2020 Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2020 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta has been reported to have issues with its infotainment system, including connectivity issues and system freezing. These problems can affect the driver's ability to use the car's entertainment and navigation features, which can be frustrating and potentially dangerous if the driver is unable to access important information while driving.
Another issue reported for the 2020 Jetta is transmission problems, particularly in the 2019 model year. These problems can include hard shifting, gear slippage, or the transmission failing entirely, and are often caused by premature wear within the transmission system. These issues can be costly to repair, as they typically require a transmission rebuild or replacement, which is usually done by a professional mechanic.
The 2020 Jetta has also been reported to have issues with its windows, including windows that are stuck open or closed, or that move up and down at odd times. The likely culprit for these issues is a faulty window regulator, which will require replacement by a mechanic.
Additionally, some 2020 Jettas have been reported to have faulty coil packs, which can cause the engine to misfire or lose power. This issue affects only a handful of 2020 Jettas, but can be a significant problem if it occurs, as it can affect the car's performance and fuel efficiency.
Overall, while the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta has many positive qualities, including a refined interior, good performance, and a spacious interior, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common issues and to consider the potential costs of repair when making their purchasing decision.

- VIN: 3VWN57BU2LM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Will not take fuel. Even when the gasoline tank is empty it will not accept fuel properly. Fuel seeps out and leaks. Problem presents identically to the 2015-2020 VW & Audi recall. VW doesn’t acknowledge my VIN as a vehicle with the problem. My car is on the identical platform as the Audi A3 and is FWD. my problem is identical to the recall but VW will not acknowledge the problem.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: 3VWN57BU8LM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I recently purchased a vehicle on July 11th, and on July 12th, I noticed a significant issue with the transmission. Specifically, the vehicle began grinding when I attempted to engage reverse gear. Concerned for safety, I promptly contacted the dealership. Initially, they advised that the proper procedure was to shift from first gear to reverse, attributing the issue to a known Volkswagen transmission characteristic. Upon further inspection at the dealership, they acknowledged the problem as a documented issue with Volkswagen transmissions, providing a "tech tip" confirming its severity. This issue poses a serious safety risk due to the delay in shifting from first to reverse, potentially impeding quick maneuvering in emergencies, thereby compromising driver and passenger safety. The problem was replicated multiple times during dealership visits, with no warning lights or indications prior to the grinding in reverse.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
- VIN: 3VWCB7BU3LM
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My brakes have always sounded weird to me. But the dealer and my mechanic assured me that they were fine. On Saturday 7/6/24, I noticed a horrible grinding noise. I took it to my mechanic and was told that due to a faulty brake caliper the passenger side front inner brake pad has gone metal to metal. I can see that there is a recall on the calipers for 2020 VW Jetta but it doesn't show up for my VIN #. I am having to pay $541.07 and feel that if this is a recall I shouldn't have to pay.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: 3VWCB7BU2LM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The fuel door would not open for me to put gas in my car. I cannot drive my car without fuel. If I can’t get to my gas tank because the fuel door has malfunctioned I become a danger to those who drive as well as myself and my vehicle. My car tells me everything else but not that. I only find out once I need gas and others getting upset because they waiting on the gas spot can get me hurt or killed in this day and age with peoples lack of patience. I had to spend extra money to tow my car just for them to break the actuator just so I can put gas in my car. Now my fuel door hangs open and now I have to worry about my car and who may do something in that instance. The car doesn’t offer a switch or button in the car to release the fuel door. My car runs on gas if the malfunction happens every 6 months or every year it stops my life. I need to work go to school and so much more. This is an issue that will continue because of the build of the vehicle and others like it in many make and models. Help please

- VIN: 3VWCB7BU9LM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: After buying this vehicle in June 2020, and the "Emergency SOS Module" never malfunctioning once, I enrolled in VW's free "Safe and Secure" service through the myVW mobile application on March 7, 2024, and immediately received an "Emergency SOS Error" light. The vehicle manual states that the vehicle is not safe to drive and must be taken to the dealership immediately. I then called my local VW dealership asking if I could stop by since I was in the area, and the service department stated that have seen a lot of vehicles coming in with this issue lately and the car must be brought in to replace the emergency call module. Upon bringing my vehicle in, the dealership stated that there is a diagnostic charge of over $250, in addition to the cost of potentially replacing the module (which I'm reading online others have paid between $900-$1,500 for replacement. This is completely unacceptable to pass on a charge to a customer for something that is not included in the vehicle's scheduled (or unscheduled) maintenance list, as well as has nothing to do with the mechanical operation of the vehicle – in addition to posing a safety risk. I never had an issue with this module until the minute I decided to enroll in VW's free "Safe and Secure" service, at which point it seems either they have installed faulty equipment in their vehicles or have an error in their software.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving at various speeds, while making turns, and while coming to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the driver's side door wiring harness had failed and caused the module to experience an electrical shortage. The dealer informed the contact that the electronic parking brake had engaged because the door was securely closed while driving. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 65,789.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-31
- VIN: 3VWN57BU0LM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Incident Occurred in May. Was on Reddit and saw someone say to report any issues to NHTSA so that's what I'm doing At the end of the month in May (2023) when starting my car after work that had been sitting in the sun, it turned on but then turned off about 10 seconds later saying "ignition switch off safely stop the vehicle" then it flashed to another screen saying "please check the starter system." I waited about 10 minutes then I was able to start my car with no issue. Then after leaving work I pulled onto the highway and the issue happened again while going 60+ mph. Everything cut off and it gave me the same message. My jetta is a manual so it was still in gear and could keep driving but it was super sketchy. I immediately pulled off the road and when I came to a stop the car completely shut off. Then I waited another 10 minutes. Started my car again and the exact same thing happened and I had to pull off the highway. After that I was able to start the car without it happening again and I drove straight to the Volkswagen dealer to have them fix it. I left the the next day to go to a work conference out of state and returned the following Sunday to my car which was now fixed. Part P2532 was replaced in the ignition switch. Luckily I have a 4 year 40,000 mile warranty so I didn't have to pay anything.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-18
- VIN: 3VWCB7BU5LM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The sunroof shattered after closing the car door from the pressure or motion of the car door closing. The sunroof glass panel popped up in the center and all the shattered glass was in an upward motion indicating the cause was from the pressure in the cabin. There were no visible chips or debris on the sunroof prior to this occurring. I took the vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership for an inspection and repair but they denied warranty coverage even though the vehicle is under the original warranty. Volkswagen claims that a chip or rock would cause the sunroof to shatter from the door closing. This is not a safe or acceptable design - sunroofs should not shatter when car doors are opened/closed or from the movement of the vehicle driving.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06

When making a phone call, if the volume is adjusted during the call, the other person will hear a very bad echo of their own voice. The echo only occurs when the call volume is adjusted, and I can't hear it in my own car. I have been to the dealer twice to diagnose this issue, and talked to VW Customer Care, neither has been able to fix the problem or determine why it's happening. The first visit I didn't know that changing the volume caused the issue, during one of the trips they replaced the microphone and tried multiple phones (iPhone and Android), neither fixed the problem. I purchased this car used with around 10k miles on it from VW and have had the issue ever since. This is NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, it’s just very annoying.

Negative 2020 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews
Positive 2020 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews
-
One Month Review... We decided to purchase the newest Jetta fresh off the lot after months of test driving other brands. We ultimately chose the new Jetta for several reasons. Firstly, we were impressed with the numerous upgrades that came with the car for the price. Secondly, the new infotainment system, which offered Android Auto and Samsung Mirrorlink, was a major selling point for us, especially since other manufacturers only offered iPhone CarPlay. Thirdly, we were drawn to the new 72000/6 yr warranty offered by VW. Fourthly, we love the conservative designs of VW/AUDI both inside and out. Lastly, the Jetta was the only 4 cyl car with a turbo, which we believe should be a requirement for all 4 cyl engines. However, we did have some complaints. We initially wanted the manual transmission, but unfortunately, it only came in the S model, which didn't offer leatherette, heated seats, heated steering wheel, or dual climate. We then considered the SEL, but it didn't offer power seats for some reason. The only difference we found was that the SEL had the full display on the gauge cluster and an 8-inch infotainment system instead of a 6.5-inch one, and it also offered ambient lighting. We also checked out the R line, but it didn't fit our lifestyle. The only model that had everything we wanted was the SE with the cold weather package. Although we would have loved the full display, we are willing to wait three years to see what else VW brings to the table. We initially had a problem with the remote start, which wouldn't work for some reason, but it's okay now. The basic sound system is not great unless you upgrade to a higher quality, but to be honest, we don't really know what they offer as an upgraded speaker system. Our minivan and 2008 Ram truck have better sound systems than the 2019 Jetta. Listening to music on our new Jetta is like listening to music from a 3.5-inch speaker, which is painful and a bit embarrassing. While listening to music using USB Android Auto, the right front speaker rattles at low volume.I haven't even listened to music at a high volume because the speakers are not very good. In my opinion, it would be great if VW offered a recall on the speakers and upgraded them for free. Fortunately, we leased the vehicle instead of buying it. I will continue to update my review as time goes on. If you like a conservative style and a simple, elegant interior with leatherette rather than cloth, and are looking for a quick 4-cylinder turbo engine with the best MSRP and warranty, then I would say that the VW brand is the way to go. Should you decide to get a VW Jetta, I think you'll be happy with your choice.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my recent car hunting experience with you. I've been looking for a small sedan to buy when my current lease is up, and I had the chance to spend a few days with a 2019 Jetta R-line. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! While I was considering other brands like Mazda, Subaru, Honda, Audi, and Acura, the Jetta really stood out as the best value for the money. The interior layout is fantastic, with a dashboard that puts everything right where you need it. The handling and stability are top-notch, especially for the price point. I would definitely recommend the 17

Our 2017 Nissan Sentra was totaled, but it was a great value car. We decided to come up with a list of potential replacements and I saw a good deal advertised for the Jetta, so I added it to the list. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any Six Speeds close to me, so I didn't get to test drive the '18 model. We test drove the Kia Soul, Corolla Mi, and finally the Jetta. I was blown away by the Jetta and ended up buying one. The car offers great performance and comfort, and the fuel economy is fantastic - I could get better, but it's so much fun to drive that I'm still getting in the mid 30's. Plus, it has car play which is a huge plus and gives us GPS, etc. Overall, this car is a winner and the prices you can get are great! Edmunds asked me to update my review - I can say after 7,000+ miles we still love this car and believe it's a winner. There are no complaints about this car except that I will need to give it to my son at the end of the school year (he earned it by his grades) - it is a lot of fun to drive. We enjoyed it so much that we even added an Atlas to our garage!

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with the Jetta. As someone who doesn't make rash purchases, I did a lot of research before deciding on which car to get. After comparing different models in this class, I found that the Jetta provided an excellent value. The quality of the ride and the included options were impressive. What's more, the Jetta comes with a lot of safety features as standard, which was a big plus for me as I have young drivers who will be on the road in the years ahead. I've only had the car for a few weeks, but I'm already happy with its performance, comfort, and overall value. The designers clearly had the driver in mind when designing the interior, as the intuitive design has really enhanced my experience. Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts!

Some reviewers have described the 2019 Jetta as 'Audi-lite', which is a great way to sum it up. The fit and finish are superior to that of comparable Japanese-Korean-American cars. The fuel mileage is excellent, even in stop-and-go rush hour traffic. The 1.4 L turbo has plenty of torque and power for normal, and even spirited, driving. The manual transmission is smooth and easy to use. The handling is very stable and the ride comfort is excellent. It is quiet in normal driving, but you can still hear a satisfying engine growl when you put your foot into it. The Driver Assistance package is non-intrusive in normal driving, but a tremendous help in congested traffic. The price was acceptable, even though Hawaii dealers do not give the Mainland price incentives and discounts. With those discounts and incentives, the Jetta is a steal. While shopping, I was also looking at the 2018 Honda Civic, which is also a very nice car, but I chose the Jetta because it has better, classier styling that should age better than the 'Gee-whiz Boy Racer' styling of the Civic. My only real gripe about the 2019 US version of the Jetta is that only the base 'S' model comes with a manual transmission. Those lucky Canadians can get manual transmissions across the model spectrum. Really, Volkswagen, at least put a manual in the R-Line. If you are looking for a nice, comfortable, roomy compact sedan, you owe it to yourself to look at the Jetta. Consider it an Audi Fox for the 21st Century.

Although the car has had some issues, I have been proactive in addressing them with my local dealer. Despite some initial difficulty in identifying the source of the noise, the dealer was eventually able to diagnose the issue and informed me that VW Corporate is actively working on a solution. Additionally, I am aware of the current recalls on the car and am taking the necessary steps to ensure its safety. While the situation is frustrating, I am confident that with the support of the dealer and VW Corporate, we will be able to resolve these issues and enjoy the car for years to come.

This car drives very nicely. The engine is peppy and the transmission shifts smoothly most of the time. Although downshifts can be noticeable at times, the suspension is on the soft side and provides a comfortable ride. All the technical features in this car deserve an applause. The heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats are awesome. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment unit are incredible and very easy to use. The Beats audio system is decent, and the ambient lighting is very nice, giving the interior a warm atmosphere. Now, there are things which I personally do not like, but other people might not notice an exception. Unfortunately, the front passenger seat is very uncomfortable. It seats low, does not have height adjustments nor lumbar support, and this is top of the line trim. It feels like I am sitting flat on the floor with no back support, making long drives uncomfortable. In my opinion, this kind of cost-cutting is unacceptable. The passenger seat should be afforded the same amount of adjustments as the driver seat. The materials on the rear door panels look and feel very cheap, and sometimes they squeak when the temperatures are cold. There are no air vents for the rear passengers, but the rear heated seats make up for it a little. The trunk insulation materials are barely present, and the trunk lid and hinges are exposed and look ugly. The trunk lid itself is heavy and requires a push up in order to lock in the open position. The interior lights are not LED and they are on the dim side. The rear camera does not have a projection trajectory. Overall, it is a good car with an awesome fuel economy, and if the manufacturer fixes these shortcomings, especially with the front passenger seat adjustments, it will be even better.

The 2019 Jetta S model has been reported to have transmission issues, specifically a grinding noise when driving at around 30mph. Despite VW's claim that this is normal, it is clear that this is a widespread problem affecting all Jettas with the 8-speed auto transmission. It is recommended that potential buyers research this model before making a purchase. It is worth noting that there is currently an ongoing lawsuit investigation into the VW Jetta 8-Speed Transmission Problems.

I have experienced 5 issues in less than 5 months with my Volkswagen VW 2019 Jetta. Despite the dealer claiming that one of the issues, the grinding of brakes, is normal, I have my doubts. I have uploaded a review on YouTube under the title 'Volkswagen VW 2019 Jetta review with all 5 issues' for you to judge for yourself. The brakes are a particular concern for me, and you can hear the 'normal' sound just 3 minutes into the video. I have been driving for 30 years and have never heard anything like it. While the warranty is appreciated, it becomes pointless when the car is brought in for the third time and the dealer claims there is nothing wrong. Other customers have also complained about the same issue, but the dealer insists that this is how Volkswagens sound. This is unacceptable. Additionally, there are other issues such as a back panel popping off and a recall for water leaks. As a result, I am extremely disappointed with my purchase.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your Volkswagen. It seems that there is some confusion regarding the EDL feature, as the Volkswagen representatives have informed you that the car does not have it, while your window sticker claims otherwise. I understand how frustrating this can be for a customer. Additionally, you have noticed some changes in the features of the S model compared to the previous Jetta models. I can imagine how disappointing this must be for you. It seems that you have also faced some quality-related issues with your car, which is unacceptable. I hope that Volkswagen can provide you with a satisfactory solution to these problems. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. If German-built VW's are not available, perhaps building some in China would be a good alternative instead of relying heavily on Mexican plants. In my experience, the quality of work in Mexican plants has been poor, resulting in manufacturing problems such as mechanical reliability issues and poor interior workmanship. However, as the car ages, it performs nicely for a cheaper car. I have taken it on summer vacation three times since 2018 and it rarely gets less than 50 mpg on a summer trip. Overall, it is a nice car for the money, but Volkswagen needs to address these manufacturing issues.
