1996 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

STEERING PROBLEM

- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I OWN A 1996 VW JETTA GLS AND MY CAR SMOKES FROM MY STEERING WHEEL COLUMN. I WILL BE DRIVING AND OUT OF NO WHERE WHITE SMOKE POURS OUT OF THE COLUMN. I THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE OF MY HEADLIGHTS BEING ON BUT THEN NOTICED IT DOING IT WITHOUT THEM ON. IT EVEN DOES IT WHEN THE CAR IS OFF! THIS I FEEL AND MY FRIEND WHO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM IS A FIRE HAZARD AND COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. I CALLED A VW DEALERSHIP AND SPOKE TO THE MECHANIC AND HE TOLD ME HE FEARED FOR MY LIFE AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A FIRE HAZARD OR IT COULD CAUSE MY BREAKS AND OTHER THINGS ON MY CAR TO FAIL. I COULD BE DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT 65 AND MY CAR CAN JUST DIE. I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR TO 3 DIFFERENT MECHANICS FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THEY ALL SAID THEY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IT COULD BE . IN MY CASE NOTHING LEADS UP TO THIS HAPPENING IT JUST HAPPENS RANDOMLY AT ANYTIME WITH OR WITHOUT MY LIGHTS ON OR BLINKERS BEING ON. THIS IS STILL AN UNKNOWN CAUSE BUT VERY SCARY, EVEN SCARIER KNOWING ITS NOT JUST MY CAR. *TR

- Summary: DRIVING HOME FROM SCHOOL (12 MINUTE DRIVE) AT NIGHT AND THE AIR COMING FROM THE VENTS SMELLED FUNNY, LIKE COOLANT. I TURNED OFF THE FANS BUT STILL SMELLED FUNNY. I TURNED THE FANS BACK ON AND WHITE 'SMOKE' WAS COMING OUT OF THE VENTS AND IT SMELLED HEAVILY OF COOLANT. MY WINDSHIELD BEGAN TO FOG UP WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. I ROLLED DOWN MY WINDOWS AND SUNROOF AND TRIED EVERYTHING I COULD TO GET THE WINDOW TO DEFOG, BUT IT ONLY GOT WORSE. I COULD BARELY SEE AND FELT LIKE I WAS IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION SO I PULLED OFF ON THE NEAREST COUNTY ROAD. THE CAR BEGAN TO OVERHEAT AND I STILL COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING SO I OPENED THE DOOR AND DROVE TO A SAFE SPOT AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. FOUND OUT LATER THAT THERE WAS COOLANT ALL OVER ON THE FLOORBOARDS AND THAT THE HEATER CORE HAS FAILED. *JB

- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: WELL, ITS AN OLD CAR YES AND HAVEN'T HAD ANY SEVERE MALFUNCTIONS EXCEPT ON PRETTY MUCH EVERY LATCH MECHANISM ON THE CAR. CURRENTLY, THE TRUNK DOES NOT OPEN. THE LATCH IS BROKE AND WILL NOT OPEN WITH KEY PLACED IN IT OR WITH RELEASE BUTTON. TO OPEN IT, I HAVE TO LAY THE BACK SEATS DOWN AND CRAWL INTO THE TRUNK AND ACTIVATE THE EMERGENCY RELEASE MANUALLY. TO ADD TO THE MESS, BOTH REAR DOORS WILL OPEN BUT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL CLOSE AGAIN. I'VE HAD TO RIG A WIRE TO PULL THE LATCH INTO ITS LOCKED POSITION TO KEEP BOTH DOORS CLOSED. (RESULTING IN THE ONLY 4 DOOR COUPE I KNOW OF!) *TR

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-09-01
- VIN: 3VWRA81H8TM
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: IN LATE FEB 2005 PURCHASED A 1996 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA (WHICH WAS A CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE) AND IN (APPOX) SEPT 2005 WHILE DRIVING DOWN A PACKED FREEWAY DURING RUSH HOUR, IN THE MIDDLE LANE, THE HOOD OF MY VEHICLE FLEW UP. I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 60-65 MPH AND IT VISUALLY LOOKED LIKE A PIECE OF CARDBOARD CRUMPLING HOWEVER THE IMPACT WAS SO GREAT THAT IT CRACKED MY WINDSHIELD. I CONSIDER MYSELF AND THE PASSENGERS EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT WE WERE NOT INJURED AND/OR DID NOT CRASH. MY VEHICLE SUSTAINED TREMENDOUS BODY DAMAGE TO THE HOOD AND CAN NOT SHUT PROPERLY AND AS I MENTION PREVIOUSLY THE WINDSHIELD IS CRACKED ALL THE WAY ACROSS. I AM UNCERTAIN WHETHER OR NOT SIMILAR VEHICLES TO MINE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS BUT I FEEL THAT THIS WAS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT / FAILURE DUE TO THE FACT OF THE SAFETY LATCH MALFUNCTION. I AM NOT 100% SURE WHETHER OR NOT THE HOOD WAS NOT SHUT COMPLETELY BECAUSE I DID NOT PHYSICALLY CHECK IT BEFORE THE INCIDENT BUT REGARDLESS THAT IS WHY I THOUGHT SAFETY LATCHES WERE PUT INTO USE ON VEHICLE HOODS TO PREVENT SUCH DANGEROUS OCCURRENCES. *JB

- Summary: ON JANUARY 12, 2006, AS I WAS DRIVING MY CAR AT 65 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AN OPAQUE WHITE GAS WAS QUICKLY RELEASED FROM MY HEATER VENTS AND WITHIN SECONDS EFFECTIVELY TURNED THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT OF MY CAR INTO A GAS CHAMBER. THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE INCREASED AFTER I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY REMOVE THE VEHICLE OF THE HIGHWAY. MY CAR WAS SOLD WITH A PERMANENT MAINTENANCE FREE PINK VW ANTIFREEZE. THE DOCUMENTATION THAT CAME WITH THE CAR INDICATED THAT OTHER THAN TOPPING OFF THE ANTIFREEZE PERIODICALLY THAT NO MAINTENANCE WAS NECESSARY. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MY HEATER CORE FAILED; THE DEALER SAYS IT FAILED BECAUSE OF LACK OF MAINTENANCE. IF THE SYSTEM IS MAINTENANCE FREE THEN HOW CAN A COMPONENT FAIL BECAUSE OF LACK OF MAINTENANCE? I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN VANDALIZED, BUT THE DEALER DIFFERED. I WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY WARNINGS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS OCCURRING IN SERVICE BULLETINS OR ANY OTHER VW LITERATURE. IF THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF A HEATER CORE IS POSSIBLE DOESN'T THE MANUFACTURE HAVE A DUTY TO WARN THE PURCHASERS OF ITS PRODUCTS? *NM

IT RECOVERED BACK TO NORMAL RESPONSIVENESS AFTER HARD BRAKING FOR AT LEAST FIVE SECONDS IN THE FIRST INCIDENT AND ABOUT THREE SECOND IN THE SECOND. ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THE CRUISE CONTROL NEVER WORKED SINCE THE PURCHASE IN 1996.

I love driving my Jetta. It handles really well and has been a great car for myself and my family. We have put over 100,000 miles on it and have had no major problems. It handles excellently in the snow. It can take you all over the West coast and even Mexico. You'll love yours too.

Wow, it's great to hear that you've owned 4 Volkswagens! When it comes to servicing them, it's important to find a mechanic who really knows their stuff. Volkswagens are unique and require special attention. If you're up for it, learning how to work on your car yourself can be a fun and rewarding experience. It sounds like you've had some challenges with your car, but it's great to hear that you've been able to keep up with regular maintenance. Plus, the interior is super comfortable and the climate control works great! And let's not forget how fun it is to drive. With good MPG, it's a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and enjoyable car.

I absolutely love my 1996 VW Jetta! It has been incredibly reliable, with only normal maintenance and repairs needed such as exhaust, tires, and battery replacements. In the first few years, it covered a lot of miles, around 40,000 in the first year alone, and had reached 100,000 by the third year. The front brake pads were replaced for the first time at 93,000 miles, and then the pads, rotors, shoes, and drums needed replacement at 131,000 miles, although they were still legal. Now, my Jetta requires some more repairs, but nothing unexpected. VWs prefer higher RPMs than Japanese cars, so I've always driven it in the torquey sweet spot. I can't imagine how others have mistreated this fine car to have had such problems with it. I still have it and just bought my 10th VW. I plan to continue driving it for 6,000 miles a year.
-
I really like this vehicle, even with its problems.

I recently bought my 96 GLS with 55k miles and now it has 60k. There are a few minor issues with the Jetta, such as window regulators, CEL, and some electrical problems. However, overall the VW runs great!
Rhiannon Swaniawski 2024-10-16
Although I have experienced some issues with this car, I have taken the necessary steps to address them and ensure its proper functioning. I have replaced the window regulators and fixed the exterior molding. Additionally, I have replaced the O2 sensor and the water pump. While I have had some challenges, I am confident in the quality of this car and would consider purchasing from VW again in the future.
Jerome Bernier 2024-09-03
Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my VW. My dad had warned me against buying one, but I didn't listen and ended up buying a used one from 2000. While I love the look of the car and it's really fun to drive, I did have to take it in for repairs 7 times. Luckily, I had a great 3 yr./100,000 mile warranty that covered all the repairs. However, about 9 months later, the clutch, brakes, and lights all needed replacing. I've heard that those are typical things that need replacing, so just make sure to take your time choosing and researching before making a decision. Thanks for listening!
Ian Volkman 2024-08-26
I purchased my Jetta when it had 74,000 miles on it. Since then, I have driven an additional 14,000 miles. Unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with the car, including problems with the exhaust system (which required a complete replacement), extensive brake repairs, a trans axle replacement, and issues with the door moldings (which I was able to fix with epoxy). Additionally, a piece in the trunk lock broke and the door locks tend to freeze in the winter. It is worth noting that replacement parts can be quite expensive. However, the car itself drives nicely and the manual transmission is excellent. While I have heard great things about cars made in Germany, I have found that those made in Mexico and Canada do not always live up to the same standards.

Hi there, I'm having some trouble with my Volkswagen and I was hoping you could help me out. I've noticed that my car stalls in the rain and won't start on damp or humid days. I've spent a lot of money on repairs and I'm feeling pretty disappointed. As the original owner, I was hoping for better support from Volkswagen. I'm sure you can understand my frustration. I would really appreciate it if you could provide me with some answers. Thank you!
