2022 Volkswagen Jetta problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2022 Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta, introduced in 1979, has been a popular compact car offering a blend of style, performance, and comfort. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to issues and complaints from owners. This article will discuss some of the most common problems with the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta, based on complaints from owners.

  • Window Regulator Failure: The window regulator is responsible for moving the window up and down. In the 2001 Jetta, this component has been known to fail, causing windows to become stuck or move erratically. A mechanic will need to replace the window regulator, which is a relatively straightforward task.
  • Faulty Coil Packs: Coil packs are responsible for producing the high-voltage current that fires the spark plugs. In the 2020 Jetta, faulty coil packs have been reported to cause sudden power loss, shaking, or hesitation. This issue affects a small number of 2020 Jettas, but it can lead to significant engine performance issues.
  • Evaporative Emission Issues: Evaporative emission issues have been reported in the 2022 Jetta, with some drivers experiencing constant check engine light (CEL) warnings and issues with cruise control. These problems are typically related to the vehicle's evaporative emission system, which is designed to capture and store fuel vapors to prevent them from being released into the atmosphere.
  • Brake Pedal Vibration: Some 2022 Jetta owners have reported a vibration in the brake pedal. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a defective brake booster, which can make the vehicle unsafe to drive. In some cases, this problem has been resolved by replacing the brake booster.
  • Whining Noise from Below Rear Seats: A whining noise from below the rear seats has been reported in the 2022 Jetta. This issue is often related to a faulty evaporation temperature sensor, which can be resolved by installing a new vacuum hose with the sensor.
  • Travel Assist Light: The travel assist light, which indicates the status of the vehicle's driver assistance systems, has been known to come on constantly while driving in some 2022 Jettas. This issue is often related to a defective steering wheel, which may require replacement.
  • Rear Brake Pads: Some 2022 Jetta owners have reported that their rear brake pads are worn down to 7mm, which is considered near replacement. This issue is common in newer VWs, even for those who do not drive aggressively.

These are some of the most common problems reported by 2022 Volkswagen Jetta owners. While these issues can be frustrating, many of them can be addressed through repairs and maintenance. However, it is essential to consider these potential problems when purchasing a used Jetta, particularly when considering the vehicle's mileage and maintenance history.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
  • VIN: 3VWNM7BUXNM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My car only had twelve thousand miles on it when the problem started with the rear brakes. They were at an eight and in less than two weeks time they started dragging not fully disengaging and went down to a one. Screeching. I looked it up and seems to be a common problem. If it is common and VW is aware of it not only affecting my specific model but other models as well. I believe it should be addressed and figure out a way to stop it. It messes with my fuel economy as well as goes thru pads way sooner than what they should. Which is gonna be costly over time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
  • VIN: 3VWNM7BU6NM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: This vehicle has a "digital cockpit" without traditional analog gauges. It completely shut down on me while driving on the freeway, leaving me without a speedometer, and a red caution "do not drive" warning indicator. I have a video of this incident captured by my partner that I can share, as well as a static image, which I attach therein. Prior to this incident, it repeatedly shut down while driving, but in those cases would come back up in 5 to 10 seconds. This may have been a computer "crash" as it came back up with 0 on the trip odometers. The dealer seemingly fixed this problem with a reset process described in a TSB. In the most recent incident, the display never came back online, and I was unable to safely continue driving. There are also random issues with this display locking into "night" mode during the day, usually after backing out of a dark garage or going through a tunnel, which leaves the display impossible to read in bright sun. The only fix when this happens is to pull over, turn the car off, wait 5 minutes, and resume driving.

Dealer confirmed the issue but states there is no repair or known fix. Dealer said to use premium fuel which is not required by manufacturer. Problem still occurred with premium fuel. Several trips to two separate dealers and both state there is no fix for the dangerous issue just to keep driving it. The vehicle is available for inspection. Some where around Concord, NH a warning message in orange was displayed, “Engine speed max 4000” in center of display, an orange triangle with an “!” marked appeared just below the temperature gauge on left side of display, a yellow car with “!” on side appeared just below the estimated mileage remaining – it switched between that car and “EPC” cruse control was no longer available Stopped, checked the engine for over heating however it did not seem tooo hot, fans were not running (engine was off) Started again, lights were OFF. Rest of trip was on local roads so never tried cruse control. Left to return home around 2:00pm all warning lights OFF. Some where around Manchester, NH same thing happened plus orange picture of engine on right was illuminated, Cruse control would not maintain speed and then said unavailable. On hills vehicle would not move along with traffic even when foot was put to the floor. Drove directly to Colonial VW, did not shut vehicle OFF however nobody was available to read the computer codes. Scheduled appointment for Friday Driving home it was almost impossible to merge onto Route 93 even with accelerator pushed to floor. What ever the problem with your programming is the major fact that the vehicle is not able to keep up or merge with traffic even on local streets it a Major Hazard. VW may be concerned with saving their engine – I’m Concerned for my LIFE

2022 Volkswagen Jetta recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta.

2022-07-20
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 Golf GTI, Jetta GLI, Jetta NF, Arteon FL, Tiguan LWB, 2022 Taos, Jetta PA, Tiguan PA, 2021-2022 Atlas Cross Sport, and Atlas FL vehicles. The manufacturing process of the eMMC memory module in the infotainment system may cause the rearview camera image not to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
  • Consequence: A rearview camera that does not display an image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dealers will update the infotainment software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 16, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 91DV.

Negative 2022 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Vernon Lindgren 2024-11-28

I recently purchased a brand new Jetta in 22, after selling my eight-year-old Elantra. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the Jetta and have had to take it in for service and repairs more frequently than I ever did with my Elantra. As a result, I am quite disappointed with my purchase and would not recommend the VW Jetta.

  2. Cloyd Skiles 2024-11-20

The manual transmission is the only option for those who enjoy a fun driving experience. With the automatic transmission, the car will search for the right gear and then look for the V6 engine, which can be a bit of a letdown. However, the new gearbox has fixed the metal knocking sound that was present in previous models with less than 8 gears. While the Jetta 2020/2021 models may not be the most powerful, they still offer great gas mileage. The exterior design may not be anything special, but it has a classic look that some may appreciate. Before purchasing a Jetta, it's important to do your research and check out the dealer's reviews and mechanic shop. While VW may not be the most reliable brand, there are still many people who enjoy driving them. If you're looking for a cheap car, the VW Jetta may not be the best option. However, the Nissan Altima 2021 is a great alternative that offers a nice driving experience.

  3. Casey Heidenreich 2024-11-20

All wheel drive and more horsepower would have prevented me from getting stuck in the mud.

  4. Ernest Oberbrunner 2024-04-26

My car has less than 300 miles on it and it is a month old. I have identified a noise coming from the engine between 25-30 MPH when accelerating onto a highway or high speed roadway. This is a common issue with this model and can be easily resolved by a qualified mechanic.

  5. Flavio Tromp 2024-02-22

Around 6 months ago, I was in the market for a new car and was deciding between this car and the Honda Accord. I ultimately went with the Accord, but recently got into an accident and was given a Jetta as a rental. While I appreciate having a car to drive, I have to say that I'm not a fan of the Jetta. The car feels very cheap and plasticky on the inside, and I don't feel particularly safe or comfortable driving it. The acceleration and brakes are also not very smooth, which can make driving a bit of a challenge. Additionally, I've noticed that the car doesn't have much power, especially on the highway. That being said, I do appreciate the safety features that the car does have. Overall, I'm just not a fan of the Jetta and wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and smooth ride.

Positive 2022 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Narciso Hirthe 2024-11-16

Excellent driving and good on fuel economy,

  2. Davin Schultz 2024-09-08

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car, which I've driven for 4,000 kilometers. It's from the executive line and comes with a ton of options, including a sunroof. The Beats audio system is absolutely awesome, with plenty of bass and great sound quality. Driving the car is a pleasure, although the power is a tad lower than I expected. However, if you step on the gas, it will go. I really appreciate the four different car setups - eco, normal, sport, and custom - which allow me to change the engine and suspension feel to my liking. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and would definitely recommend it to others!

  3. Mackenzie Dietrich 2024-05-25

As a previous Mercedes Benz owner, I recently purchased my first Volkswagen Jetta. I am really impressed with the great gas mileage and the car's speed. It easily reaches 90+ on the highway and the drive is smooth. Even in the city, the drive is great. The interior is roomy with enough trunk space. The touch screen unit and digital display are easy to navigate and look fancy. Although I have the base model, it still comes with standard safety features such as blind spot monitoring, collision detection, and a backup camera. However, I do wish that the base model included leather heated seats and a sunroof.

  4. Johathan Hegmann 2024-04-08

I love the Jetta! I got my first one in late 2018 when the new model came out, and I just got another one when my lease came up in December. It's amazing! I call it Audi Light because it's peppy, responsive, and fun. Plus, it's comfortable and I feel like my family and I are safe in it. It has a sturdy feel to it.

  5. Silas Gibson 2024-04-04

My daughter and I are thrilled with this car!
