Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a popular compact sedan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Power Window Failure: Power window failure is often due to a failed window regulator, which will need to be replaced. This issue affects 2010, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 90,000 miles.
- General Electrical Issues: These issues can be difficult to diagnose and are often caused by ground wiring problems under the battery. This issue affects many models, including 2012, 2013, and 2014 with an average mileage of 150,000 miles.
- Odor from HVAC Vents: This issue is caused by condensation in the heater case and AC (HVAC) system after the car has been sitting idle for 2 hours or more. It affects 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 50,000 miles.
- Faulty Stereo System: This problem is particularly common in the 2010 Jetta, where many drivers have reported that the car stereo simply died.
- Transmission Failure: This issue is common in the 2006 Jetta, where many drivers have reported problems shifting and getting stuck in neutral between 85k and 110k mileage.
- ABS Module Failure: This problem is particularly severe in the 2009 Jetta, where the failing Antilock Braking System (ABS) has led to numerous accidents or near-accidents.
- Clock Spring Failure: This problem affects Volkswagen owners, causing the driver's side airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls to become disabled. This issue has been ongoing for years, with a recall that was first issued in 2013 still under investigation.
- Ignition Coil Failure: This problem affects Volkswagen coils, causing the engine to suddenly lose power. This can lead to shaking or hesitation and leave the driver in a vulnerable position.
- Oil Sludge in the 1.8L Turbo Engine: This issue affected VW's 1.8-liter turbocharged engine from 1997 to 2005, and resulted in a class-action lawsuit due to the tiny 3.7-quart oil capacity that couldn't compensate for the engine's heat generation.
- Diesel Emissions Scandal: Volkswagen has admitted to using a defeat device on its supposedly 'clean diesel' vehicles to skirt around US emissions standards.
These issues can affect the reliability and safety of the Volkswagen Jetta, and it's important for owners to be aware of them. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent some of these problems, but others may require more extensive repairs or replacements.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
- VIN: 3VWNM7BUXNM
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My car only had twelve thousand miles on it when the problem started with the rear brakes. They were at an eight and in less than two weeks time they started dragging not fully disengaging and went down to a one. Screeching. I looked it up and seems to be a common problem. If it is common and VW is aware of it not only affecting my specific model but other models as well. I believe it should be addressed and figure out a way to stop it. It messes with my fuel economy as well as goes thru pads way sooner than what they should. Which is gonna be costly over time.

Volkswagen Jetta 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: 3VWD17AJ6FM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My Volkswagen vehicle (Jetta Model 2015, MOdel 4DJSA, VIN [XXX] ) had a first event on [XXX] where the car suddenly stop in the middle of [XXX]. The car was taken to Volkswagen at Inver Grove and the cause was related to failure in a piston. The car was fixed without cost as it was covered by the guarantee of the vehicle. Again, around [XXX], the car again suddenly stopped working and needed to be thawed to Volkswagen at Inver Grove, the diagnosis done was extreme misfires on all cylinders that cause the car to die while in operation. The root cause was due to excessive oil inside the cylinder. In this occasion, the repair would not be covered under the guarantee and thus the option provided was to replace the motor at an estimated cost of $11,000 USD which is above the cost of the vehicle. It is important to notice that the car was routinely checked and serviced by Volkswagen at Inver Grove during the time we have owned the vehicle. There were not diagnostic tools that we could have to address this issue, to our knowledge there is nothing we did to cause this catastrophic failure. This recurrent incident could be likely a manufacturing issue and thus it is not caused by the user. The damage of the cylinder was not isolated to just one, all four have the same issue. Our car is currently parked (we are paying storage insurance on it) and we cannot use it. Our ask is for Volkswagen to repair the vehicle at no cost to us as we were not at fault for this issue. We kindly ask you for your support on this matter. Respectfully. [XXX] . INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Volkswagen Jetta 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-26
- VIN: 3VWLL7AJ9DM
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 2013 Jetta TDI with 92k miles. I am the third owner of this car which has been regularly maintained since new with all service records, including a 2019 emissions modification per VW recall. I bought this vehicle less than a year ago. My son was driving to work when the car shut off without warning. He was able to restart it and park safely and had it towed home. After replacing the battery and a fuse, the car continued to show a code for the ECM Power Relay Load Circuit . We took it to the mechanic to have it inspected, and learned that the high pressure fuel pump had imploded and metal shavings were found throughout the entire fuel system. This is evidently a common and very costly issue that VW has an obligation to fix. They knowingly continue to use a defective part that is essentially a ticking time bomb without regard to the owners safety and the financial ramifications of the repair. All VW vehicles with this defect should be covered by VW, not just selected model years and models. This causes catastrophic damage and VW is completely negligent by not doing what is right by the customer. The VW dealer quoted a $9,000. repair and VW North America declined any assistance with the vehicle. The car is not worth that, and it would be absurd to pay out of pocket for the repair; especially since VW continues to use a defective designed HPFP that can eventually fail again. VW was selective in the model years that they recalled, but only after the parts failed. They should have applied the recall and repairs to ALL vehicles proactively. I now have a 2013 paperweight in my driveway. The reason I purchased this specific car was for the longevity that diesels are known for. What a shame that VW does not rectify the situation in lieu of the previous diesel scandal. I'll be going back to Volvo or Subaru, two companies that I have had great experiences with, both in safety and reliability. VW should do the right thing, but I guess that's of no importance anymore.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 3VWDZ7AJ9BM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Component/System Failure/Malfunction: ignition switch and starter, possibly transmission Yes, available for inspection upon request. Car has randomly stalled while in motion; ignition and starter switch have been replaced as well as microswitch panel - yet problem persists. Power steering shuts down, steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn. Have to put car in neutral, typically, and try to restart while in motion. Has happened over 100 times; replaced alternator as well. Battery was replaced, brand new, yet was drained multiple times - recharged at Autozone. Vehicle was brought to Larry H. Miller Volkswagen - was advised the problem was fixed, as well as recall repairs (microswitch), paid for the service, went to leave dealership and problem immediately happened again. Complete shut off. Would stay running a little longer while in neutral or AC on. When the vehicle stalls the only light that comes on is the battery light. All other lights and systems work. Ran diagnostic codes through personal mechanic, friend, and dealership... Code states "Key/Ignition/Computer" but unsure what specifically. The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta also does not have the original key fob. May be improper programming? Continued to research all other recalls, services have been completed and yet the problem persists.

Vehicle year: 2003
I have owned my 2003 VW Jetta since 2006, when I bought it with 23,788 miles. It now has 196,483 miles and has been an absolute joy to own. Despite my abuse, it's still on its original clutch and has only needed the timing belt replaced twice. The interior still looks as good as new, except for the driver's side entrance bolster. The engine has only gotten better with time and the transmission is now easier to shift. This car has been a great value for the money, providing 31 mpg on long drives and 25-27.3 mpg in town. For the best handling, I recommend keeping tire pressures 4 lbs under the max. I updated this on 4/12/16 when the car had 231,600 miles and it was still running strong. I love this car and it handles like a dream. The best tire for this car is the Cintinauro P7 Pirelli, which you can find on the Tire Rack website. I recently replaced the speed sensor, which corrected a stalling issue, poor mileage, and a lack of power, all with one part. It was the best $527.00 I've spent and my first dealer experience, which was great. Although I traded it in on 4/15/17 for $800.00, I really wish I had kept it. I over-revved it on 5/28/16 with 236,847 miles and blew the seals on the nearly completely blown turbo, causing it to smoke. Before it became worthless, I decided to trade it in. It would have cost $5,500.00 to replace the turbo and catalytic converter. I replaced it with a 2009 Honda Accord EX 4cyl/5SPDR, which I only drove for two years before replacing it with a 2018 Accord Hybrid, which was a much better buy.Still want another turbo, as the Jetta is still my number one car of choice. However, the repair bills have been a bit of a hassle.

Vehicle year: 2021
I really don't understand the negative review about the interior being 'plasticy'. Personally, I find it to be very clean and well-designed. If you appreciate clean lines and a non-cluttered interior, then this is the perfect vehicle for you. The interior is comfortable, spacious, and quiet. Even the base level Jetta is a great option if you're looking to save some money. The engine is impressive and the transmission is smooth, providing a comfortable ride. While it may not be a sports car, it handles well. The SE model is particularly impressive, with dual climate control, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Vehicle year: 2017
We purchased our 2017 Jetta with the 1.4t engine a year ago when it had 13,000 miles on the clock. Since then, we've driven it over 41,000 miles and it's been an absolute pleasure. We consistently get between 33-36 mpg and have yet to experience any issues with the car. Occasionally, the tire pressure light comes on, but it's a minor inconvenience that can be easily resolved with the push of a button. We've even taken it on a few road trips, including one over 1,000 miles, and it's performed flawlessly. It's a blast to drive and has plenty of zip.

Vehicle year: 2019
Looking for a basic commuter car for my 100-mile daily round trip to work, I came across the new Jetta. It looks great, with an understated yet characterful design. On the road, it's incredibly quiet and comfortable. The acceleration and handling are more than adequate, especially for a base model car. I've been averaging an impressive 39 mpg over the first 1,500 miles, with a max of 47 mpg for a 50-mile trip to work. It's amazing to be able to drive 500 miles a week for commuting to work on just one tank of gas. After 2.5 years and almost 60,000 miles, I can confidently say that the Jetta has been a great car. It's still averaging around 40 mpg, and everything has held up well - it looks almost new, and I haven't had any mechanical issues. I'm very happy with the car.

Vehicle year: 1999
Hi there! We purchased our Jetta second-hand with 62k miles on it. The car is absolutely stunning both inside and out, but it does have a few minor flaws. Like some other reviews on this site, we did experience an issue with the front window getting stuck in the down position. However, we were able to fix it ourselves with a new regulator that only cost $150. We also had a small issue with the sunroof shade, which broke off the track and got stuck in the headliner, preventing the sunroof from sliding open. Additionally, the trunk light seems to have a mind of its own. Despite these minor issues, we have found the build quality to be excellent. Although we wish the car was a stick shift, the VR6 engine is still a great choice. Thanks for reading!

Consider purchasing a different vehicle. Unfortunately, my experience with the New Jetta has been less than satisfactory. Within the first 11 days of ownership, several issues arose, including the driver's side light cover falling off, the outside temperature sensor failing, and both the driver's side door and center console cover rattling. Despite two visits to the dealer, none of these issues have been resolved. In fact, the service manager informed me that Volkswagen has instructed them not to install the replacement temperature sensor and to wait for another one. At this time, it is unclear when my car will be fully repaired.

Hello! I've been driving this car for 8 years now. While I'm not a car enthusiast, I need a reliable vehicle to get me from point A to point B. Most of the time, it does exactly what I need it to do. However, there have been some unexpected issues along the way. Over the years, I've had to deal with a broken power steering, oil leaks, a stuck trunk door, and even a broken ignition lock. Unfortunately, these issues have been quite costly to fix, on top of regular maintenance expenses. For example, replacing the ignition lock cost me $700 plus towing expenses. Despite these challenges, I'm grateful for my car and the freedom it gives me to go where I need to go.

I have had some issues with dealership support in the past and have found it difficult to trust them. Unfortunately, after an oil change at a dealership, I experienced some loud flapping noises from the engine compartment while on a long trip, 500 miles away from home. Upon inspection, I discovered that the underbelly pan was missing bolts. I had to drive at a slower speed for another 500 miles to reach a VW dealership in a nearby town where I had to pay for the missing bolts to be replaced. Despite this, my local dealership refused to refund me for the cost of the repair. It can be frustrating when it seems like diesel engines are supposed to be good for 100,000 miles, but at that point, the repair saga begins. I am now left wondering whether to cut my losses and move on or take my chances that the worst is behind me.

I recently purchased a 1996 Jetta GL with only 27,875 miles on it and a 2-year warranty. Although I had heard good things about Jettas, I unfortunately experienced some issues with this car shortly after purchasing it. Within 6 weeks, all 4 side moldings had to be replaced, and they all came off at different times, which required me to take it back to the shop. Additionally, I had to replace the ignition, starter, driver's side door lock, fuel injection, and more. It was frustrating to have to bring it to the shop every 3 to 4 months. Based on my experience, I have decided not to purchase another VW.

I recently traded in my 1994 Honda Civic for a brand new Jetta, enticed by the 'sign and drive' lease promotion. I thought I was getting a safer and more reliable vehicle, but unfortunately, I was mistaken. Despite my old Honda hitting 200k miles without any issues, I didn't want to take any chances. However, my 'new' Jetta has less than 2,000 miles on it and has already required 3 service visits, with a fourth scheduled for tomorrow. The 'check engine light' keeps coming on, and despite replacing faulty parts, the problem persists. It's frustrating when even the service department acknowledges that the old Civics were better cars.
