The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-24
  • VIN: 3VWPF71K45M
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: STARTED HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS (RANDOM DASHBOARD LIGHTS, DOORS, LOCKS, WINDOWS WOULDN'T WORK, KEY FOB BATTERY DIED, ETC) THEN I HAD TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. CONTINUED ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH NEW BATTERY, PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW/DOOR WOULDN'T OPERATE OR WORK AT ALL. NEEDED MASTER KEY FOB TO LOCK DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR BUT ALL OTHER DOORS WOULDN'T LOCK WITH FOB. NEXT, I AM HAVING ISSUES WITH THE CAR NOT STARTING, PUT ANOTHER BATTERY IN IT. FROM THERE RANDOM DASHBOARD LIGHTS, DINGING WITH DRL AND FIRST FEW MINUTES OF OPERATING VEHICLE, AND AIRBAGS LIGHTS ARE ON. MY MECHANIC SENDS ME TO A MECHANIC SHOP THAT SPECIALIZES IN VW. MECHANIC REPLACES WINDOW MANAGER AND DRIVER SIDE DOOR HARNESS. STILL FIND ISSUES WITH AIRBAGS SO I TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP IN ST PETERS MO DURING A SNOW STORM. HAND THEM ALL MY PAPERWORK, THEY GO IN AND FIND THAT MY CAR IS BEING WORKED ON AND SEE THAT THEIR ARE SPLICES, CONNECTIONS BUTTED, SO THEY "FIX" THE AIRBAGS AND SEND ME ON MY WAY. HOWEVER, I HAVE A TODDLER IN THE BACKSEAT AND SHE WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE DOORS WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, THE WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING, ETC. DEALERSHIP CANNOT SPEAK TO OTHER MECHANIC SHOP'S WORK SO THEY DID THE RECALLS NEEDED (AIRBAGS) AND REPLACED THE HARNESS, APPARENTLY AGAIN. I HAVE ALL THE RECEIPTS FROM THE WORK, ALL THE PARTS ARE IN MY TRUNK OF MY CAR, ANOTHER APPOINTMENT TO SEE WHAT THE ISSUE IS. CAR APPEARS TO BE STUCK IN SECURITY MODE BUT DOESN'T PROPERLY LOCK, NOT ABLE TO USE CHILD LOCK, AND UNABLE TO PROTECT VEHICLE SAFELY WITH PROPER LOCKING MECHANISM. I DON'T FEEL SAFE IF THERE IS AN INTRUDER OR IF MY TODDLER WERE TO TRY THIS STUNT AGAIN, ALSO CONCERNED OF THE FUEL ISSUES I'VE BEEN HAVING. REPLACED MY GAS CAP IN HOPES I WOULDN'T SEE LOSS OF FUEL, AND THE CAR HAS A SLIGHT OIL LEAK THAT NO MECHANIC CAN SEEM TO FIND. UNABLE TO ATTACH PAPERWORK AS THE DEALERSHIP HAS IT AT THIS TIME.

Negative 2005 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Candelario Reichel 2025-01-24

When it comes to car problems, it's important for dealerships and companies to handle them with care and concern for the consumer. Unfortunately, my 2005 Jetta GLI has been in the shop seven times in less than 7,000 miles and the problem remains unresolved. Despite Volkswagen of America claiming the issue belongs to the dealership and the dealership claiming it belongs to the company, I remain confident that a solution can be found. While communication with a customer representative can be frustrating at times, I trust that the service manager will take charge and resolve the issue with their expertise in Volkswagen products.

My 2005 Jetta has 87000 miles and is serviced regularly. However, the timing chain, gears, spark plugs, and coil pack all failed last week. The dealership quoted me $3700 to fix it, but I have decided to purchase a new car instead. Despite my love for the design and drive of the Jetta, the low trade-in offer of $1500 from the dealership has convinced me to switch to a Toyota. I am confident that my new car will provide me with the reliability and value that I deserve.

The issues with this vehicle are well-documented, with numerous reports of wiring and transmission problems. Despite this, the VW dealership denies any knowledge of the issue and simply recommends a new transmission. It is important to be aware of these issues before considering a purchase.

I drove my Jetta for 4 years and put over 230000 km on it. Despite the wear and tear, it remained remarkably tight. I did have to replace some parts, including 5 wheel bearings, a dozen headlight bulbs, a new turbo for $2400, a fuel pump for $550, a turbo hose, various front end parts, and e-brake cables. Although the fuel mileage is good and you feel like you're getting ahead, the $100 oil changes and $300 every 32000km for fuel filters can add up. I also experienced some trouble with the electrical systems, such as intermittent issues with the headlights and door lock system. At times, I felt like I owned HERBIE. However, everyone loves the heated seats, which take about 30 minutes of driving to actually heat up in a TDI. Overall, I'm considering switching to Toyota, but I'll always appreciate my time with the Jetta.

I bought this car mainly for its fuel efficiency. However, I found that even an oil change costs $85 and is recommended every 3000 miles. The front seats are comfortable, but the car only feels good on straight roads like those in Florida. Sharp curves feel like falling off a cliff. Fortunately, I didn't have it for long enough to experience any mechanical issues. However, the belly pan cover alone cost $460, which is a lot for just a piece of plastic from underneath. The inside of the car is very loud, and the glove box and trunk always had issues closing. The only good part of the car is its fuel efficiency. If you are a heavy-footed driver, you'll pay a high price at the VW service where the parts are expensive. I switched to a Ford Taurus, and it's a completely different experience. The ride is smoother, and it has a sporty feel. I'm very happy with the Ford, and it gets close to 30mpg on the highway.

Positive 2005 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Vance Gutmann 2025-02-13

I was searching for a reliable and fuel-efficient car that would provide a comfortable ride for its passengers. After testing several small fuel-efficient cars, including hybrids, I found that the TDI Jetta was the best in terms of build quality, performance, and ride. It comes with a lot of standard equipment, such as all-around airbags and four-wheel disc brakes. While it may not be the fastest car off the line, the Jetta's turbo diesel engine can keep up with the best on the expressway. It has an impressive fuel economy, with a best MPG of 47 and a worst MPG of 38 in the city with A/C on. Additionally, insurance costs are much lower than those of hybrids, resulting in a savings of $400 to $800 per year.

I am the first owner of my 2005 Jetta Diesel, which is a station wagon with an automatic transmission. I travel from the North East to Florida each year, so it has avoided winter salty roads. I replaced the timing belt at 85,000 miles to be on the safe side. The rubber on my struts will need to be replaced due to normal wear. Surprisingly, I still have the original brake pads at 90,000 miles. At every oil change, I expect to be told it's time to change them, but so far, I haven't been. The fuel economy is impressive, averaging 34 to 39 miles per gallon. I can even get 42 miles on a gallon if I drive at my RPM sweet spot, which is 38 to 41 miles an hour. At that speed, you will get the 42 per gallon. Would I buy this vehicle again? YOU BETCHA I would! I paid $21,500 in January of 2005.

  3. Virgil Kovacek 2024-11-05

We traded our 03 Passat for the Jetta TDI and we couldn't be happier with our decision. It's an absolute pleasure to drive, although being a small wagon, it doesn't offer a lot of room. The only minor issue we've encountered is the smell of diesel fuel on our hands after filling up, but it's hardly a problem at all. The only major issue we've had was when a rock hit the roof and caused a dent, but thankfully it missed the windshield. Overall, we highly recommend the Jetta TDI!

  4. Hermann Bode 2024-10-24

Other than a minor issue with a sensor, this car is absolutely amazing! Driving it is an absolute blast. You can sit back and cruise in comfort, or lean forward and blast past almost anything on the road. Ours is a 2005.5, which is the newer model. It came with all the features of the newer models, but at a lower price. You simply can't go wrong with a European import!

  5. Mohammad Trantow 2024-08-16

I chose the diesel option for its super mileage and I am not disappointed. My commute is 30 miles each way, with 90% highway speeds, and I average 48 mpg! On a trip to Florida, I got in the low 50's driving 70 miles per hour. While the front seats are comfortable, the back seats may be too small for larger adults. Additionally, the heat and cooling controls are located too low, which may require you to take your eyes off the road to adjust them.
