1992 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 1992 Volkswagen Jetta problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Volkswagen Jetta 1992, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Engine Misfiring: Owners have reported issues with engine misfiring, which can lead to a loss of power and performance. This problem is often caused by failures in spark plugs, ignition coils, and ignition wires. When these components fail, the engine may shake harshly, stall, or exhibit rough idling. Additionally, there have been concerns about the engine light illuminating on the dashboard, excessive oil consumption, catalytic converter failure, and overheating.
- Coolant and Oil Leaks: Another common problem is coolant and oil leaks in the 1992 VW Jetta. Owners have reported coolant leaking from the bottom of the engine along the passenger end, accompanied by hissing sounds from under the hood. These leaks can lead to engine damage and overheating if not addressed promptly. Repairs for these leaks can be costly, with potential expenses reaching at least $2,500.
- Clutch Issues: Many owners have experienced problems with the clutch in the 1992 VW Jetta. Complaints include the clutch pedal getting stuck, gears not engaging properly, and a charring smell emanating from under the hood. Some owners have had to have their clutches repaired multiple times due to persistent issues with engagement and disengagement.
- Electrical Problems: The 1992 VW Jetta has been plagued by various electrical issues, such as defective wipers, intermittent door locks, malfunctioning cruise control systems, faulty ventilation, heating, and air conditioning settings. These electrical problems can be challenging to diagnose and often manifest as intermittent issues related to ground wiring problems.
- Power Window Failures: Owners have reported power window failures in the 1992 VW Jetta, with one or more door power windows failing due to issues with the window regulator. This problem can lead to inconvenience and safety concerns, especially if windows get stuck in open or closed positions. Repairs for power window failures can be moderately expensive, with costs ranging from $312 to $475 for window regulator replacement.
These common problems reported by owners of the Volkswagen Jetta 1992 highlight the need for regular maintenance and prompt repairs to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle. Addressing these issues promptly can help prevent further damage and ensure a safer driving experience.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-07-02
- Fire: 1
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: 2025 HRS: TRAFFIC WAS GENTLE, WITH TRAILERS ON THE RIGHT AND SMALLER CARS AND TRUCKS PASSING ON THE LEFT THAT DAY. I WAS TRAVELING TO CROWN POINT FROM LAFAYETTE USING HIGHWAY 65 NORTH (60-65 MPH -WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC), WHEN 3/4 MILES AWAY FROM RENESELAER THE ACCELERATOR CABLE FROZE STILL HALFWAY. IT WOULD NOT RELEASE TO THE FULL POSITION, NOR WILL IT DEPRESS PAST HALFWAY. AT THAT MOMENT, THE ENGINE REVVED AND STARTED SPEEDING UP. I WATCHED WITH PANIC AS MY JETTA'S SPEEDOMETER READ 67, 70, 72 AND 75 PROGRESSIVELY. TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN, I STEPPED ON THE BREAKS GRADUALLY; WHICH HELPED A LITTLE, BUT NOT BY MUCH. I HAD JUST PASSED THE "1/4 MILE TO RENESELEAR" EXIT NUMBER 215, WHICH MERGES WITH HIGHWAY 114. SEEING THE EXIT AHEAD (AND STILL STEPPING ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW ME DOWN), I TURNED INTO THE EXIT AND HALFWAY THROUGH THE EXIT, I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND ROLLED TO A STOP AT THE STOP SIGN ON TOP OF THE HILL EXIT. BEFORE I STOPPED COMPLETELY, I BEGAN TO SMELL MY BRAKE PADS SMELTING. AND WHEN I DID ROLL TO STOP, THERE WAS SMOKE RISING FROM THE FRONT WELLS. I GOT OUT AND POPPED THE HOOD TO INSPECT FURTHER AND TO CHECK MY TIRES. AS I BENT DOWN TO CHECK THE WHEELS, I NOTICED MY ROTORS WERE BOTH RED HOT. CHECKING THE LEFT WHEEL, AFTER INSPECTING THE RIGHT, REVEALED A SMALL LIP OF FLAME RIGHT NEXT TO THE BRAKE ROTOR. I THEN GRABBED A FULL BOTTLE OF WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID AND EMPTIED IT ON BOTH ROTORS. THE THOUGHT OF LOSING MY BELOVED CAR TO A FIRE AND A HUGH EXPLOSION -MY GAS TANK WAS COMPLETELY FULL AT THE MOMENT- WAS MORBIDLY PETRIFYING. THE FIRE WAS QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED AFTER I POURED IT ON THE FLAMES. TO MY WEST, ABOUT ~ 1000 METERS, WAS A SHELL GAS STATION WITH KELLY'S TIRES RIGHT BEFORE IT, WHERE I ASKED FOR HELP. A KIND TECHNICIAN -FROM KELLY'S TIRES- INFORMED ME, AFTER INSPECTING MY CAR, THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ACCELERATOR CABLE BEFORE ANY WORK IS DONE. I WOULD NEED TO SPECIAL ORDER THE PART AND THEN BRING IT TO THEM ON OR AFTER TUESDAY (7-6-2004. *AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-02-04
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: FOR OVER A YEAR NOW, MY CAR WILL JUST "DIE" WHILE I AM DRIVING IT. I HAVE BEEN IN ALMOST 2 ACCIDENTS NOW BECAUSE OF IT. IT DOESN'T GIVE ANY WARNING THAT IT IS GOING TO DIE. I JUST NOTICE IT WHEN THE "DUMY LIGHTS" COME ON OR WHEN I LOOSE MY STEERING. IT CAN HAPPEN WHEN THE CAR IS HOT OR COLD, AT ANY SPEED. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER. SOMETIMES I CAN TELL, BECAUSE THE RPM WILL DROP TO ALMOST 0. BUT USUALLY NOTHING HAPPENS. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER 7 OR 8 TIMES OVER THE LAST YEAR AND THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. THEY HAVE GONE AS FAR AS SAYING THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, I HAVE SEVERAL WITNESS'S THAT HAVE BEEN WITH ME IN MY CAR THAT CAN DISPUTE THIS. I HAVE HAD MY CAR DIE AS MUCH AS 7X IN ONE DAY. I HAVE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY BASICALLY DID NOTHING ABOUT IT. THEY JUST CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY WERE TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT AND THAT WAS THE END OF IT. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AGAIN AND ASKED IF THEY COULD SEND AN ENGINEER OUT TO LOOK AT THE CAR AS IT DIDN'T SEEM THE TECHNICIANS AT THE DEALER WERE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT AND THEY TOLD ME "NO" IT IS AT THE SOLE DISCRETION OF THE SERVICE MANAGER TO DECIDE THIS. SO, TILL NOW, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, OR EVEN DETECT WHERE IT IS COMING FROM AND THEY HAVE NO INTENTIONS TO KEEP LOOKING. IN THE MEANTIME, I AM DRIVING A "DEATH TRAP". THE CAR IS TOTALLY UNSAFE. 3 WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT THIS CAR I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS. IT IS A LEMON AND THE DEALER BASICALY ADMITTED IT, BUT WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. IN THE PAST 10 YEARS THAT I HAVE HAD THE CAR. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN FOR SERVICE AROUND 45 TIMES. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THIS?*AK

The 1991 Volkswagen Jetta GL has been an excellent car. We have taken great care of it since day one by 'babying' it, using only synthetic motor oil every 5k miles, and premium fuel. Recently, our mechanic, who is a friend and has 45 years of experience with VW's, changed the valve cover gasket and upon inspection, he was amazed. He said, 'This engine doesn't look like it has 205k miles on it. It looks more like 75k.' But don't just take our word for it, you be the judge. Thank you!
-
I bought this car about 2 years ago and I will be the first to admit that it has had its fair share of problems. Although that was probably because of all the miles on it, I would still recommend this car to anyone. It has made me love to drive, even in traffic. Having this car has been an extremely fun experience.

The 1992 Volkswagen Jetta is a really reliable car. It's great to work on yourself. I've owned Fords, Mazdas, and Nissans, but VWs outlast them all. I love this car!
-
This is my fourth VW and I have been pleased with all of them. Working on my own vehicle has been a breeze with Volkswagen's cars.
-
The Jetta has been a reliable car for me. I have never had any major issues with the engine or transmission, only a few typical things like the alternator. I recently had to take it to the shop for the first time in the three years that I've owned it, but it was nothing too serious. The interior and body are of good quality build. It's impressive that it still gets never less than 30mpg and factory stats @ 12yrs, which is quite an achievement. Although it was built in Mexico, 99% of the parts are from Germany. I have never been left stranded and I don't expect it to happen anytime soon.

My car seems to be at the mechanic's every other week. The motor is great, but everything else seems to fall apart. I've had to replace almost everything, and now I'm just waiting to see what's going to break next...
Nelson Rempel 2024-04-19
Overall, it sounds like you've had a pretty reliable vehicle! It's great to hear that only minor repairs were necessary.
Eduardo Kautzer 2024-04-12
The gas mileage is great and it's quite roomy with three kids. However, I'm a bit disappointed with the power and wonder what happened to German quality. I found out that this edition was not built in Germany and the transmission is smaller than my 87' model, even though they are both 1.8 liters. I still love VW's and currently own a 96 model. Although, I would prefer to have another 87' Wolvesburg edition. I hope VW brings back the style, comfort, simplicity, better gas mileage, and most importantly, MADE IN GERMANY instead of the US.
