2000 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2000 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta 2000 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. This article will discuss these issues in detail, focusing on the root causes, symptoms, and possible solutions.
- Window Regulator Failure: The 2000 Jetta often had window regulator failures, where windows might get stuck open or closed, or move up and down at odd times. The likely culprit is a faulty window regulator. If you face this, a mechanic will need to replace the window regulator, a relatively straightforward task.
- Faulty Coil Packs: For the 2000 Jetta, if your car suddenly starts misfiring or losing power, this could be due to faulty coil packs. Faulty coils are to blame, and replacing them should resolve the issue.
- Timing Chain Snapping: The engine rattles while idling, the check engine light may be illuminated, and the engine misfires can be symptoms of a snapped timing chain. This is a significant issue that can cause extensive engine damage if not addressed promptly. Ordering a replacement and installing it as soon as possible is the solution.
- DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Warning Light: If you have noticed the DPF warning light come on the dashboard of your diesel Jetta, then the DPF is most likely blocked. This part is responsible for cleaner emissions from the exhaust system. Taking the car out onto the open road and driving at between 2000-2500 rpm for at least 15 minutes should burn off the soot and clear the DPF.
- Automatic Gearbox Problems: The automatic gearboxes on these cars can suffer from different problems, with one of the most common being for the gears struggling to change. This could be caused by problems with the gear linkage. It is best to have a professional look at it to diagnose the problem and get it rectified correctly.
- Electrical Problems: The Volkswagen Jetta has known issues with electrical problems, with loose wiring being the usual cause. Most of the time, the loose wiring can be found behind the dashboard. Checking the wiring to ensure that there is no loose wire somewhere down the line should resolve the issue.
- Poor Running/Idling: If you are having trouble with the running of this car, and it's feeling sluggish, you most likely have a problem with the ignition coils. If you have a problem with the idling of the car, it is down to a fault with this part too. Fitting a new ignition coil should resolve the issue.
- Heating Problems: You may have noticed that the heater is not working at all, or is not working on certain settings, which is usually down to a faulty heater resistor. Fitting a new heater resistor should fix this problem.
- Musty Smell From HVAC Vents: A musty and damp smell coming from the HVAC vents is common in the Jetta. It's very common for condensation to build up in the heater case and the SC system, which can cause this smell.
In conclusion, the Volkswagen Jetta 2000 has several common problems that owners have reported. While some issues, like window regulator failures and faulty coil packs, can be resolved with straightforward repairs, others, like transmission issues and timing chain snapping, require more extensive work. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of your Jetta.

SIX MONTHS AGO I NOTICED THE CLUTCH SLIPPING AND IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT INTO A REPAIR SHOP. ON TOP OF THE SLIPPING CLUTCH, THE COOLANT AND EMISSIONS WORKSHOP AND ELECTRICAL BECAME A PROBLEM. TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-11-08
- VIN: 3VWSC29MXYM
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: FOUR NEW CONTINENTAL CONTIPROCONTACT TIRES WERE PURCHASED AND INSTALLED ON MY 2000 VW JETTA. AFTER APPROX. 2 DAYS, ONE TIRE WENT FLAT WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS. TIRE SENT TO SELLER, AND THEY PRONOUNCED IT WAS AN INSTALLATION ISSUE. THIS TIRE WAS SENT TO SELLER, AFTER PURCHASING A NEW ONE. AFTER 4 TO 5 WEEKS OF DRIVING, A SECOND TIRE (DIFFERENT WHEEL) FROM THE SAME ORIGINAL SET OF 4, FAILED SUDDENLY. THIS TIRE "SUDDENLY" FAILED WITH A "GUN SHOT" LIKE NOISE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. REVIEW AT THE SERVICE SHOP SHOWED NOTHING UNUSUAL IN THE INSTALLATION. PICTURES OF THE SECOND TIRE WERE SENT TO THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY COMMENTED THAT THIS WAS AN INSTALL ISSUE. I WORK FOR AN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING COMPANY, AND HAD ONE OF OUR EXPERT TECHNICIANS REVIEW THE SECOND TIRE. HE HAS 30 YEARS OF SERVICE EXPERIENCE WITHIN CHRYSLER DEALERSHIPS. HE WAS CONVINCED THAT THIS WAS A TIRE DEFECT, HAD NEVER SEEN SUCH A FAILURE, AND STATED THAT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE WOULD NOT HAPPEN DURING INSTALLATION. THIS WAS BASED ON THE LOOSE CONDITION OF THE STEEL RING ON THE INNER TIRE, AND THE FACT THAT THEIR WERE NO WITNESS TOOL MARKS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRE. THE ORIGINAL INSTALLER OF THE TIRES ALSO STATED THAT THE RUBBER ON THE INNER BEAD OF THE TIRE WAS "TOO THIN" AND OF POOR CONSTRUCTION. I HAVE THE SECOND TIRE IN MY POSSESSION, AND HAVE REQUESTED THE ORIGINAL FIRST TIRE BACK FROM THE SELLER. I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED THIS, NOR HAVE I RECEIVED ANY FORMAL CONCLUSIVE REPORT WITH MEASUREMENTS AND ANALYSIS TO PROVE THEIR CONCLUSION. RIGHT NOW THEY ARE ONLY STATING THEIR PERSONAL OPINION, WITHOUT THOROUGH ANALYSIS. I AM STILL DRIVING ON THE REMAINING TIRES WITH AN "UNEASY" FEELING THAT I AM AT RISK OF ANOTHER CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. I AM ONLY AFTER THE TRUTH IN THIS MATTER, AND UP TO NOW HAVE FELT AS THOUGH IT HAS NOT BEEN PRESENTED. I DIDN'T CREATE THIS FAILURE, AND I HAVE A HARD TIME SEEING HOW THE INSTALLER, WHO DOES THIS FOR A LIVING, COULD HAVE DONE IT TO 2 TIRES. *TR
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-08-31
- VIN: 3VWSC29M7YM
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT NO LONGER STAYS IN A LOCKED POSITION, AND THE SEAT MOVES FREELY, SLIDING FROM BACK TO FRONT, MAKING CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE'S PEDAL VERY DIFFICULT AND DRIVING HAZARDOUS. AFTER INSPECTING UNDERNEATH THE SEAT, A LARGE COILED PIECE OF METAL WAS FOUND LYING ON THE CARPET. THIS PIECE OF METAL MATCHES EXACTLY ANOTHER PIECE OF METAL THAT FELL OUT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE PASSENGER SEAT OVER SIX YEARS AGO. I CONTACTED THE DEALER, (FRESNO MICHAEL AUDI VW) TO HAVE THEM REPLACE THE PART BACK INTO THE SEAT SO THAT THE SEAT NO LONGER MOVED FREELY AND THE SERVICE MANAGER REFUSED TO CARRY OUT ANY SUCH WORK ON MY VEHICLE. AFTER SPEAKING WITH TWO OTHER EMPLOYEES OF MICHAEL AUTOMOTIVE AND GETTING THE SAME REFUSALS EACH TIME, I ABANDONED THE ATTEMPT TO SOLICIT THEIR HELP IN REPAIRING MY VEHICLE. *TR

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: CAR WILL NOT START AFTER BEING DRIVEN FAR ENOUGH TO WARM-UP THE ENGINE. MUST WAIT SEVERAL MINUTES--UP TO AN HOUR--BEFORE IT WILL START AGAIN. THE PROCESS OF TRYING A RESTART RESULTS IN MUCH UNBURNED FUEL VAPOR IN THE EXHAUST STREAM. THE INTERIOR LIGHTING DOES NOT TURN ON OR OFF WITH THE OPENING OF A DOOR. HORN DOES NOT SOUND WHEN LOCKING THE CAR, AUTO-DRIVERS SEAT POSITIONING DOES NOT WORK. ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR PERFORMS QUITE WELL--GOOD ENGINE POWER, STEERING, ETC. HOWEVER, THE NON-STARTING AFTER BEING DRIVEN A DISTANCE COULD RESULT IN BEING STRANDED AND PLACED IN DANGER. *TT

This sounds like a fantastic car that has been well taken care of! It's great to hear that it has survived some tough conditions and still runs well after all these miles. I hope you find the perfect new 5spd Jetta for your needs!

This was my second car and it only had 66,000 miles on it, which is great for a 10-year-old car. I fell in love with it at first sight - black exterior with black leather interior. I learned how to drive stick with this car and it's a blast to drive. It's very fast, even for the 2.0L V4, and the handling is awesome. I can't say enough about how much I love this car - it looks so cool, is so comfy to sit in, and is fast and handles well. I'm going to miss this car and so will all my friends. The one thing that's not so great about this car (and the same goes for all German cars) is that when something breaks, it can be pricey. My alternator went and it cost $500, and the oil pan cost $475. The other thing I don't like too much about the car is the plastic body. It gets 20-26 mpg. I absolutely love this car!

I bought my Jetta back in 2005 with 200,000 km on it. Since then, I've put on another 110,000 km on this 2.0 gas model. Over the years, I've replaced the radiator, inner and outer tie rod ends, battery, CV joint, brakes all around, ball joints, and all the basic wear and tear parts that you would expect to replace on any car. Despite driving this car hard, it has never let me down. It's an absolute blast to drive! I found that the 2.0 really came to life when I added a cold air intake, which gave it much more power and a great sounding growl when you punch it. With the added 18-inch rims and 2-inch suspension drop, my Jetta can out-handle most cars on the road. Needless to say, I'm a VW customer for life!

You bought this car brand new in 2001 and it's still going strong! While there were a few minor recalls, it has been a reliable commuter car for you, with great gas mileage and stylish design. You recently invested $1,500 in preventative maintenance, including a new timing belt, which you consider a wise decision. Although there is some wear and tear on the interior, such as a broken glove box arm and arm rest latch, you still think it looks great and is fun to drive (even if it can be a bit sluggish in 1st gear). Overall, it has been a great car for you!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought back in August of 2009 from a military family for $3500 when it had 98,000 miles. I have to say, I've been really lucky with it - I haven't had any issues with it at all! The previous owners clearly took great care of it. The only minor problems I've had are with the glove compartment hinge and cupholder, but luckily I have a friend who had a spare cupholder, so that was an easy fix. I usually get between 32-40 mpg's depending on how I drive, and I take really good care of the engine and components to make sure everything runs smoothly. I'm actually thinking about getting the timing belt/water pump changed soon, since it's at 102,000 miles now. Thanks for listening!

I've had a lot of issues with this car that I never expected. It was my dream car, but it turned into a nightmare with all the recalls and problems. From the engine that constantly needs repairs to the broken glove box and the recalled catalytic converter, it's been a tough ride. Unfortunately, they won't fix the converter until $1,000 of parts are replaced to make sure it's the problem. Even if I were a mechanic, I wouldn't want this car again! It's just not worth it.

Although my Volkswagen Jetta TDI has had some issues with the front end and brakes, I have learned a lot from the experience. I have spent a lot of time at the dealership, but I have also gained valuable knowledge about car maintenance and repair. While I may consider a Honda or Toyota in the future, I am confident in my ability to keep my Volkswagen running smoothly. It's all about finding the right mechanic and taking proactive steps to prevent issues.

You have experienced various problems with your car, including a crack in the engine block which has rendered it undriveable until the entire engine is replaced. The cost for this would be $2500 for a used engine or $7100 for a new one, which is not worth it considering the value of the car. Additionally, you have had issues with the fuel nozzle flap retainer falling into the fuel filler neck, which required the fuel tank to be replaced. The check engine light has also been coming on and off, and the dealer has had to replace the fuel tank again due to incorrect installation. The rear brakes and tires have also worn out early. Recently, the Mass Air Flow sensor had to be replaced to fix the check engine light issue. We understand how frustrating this must be for you and we will do our best to address these issues and ensure your car is running smoothly.

I love my Jetta, despite its annoying quirks. Although the CEL pops on for just about anything, especially with the AC in use, the engine is still solid at 185,000 miles and it's a lot of fun to drive. The car has also been very reliable without any major breakdowns other than a water pump, starter, and brakes. Given the age and miles, this is expected. These cars are timelessly stylish, handle well, and get great mileage (31MPG!). With proper care, they can stand the test of time and distance. Overall, it's a good quality car.

Despite having had 6 sensors replaced at the same time, the engine light came back on. After taking the car back to the shop, the mechanic was unable to fix it and suggested I pick it up. Currently, the car requires a warm-up period before it can be driven, as it will start and idle but die when the gas is pressed. Although the car drives well and I have owned it since new, it seems that the issues it faces are difficult to resolve. It is disappointing that the car's engineering is so complicated and unconventional, making it difficult for anyone to work on it. However, I am confident that with the right expertise, these issues can be resolved.
