Volkswagen Jetta problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta is a popular compact sedan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Power Window Failure: Power window failure is often due to a failed window regulator, which will need to be replaced. This issue affects 2010, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 90,000 miles.
  • General Electrical Issues: These issues can be difficult to diagnose and are often caused by ground wiring problems under the battery. This issue affects many models, including 2012, 2013, and 2014 with an average mileage of 150,000 miles.
  • Odor from HVAC Vents: This issue is caused by condensation in the heater case and AC (HVAC) system after the car has been sitting idle for 2 hours or more. It affects 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 50,000 miles.
  • Faulty Stereo System: This problem is particularly common in the 2010 Jetta, where many drivers have reported that the car stereo simply died.
  • Transmission Failure: This issue is common in the 2006 Jetta, where many drivers have reported problems shifting and getting stuck in neutral between 85k and 110k mileage.
  • ABS Module Failure: This problem is particularly severe in the 2009 Jetta, where the failing Antilock Braking System (ABS) has led to numerous accidents or near-accidents.
  • Clock Spring Failure: This problem affects Volkswagen owners, causing the driver's side airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls to become disabled. This issue has been ongoing for years, with a recall that was first issued in 2013 still under investigation.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: This problem affects Volkswagen coils, causing the engine to suddenly lose power. This can lead to shaking or hesitation and leave the driver in a vulnerable position.
  • Oil Sludge in the 1.8L Turbo Engine: This issue affected VW's 1.8-liter turbocharged engine from 1997 to 2005, and resulted in a class-action lawsuit due to the tiny 3.7-quart oil capacity that couldn't compensate for the engine's heat generation.
  • Diesel Emissions Scandal: Volkswagen has admitted to using a defeat device on its supposedly 'clean diesel' vehicles to skirt around US emissions standards.

These issues can affect the reliability and safety of the Volkswagen Jetta, and it's important for owners to be aware of them. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent some of these problems, but others may require more extensive repairs or replacements.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: 3VWNM7BUXNM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My car only had twelve thousand miles on it when the problem started with the rear brakes. They were at an eight and in less than two weeks time they started dragging not fully disengaging and went down to a one. Screeching. I looked it up and seems to be a common problem. If it is common and VW is aware of it not only affecting my specific model but other models as well. I believe it should be addressed and figure out a way to stop it. It messes with my fuel economy as well as goes thru pads way sooner than what they should. Which is gonna be costly over time.

Volkswagen Jetta 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
  • VIN: 3VWD17AJ6FM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My Volkswagen vehicle (Jetta Model 2015, MOdel 4DJSA, VIN [XXX] ) had a first event on [XXX] where the car suddenly stop in the middle of [XXX]. The car was taken to Volkswagen at Inver Grove and the cause was related to failure in a piston. The car was fixed without cost as it was covered by the guarantee of the vehicle. Again, around [XXX], the car again suddenly stopped working and needed to be thawed to Volkswagen at Inver Grove, the diagnosis done was extreme misfires on all cylinders that cause the car to die while in operation. The root cause was due to excessive oil inside the cylinder. In this occasion, the repair would not be covered under the guarantee and thus the option provided was to replace the motor at an estimated cost of $11,000 USD which is above the cost of the vehicle. It is important to notice that the car was routinely checked and serviced by Volkswagen at Inver Grove during the time we have owned the vehicle. There were not diagnostic tools that we could have to address this issue, to our knowledge there is nothing we did to cause this catastrophic failure. This recurrent incident could be likely a manufacturing issue and thus it is not caused by the user. The damage of the cylinder was not isolated to just one, all four have the same issue. Our car is currently parked (we are paying storage insurance on it) and we cannot use it. Our ask is for Volkswagen to repair the vehicle at no cost to us as we were not at fault for this issue. We kindly ask you for your support on this matter. Respectfully. [XXX] . INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Volkswagen Jetta 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-26
  • VIN: 3VWLL7AJ9DM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2013 Jetta TDI with 92k miles. I am the third owner of this car which has been regularly maintained since new with all service records, including a 2019 emissions modification per VW recall. I bought this vehicle less than a year ago. My son was driving to work when the car shut off without warning. He was able to restart it and park safely and had it towed home. After replacing the battery and a fuse, the car continued to show a code for the ECM Power Relay Load Circuit . We took it to the mechanic to have it inspected, and learned that the high pressure fuel pump had imploded and metal shavings were found throughout the entire fuel system. This is evidently a common and very costly issue that VW has an obligation to fix. They knowingly continue to use a defective part that is essentially a ticking time bomb without regard to the owners safety and the financial ramifications of the repair. All VW vehicles with this defect should be covered by VW, not just selected model years and models. This causes catastrophic damage and VW is completely negligent by not doing what is right by the customer. The VW dealer quoted a $9,000. repair and VW North America declined any assistance with the vehicle. The car is not worth that, and it would be absurd to pay out of pocket for the repair; especially since VW continues to use a defective designed HPFP that can eventually fail again. VW was selective in the model years that they recalled, but only after the parts failed. They should have applied the recall and repairs to ALL vehicles proactively. I now have a 2013 paperweight in my driveway. The reason I purchased this specific car was for the longevity that diesels are known for. What a shame that VW does not rectify the situation in lieu of the previous diesel scandal. I'll be going back to Volvo or Subaru, two companies that I have had great experiences with, both in safety and reliability. VW should do the right thing, but I guess that's of no importance anymore.

Volkswagen Jetta 2011
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
  • VIN: 3VWDZ7AJ9BM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Component/System Failure/Malfunction: ignition switch and starter, possibly transmission Yes, available for inspection upon request. Car has randomly stalled while in motion; ignition and starter switch have been replaced as well as microswitch panel - yet problem persists. Power steering shuts down, steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn. Have to put car in neutral, typically, and try to restart while in motion. Has happened over 100 times; replaced alternator as well. Battery was replaced, brand new, yet was drained multiple times - recharged at Autozone. Vehicle was brought to Larry H. Miller Volkswagen - was advised the problem was fixed, as well as recall repairs (microswitch), paid for the service, went to leave dealership and problem immediately happened again. Complete shut off. Would stay running a little longer while in neutral or AC on. When the vehicle stalls the only light that comes on is the battery light. All other lights and systems work. Ran diagnostic codes through personal mechanic, friend, and dealership... Code states "Key/Ignition/Computer" but unsure what specifically. The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta also does not have the original key fob. May be improper programming? Continued to research all other recalls, services have been completed and yet the problem persists.

Latest negative Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Ulices Jast 2025-09-29

    Vehicle year: 2000

I really enjoyed this car! When I drove it off the lot, it only had 8 miles on it, and it was still going strong when it was retired at 100K. Despite driving it like a high school kid, I managed to get an impressive 45 mpg. I took great care of it, making sure to change the synthetic oil twice a year and taking it in for regular dealer maintenance. I even managed to go 90K miles on the original timing belt, which is recommended to be changed at 60K. I tried to be gentle with it to improve the mpg, but it actually got worse. It seemed to prefer going to redline on every shift! I would have kept driving it and expected to go another 100K if my daughter hadn't totaled it (thankfully, she only suffered bumps and bruises).

  2. Ken Blick 2025-09-23

    Vehicle year: 1998

There's no denying that the car is a blast to drive, but unfortunately, the cost of maintenance can be quite high if you go through the dealership. Repairs like water pumps, belts, and anything else that requires more than three hours of labor can really add up. As mentioned earlier, I've had some issues with my sunroof, window regulators, moldings, CD changer, fog lights, and even my engine. It's been a bit of a headache, but I'm hopeful that things will improve. Overall, the car has been a mixed bag, but I still enjoy driving it.

  3. Mckenzie Wolf 2025-09-22

    Vehicle year: 2010

I have a 2010 Wolfsburg Jetta with the 2.0T engine and the DSG. It's loaded with leather, sunroof, and heated seats. I fell in love with it at first sight. It's in mint condition with only 78k miles and I've had it for a little over a year now. I purchased it from Indiana and it's actually my first car. My parents purchased me a 2004 GLI which I completely fell in love with. After purchasing 3 newer BMWs and totaling a 335i, I felt coming back to Volkswagen would be an inexpensive and fun vehicle that I could drive for a couple of years. And I was right! I love the performance of this vehicle. It will get up and go and feels like it has endless power on tap, especially in S mode. It's great for road trips. However, I feel that the gas mileage is subpar, but that's probably because I run regular in it. The brakes are mushy, which I'm not used to coming from a BMW, and they scare me sometimes in situations when traffic has come to a sudden halt. I've flushed the brakes and taken the car to Volkswagen here in New Jersey for all my services, and they say my brakes are fine. I've also had multiple oil issues since day one, which has been quite frustrating. It leaks oil in my driveway. I've had the oil pressure valve replaced, the main seal job done (which required the engine to be taken out), and the vacuum leak replaced. Of course, I take it to Volkswagen because I'm scared of anyone else working on the vehicle and it not being done properly. I purchased it with 79k miles and now have 92k miles. I've also had transmission issues which used to get worse in the summer time. The transmission would jump and shake the car and would get worse if I was in stop and go traffic. It scared me to the point of me not wanting to drive it anymore. It seems as though the DSG services were never done by the previous owner.I recently had my VW serviced for $400 and it has considerably improved. Although the engine is still loud, I have gotten used to it. I remember my 2004 GLI was also loud and sounded like a diesel truck. Unfortunately, I had an issue where my key got stuck in the vehicle and the car would not turn off. The police had to turn my car off with pliers and broke my key in half, leaving me stranded in Philadelphia. I had to have it towed to the dealer and they needed to replace the ignition column as well as order a key from Germany. While I have been disappointed with the quality of Volkswagen, I must say that the seats are very comfortable. As someone who is 5'7 and 124 pounds, I find Volkswagen to have the most comfortable seats. I also love how hot the heated seats get in the winter time. The leather is of very good quality and looks very nice as well. Unfortunately, in the last 5 months alone, I have spent well over $5,000 in repair bills. The ride is a bit bumpy, but the car handles New Jersey-Philadelphia potholes very well. I also think the headlights are very bright and I usually don't need to turn on my high beams on dark county roads, but when I do, I can see everything. Overall, I will continue to drive my Volkswagen, especially since I paid cash for it, until I feel tired of it. It's hard to get tired or bored of driving a Volkswagen, but I am tired of the repair costs.

  4. Florian Ferry 2025-09-21

    Vehicle year: 1997

Great little car! It has plenty of power and torque for a 2.0 gas engine, and gets great gas economy at 30+ mpg. The sporty handling is a plus, and there's plenty of room for a small car. However, it's not the best in bad weather, and some of the plastic parts are a bit cheap. The power windows can also have some problems. Repairs can be expensive if you have a shop do them. Despite these issues, I traded it in with 170K miles due to bad rust on the body, but it still ran great!

  5. King Zemlak 2025-09-20

    Vehicle year: 1995

This car is a blast to drive, but it can be a bit pricey to maintain. I purchased it from a friend who had bought it brand new, but unfortunately it had to endure a harsh New England winter without being driven, which took a toll on it. Now that I live on the West Coast, I've found that the cost of repairs can be quite high (over 3K for a new clutch, timing wheel and belt, ball bearings, rotors, brake pads, muffler, fuel line, and air filter). If you're considering buying a Volkswagen/Audi, make sure to take it to a mechanic who specializes in German cars. I had some trouble finding a good mechanic since I was only familiar with Japanese and American cars, but once I found the right one, things went much more smoothly.

  1. Leland Hodkiewicz 2025-10-02

    Vehicle year: 2011

After conducting extensive research on various car brands such as Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, and Ford, my wife and I finally decided on the Vdub. She was particularly drawn to the lightly covered leatherette, Bluetooth, and touchscreen radio, which seamlessly interfaces with her iPhone and satellite radio. The car is incredibly comfortable for her 45-minute commute, even more so than my 2009 BMW 335i. Additionally, it boasts impressive fuel efficiency, with about 32 mpg in mixed traffic conditions after 1800 miles. However, we did encounter an issue with the injectors after 1750 miles, which left her stranded. Although the dealership eventually fixed the problem, we had to fight for a loaner or rental for the day and a half that the car was off the road.

  2. Consuelo Huel 2025-10-02

    Vehicle year: 1994

I recently purchased this car from a post on Craigs List for $850 cash. Although the gauges did not work, the a/c had been bypassed, and the catalytic converter was shot, the car ran well. It has around 135k miles on it. I have been replacing some minor things that should have been fixed or replaced during the car's 14 years of life. However, the parts aren't that expensive if you buy them used from the internet. It's important to maintain Jettas to get the most out of them. I plan to drive this Jetta until it gets tired, and it gives 100% every day. Overall, this is a great car. Thumbs up! I will always drive VW.

  3. Bernhard Jenkins 2025-09-29

    Vehicle year: 1994

I currently have over 251,000 miles on my 1994 Jetta...and I absolutely love it! It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned, and I trust it more than my other car with only 40,000 miles on it.

  4. Miguel Gislason 2025-09-27

    Vehicle year: 1995

I have had my car for a little over 4 years now and absolutely love it! I know many people who have bought new VW's, but I still want to keep my 1995 model. It has had little or no problems and handles well. It is still running strong with 120,000 miles on it.

  5. Rogers Mraz 2025-09-26

    Vehicle year: 2004

The GLI VR6 is a very comfortable car to drive. It's loaded with leather and all the features that make driving it so much fun. The 6-speed manual shift is incredibly smooth and provides great acceleration. With 200 horsepower, it's a pretty peppy car. As someone who has owned several BMWs (including a 540 and a BMW 330), I can confidently say that the fun factor of the GLI VR6 is close to that of a Bimmer, but at only 1/3 of the cost. The only drawback is that the gas mileage is so-so for a 6-speed. I was expecting to get about 28-33 mpg, but I average around 25 mpg. My 330i (6-speed) averages around 28, so I was expecting the VW to be equal if not better.
