The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta is a popular compact sedan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Power Window Failure: Power window failure is often due to a failed window regulator, which will need to be replaced. This issue affects 2010, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 90,000 miles.
  • General Electrical Issues: These issues can be difficult to diagnose and are often caused by ground wiring problems under the battery. This issue affects many models, including 2012, 2013, and 2014 with an average mileage of 150,000 miles.
  • Odor from HVAC Vents: This issue is caused by condensation in the heater case and AC (HVAC) system after the car has been sitting idle for 2 hours or more. It affects 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 50,000 miles.
  • Faulty Stereo System: This problem is particularly common in the 2010 Jetta, where many drivers have reported that the car stereo simply died.
  • Transmission Failure: This issue is common in the 2006 Jetta, where many drivers have reported problems shifting and getting stuck in neutral between 85k and 110k mileage.
  • ABS Module Failure: This problem is particularly severe in the 2009 Jetta, where the failing Antilock Braking System (ABS) has led to numerous accidents or near-accidents.
  • Clock Spring Failure: This problem affects Volkswagen owners, causing the driver's side airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls to become disabled. This issue has been ongoing for years, with a recall that was first issued in 2013 still under investigation.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: This problem affects Volkswagen coils, causing the engine to suddenly lose power. This can lead to shaking or hesitation and leave the driver in a vulnerable position.
  • Oil Sludge in the 1.8L Turbo Engine: This issue affected VW's 1.8-liter turbocharged engine from 1997 to 2005, and resulted in a class-action lawsuit due to the tiny 3.7-quart oil capacity that couldn't compensate for the engine's heat generation.
  • Diesel Emissions Scandal: Volkswagen has admitted to using a defeat device on its supposedly 'clean diesel' vehicles to skirt around US emissions standards.

These issues can affect the reliability and safety of the Volkswagen Jetta, and it's important for owners to be aware of them. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent some of these problems, but others may require more extensive repairs or replacements.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: 3VWNM7BUXNM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My car only had twelve thousand miles on it when the problem started with the rear brakes. They were at an eight and in less than two weeks time they started dragging not fully disengaging and went down to a one. Screeching. I looked it up and seems to be a common problem. If it is common and VW is aware of it not only affecting my specific model but other models as well. I believe it should be addressed and figure out a way to stop it. It messes with my fuel economy as well as goes thru pads way sooner than what they should. Which is gonna be costly over time.

Volkswagen Jetta 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
  • VIN: 3VWD17AJ6FM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My Volkswagen vehicle (Jetta Model 2015, MOdel 4DJSA, VIN [XXX] ) had a first event on [XXX] where the car suddenly stop in the middle of [XXX]. The car was taken to Volkswagen at Inver Grove and the cause was related to failure in a piston. The car was fixed without cost as it was covered by the guarantee of the vehicle. Again, around [XXX], the car again suddenly stopped working and needed to be thawed to Volkswagen at Inver Grove, the diagnosis done was extreme misfires on all cylinders that cause the car to die while in operation. The root cause was due to excessive oil inside the cylinder. In this occasion, the repair would not be covered under the guarantee and thus the option provided was to replace the motor at an estimated cost of $11,000 USD which is above the cost of the vehicle. It is important to notice that the car was routinely checked and serviced by Volkswagen at Inver Grove during the time we have owned the vehicle. There were not diagnostic tools that we could have to address this issue, to our knowledge there is nothing we did to cause this catastrophic failure. This recurrent incident could be likely a manufacturing issue and thus it is not caused by the user. The damage of the cylinder was not isolated to just one, all four have the same issue. Our car is currently parked (we are paying storage insurance on it) and we cannot use it. Our ask is for Volkswagen to repair the vehicle at no cost to us as we were not at fault for this issue. We kindly ask you for your support on this matter. Respectfully. [XXX] . INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Volkswagen Jetta 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-26
  • VIN: 3VWLL7AJ9DM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2013 Jetta TDI with 92k miles. I am the third owner of this car which has been regularly maintained since new with all service records, including a 2019 emissions modification per VW recall. I bought this vehicle less than a year ago. My son was driving to work when the car shut off without warning. He was able to restart it and park safely and had it towed home. After replacing the battery and a fuse, the car continued to show a code for the ECM Power Relay Load Circuit . We took it to the mechanic to have it inspected, and learned that the high pressure fuel pump had imploded and metal shavings were found throughout the entire fuel system. This is evidently a common and very costly issue that VW has an obligation to fix. They knowingly continue to use a defective part that is essentially a ticking time bomb without regard to the owners safety and the financial ramifications of the repair. All VW vehicles with this defect should be covered by VW, not just selected model years and models. This causes catastrophic damage and VW is completely negligent by not doing what is right by the customer. The VW dealer quoted a $9,000. repair and VW North America declined any assistance with the vehicle. The car is not worth that, and it would be absurd to pay out of pocket for the repair; especially since VW continues to use a defective designed HPFP that can eventually fail again. VW was selective in the model years that they recalled, but only after the parts failed. They should have applied the recall and repairs to ALL vehicles proactively. I now have a 2013 paperweight in my driveway. The reason I purchased this specific car was for the longevity that diesels are known for. What a shame that VW does not rectify the situation in lieu of the previous diesel scandal. I'll be going back to Volvo or Subaru, two companies that I have had great experiences with, both in safety and reliability. VW should do the right thing, but I guess that's of no importance anymore.

Volkswagen Jetta 2011
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
  • VIN: 3VWDZ7AJ9BM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Component/System Failure/Malfunction: ignition switch and starter, possibly transmission Yes, available for inspection upon request. Car has randomly stalled while in motion; ignition and starter switch have been replaced as well as microswitch panel - yet problem persists. Power steering shuts down, steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn. Have to put car in neutral, typically, and try to restart while in motion. Has happened over 100 times; replaced alternator as well. Battery was replaced, brand new, yet was drained multiple times - recharged at Autozone. Vehicle was brought to Larry H. Miller Volkswagen - was advised the problem was fixed, as well as recall repairs (microswitch), paid for the service, went to leave dealership and problem immediately happened again. Complete shut off. Would stay running a little longer while in neutral or AC on. When the vehicle stalls the only light that comes on is the battery light. All other lights and systems work. Ran diagnostic codes through personal mechanic, friend, and dealership... Code states "Key/Ignition/Computer" but unsure what specifically. The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta also does not have the original key fob. May be improper programming? Continued to research all other recalls, services have been completed and yet the problem persists.

Latest negative Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Cortez Nitzsche 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2006

The 2006 TDI has had several issues, including a failed dual mass flywheel, cracked plastic valve cover, peeling rubber coating on the radio and radio buttons, broken air vent mechanisms, and a sticking fuel door lock. These problems are unacceptable for a car at this price point and are not seen in other late models. It is clear that improvements need to be made in the quality control process to ensure that these issues do not occur in the future.

  2. Dennis Bradtke 2025-02-20

    Vehicle year: 2007

Overall, the car is not bad. However, some lucky few, including myself, have experienced defective brakes. I had to replace the rear pads and rotors at 21,000 miles and again 9,000 miles later. Unfortunately, VW claims this is normal wear and tear. I have owned and driven many cars and have never had to replace pads, let alone rotors, before 40,000 miles. It is worth noting that there is no brake wear indicator light for the rear brakes, only for the front. Additionally, the rotors are designed so that they have to be replaced every time the pads are replaced, which can be very expensive.

    Vehicle year: 2000

I really enjoy the low RPM torque that the little diesel engine provides. It's amazing how minimal the changes in throttle settings are when climbing hills. The automatic transmission has been perfect for me. While timing belt changes can be somewhat expensive, they are the norm for all current vehicles. The build quality could be better as there are quite a few rattles and other noises that have developed. Occasionally, the 'Check Engine' light comes on, but this seems to be a common issue with VWs and they usually go away on their own. I would recommend this car for someone who is familiar with car maintenance, but it may not be the best choice for a non-mechanic as it can be troublesome with the little things. Repairs can also be expensive. The CD changer in the trunk could be better, but I'm really impressed with the 600+ miles I can get out of a single tank of gas!

  4. Emerald Hagenes 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 2003

I bought this vehicle in 06' and was initially sold on the sporty black on black look. Unfortunately, within 30 days of purchasing the Jetta, the water pump, electrical system, and sunroof all malfunctioned. Since then, I've invested over $4k in repairs and counting. VW repairs are notoriously expensive, and even a simple side mirror replacement cost me $954 at the dealership. To make matters worse, my recall for the sunroof wasn't even accepted. This car has been a nightmare! The sunroof leaks, the water pump went bad, and there is no legroom for backseat passengers. Additionally, the cup holders are located above the radio, making it difficult to see the station or insert a CD without removing my drinks. Water from my cups has even leaked over the radio and into my cash tray. Finding rims to fit has also been a challenging experience.

Hi there! I recently purchased this VW from an auction and unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. After just a couple of days, I noticed that the transmission was leaking fluid and I had to pay $400 to fix a bad seal. Then, just a few days later, the automatic transmission started slipping and making a strange noise. Now, I'm faced with the cost of rebuilding the transmission, which is estimated to be around $1500. It's a shame because the car has only had 81,000 miles and had three owners before me. I'm hoping that these issues are the only ones I'll encounter with this VW.

  1. Gayle Harris 2025-02-22

    Vehicle year: 2008

Congratulations on your purchase of the 2008 Jetta SE (auto)! It's great to hear that your wife enjoyed driving it and that you were both pleased with the car. It's impressive that after 50,000 miles, the car has not required any repairs and has only needed regular maintenance. With its cavernous trunk and loaded features, it sounds like the Jetta was a great choice for you. The car's fuel efficiency is also impressive, with up to 35 mpg on the highway. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the Jetta!

  2. Jessie Grady 2025-02-22

    Vehicle year: 2003

Hi there! I noticed that there aren't any reviews for the diesel version, and many people seem to be concerned about the MPG. I just wanted to share my experience with the TDI Wagon - my family has been driving it for 225k miles and it reliably gets 35-38 mpg on the highway, depending on how you drive. We've only had to replace 2 alternators (one died and the replacement died under warranty), and we've had to clean the carbon out of the engine once. Overall, it's been a great experience and driving it feels just like a gasoline car. Thanks for reading!

  3. Blake Kiehn 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2011

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a TDI Sportwagen! It's great to hear that you're already impressed with the build quality, handling, responsiveness, and power of the TDI. Even though you can't compare the 2011 model to prior models, it's still amazing to hear about the upgrade it provides from your prior vehicle, the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. The TDI Sportwagen feels larger but is actually several inches shorter than the Grand Am, which is impressive. The DSG transmission is butter-smooth and relatively aggressive driving is still averaging 30+mpg, which is 5 better than conservative driving on the Grand Am. The interior is surprisingly roomy as well; it's great to hear that you're 6'1'' 260 and don't feel cramped in the least. It sounds like the TDI Sportwagen is a great long haul car!

I recently rented a brand new Jetta for a 10-day Alaskan vacation with my wife and adult daughter. We put around 700 miles on the car and overall, I was impressed with this premium sedan. Although the interior could have been more luxurious, the trunk was spacious enough to fit three large roller cases with some room to spare. Loading and unloading would have been easier with a lower lip, but the spring-loaded trunk lid was a nice touch. My daughter, who is 6-foot tall, had plenty of legroom in the backseat, and we all had enough space to store our road-trip essentials. We took a 300-mile drive from Anchorage to Valdez and back, cruising at speeds mostly in the 60s and 70s. To our surprise, we received an impressive 42 mpg, which was fantastic. The tiny 4-cylinder turbo never lacked power, and using manumatic for engine braking on downgrades was a breeze. The steering felt fine on the highway, but a bit lifeless around town. The ride was stately and composed, which was perfect for our family trip. The car felt a step or two above its class, which was impressive. Although this was a base model, I appreciated having Apple CarPlay for navigation. It was my first experience with the app, and although I couldn't find a way to zoom in and out on the nav screen, it was still a great feature. The base audio was adequate, and the base cloth seats were plain in appearance but comfortable on our 5-hour trips. I didn't find the need for a lumbar support control. Overall, I think this car deserved a more upscale dash, like the Golf's.That said, the controls are clear and feel good. The steering wheel looks quite nice with well-laid out controls, especially for the cruise control and gauge-cluster display. If I were to own this car, I would quickly stitch on a leather wrap for the rim. I am a big fan of the Mazda3 for this class, and it may still be my choice. However, the more efficient Jetta may be my choice if my daily driving were significantly longer.

It's great to hear that your wife has always been a fan of VWs! When her '88 Fox GL wagon finally gave up, you decided to buy this car, and it sounds like it was a great choice. The Trek edition is particularly stunning, with its flat 5-spoke 14
