1999 Volkswagen Jetta problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 1999 Volkswagen Jetta problems

The 1999 Volkswagen Jetta has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from electrical problems to transmission and engine concerns.

  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues have been reported by several 1999 Jetta owners. These problems include hard shifting, gear slippage, or the transmission failing entirely. The root cause is often premature wear within the transmission system. If your Jetta has these issues, it would require a transmission rebuild or replacement, typically done by a professional mechanic.
  • Engine Issues: Some 1999 Jetta owners have reported engine problems, such as the engine misfiring or losing power. Faulty coil packs are to blame for these issues, which can affect the car's performance and drivability.
  • Interior Problems: The 1999 Jetta's interior has also been a source of complaints. Some owners have reported that the interior is small and not well-suited for tall or large passengers. Additionally, the car's cabin can be loud, especially during highway driving.
  • Door Panel Wiring Issues: There have been reports of wiring problems related to the door panel, specifically the driver's side door panel. If the door panel comes loose, there is a risk of damaging the wiring, which can lead to electrical issues, such as the car not starting or the windows not responding.

In summary, the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta has several common problems, including electrical issues, transmission problems, engine issues, interior problems, and door panel wiring issues. If you own a 1999 Jetta or are considering purchasing one, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues and consider the costs of repairs and maintenance when making your decision.

SEATS,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-09
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 3VWSC29M7XM
  • Components: SEATS,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: RECENTLY MY 1999 VW JETTA PASSENGER'S SEAT BACK CAUGHT FIRE, BURNING FROM INSIDER THE SEAT BACK, THE SEAT AND MY HUSBAND'S WINTER COAT (I HAVE PICTURES I CAN SEND) WHILE WE WERE DRIVING IN A SNOW STORM DOWN I-93. THE VW DEALERS I WENT TO SEE, LET ALONE MY CALL TO VW NORTH AMERICA, WERE ASKED TO PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT SEAT, TO CHECK THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS, ETC. THE RESPONSE WAS ALMOST UNIFORM AS TO NOTHING THEY COULD DO, NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE, NOT WITHIN WARRANTY, ETC. NOW MY INSURANCE COMPANY IS ASKING FOR $500 DEDUCTIBLE FOR ME TO PAY FOR THIS REPLACEMENT! MY INSURANCE GUY AND THE HEAD OF SERVICE AT WELLESLEY VW BOTH SAID IN ALL THEIR YEARS, THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING THIS BAD. BUT WHAT REALLY GETS MY GOAT IS THAT THE FIRE WAS A SERIOUS, LIFE-THREATENING HAZARD; THERE ARE MANY CASES THE INTERNET OF JETTAS' SEATS CATCHING FIRE ' BUT NOT ONE RECALL LIKE THEY DID WITH THE PASSAT A FEW YEARS BACK. I HAVE OWNED VWS SINCE 1987 WHEN I GOT MY LICENSE; MY PARENTS SINCE 1953. I CONSIDER MYSELF BRAND-LOYAL BUT AM NOW BAFFLED AS TO THEIR UNIFORM, UNHELPFUL RESPONSES. I NEED SOME GUIDANCE, LET ALONE HELP TO HAVE THEM FIX THIS PROBLEM. SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE BEEN KILLED HAD THE SEAT FULLY CAUGHT FIRE OR MY HUSBAND WAS WEARING SOMETHING OTHER THAN LEATHER THAT TAKES LONGER TO SMOLDER THAN, LET'S SAY, FLEECE. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS THEIR "LIABILITY", AND THEY SHOULD MAKE GOOD ON CORRECTING THE SITUATION. *TR

LEAK COMES BACK , REPLACED ANOTHER HOSE., THEN THE WORSE STARTS, THE HEATER CORE STARTED LEAKING AND THE CAR STARTED TO SMELL LIKE ANTIFREEZE. GOT HEATER CORE REPLACED, BUT THE INSIDE OF THE CAR SMELLS HORRIBLE,.EVERY TIME I DRIVE MY 1999 JETTA, I GET THIS METALLIC TASTE IN MY MOUTH AND THROAT. THE STUFF IS DEFINITELY TOXIC, AND THE AF CONTAINER READS POISONOUS. BECOMES A TORTURE TO DRIVE MY JETTA I HATE THE METALLIC TASTE IN MY MOUTH. THE DESIGN OFF SOME OF THE HEATING SYSTEM INCLUDES PLASTIC COMPONENTS THAT MAY NOT TAKE THE HEAT WELL SPECIALLY AT THE POINT OF CONTACT WITH THE ENGINE. DID SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND SIMILAR CASES WITH INTERNAL ANTIFREEZE LEAKS ON VW JETTAS. THIS FUMES CAN REALLY RUIN YOUR DRIVING EXPERIENCE NOT TO MENTION THE POSSIBLE DETRIMENT ON YOUR HEALTH DUE TO BREATHING IN A CONTAMINATED ATMOSPHERE THANKS FOR LOOKING INTO THIS COMPLAINT. *TR

2014-03-07
  • Manufacturer: The Gates Corporation
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
  • Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.8L VR6 ENGINES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS." THE RECOMMENDED COLD TIRE INFLATION PRESSURE PUBLISHED ON THE LABEL FOR TIRES OF THE SIZE 205/50 R15 86H IS 0.1 BAR (1.45 PSI) TOO LOW. IT SHOULD BE 2.5 BAR (36.3 PSI). THE LABEL RECOMMENDS 2.4 BAR (34.8 PSI = 35 PSI).
  • Consequence: UNDER INFLATED TIRES CAN AFFECT VEHICLE HANDLING, AND DRIVING WITH SUBSTANTIALY UNDER INFLATED TIRES PUTS THE CONSUMER AT A RISK FOR A CRASH.
  • Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH CORRECTED LABELS, OR A DEALER CAN INSTALL THE LABEL IF THE OWNER WISHES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 29, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT VW AT 1-800-893-5298.

  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE HEAD INJURY CRITERION REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." THE UPPER RETAINER CLIP NEAR THE BP1 IMPACT LOCATION IS DESIGNED TO BREAK WHEN IMPACTED BY THE HEAD FORM. IN SOME CASES, THE MATERIAL OF THE TRIM PART MAY BE MORE IMPACT RESISTANT AS A RESULT OF VARIATIONS IN THE MOLDING PROCESS.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD PREVENT THE CLIP FROM BREAKING ON IMPACT AND RESULT IN LESS DEFORMATION IN THE IMPACTED AREA AND A HIGHER DECLERATION OF THE HEAD FORM, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE TRIM COVER FROM EACH OF THE B PILLARS AND INSTALL A NEW COVER.

Negative 1999 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

I recently owned a Jetta that unfortunately got totaled in an accident caused by a drunk driver. Although it handled curves well, I had a lot of issues with the car. The check engine light would frequently come on, and I experienced misfires even after switching the plugs. Additionally, I had to fix a coolant leak and the cup holders and glove compartment door broke. Overall, I found the car to be unreliable and it was in the shop frequently. While I was glad to get rid of it, I hope my experience can be helpful to others.

It's unfortunate to hear about the issues you've experienced with your car. It sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with the window regulators and the door sills, especially in the hot Phoenix weather. The low clearance of the Jetta can also be a challenge. It's great that you found a reliable battery to replace the ones that came with the car. It's disappointing that the performance and fuel economy have decreased over time. It's understandable that you're frustrated with the customer service you received from VW. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I loved my Jetta but can't wait to get rid of it now! I enjoyed almost three good years of driving before the first automatic (front, driver's side) window went out. It was not under warranty and cost $370 to replace. In the last six months, both rear passenger windows have also slipped off track and require new kits. I can handle one window, but three out of four is a serious problem! Buyer beware!

I've had this car for 4 years and it's been really good. I only had one problem with the car, the alarm system broke. It's easy to maintain, but repairs can be costly. It could use better fuel economy. It's a great car for the city, getting into tight spaces, but it's too small for a family with kids.

The car has been great in most respects, but unfortunately, the electrical system has been a major issue. We've had one problem after another, with many of the plugs and connectors burning off. The interior and exterior lights sometimes work and sometimes don't. Additionally, nearly every visit to the dealer for repairs ends in a bill of $700 to $1000. We've decided to look for a different brand of car. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Positive 1999 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

Fun to drive, stylish and beats all other cars in its class easily.

I own an automatic Jetta GLS and it took some time to get used to the transmission features. However, once the transmission became familiar with my driving style, the car handles and drives like a race car. Although I wasn't very impressed with the quality of the inside cover of the sunroof, which is made of cardboard with carpet and is very flimsy. Additionally, the car can be quite noisy if you only have the sunroof open. If you have any back problems, I would highly recommend this car! It provides excellent support for the back and you can adjust virtually anything with the seat.

The only complaint I have about this beautiful European car is that the 2.0 liter 8v feels a bit sluggish. However, it still has a lot of power and can take corners faster than is legal in most jurisdictions. The interior design is typically flawless VAG quality, with everything laid out logically and well placed. The sound system delivers crisp highs and mids, and decent lows. The 5-speed shifts smoothly, and the clutch provides no fight. The best thing is that this car has 145,000 miles on it and is still running perfectly, with a smooth idle. VW reliability proves itself once again. Overall, this is an excellent car that I highly recommend.

I've had this car for about 2 and a half months now. It's a black used 5-speed Jetta with 64,838 miles on it. I know that's high mileage, but I haven't had any engine problems yet. The fuel economy is perfect. The only problem I need to get fixed is minor. My right passenger window motor burned out, so I have to get a new one. Sometimes, when I lock my door with the lock button on my key, the driver's side door doesn't lock itself, but it engages the alarm, so I have to unlock and lock it again. But that only happens sometimes. It's not a big deal.

This car is so much fun to drive! I highly recommend the 5-speed manual over the automatic. It handles curves like a dream. Although there are some minor maintenance issues, the car is definitely worth every penny.
