2006 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-03
- VIN: 3VWRG71K06M
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: So it appears to be fine until about 30/45 mins drive time Then it starts shifting/slamming real hard and hesitates to shift in the next gear To the point where stopping and going isn’t an option or it slips After about 45 mins all the prnds lights turned on and did the same in manual mode.. I read someone it’s a valve body that leads to a faulty Tranny I’ve read almost 150 of the same exact accounts on here and Reddit With the same 2006 Vw Jetta 2.5 It’s too common of an issue Most of them were under 100k miles and never dealt with by the manufacturer Myself my car has roughly 168k miles and I’ve been working to fix it up I just got it a month or so ago And now I have to deal with this Honestly is sad that VW hasn’t been held accountable for an issue that is WAY TOO COMMON to not be their fault. I understand the car is almost 20 years old but a bunch of these accounts i were reading dated as far back as 2009 with 86k miles it’s a shame..

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-18
- VIN: 3VWSG71K26M
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW STOPPED WORKING. THE PROBLEM WAS TRACED BACK TO A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS IN THE DOOR HINGE. THIS IS A VERY COMMON VW ISSUE, AND MANY OTHER ONLINE COMPLAINTS REFERENCE A WIRE HARNESS THAT IS TOO SHORT. I REPAIRED THE SEVERED WIRES WITH BUTT CONNECTORS. AFTER THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. I INSPECTED THE WHOLE AIRBAG SYSTEM (CONNECTORS, WIRING, FUSES, ETC.) TO NO AVAIL. THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS STILL ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. AGAIN, OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS SAME ISSUE WHEN FIXING A VW'S WINDOW (I.E., FIX THE WINDOW AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATES). THE TWO ISSUES SHOULD NOT BE CONNECTED, AND THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-27
- VIN: 3VWSF71K36M
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I HAVE A 2006 JETTA THAT I JUST GOT FROM A FRIEND, THEY STATED THAT IT NEEDED SOME SENSORS LIKE THE MAF REPLACED. I SPENT THE 39.99 AND BOUGHT THE CARFAX REPORT AS WELL TO ENSURE IT WAS A GOOD CAR. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT UNTIL I DROVE IT FOR THE FIRST TIME LONGER THAN 20 OR 30 MINUTES. I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING WHEN IT GOT HOT AND THE GEARS NOT SHIFTING. AS I BEGAN TO LOOK UP THESE SYMPTOMS TO VERIFY WHAT THE ISSUE WAS I RAN INTO SOME VERY CONCERNING STATEMENTS. MULTIPLE SOURCES SAY THE CARS ARE KNOWN FOR HAVING BAD TRANSMISSIONS/ VALVE BODY ISSUES. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DRIVING 2006 VW JETTA 2.5 LITER AUTOMATIC CARS WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE HARD SHIFTING AND SLIPPING AND SOME WERE WORSE THAN THAT. MY CAR ONLY HAS 103,000 MILES ON IT AND MANY OF THESE OTHER VEHICLES WERE BETWEEN 75K AND 140K. HAVING TO HAVE ENTIRE TRANSMISSIONS REPLACED. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES WHEN I'M ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT NEEDING TO SWITCH GEARS BUT STOP AND GO TRAFFIC IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE IN. IT DISCOURAGES ME THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE AND A RECALL HAS NEVER BEEN ISSUED FOR IT. THERE IS NO WARRANTY ANYMORE . MULTIPLE MECHANICS HAVE LOOKED AT THE CAR AND IMMEDIATELY STATED THAT THE 09G VALVE COVER THAT VW USED WAS NOTORIOUS FOR THESE ISSUES AND THEY ARE STILL PRETTY COMMON. 2006 Volkswagen Jetta recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta.
- Manufacturer: Tenneco Automotive
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
- Summary: Tenneco Automotive (Tenneco) is recalling certain Beck/Arnley Master Cylinders, part number 072-9831, sold as aftermarket or replacement parts for 2004-2018 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2012-2019 Volkswagen Beetle vehicles. The fluid seal crimp on the master cylinder may be insufficient, causing brake fluid to leak or the cylinder to come apart.
- Consequence: If there is a brake fluid leak, it can reduce braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Beck/Arnley will notify the distributors that sold the master cylinders and will work with the distributors to notify the end users. Affected master cylinders will be exchanged for a new master cylinder (part number 072-9990), free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2020. Owners may contact Tenneco customer service at 1-800-625-9319.
- Manufacturer: The Gates Corporation
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
- Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

After owning five Nissan products, I was determined to find a vehicle that would be entertaining to drive and make me feel special every time I drove it. That vehicle is the Jetta. Coming from a Sentra, this was a huge step up for me. I can honestly say that I now understand what most VW owners already know, there is just something about the driving experience in this car that I can't quite describe. I highly recommend the 5-speed transmission for anyone looking at the 2.5 model, as you will definitely get more out of this engine.
-
I traded in a Dodge Dakota for my Jetta and I haven't regretted it once. I was a little worried about not being able to sit up high anymore, but that fear went away quickly. It feels like I'm driving a race car - it's so much fun! The ride is smooth and the car responds to everything with ease. The controls are all within reach and when you drive at night, there's an awesome contrast between the red and blue interior dash lights. It's great to see the looks you get while driving around in this car. The XM radio is a nice plus too.

I must admit, I'm a 23-year-old who has made some questionable life choices. However, my 2006 VW Jetta 2.5l has been a loyal companion through thick and thin. I have pushed it to its limits, driving it through fields and burying it in mud pits, yet it continues to run smoothly with only semi-regular oil changes. Even when the engine light comes on, a little oil is all it takes to keep it going. Last night, during a huge snowstorm, I was stuck at work until 3am. I was fully prepared to call for a ride, but I decided to give the Jetta a chance. To my surprise, it drove like a tank through the snow, easily handling 3-5 foot high snow drifts and reaching speeds of 40 mph. It didn't hesitate once, and I made it home safely through the snow drifts. Even when faced with a long gravel driveway covered in snow, the Jetta powered through without any issues. I am grateful for this car and its unwavering reliability. Thank you, Volkswagen, for creating such a warrior of a vehicle.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your first VW! It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice with the Jetta. It's impressive to hear that you're getting such great fuel economy, and it's always a relief to have a reliable car that doesn't need repairs. As a fellow Toyota owner, I can understand the loyalty to the brand, but it's great to branch out and try something new. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

We are so happy with our Jetta! We've only had it for a month, but it's already become our favorite car. It's spacious, stylish, and fun to drive. We've been able to drive almost 500 miles on the highway before needing to fill up, and it only cost us $32 to do so. Even in the city, we've driven 350 miles and still have between a quarter and half a tank left. We're really impressed with the Jetta's performance and resale value. We can't believe we didn't buy one sooner!

I owned a 2001 Jetta that ran like a dream, never had any problems even though it was 6 years old when I bought it. However, my 2006 Jetta was a different story. Right around 50k miles, the check engine light started coming on and no amount of money would fix it. I took it to 3 different mechanics but as soon as I fixed one thing, another problem would arise. If you're considering buying a VW, it's important to do your research. While they can be great cars, it's important to find a reliable one to avoid any potential nightmares.

Since 1959, I've owned many VWs including Beetles, Vans, Dasher Diesel, and 3 Rabbit Diesels, all of which have served me well. When I bought my first new VW, the 2006 Jetta TDI, I was excited and assumed it would be the best. However, I found the metal skin to be paper-thin, denting from the slightest touch of anything hard. The flywheel broke at 30,000 miles for no apparent reason, and although VW acknowledged the problem and replaced it under warranty, they insisted that I needed a new clutch. I argued with the VW representatives that if the flywheel was bad, it must have caused the clutch to fail. Unfortunately, none of the warranty representatives had any mechanical knowledge. The clutch ended up costing me $600. Two years after the warranty ended, the clutch failed again. The engine light has been intermittent since the second year, and there has been excess smoke since new. Sadly, this will be my last VW.

This car has had some engineering issues that may result in expensive repairs to keep it running. In April 2011, CR put it on the used car to avoid list. The four areas with 3 to 5 times the incidence of repair for an average vehicle were: Cooling system - Engine cooling fan cassette & related wiring goes out at around 60K to 80K miles $800 to $1,200; A/C system, compressor seizes; Body Hardware failures - window regulators, door latches, trunk latches; and I think, major Fuel System issues. On my car, it wouldn't hold an on center track - can't be fixed, design flaw, making extended highway travel fatiguing; stalls without warning at idle - problem can't be identified.

I purchased this car brand new and have taken great care of it, ensuring that all maintenance, oil and filter changes have been done regularly since then. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several parts including the radiator, air conditioning compressor, alternator, anti-shudder valve, EGR cooler clutch, and now at 188,000 miles, the cam, tappets, and vacuum pump need to be replaced. I have spent over $7,000 on repairs so far, not including the cost of the upcoming repairs. Based on my experience, I would advise against purchasing a Volkswagen. Recently, I had a check engine light come on and spent $125 on diagnostic tests, which I paid for, and replaced $1,800 worth of parts and labor. However, the check engine light is still on and the dealership will not provide me with the codes that the diagnostic test indicated was the problem. I am considering taking it to another dealership, but they want to perform another diagnostic test. Additionally, the headliner is falling down, the master door lock control has failed, the passenger master door lock control switch and the rear upper brake light have failed, the noise suppressor on the inside of the hood has fallen down, and the resistor for the heater fan has failed. I have found that the dealership has not been helpful in resolving these issues. I believe that Volkswagen needs to take more responsibility for the actions of their dealerships.

I traded my 2003 TDI sedan for this one, but it turned out to be a mistake. The car would randomly refuse to turn over, and the steering wheel started deteriorating, becoming gummy and peeling. The buttons on the dashboard also started peeling, with the paint bubbling and falling off, even on buttons I had never used. The headliner began separating at all the rear impact bag locations, and now it dangles from the roof. To top it off, the MPG was worse than my 03 or my son's 04 wagon. Unfortunately, the dealer's response was not very helpful, as they simply said it was too bad or suggested buying a cover instead of fixing the issues.
