2003 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-28
- VIN: 3vwvh69m33m
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My jetta stalls without warning when the gas gauge is at a quarter of a tank or less. No engine check light or any other any other device comes on to warn me it is going to stall. My speed does not matter. It happens at freeway speeds or around town. It does not occur if the gas gauge shows more than 1/4 of a tank of fuel. I do not know if it is an electrical problem, a fuel propulsion problem or an engine problem. From reading volkswagon forums, this is a very common problem with volkswagons of different years, including the new Tiguans. I'm sure there have been many fatalities as a result of this defect. I am surprised volkswagon has not been forced to repair this dangerous, life threatening problem before now! Maybe, a class action law suit involving products liability, merchantability, and fitness for a particular use would benefit not only owners, but the general public at large. I believe it is your duty to protect the general public from manufactures who place dangerous, defective products in the stream of commerce. Your action is required, and demanded. The first time ocurred right after I purchased the car in 2019. It has stalled many times since then, before I realized I needed to keep the fuel tank at least 1/2 full at all times. Keeping it 1/2 full at all times greatly deminishes the range of travel before I have to refill. It is inconvenient and expensive since fuel has to be purchased at places other the most economical place I usually purchase my gasoline. Thank you

I'm so glad you bought this car with only one owner and 36k miles! It sounds like it's been well taken care of. From what you've said, it seems like this German-made car is a real gem. Just remember to take good care of it - regular checks, synthetic European blend oil, and proper rated tires are all important. Overall, it sounds like a great purchase!
-
I bought this car new and I have loved every minute of it. The stereo is great and overall, it's a fantastic car. It's so fun to drive on twisty roads and the 6-speed manual makes all the difference.
-
This is my first new generation VW diesel. I've driven them in Europe and decided to buy one in 12/02. I had to have the wagon since it's made in Germany, and the sedan is Mexican. I drive about 100 miles a day commuting and need the mileage. Despite what one of the other reviewers said, this car has been far more reliable than my '88 VW. I sold my '88 VW with 135k on it, and it was good. This car has never been in the shop for anything. Do use the DELVAC 1 oil. Insist that your dealer does if you have to take it to them. The oil costs more, but it's truly worth it. I get 42-52mpg, more in summer, less in winter. The car is not slow (I've been over 110mph).
-
I love the tiptronic transmission in my 2003 Jetta Wolfsburg! It makes driving an automatic almost as much fun as driving a stick. The handling is awesome and it's great on fuel. It's amazing how much power you get out of that little engine. The low end torque from the smaller turbo unit almost makes you forget it's a 4-cyl. However, there are some issues with the workmanship. The paint and windshield scratch too easily and there are swirl marks everywhere. The VW CD player doesn't sound good and lacks clarity. On the bright side, I replaced the head unit and kept the Monsoon speakers, which sound great! There were some minor issues with the passenger seat and rear seat, but overall it's a great car. It's a shame that it's made in Mexico.
-
I bought my Jetta Diesel in January and I absolutely love it! It's such a peppy little car and I've already driven 7,000 miles while getting about 45 mpg. The only issue I had was with the sunroof not closing and the driver's map light not staying on, but the dealer was able to fix it for me. I opted for the stick shift thinking it would give me better acceleration and fuel economy, but I found it a bit awkward to shift with the armrest down and difficult to reach the radio controls while in 3rd or 5th gear. If you're considering this car, I would recommend going with the automatic instead. However, there's plenty of head and leg room for my six-foot frame and the stereo is fantastic with both cassette and CD options, large buttons, and great sound.

Just a friendly reminder to avoid parking under trees. Unfortunately, I had to replace my windshield after a hickory nut hit the exposed edge of the glass when it was only a week old. It seems that the edge is the most fragile part and it would be great if VW could cover it. Additionally, I've been hearing some vibration noises from the dash after only two months. I was really hoping for the same quality as the 88 Jetta I bought new back then, but it seems to be lacking. Although the car looks good, the quality doesn't quite match up. Lastly, it would be great to have more leg room in both the front and back. Thank you for your attention to these matters!

Although my experience with my Jetta has been disappointing, I believe that Volkswagen produces high-quality vehicles. However, I did encounter some issues with my car, such as the transmission breaking just before the one year mark, jerking when shifting gears, and experiencing sudden speed changes on the freeway. Additionally, there were some annoying lights on the dashboard that wouldn't go away, a loud clicking noise in the turn signal area, and a strong smell of crayons in the summer. The car also burned motor oil quickly. Despite these issues, I appreciate that the Jetta is great on gas. If you are considering purchasing a Jetta, I recommend buying a new one to avoid any potential issues.

I was hoping to save some money by getting 45 city and 55 HWY, but unfortunately my two Jettas, a 2001 and a 2003, keep breaking down. The cost of replacing a radiator fan is over $550, which includes 2.4-2.6 hours of labor and a fan that costs over $200. The car requires regular maintenance due to the exhaust being fed back into itself. Recently, I experienced a loss of power and could only go 60mph, which required a replacement of the air control sensor. The part cost $180+ and was just a 4 inch pipe with a sensor in it. The parts are quite expensive. Additionally, if you park too close to a concrete parking bumper, it can go under the car and pull your bumper facing out. The oil dip stick goes into a plastic pipe that is designed to break after heating/cooling, and the replacement cost is $20. When it breaks, the plastic could go into the engine.

I bought my Jetta Turbo brand new! Unfortunately, after just 2 years, the engine went out. And then, 2 years after that, the transmission went out too! It was definitely a lemon. A lot of other things went bad too, but I just don't have enough space to go into details. Despite looking beautiful, VW cars are nothing but trouble. However, I'm so happy to have gotten rid of it and switched to a Honda! :)

When I first got my Jetta, I absolutely loved it. It handled well, accelerated quickly, and was a smooth ride. However, I did experience some issues with the transmission not shifting smoothly and the electrical system having some problems. Despite taking it in for repairs multiple times, some issues still persist. Although I love my Jetta, it does require some maintenance.
