2019 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2019 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to transmission issues, excessive oil consumption, and front assist technology.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Another common problem with the 2019 Jetta is excessive oil consumption. Some owners have reported that their vehicles consume more oil than expected, with 4 complaints about excessive oil consumption. This issue can lead to engine noise and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly. In some cases, engine replacement may be necessary, which can be a significant expense.
- Front Assist Problems: The 2019 Jetta's front assist technology, which is designed to detect objects and apply the brakes to avoid collisions, has been reported to malfunction. This issue can cause the vehicle to apply the brakes randomly and without warning, potentially putting occupants in harm's way. A class-action lawsuit has been filed regarding this problem, and VW has been accused of not taking ownership of the issue. Customers who complain are typically given two options: live with the malfunction and document it, or disable the feature entirely. The lawsuit seeks to hold VW accountable for related repairs or costs associated with the system malfunctioning under warranty.
Other issues reported by 2019 Jetta owners include problems with the engine, windows, clutch, and fuel system. However, transmission problems, excessive oil consumption, and front assist technology appear to be the most common and significant issues. Potential buyers should be aware of these problems and consider the potential costs of repairs and maintenance when purchasing a 2019 Jetta.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-31
- VIN: 3VWC57BU6KM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Very similar to Recall #: 28H7 of VW. Was driving in hot temperature and dash displayed warning: "Starter system faulty. Please service vehicle" after a warning sound and message "Car Ignition Off. Please stop vehicle for safety." After this, all my electrical went out (from dash to blinkers to head lights to tail lights). However the car could still accelerate and brake.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
- VIN: 3VWC57BU5KM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This is the third occurrence of the vehicle engine shutting off without warning. Each time the instrument cluster displayed "Ignition switched off. Safety stop the vehicle" and "starter system faulty" warnings. After the first occurrence (see detailed report submitted on 07-12-24, NHTSA ID # 11601511) the vehicle was taken to a VW dealership on 07-12-24 in Albuquerque, NM. A detailed account of the problem was explained to the dealership and how all the symptoms matched the documentation on active Volkswagen recall #23V604000 (28H7). The dealership immediately said that even though the vehicle was the same year it was not part of the recall, and it would not restart if this was indeed the problem. We completely disagreed on this account as the problem as stated in the Volkswagen recall was related to a polyfuse which by design opens when heated and closes when it cools down. The dealership diagnosed the issue as electrical and replaced the battery ($400) and declared the problem fixed. On 07-30-24 and 07-31-24 vehicle experience same issue as occurred on 07-11-24. Each time the vehicle was parked in +100 F ambient conditions. Vehicle initially starts and when leaving parking lot, the engine suddenly shuts down. Instrument cluster displays same warnings "ignition switch off" and "starter system faulty". Attempts restart the vehicle are unsuccessful, but it appears after the interior of the vehicle has cooled sufficiently it finally restarts and continues to run. Please look into this issue. I see two recently reported issues occurring on 2019 Jetta's that the VIN is not included in the recall. It is not a coincidence when all the symptoms EXACTLY match those in the active Volkswagen recall. Volkswagen should not wait for a body count before action is taken, it is a known problem that is occurring outside of the initially identified recall. Once again this has the potential to result in a dangerous crash if the vehicle should shut itself off without warning.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
- VIN: 3VWE57BU7KM
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The power steering on my vehicle malfunctioned, never giving me a warning as stated in the owner manual with a yellow steering light. As I was coming down a hill, the red steering light came on accompanied with a loud beep, and I lost power steering, nearly causing an accident. I had a mechanic look at it and the DTC codes he received were B200FF0 and B200F2 The dealership and independent service center I was recommended are unable to service the car for another 3 weeks. The only inspection done on my vehicle has been by a private mechanic There were no warning lights prior to the failure. The owner manual states a yellow steering wheel will illuminate to warn of an issue, then turn red if it's not addressed. This never happened. It went directly to red, and I lost steering during transit.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-16
- VIN: 3VWC57BUXKM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-11
- VIN: 3VWC57BU5KM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: On 07-11-24 vehicle was started after sitting in parking lot. When driving vehicle in parking lot the vehicle engine suddenly shut off. Instrument cluster initially had "ignition switch off" then a second warning light showing "starter system faulty". The vehicle was restarted several times and the engine continued to shut off and display "starter system faulty". A short time later the vehicle was restarted and continued to run. At the time outside temperatures were in the high 90's with the indoor car temperature significantly higher as it was parked. A quick internet search revealed active Volkswagen recall #23V604000 (28H7) issued 08-29-23. Volkswagen was contacted on 07-12-24 and at the current time are not recognizing this vehicle as part of the recalled group. I was given case #06334060 for this call. The vehicle is experiencing the EXACT symptoms as stated in the recall notice. The vehicle is in the same year/model as the vehicles in the active recall. I believe that the current recall has not correctly identified all affected vehicles. This has a high potential of resulting in a dangerous situation as the vehicle shuts itself down with no warning.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
- VIN: 3VWCB7BU2KM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the message "Please Check Starter System" was displayed. Additionally, the engine overheated, and the instrument cluster gauges were inoperable. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring. The contact became aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V604000 (Electrical System), which the contact related to the failure. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,776.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
- VIN: 3VWN57BU6KM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: VW Jetta should be included in the ignition switch recall. Problem started last year August on a trip out of state. After a day sitting in the hot parking lot on drive back car reported ignition switch failure and all electronics shut off and eventually the car shut off and wouldn't restart until the interior of the car cooled off. Once inside of car cooled down car was drivable again. Contacted dealer they stated they had not serviced another Jetta with this problem yet. They adivised to continue driving and see if problem occurs again. All winter (living in cold climate) it was no problem. In March as things warmed up problem occurred multiple times. Multiple occasions the car shut off in the middle of the road luckily no accidents occurred. Had car serviced at VW dealer, they were able to replicate problem and talked with VW field rep. who said to change the ignition switch. Since replacing the ignition switch my car has not had any issues anymore. I contacted VW Care and asked to add my car to the recall or reimburse my repair cost ($ 320) They refuse and insist that my car does not have the same problem as the recalled 2019/2020 models. I was fortunate that nobody hit me from behind when my car decided to shut off in the middle of a 55 mile an hour road. since the warning lights won't work when this problem occurs. This is a very serious problem and the remedy was to replace the ignition switch. I have the email conversation between the VW CARE rep as well as a copy of my repair bill. The last email I received from VW care states that my car is not part of the recall, that they can not add it to the recall and even though it presents with the exact same problem nothing can be done about it. Please let me know if you need any additional information Sincerely [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I test drove cars from 5 other makers, but the Volkswagen SEL Premium was by far the best overall package. It simply has no competition. As someone who has owned 4 Audis, including 2 A4s and 2 TTs, I can say that VW has done a great job integrating the very essence of Audis into this car. For the price, nothing else comes close. It's so easy to drive and enjoy, especially with the Habanero Orange Pearl and Light Gray/Beige Leather. People always ask me about it at gas stations, amazed that it's a VW. There's always room for improvement on any vehicle, but at this price, the Volkswagen SEL Premium is damn good! And with the new 6 year/72,000 Warranty, it's a no-brainer. Kudos to VW!

I've only driven 700 miles so far, but that includes a 400-mile road trip. I'm really impressed with the Jetta SEL's many nice features, especially the LED headlights with auto highbeam, radar-based cruise control with adjustable sensitivity, combined with lane-keeping assist, active safety features, and amazing fuel economy. The 6-year/72k warranty gives me peace of mind, which is pretty nice. It took me several months to decide on the Jetta SEL, but I'm glad I did. Congrats to VW on a great sedan loaded with features and tech at a great price!

Great car and extremely high tech with everything you could wish for. If you're thinking of buying a car, Galpin Volkswagen and Nef Gonzalez are truly the best. They are completely knowledgeable and professional, and Galpin is the only sensible choice. The triptronic mode is a real plus for acceleration and slowing down with 8 speeds. It's a great car at a great price!

I got the SEL and it feels like it has everything you need. The only thing I miss is the power seats. Besides that, I'm super happy with this car. It feels super powerful for a 1.4 liter, as long as you're not driving with 4 passengers and a full trunk. It really gets 35+ mpg, so it's a great gas saver. The technology is awesome! Overall, it's the best bang for your buck at 25K!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2019 VW Jetta R-Line! It's great to know that it has more rear passenger room than your 2018 Jaguar XE. The black grille and 17

As a long-time German car owner and the owner of a 2nd Jetta, I must say that while the car looks great and has incredible mileage, I am disappointed with the front suspension. It bottoms out on potholes, which is frustrating. Additionally, the lack of a locking glove box and trunk security is a letdown. In my previous Jetta, there was a keyed lock for the trunk switch, which was a much better feature. Overall, I believe that these features were not given the attention they deserved. 👎🏼

Hello, I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your Volkswagen. It seems that there is some confusion regarding the EDL feature, as different sources are providing conflicting information. I understand how frustrating this can be for a customer. Additionally, it appears that some features that were present in previous models have been removed in the S model, which is disappointing. I hope that Volkswagen can address these concerns and provide a satisfactory solution for you. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. If German-built VW's are not available, perhaps building some in China would be a good alternative instead of relying heavily on Mexican plants. In my experience, the quality of work in Mexican plants has been poor, resulting in manufacturing problems such as mechanical reliability issues and poor interior workmanship. However, as the car ages, it performs nicely for a cheaper car. I have taken it on summer vacation three times since 2018 and it rarely gets less than 50 mpg on a summer trip. Overall, it is a nice car for the money, but Volkswagen needs to address these manufacturing issues.

I was initially drawn to this car for its impressive technology. During the first month, I was thrilled with the great gas mileage and overall performance. However, I began experiencing issues with the safety sensors, which would randomly turn on and off. Additionally, the radio would occasionally stop working and display an error message, but would later reconnect. On a few occasions, the radio screen even went black, leaving me without any audio. Despite attempting to restart the car, the black screen persisted. Four months into my lease, the check engine light came on and off intermittently. The auto start stop feature also failed three times, and the car would shut off at red lights or stop signs, but fail to restart. The door locks also malfunctioned, and eventually, only the driver's door lock failed. To unlock the car, I had to open the passenger door and reach in to open the driver's door. Multiple sensors failed, and my car was in the garage for over a month at a time. During this time, the car even turned on the e-brake while driving, which caused damage to the brakes. Despite showing the dealership a video of the car doing this, they initially did not believe me. Due to the e-brake issue, the car is unsafe to drive and poses a risk to other drivers on the road. Volkswagen has refused to take ownership of the issue, and I plan to trade out of this car as soon as possible.

I have experienced 5 issues in less than 5 months with my Volkswagen VW 2019 Jetta. Despite the dealer claiming that one of the issues, the grinding of brakes, is normal, I have my doubts. I have uploaded a review on YouTube under the title 'Volkswagen VW 2019 Jetta review with all 5 issues' where you can judge for yourself. The brakes are a particular concern for me, and you can hear the 'normal' sound just 3 minutes into the video. I have been driving for 30 years and have never heard anything like it. While the warranty is appreciated, it becomes pointless when the car is brought in for the third time and the dealer claims there is nothing wrong. Other customers have also complained about the same issue, but the dealer insists that this is how Volkswagens sound. In addition to this, there are other issues such as a back panel popping off and a recall for water leaks. Overall, I am extremely disappointed with the quality of the car.

I have had a negative experience with my Volkswagen Jetta 2019. The back panel popped off and the brakes started making noises within two months of purchase. Additionally, there was a recall to fix some sealant where water can leak in. Despite my initial concerns about buying a German car, I decided to purchase it due to the warranty. However, my experience has not been positive and I have had to visit the dealer multiple times within the first two months of ownership.
