2004 Volkswagen Jetta problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2004 Volkswagen Jetta problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta, several common problems have been identified:

  • Window Issues:
    • The clamps holding the windows in place in many VW Jettas are made of cheap plastic. Moisture entering the door and freezing can cause these clamps to expand, pushing the windows off and resulting in them falling into the door. This issue can be both inconvenient and pose a safety risk for the driver and passengers.
  • Transmission Problems:
    • Owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission in the 2003 Jetta, noting rough shifting as a common complaint. Transmission problems can significantly affect the driving experience and may require costly repairs to rectify the issue.
  • Glovebox Door Falling Off:
    • Some owners have experienced the glovebox door falling off in the 2000 Jetta. While this may seem like a minor issue, it can be an annoyance and impact the overall usability and aesthetics of the interior of the vehicle.
  • Oil Consumption:
    • Another common problem reported by owners is excessive oil consumption in the 2002 Jetta. This issue can lead to the need for more frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly. Monitoring oil levels regularly is crucial to prevent any long-term damage to the engine.
  • Window Regulator Failure:
    • The window regulators in the 2004 Jetta are prone to failure, causing the side windows to fall down inside the door. This can be a safety hazard, especially if the window gets stuck in a partially open position, exposing the interior of the vehicle to external elements and potential theft risks.

These common problems highlight some of the issues that owners of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta may encounter. Addressing these concerns promptly through proper maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-12-21
  • VIN: WVWSE61J64W
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: THE FRONT WINDOWS DETACH AND DROP DOWN INSIDE THE DOOR DURING COLD WEATHER, EVEN WHEN THE WINDOW HAS NOT BEEN OPERATED. THIS HAS CAUSED A LOSS OF VISIBILITY AS WELL AS A LOSS OF PROTECTION DURING A BLIZZARD, AND AGAIN DURING A TORRENTIAL RAIN STORM WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE REATTACHED THE WINDOWS MULTIPLE TIMES AND HAVE CONTINUED TO HAVE THIS FAILURE OF THE CLAMPS THAT HOLDS THEM IN PLACE. THIS HAS HAPPENED BOTH AT LOW SPEEDS AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE ISSUE CONTINUES TO BE A HAZARDOUS PROBLEM. IN LOOKING ONLINE FOR HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM, I HAVE READ THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON IN THESE CARS AND HAS BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION FOR MANY DRIVERS.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-18
  • VIN: WVWSL61J34W
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: STARTING AT AROUND 130,000 MILES, WHEN GAS TANK IS AT A QUARTER OR SLIGHTLY LESS, THE CAR LOOSES POWER AND ACTS AS IF IT IS NOT GETTING FUEL TO THE ENGINE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT TYPICAL HIGHWAY SPEEDS, POWER IS LOST FOR 10-15 SECONDS, RPM DROPS TO AROUND 2000 OR LESS (WHILE IN "DRIVE"). THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE ENGINE JERKS TO LIFE, AND I CAN DRIVE THE CAR NORMALLY, UP UNTIL I HAVE TO REFILL THE TANK. THE STALLING DOESN'T REPEAT ITSELF UNTIL THE NEXT QUARTER TANK. WHEN THE QUARTER OF A TANK ISSUE HAPPENS IN THE CITY AT SLOWER SPEEDS, THE CAR DIES, DASHBOARD ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON, AND I HAVE TO PULL OVER, AND CRANK THE STARTER 3 OR 4 TIMES, AND EVENTUALLY, IT STARTS BACK UP AGAIN WITH NORMAL DRIVING RESUMED. ONE TIME I WAS DRIVING UP A HILL, LOST POWER, AND HAD TO PULL OVER QUICK. WHEN THE QUARTER OF A TANK ISSUE HAPPENS WHILE PARKED, ENGINE AT AN IDLE, THE CAR DIES, AND I HAVE TO CRANK THE STARTER A FEW TIMES TO RESTART THE CAR. THIS PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS ONCE PER TANK CYCLE, ONLY AT THE (APPROXIMATE) QUARTER OF A TANK POSITION, AND DOESN'T HAPPEN BETWEEN THE FULL TO 1/4, OR THE 1/4 TO EMPTY PHASE. I KNOW I AM NOT OUT OF GAS, AS I'M FILLING UP THE TANK TO NORMAL LEVELS. THE FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE, AND THE FUEL FILTER ONCE. MY MECHANIC CHARGED $80 TO DIAGNOSE THE CAR, ONLY TO FIND A CODE ABOUT A SPARK PLUG THAT MISFIRED - WHICH OF COURSE WILL HAPPEN DURING FUEL STARVATION. SPART PLUGS REPLACED, BUT THE PROBLEM HAPPEND AGAIN. I'VE CALLED 3 OR 4 VW REPAIR SHOPS, AND NOBODY HAS A CLUE HOW TO FIX THIS, ESPECIALLY WHEN I BRING UP THE QUARTER OF A TANK ISSUE. THE ONLY WAY TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING IS TO FILL UP BEFORE HITTING 1/4 TANK. IRRITATING !!!! ISSUE GOING FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW.

THE KIT I BELIEVE HAS A TIE ROD END MEANT FOR A PREIOUS GENERATION VOLKSWAGON AS IT IS SMALLER IN DIAMETER AND CANNOT TAPER LOCK. IT TOOK ABOUT A MONTH OF DRIVING FOR IT TO LOOSEN UP. THE PHYSICAL PROBLEM IS THE OUTER TIR ROD BUT THE INNER TIE ROD IS OF A SMALLER DIAMETER AND ADJUSTMENTS WERE MADE INSTALLING SO THE DUST BOOT WOULD PROPERLY SEAL BUT IT WAS MECHANICALLY COMPATABLE.

However, I have taken it to the shop and had all necessary repairs done, including replacing (2) O2 sensors, 1 MAF, TPS sensor, throttle adaptation, thermostat sensor, and water pump. Although there have been some setbacks, I am confident that my car is now in great condition and ready to hit the road.

I am disappointed with the lack of power in my car. Despite my efforts, I have found that Honda Civics, Dodge Neons, and other cars consistently out-accelerate me and are always on my rear. Additionally, I have experienced issues with the center console rubbing against my right leg, and the air conditioning making noise, which has not been resolved even after three visits to the dealer. Furthermore, I have had to add 1 quart of oil per month, and if the battery dies, I am unable to change it myself and must tow it to VW for repair. The computer also loses memory, which requires reprogramming by the dealer at a cost of $40, not to mention the additional charges for towing and labor.

Although I have experienced some issues with my car, I have taken it to the mechanic several times and have been proactive in addressing the problems. I am confident that with proper maintenance and care, the car will perform well. While some people may have had negative experiences with this model, I believe that with the right approach, it can be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle. I am committed to making the most of my investment and ensuring that it meets my needs.

I purchased this car about 15 months ago, unfortunately it was one of the Jettas that was built in Mexico. I have had a few issues with it this year, including replacing the compressor ($620), the Temp compressor ($220), the compressor again which was under warranty, the timing belt and water pump ($650), and most recently the coolant fan ($260). Additionally, the transmission is at the very start of going out. Despite these issues, I still find it fun to drive. However, I would recommend that if you are interested in purchasing a Jetta, make sure it was built in Germany. The ones built in Mexico have had some reliability issues. Also, it is not getting as good of gas mileage as I had hoped. Overall, I am looking to sell it now.

I've noticed that VWs built in Germany tend to have better quality than those built in Mexico. However, I have seen a decline in overall quality and reliability, as well as a decrease in the quality of service provided by VW dealers. While the Jetta TDI is a small and compact car, it is also very safe. However, engine service costs can be quite high. In terms of fuel economy, I would highly recommend a Turbo Diesel over a Hybrid any day. Diesels are proven engines that can last between 300k-500k miles. It's worth noting that the A/C doesn't cool very well and it takes a while for the cabin to heat up in cold weather. The German Car Co. shares technology, which is great, and their cars are safe and reliable. However, it's important to be prepared for high service costs.

I've been the proud owner of this car for a decade now and it has served me well with minimal issues. It's only natural for any car to start showing signs of wear and tear after such a long time. However, the 'major' issues I've had with it are listed below. As long as you take good care of it and maintain it properly, this car runs like a dream. Personally, I can't speak for others, but I absolutely adore my Jetta and I'm even planning on buying another one as a project car once this one finally gives up the ghost. With 110k miles on the clock, it's still going strong!

I purchased this car brand new from the VW dealership back in 2004. Since then, I have driven it for 120,000 miles before passing it on to my college-aged son, who has since put another 130,000 miles on it. We both have a deep affection for this car, and it has never let us down. Even with over 250k miles on the clock, it still runs just as smoothly as it did when I first drove it off the lot. We have always used Pennzoil full synthetic oil and have changed it at about 7-9k intervals. At around 200k, we changed the timing belt, and it has been running like a dream ever since. I keep reminding my son to save up for a new car, but he just can't bear to part with this one. It's just too good!

I'm thrilled to hear about your experience with cars over the years, and it sounds like you've had quite the journey! Your current car, the 04 TDI, seems to be a real gem despite the occasional expense that comes with owning any car. The seats, especially in the 'Sport' edition, are both firm and comfortable, and the acceleration and overall performance are hard to beat. Not to mention, the excellent fuel economy is a huge plus! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the headroom as well, even with the sun/moonroof. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

You live in the beautiful hilly countryside of the Oregon coast and your TDI Jetta sounds like an absolute pleasure to own and drive. It's so reliable and gets an impressive 45-48 mpg on your daily 90 mile commute. Plus, it has plenty of pick up and low-end torque, making it perfect for handling hills and wet or light snow. It's amazing that you've never had a problem with it in two years and 50,000 miles of ownership!

I recently got my Volkswagen Jetta TDI Wolfsberg edition and I absolutely love it! The handling, power, diesel, and seats are all fantastic. I've been a fan of this car since it first came out and I'm thrilled to finally own one. Of course, there are some downsides, such as the steering getting harder when I slow down, but it's so easy when I go faster. Plus, the diesel engine gets me about 45-50 miles per gallon, which is great. Overall, I couldn't ask for a better car and I'm excited to see it reach 200k miles :)
