2008 Volkswagen Jetta problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2008 Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta 2008 is a popular car model, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners, based on the search results:

  • Engine Misfire: This problem can be caused by a failed ignition coil or spark plug, or a failure in the spark plug wires. The Check Engine light will illuminate when an engine misfire occurs. To fix this issue, you'll need to replace the ignition coil, spark plug, or spark plug wires. This issue affects 2012, 2013, and 2014 models with multiple engine types and an average mileage of 112,000 miles.
  • Power Window Failure: Power windows are a modern luxury in cars, but they can fail due to a failed window regulator. This issue affects 2010, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 90,000 miles. If you're experiencing power window issues with your VW Jetta, schedule a service appointment to replace the regulator.
  • General Electrical Issues: These issues have been difficult to diagnose and are mostly found under the battery. They are caused by a ground wiring issue. This issue affects many models, including 2012, 2013, and 2014 with an average mileage of 150,000 miles. If you're experiencing electrical issues with your Volkswagen Jetta, schedule a service appointment to check the ground wiring.
  • Odor from HVAC Vents: This issue is caused by condensation in the heater case and AC (HVAC) system after the car has been sitting idle for 2 hours or more. The drain system on the car should be checked for debris, but there is also a cleaner available for the heat case. This issue affects 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 50,000 miles. If you're experiencing an odor coming from your vents, schedule a service appointment to fix the issue.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Volkswagen Jetta 2008 owners. If you're experiencing any of these issues, it's recommended to schedule a service appointment with a certified mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-18
  • VIN: 3VWRJ71K78M
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: JUST AFTER I PURCHASED THE USED VEHICLE FROM A PRIVATE PARTY, I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES PER HOUR, WHEN THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING SLAMMED INTO SECOND GEAR, SENDING MY FACE INTO THE STEERING WHEEL, WHILE THE CARS TRAVELLING BEHIND ME HAD TO BRAKE TO AVOID COLLISION. I PULLED OVER, AND TURNED THE CAR OFF TO ASSESS THE REASON, TO NO AVAIL. WHEN I RE-STARTED THE CAR AND PUT IT IN GEAR, IT DROVE FINE UNTIL THE NEXT TIME I DROVE IT. THEN IT DID A REPEAT OF THE PREVIOUS ACTION, SENDING THE TRANSMISSION INTO SAFE MADE WITHOUT ANY NOTICE OR PROVOCATION, AND AGAIN, WHEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE IT DROVE PERFECTLY NORMAL WHILE I DROVE IT DIRECTLY HOME. WHEN I PERFORMED AN OBDII SCAN, IT GENERATED P0746 AS THE PROBLEM, WITH NO OTHER PROBLEMS BEING REPORTED. I AM REPORTING THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, IT COULD HAVE HAVE ENDED VERY BADLY HAD SOMEONE ELSE BEEN BEHIND THE WHEEL, SUCH AS A MOTHER WHO MAY BE DISTRACTED BY HER CHILDREN AT THE TIME, AND I FEEL THIS MATTER SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED ON THE HIGHWAY. PRIOR EXPERIENCE HAS TAUGHT ME THAT HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS SELDOM ONLY HAPPEN TO ONE VEHICLE AT A TIME, AND ALMOST ANYONE THAT EXPERIENCES THIS PROBLEM ON A HIGHWAY COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO MULTIPLE CARS AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

Negative 2008 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Ramiro Botsford 2024-11-28

The car has unfortunately experienced several engine problems since the first few weeks into the lease. The fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced at about 12,000 miles, and more recently, some connectors in the fuse box shorted out, which took 2 days in the shop to diagnose. Currently, there are warning lights coming on and off, such as the fuel cap warning light and the tire pressure light, despite the tires appearing to be properly inflated. However, we are confident in our ability to diagnose and fix any issues that may arise in the future.

I've had a lot of issues with my VW in the past 6 months. It seems like every time I fix one thing, something else goes wrong. I wouldn't recommend getting a VW to anyone. Interestingly, my Audi before this one was also owned by VW. I wonder what happened?

I fell in love with this car the moment I drove it and decided to buy it right away. The engine is very responsive and the 18

I strongly believe that my car is not suitable for me. As someone who is almost 5'9

  5. Lloyd Kunze 2024-05-28

German engineering may not have impressed me with this car, as I experienced oil leaks, gas cap malfunctions, and interior vibrations at just 10,000 miles. However, it is undeniably fun to drive, with a race car feel that requires race car type maintenance. While it may not be for everyone, this car requires an owner who truly loves it. It would be a shame for it to become just another pre-loved VW.

This is my fourth Jetta. I've owned a few in the past and I always seem to come back to them when it's time for a new car. I guess that says it all!

I recently read that this car was marketed towards women, and I have to say, they hit the nail on the head! It's incredibly easy to drive, but still has plenty of power. I absolutely love my Jetta! And to any guys out there, don't be put off by the marketing - I'd be more than happy to let you take it for a spin. I promise you won't feel emasculated driving it! The gas mileage is also really impressive - I once traded in an American car that was supposed to get 30 mpg, but that was a total lie. The Jetta, on the other hand, lives up to its promises and is super reliable. It's the perfect car for winter, even in the 12 inches of snow we get here - although I would recommend getting snow tires just to be safe.

Love it! I bought this car for my wife, but I haven't stopped driving it at every opportunity. It's so much fun to drive, fast, and comfortable. The only issue I've had is with the DSG transmission. I wish I had bought the manual instead. While the DSG shifts smoothly, it can be awkward to start and difficult to start on a hill. It's kind of like driving a manual shift without the benefit of controlling it with a clutch. The dealership has received many complaints, but they have extended the DSG warranty. While this may not be the best solution, it does show that they are trying to address the issue. Overall, I would definitely buy this car again. It's the most fun car I've ever driven!

  4. Jed Schimmel 2024-08-21

    1) There was one serious defect upon purchase, a broken gear shift. 2) However, I have not experienced any problems since. 3) I am surprised to read about poor gas mileage. I consistently achieve 30-32 mpg on the highway, which is the best I have ever had. 4) I do wish it could last forever.

I purchase a 2008 VW Jetta SE with the tiptronic transmission, sport styling package and 17 inch aptiva wheels. This car has exceeded my expectations again and again. I have owned numerous European cars and have to say this car feels and drives like my Audis and Volvos, maybe even better. VW has really thought out every little detail. The sport styling package with the 17 inch wheels really makes it stand out in the crowd. The build quality puts any car in it's class to shame. A joy to drive!
