2020 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2020 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta has been reported to have issues with its infotainment system, including connectivity issues and system freezing. These problems can affect the driver's ability to use the car's entertainment and navigation features, which can be frustrating and potentially dangerous if the driver is unable to access important information while driving.
Another issue reported for the 2020 Jetta is transmission problems, particularly in the 2019 model year. These problems can include hard shifting, gear slippage, or the transmission failing entirely, and are often caused by premature wear within the transmission system. These issues can be costly to repair, as they typically require a transmission rebuild or replacement, which is usually done by a professional mechanic.
The 2020 Jetta has also been reported to have issues with its windows, including windows that are stuck open or closed, or that move up and down at odd times. The likely culprit for these issues is a faulty window regulator, which will require replacement by a mechanic.
Additionally, some 2020 Jettas have been reported to have faulty coil packs, which can cause the engine to misfire or lose power. This issue affects only a handful of 2020 Jettas, but can be a significant problem if it occurs, as it can affect the car's performance and fuel efficiency.
Overall, while the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta has many positive qualities, including a refined interior, good performance, and a spacious interior, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common issues and to consider the potential costs of repair when making their purchasing decision.

- VIN: 3VWN57BU2LM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Will not take fuel. Even when the gasoline tank is empty it will not accept fuel properly. Fuel seeps out and leaks. Problem presents identically to the 2015-2020 VW & Audi recall. VW doesn’t acknowledge my VIN as a vehicle with the problem. My car is on the identical platform as the Audi A3 and is FWD. my problem is identical to the recall but VW will not acknowledge the problem.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: 3VWN57BU8LM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I recently purchased a vehicle on July 11th, and on July 12th, I noticed a significant issue with the transmission. Specifically, the vehicle began grinding when I attempted to engage reverse gear. Concerned for safety, I promptly contacted the dealership. Initially, they advised that the proper procedure was to shift from first gear to reverse, attributing the issue to a known Volkswagen transmission characteristic. Upon further inspection at the dealership, they acknowledged the problem as a documented issue with Volkswagen transmissions, providing a "tech tip" confirming its severity. This issue poses a serious safety risk due to the delay in shifting from first to reverse, potentially impeding quick maneuvering in emergencies, thereby compromising driver and passenger safety. The problem was replicated multiple times during dealership visits, with no warning lights or indications prior to the grinding in reverse.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
- VIN: 3VWCB7BU3LM
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My brakes have always sounded weird to me. But the dealer and my mechanic assured me that they were fine. On Saturday 7/6/24, I noticed a horrible grinding noise. I took it to my mechanic and was told that due to a faulty brake caliper the passenger side front inner brake pad has gone metal to metal. I can see that there is a recall on the calipers for 2020 VW Jetta but it doesn't show up for my VIN #. I am having to pay $541.07 and feel that if this is a recall I shouldn't have to pay.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: 3VWCB7BU2LM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The fuel door would not open for me to put gas in my car. I cannot drive my car without fuel. If I can’t get to my gas tank because the fuel door has malfunctioned I become a danger to those who drive as well as myself and my vehicle. My car tells me everything else but not that. I only find out once I need gas and others getting upset because they waiting on the gas spot can get me hurt or killed in this day and age with peoples lack of patience. I had to spend extra money to tow my car just for them to break the actuator just so I can put gas in my car. Now my fuel door hangs open and now I have to worry about my car and who may do something in that instance. The car doesn’t offer a switch or button in the car to release the fuel door. My car runs on gas if the malfunction happens every 6 months or every year it stops my life. I need to work go to school and so much more. This is an issue that will continue because of the build of the vehicle and others like it in many make and models. Help please

- VIN: 3VWCB7BU9LM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: After buying this vehicle in June 2020, and the "Emergency SOS Module" never malfunctioning once, I enrolled in VW's free "Safe and Secure" service through the myVW mobile application on March 7, 2024, and immediately received an "Emergency SOS Error" light. The vehicle manual states that the vehicle is not safe to drive and must be taken to the dealership immediately. I then called my local VW dealership asking if I could stop by since I was in the area, and the service department stated that have seen a lot of vehicles coming in with this issue lately and the car must be brought in to replace the emergency call module. Upon bringing my vehicle in, the dealership stated that there is a diagnostic charge of over $250, in addition to the cost of potentially replacing the module (which I'm reading online others have paid between $900-$1,500 for replacement. This is completely unacceptable to pass on a charge to a customer for something that is not included in the vehicle's scheduled (or unscheduled) maintenance list, as well as has nothing to do with the mechanical operation of the vehicle – in addition to posing a safety risk. I never had an issue with this module until the minute I decided to enroll in VW's free "Safe and Secure" service, at which point it seems either they have installed faulty equipment in their vehicles or have an error in their software.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving at various speeds, while making turns, and while coming to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the driver's side door wiring harness had failed and caused the module to experience an electrical shortage. The dealer informed the contact that the electronic parking brake had engaged because the door was securely closed while driving. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 65,789.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-31
- VIN: 3VWN57BU0LM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Incident Occurred in May. Was on Reddit and saw someone say to report any issues to NHTSA so that's what I'm doing At the end of the month in May (2023) when starting my car after work that had been sitting in the sun, it turned on but then turned off about 10 seconds later saying "ignition switch off safely stop the vehicle" then it flashed to another screen saying "please check the starter system." I waited about 10 minutes then I was able to start my car with no issue. Then after leaving work I pulled onto the highway and the issue happened again while going 60+ mph. Everything cut off and it gave me the same message. My jetta is a manual so it was still in gear and could keep driving but it was super sketchy. I immediately pulled off the road and when I came to a stop the car completely shut off. Then I waited another 10 minutes. Started my car again and the exact same thing happened and I had to pull off the highway. After that I was able to start the car without it happening again and I drove straight to the Volkswagen dealer to have them fix it. I left the the next day to go to a work conference out of state and returned the following Sunday to my car which was now fixed. Part P2532 was replaced in the ignition switch. Luckily I have a 4 year 40,000 mile warranty so I didn't have to pay anything.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-18
- VIN: 3VWCB7BU5LM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The sunroof shattered after closing the car door from the pressure or motion of the car door closing. The sunroof glass panel popped up in the center and all the shattered glass was in an upward motion indicating the cause was from the pressure in the cabin. There were no visible chips or debris on the sunroof prior to this occurring. I took the vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership for an inspection and repair but they denied warranty coverage even though the vehicle is under the original warranty. Volkswagen claims that a chip or rock would cause the sunroof to shatter from the door closing. This is not a safe or acceptable design - sunroofs should not shatter when car doors are opened/closed or from the movement of the vehicle driving.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06

When making a phone call, if the volume is adjusted during the call, the other person will hear a very bad echo of their own voice. The echo only occurs when the call volume is adjusted, and I can't hear it in my own car. I have been to the dealer twice to diagnose this issue, and talked to VW Customer Care, neither has been able to fix the problem or determine why it's happening. The first visit I didn't know that changing the volume caused the issue, during one of the trips they replaced the microphone and tried multiple phones (iPhone and Android), neither fixed the problem. I purchased this car used with around 10k miles on it from VW and have had the issue ever since. This is NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, it’s just very annoying.

Negative 2020 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews
Positive 2020 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews
-
I leased my 2019 Jetta SEL trim and I’ve had it for about 4 months now. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems with it, even though I live in NY. The standard LED headlights and tail lights make it feel like a much more expensive car, and the interior is really nice too - not quite luxurious, but definitely premium. I absolutely love everything about my Jetta, and I'm so glad I decided to get a VW vehicle for the first time.
-
I got the SEL and it feels like it has everything you need. The only thing I miss is the power seats. Besides that, I'm super happy with this car. It feels super powerful for a 1.4 liter, as long as you're not driving with 4 passengers and a full trunk. It really gets 35+ mpg, so it's a great gas saver. The technology is awesome! Overall, it's the best bang for your buck at 25K!
-
I can't believe the amazing highway mileage I'm getting! Even with a manual transmission, which usually gets worse gas mileage than CVTs, I averaged over 47mpg on a recent 1,100 mile 95% highway trip while traveling at 65mph. It's truly unbelievable! I made sure to take exact measurements of mileage and gallons added, so it's accurate. The handling is great and the 0-60 around 7.5 seconds is impressive. This sedan sets the standard for others in its segment. I was able to negotiate a great deal with the dealer and I'm thrilled with the quality of the car and the options for the price. The standard LED headlights are superb, the seats are comfortable for long distances, and the trunk is pretty big. With a good-sized gas tank, I was often getting around 600 miles per tank, so I didn't need to stop for gas often at all. I'm enjoying the standard Apple Carplay and love the styling, which reminds me a lot of the Audi A4 from the back. Although I wish it were offered in a hatchback and the S model's stereo system is pretty poor, the stick is a joy to shift, the car tracks straight on the highway, and it's not often you get complimented for a sedan's styling paying below $20k. This is my first Volkswagen, and I'm now a huge fan!

This model has every conceivable tech and luxury item I can imagine. I drive a lot for work and need something comfortable, quiet, and up to date. This Jetta is the best one yet ever. As a business executive, I feel proud and self-confident driving this beauty.

The R-Line Jetta is such a joy to drive! I absolutely love how the screen is positioned, and the seat comfort and climate control are top-notch. Plus, it's quick and fuel-efficient. The cabin is also surprisingly quiet for a smaller vehicle. Overall, I'm thrilled with my initial experience!

The 2019 Jetta S model has been reported to have transmission issues, specifically a grinding noise when driving at around 30mph. Despite VW's claim that this is normal, it is clear that this is a widespread problem affecting all Jettas with the 8-speed auto transmission. It is recommended that potential buyers research this model before making a purchase. It is worth noting that there is currently an ongoing lawsuit investigation into the VW Jetta 8-Speed Transmission Problems.

I have experienced 5 issues in less than 5 months with my Volkswagen VW 2019 Jetta. Despite the dealer claiming that one of the issues, the grinding of brakes, is normal, I have my doubts. I have uploaded a review on YouTube under the title 'Volkswagen VW 2019 Jetta review with all 5 issues' for you to judge for yourself. The brakes are a particular concern for me, and you can hear the 'normal' sound just 3 minutes into the video. I have been driving for 30 years and have never heard anything like it. While the warranty is appreciated, it becomes pointless when the car is brought in for the third time and the dealer claims there is nothing wrong. Other customers have also complained about the same issue, but the dealer insists that this is how Volkswagens sound. This is unacceptable. Additionally, there are other issues such as a back panel popping off and a recall for water leaks. As a result, I am extremely disappointed with my purchase.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your Volkswagen. It seems that there is some confusion regarding the EDL feature, as the Volkswagen representatives have informed you that the car does not have it, while your window sticker claims otherwise. I understand how frustrating this can be for a customer. Additionally, you have noticed some changes in the features of the S model compared to the previous Jetta models. I can imagine how disappointing this must be for you. It seems that you have also faced some quality-related issues with your car, which is unacceptable. I hope that Volkswagen can provide you with a satisfactory solution to these problems. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. If German-built VW's are not available, perhaps building some in China would be a good alternative instead of relying heavily on Mexican plants. In my experience, the quality of work in Mexican plants has been poor, resulting in manufacturing problems such as mechanical reliability issues and poor interior workmanship. However, as the car ages, it performs nicely for a cheaper car. I have taken it on summer vacation three times since 2018 and it rarely gets less than 50 mpg on a summer trip. Overall, it is a nice car for the money, but Volkswagen needs to address these manufacturing issues.

This car has had multiple issues, including noise from the transmission that VW of America claims is normal, but in actuality it is a horrible defect that they are hoping people will not notice. Additionally, there have been multiple sensor failures in wet weather, and the windows roll down when you try to put them up. Despite several attempts to fix these issues, they persist. Unfortunately, the back window cracked into pieces and caused damage to the paint, which both me and my insurance company are on the line for. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to resolve these issues and get the most out of my investment. I am committed to finding a solution and ensuring that my car is in top condition. While I have had a difficult experience, I am confident that I will be able to overcome these challenges and enjoy my car for years to come.

I recently purchased a 2019 Jetta SEL, which is a beautiful and high-tech car. However, I have noticed a grinding or growling sound as soon as I drove away from the dealership. The noise is consistent and mostly happens when the car is trying to shift in low gears. Additionally, it seems to lack power in low gears, which concerns me. Despite my concerns, the VW dealership claims everything is fine. After doing some research, I found out that many people across the U.S. are having similar problems with their 2019 Jettas, including defective transmissions and torque converters. A class action lawsuit has been filed against VW in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (Parrish v. Volkswagen Group of America) regarding these issues. I hope that VW will take responsibility for these problems and address them promptly. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
