2014 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2014 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the engine, with several reports of engine rebuilds or replacements, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, and timing chain or belt failures. For instance, an alternator belt broke and damaged the engine, while the timing chain, timing chain tensioner, and camshaft had to be replaced in some cases. Additionally, the turbo failed at around 168,000 miles in other instances. These engine problems can lead to stuttering or rough engine performance, especially when accelerating or going uphill, and can be quite expensive to repair.
Another problem area for the 2014 Jetta is the steering and suspension system. Some owners have reported issues with the power steering pump, which can cause difficulty in steering and may require replacement. This problem can be particularly concerning for drivers, as it can affect the vehicle's handling and safety.
The climate system is another problematic area in the 2014 Jetta. Some owners have reported problems with the heater core, which can cause a lack of hot air or even leaks into the vehicle's cabin. This issue can be especially inconvenient during colder months, as it can affect the vehicle's ability to provide warmth to its occupants.
The transmission is another area where the 2014 Jetta has faced issues. Some owners have reported problems with the transmission, including slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting. These issues can affect the vehicle's performance and drivability, making it difficult to operate the car smoothly.
The electrical accessories in the 2014 Jetta have also been reported to cause problems. Some owners have reported issues with the windows, including malfunctions with the driver's side window that can prevent it from opening or closing properly, especially in hot weather. This issue can be inconvenient and may require costly repairs.
Lastly, the paint on the 2014 Jetta has been reported to have issues. Some owners have reported problems with the paint, including chipping and peeling, which can affect the vehicle's appearance and may require costly repairs.
In summary, the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta has several common problems, including engine issues, steering and suspension problems, climate system issues, transmission problems, electrical accessories problems, and paint issues. These problems can be quite expensive to repair and can affect the vehicle's performance, safety, and appearance.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
- VIN: 3VWD17AJ8EM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: HI, I bought this 2014 VW Jetta with 87,000 miles on it for $12,000 from Conicelli Motors in Conshohocken, PA- Nov 2021. I put $8000 down and had $4000 left to pay on it. I kept up with my oil changes and everything. By Oct 2023, I am being told the engine needs to be replaced. I have let this car sit in the parking lot, and I am still making payments on it. There is no way this car should need a complete motor replacement. From a few mechanics, the cost for a motor to be replaces is about $12000. That is what I paid for the car. Looking at all the 2014 VW Jetta engine recalls, I believe VW is the issue. I don't see a recall with my VIN number, but there should have been one.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-02
- VIN: 3VW637AJ3EM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transmission is regularly malfunctioning leaving the car jerking/stuttering when idling. At its worst, the car stopped working while I was driving (felt like it dropped into neutral). I had to stop in the middle of the road (in traffic) to stop and restart the car. I have taken the car to an official VW dealership/repair shop (Smith VW in Wilmington, DE) and was told the transmission would have to be replaced ($10k+ repair). I got a second opinion at AutoStream in Annapolis, MD and was told the same thing. It has not been inspected by police or insurance. The check engine light is now on, though not 100% of the time despite the issue being consistent.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
- VIN: 3VW4S7AJ3EM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Timing chain went bad. Car only has 70k miles on it. Auto shop said there should be a recall because so many of this model car have this issue. It’s a very expensive repair. My son is still making payments on the car and now has to pay $3400 to replace the timing belt. He was told that if he kept driving it the motor would be damaged. He loves the car but this is very disappointing of VW.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: 3VW637AJ0EM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I am writing this complaint in recognition of the 34J6 recall for the 2013 - 2015 VW Jetta Hybrid. The vehicle has only 62K miles on it and the transmission suddenly failed. The vehicle was parked at an ice cream shop and after entering it to drive away, it would not move and a wrench came up on the dashboard. It was then towed to a VW dealer and they quoted approximately $20,000 for a new transmission. VW dealer also said this vehicle was not covered under the 34J6 recall, though the failure symptoms are exactly as outline in the NHTSA's repair and recall document. We also contacted VW corporate and they told me to request good will through the dealer. They offered to then fix the car for $11,000. That price is also ridiculous. We denied paying those costs and towed the car to a private residence where it is sitting in the garage. The VW dealer charged us $205.36 for diagnostics. Safety was put at risk, as the transmission suddenly failed without warning and could have caused a serious incident. I am writing this on behalf of a family member who owns the vehicle and I am taking care this vehicle's issues. I found multiple complaints of dealers doing this to customers, so I decided to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The recall should be expanded to all vehicles, there are only 7,000+ units, this is nothing for VW Ag. The only warning light that came up was a yellow wrench.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-12
- VIN: 3VW637AJ1EM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My car died at McDonalds and we had to push it out of the way. I was on lunch with coworker. Then it started and on the way back to work the car just stopped. We did not get hit but we sure could have. I had to have my car towed to dealer with my triple A. They told me I needed a new transmission. After many calls and much haggling I decided to purchase a transmission if I could have the old transmission back. I am sure my car should be part of safety recall VW34J6 and NHTSA 19V866. There are so many of us that are NOT on the recall but have the same problem. My car only had 62,000 miles. And I still owed a loan on it.

- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: [XXX] 10 year old VW Jetta that was always in the garage until last year when we moved. Now have a nauseating mildew smell throughout the interior. Finally found water under the front carpet. Then found this VW Tech Tip (above). Apparently a known manufacturing issue: "seam sealer Skip" is how they refer to it. Now it's out of warranty with only 52,000 mi and is an unsafe mildew/mold trap. The dealer says it may be $3,000 to fix. Removed driver side front fender, the entire interior and sent the carpet and padding to be ozoned. See pic. Most seam sealer around hinges and A pillar are all painted the body color. This pic shows where it was "skipped" during the build. The dealer repaired the driver side last week without painting (why it's black). Then they strangely stated that they'd like to remove the passenger side fender as well to look for "more holes". They know what's going on. This is a well-known problem. VW customer service said they won't offer any assistance since it's out of warranty. I did own it while under warranty, but never noticed since it was garaged. Do I have any recourse since it's an admitted manufacturing problem? Thanks for your consideration. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-16
- VIN: 3VW2K7AJ6EM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Visibility was impaired when defroster failed to clear windshield and heater was not working on 12/16/2022. I took vehicle to Hayward Volkswagen on 04/04/2023 and was told heater core needs to be replaced. This is a known problem to Volkswagen; there's a warranty recall on the 2014 Passatt with the same heater core. I have found numerous complaints on line with the same Jetta heater complaint. The 2014 Jetta i own has approximately 88,000 miles, mechanically sound car which i am unable to drive in winter months. Feeling frustrated, I did contact VW "helpline" on 01/05/2024, they were no help, not even to negotiate price.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-01
- VIN: 3VW637AJ1EM
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I was on lunch brake, going through a McDonalds drive thru, the car just shut off. I had to have it pushed out of drive thru. After several tries it did start again but shut off in the middle of traffic. I couldn’t shift it. I had to have it towed. VW dealer said I needed a new transmission at 62,000 miles. Then I read about the recall and knew that’s what was the matter with my car. The trouble is my car is not on the recall list. It’s the same with many of us who bought jetta hybrids. So I am out $15,000. The only transmission that can be used is the one on the recall.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-14
- VIN: 3VWD17AJXEM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine experienced excessive oil consumption for years, especially following emissions control software update. Repeated EPC errors where encountered and brought back to multiple dealers who dismissed the issue recommending the use of higher octane fuels and more regular engine oil replacement. Advice was followed. Oil consumption eventually became extreme to the point that in excess of 4 liters where required to fill without any indication of low oil levels. Despite best efforts to maintain engine with sufficient oil to maintain recommend levels many times a year eventual engine knocking was encountered and costly engine replacement was recommended. Issue is well documented publicly with little to no recourse. Car is available for inspection upon request, engine replacement has not been pursued at this time.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-07
- VIN: 3VW637AJ6EM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: For the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid 2013-2015 units, a safety recall 34J6 was issued to service transmission issues that caused powertrain failure. The problem is caused by hairline fractures in the accumulator that cause insufficient transmission oil pressure (my vehicle is showing codes that this is the case). Recently, my 2014 VW Jetta Hybrid has been experiencing issues as described by the 34J6 recall. My car would lose powertrain capabilities at stoplights or if i was slowing down. It would also occasionally stop and start when it was supposed to be idling. The dealership has confirmed that my accumulator is the issue, however, my VIN number is allegedly not affected by this recall. Can an investigation be put forth to determine if this recall can be extended to be more inclusive of VIN batches that it is affecting?

The fluid seal crimp on the master cylinder may be insufficient, causing brake fluid to leak or the cylinder to come apart.
- Consequence: If there is a brake fluid leak, it can reduce braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Beck/Arnley will notify the distributors that sold the master cylinders and will work with the distributors to notify the end users. Affected master cylinders will be exchanged for a new master cylinder (part number 072-9990), free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2020. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."
- Consequence: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began November 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37M2.

In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
- Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

I really enjoyed owning this vehicle as it never let me down in the 136k miles that I drove it. However, I was in an accident on 03/26/2017 and my vehicle was unfortunately totaled. I was hit while making a left turn, but thankfully the side curtain air bags and passenger seat air bag deployed, ensuring my safety. Although the other driver was going 50mph, my vehicle sustained minimal damage and the interior was untouched. Despite the airbags deploying, my insurance company still totaled the car. Overall, this is a fantastic vehicle with reliable performance, great features, a fast engine for a turbo 4cyl, and excellent safety features!

I leased my 2014 Jetta SE with Connectivity in November 2013. As a long-time Toyota customer, I was always happy with their cars. However, I wanted to reduce my payment and insurance costs while also increasing my gas mileage without sacrificing room. Unfortunately, Toyota gave me a high lease price for the 2014 Corolla, which led me to look elsewhere. After test driving many cars in the compact segment, the Jetta blew me away. I was able to lease this vehicle during the 'sign then drive event' for a lower price than all the others I test drove, including the Cruze and Corolla. The 170 HP TSI and 6 spd. Trans. are fantastic, and the gas mileage is great too. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a car in this segment. - SE & above

What a peppy little car! It handles very well and gets great mileage. I've been using it to run around town and it's been a reliable companion. I've never had any problems with it and just hit 60k miles. Maintenance is a breeze - I recently replaced the brakes, pads, and tires. The only downside is that the gas tank only holds 12.5 gallons. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

This sedan is not only reliable, but also highly efficient with fuel. Its 4 doors make it very practical, and the trunk provides ample space for all your needs.

I have been experiencing issues with the fuel consumption of my VW car (14 mpg on 2 liter engine) since September. Despite taking the car to the dealerships 4 times (3 times to Royal and 1 time to Serramonte), the issue has not been resolved. Unfortunately, both dealerships rejected my requests to fix the issue and even refused to properly test the car. I was surprised to learn that Royal expected me to pay for the test myself, despite the car being under warranty. During the time my car was at Royal, I was provided with a rental car, but unfortunately, I had to pay twice the amount that was reimbursed. Similarly, Serramonte declined to provide me with a spare car or reimburse any taxi expenses. I am disappointed that neither dealership was able to fix the issue, despite my repeated attempts to resolve it.

I purchased a 2014 Dieselgate Jetta TDI from Schmelz VW in Minnesota and have had a regretful experience with it. Despite being under warranty, the car has required multiple replacements due to clogged heater cores. Additionally, the car has been in the shop six times for serious issues, including a clutch throw out with less than 80,000 miles. It is disappointing to have spent so much on a car with such a poor record. However, I am confident in my decision to share my experience and warn others about the potential issues with this model.

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. Despite being brand new with only 12,000 miles, it began leaking and experiencing electronic problems after just 2,000 miles. It is not a reliable vehicle.

The engine failed after only two months. I strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle. Despite paying the full amount of 14,500 in cash, the dealer refused to assist me in any way.

I purchased my 2014 Jetta SE in April 2014. Unfortunately, it had to be brought in to the service department only a couple of months later due to the airbag light. Although it took the dealership two weeks to figure out the problem, I am still concerned about the airbag system's functionality in the event of an accident. Recently, I brought it in again because I had been experiencing issues with the ABS, Traction Control, and Check Engine lights coming on intermittently. The service department initially suggested that I turn the car off and restart it, which did not solve the problem. After calling and expressing my frustration, they finally agreed to take a look at it.
