I even have room for my family, despite it being a two-door. With a little elbow grease, you can even get into the back. If you're thinking of purchasing one of these, I think you'll be very pleased. I just hit 182,000 miles this morning and it's still going strong!
-
I am so happy that this is my first vehicle! Initially, I was considering trading it for a smaller car, but once I hit the road, I fell in love with it. I had to fix the rear brake lines to make it roadworthy, and there are a few more repairs that need to be done, such as the stabilizer bar and front brakes. Unfortunately, part of the front driver's side frame is rotted, and there's a leak in the gas tank near the top. Despite these issues, I have driven almost 1000k a month since October and I still adore it. I hope it will last for a long time before it finally gives out.
-
Hey there! Thanks for sharing your experience with your truck. It sounds like you've had a great time with it! I'm glad to hear that it's been reliable for you, especially on those road trips and in the snow. It's always a plus when parts are easy to find and affordable. I totally understand your preference for a V8 truck, even if it means sacrificing a bit of gas mileage. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

After 12 years of owning our truck, I decided to make some performance upgrades when I returned from Iraq in January. With the addition of dual exhaust (Flowmasters) and a K&N Cold Air Intake, the changes were unbelievable and immediately noticeable. Although the gas mileage is what was expected, it doesn't seem as bad as what is on paper. The interior may be a little plain, but the possibilities for add-ons are endless. The seats are large and comfortable, and the truck has proven to be very reliable. Despite being rear-ended three times in 12 years, the most recent incident being just two weeks ago when an F250 collided with us at 50 mph while we were stopped for traffic with my newly adopted 7-month-old daughter in the back, we were all okay. This truck has been through a lot, but it has always held up and proven to be a safe and dependable vehicle.

I've always been a fan of Chevy vehicles. I've owned their full-size and compact Blazers, 1500 pickup, and two extended cab trucks. I was excited to test drive the Tahoe and it did not disappoint - it has a roomy interior and a smooth ride, making it just the right size. However, I have found that owning the Tahoe can be expensive due to poor fuel efficiency (less than the sticker indicates) and the need for constant repairs. I have had to replace several parts, including the transmission, starter, alternator, water and fuel pumps, windshield wiper motor (due to a recall), front interior door handles, passenger seat belt assembly clasp/lock, idler arm, brakes and rotors multiple times, and spark plugs too many times to count. The steering sensors and electronics have also failed on and off, and the interior plastics are now starting to break. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the Tahoe's features and capabilities.

I purchased a used Tahoe from Russ Darrow and unfortunately experienced some issues with it. Within a year of purchase, I had to replace the transmission and encountered some electrical problems shortly after. Additionally, the transmission started slipping and the rear end made a clunking noise after only 8 months of use. The window adjuster and lock mechanism also fell into the door, making it impossible to use those buttons on the passenger side. I found the anti-lock brakes to be less than ideal for this vehicle, as the whole vehicle shakes and feels out of control when coming to an abrupt stop.

We purchased the vehicle when it was only 18 months old, so it was practically new. The service was pretty good until it reached 75,000 miles, after which it started experiencing some issues. Unfortunately, the intake manifold gaskets began to leak for no apparent reason, and we had to pay $800 at the GM dealer to fix it. Interestingly, the same thing happened to my dad's 96 Suburban and my best friend's 99 Suburban. At 80,000 miles, the condenser coil failed, and we had to pay $667 to have the dash completely disassembled. After that, the vehicle never rode the same again. Finally, we had to replace the ERG valve, which cost us another $500. Overall, it was a challenging experience, but we learned a lot from it.

This truck has had some reliability issues with certain components. The steering sensors have failed twice, the fuel pump once (costing $900), and the transmission ($3500). Despite having only 75000 miles on it and never being used off-road or for towing, the fuel pump and transmission can fail without warning, leaving you stranded on the side of the road. The steering sensors can also cause the truck to veer off the road or into oncoming traffic, but at least you can make it back to town to get it fixed. If you're considering buying one, make sure to get an extended warranty and keep a cell phone handy in case you need to call a tow truck.

Hi there! I'm an ASE master tech and I take great care of all my vehicles. My Tahoe, which I purchased brand new, has been a bit of a love/hate relationship. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues along the way. At 31,000 miles, the car quit on the road due to battery post failure, which caused acid to spill all over the R/F brake line. Then, at 43,000 miles, the transmission failed, just 8 months out of warranty. When I reached out to Chevrolet, they suggested that I should have purchased an extended warranty. Now, at 52,000 miles, I'm dealing with an intake manifold leak. Despite these challenges, I've replaced the rear pinion seal, wiper motor, water pump, front brake rotors, idler arm, and last week, the transmission valve body again.
