Volkswagen Jetta 2009 problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

- VIN: 3VWJM71K99M

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-22
- VIN: 3VWPL71K09M
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving the vehicle, suddenly and without warning it downshifted, went into limp mode and became stuck in second gear. Fortunately, I was driving on a secondary road with little traffic. Had I been on a major road or highway, its likely I would have been rear ended resulting in injury/death. I have taken vehicle to dealership where it has been confirmed it is the DSG transmission caused by a faulty Mechatronics unit. I am being told the entire transmission needs to be replaced. Had VW recalled and fixed the problem earlier, I would not need a new transmission now. VW is refusing to pay for cost to replace it. After speaking with VW service representatives and mechanics, it is well known by VW this could happen. There have been recalls in other countries - Australia, Singapore, Japan, China, etc. to replace faulty unit/transmission because it caused deaths. VW only did an extended warranty for cars in the USA. My vehicle is beyond that warranty.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: ABS Module Assembly all packet, It turns that this kind of vehicles are controling the power Steering, anti skid braking system, brake lights, ABS, Skid lights come ON and the Steering also come ON it is scanned and remove the codes once and seemed to work for a day or two and down again, goes back to scan and now me and the mechanic test drive it together and found that the Main ABS modulator is not connecting and goes on and of the scanner where it carries a faulty communication among its components and causing all this disconfort? problem herein is that it is hard to tell when will it do it again or why is it failing? and causing all kind of problem with lgihts blinking all the time? but the biggest problem here is: that I am not the only one complaning about it, there is many people complaning about the problem! more that I expected, and seems like they do not know about making a report it is exact same problem! and reason they are not fixing it is: becasue it is to costly, It runs an apparent $2,000.00 dollars to get parts and labor? this is indeed a recall issue that must be absorbed by manufacturer. Please help us get it done I stopped the car since it acted with all this lights september is when I started to feel the disconfort but November when I had all set of lights come ON where as I mentioned, we clear the codes, "Mechanic" and runs for few days and back again. SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

- VIN: 3VWRZ71K39M
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: This vehicle was purchased 11/2016 from a dealer/mechanic. He bought it at auction, reconstructed it and got the approvals to return it to full operation from the Massachusetts DOT. The title showed 'reconstructed' and 'prior collision'. Volkswagen notified us of Safety Recal 45F2 in 2017 - ABS control module - and we had the recall performed at Colonial VW in Westborough Mass in 2017. There is an extended warranty VWP-17-03 on vehicles repaired by Safety Recall 45F2. The car's ABS light illuminated and the dealership ran a diagnostic which ran code 16352 - control module faulty static. VW is telling the dealership that they will not honor the warranty because the car is a total loss. It is NOT a total loss, it has not been in an accident since it was reconstructed before we purchased it six years ago. I called VW and they said they won't cover it because it's a mechanical issue not a software issue but that's also not true. I see technical bulletin's online that say if Fault Code 01130 and or 16352 appear that warranty should apply, but they are not honoring their own warranty

Tracy said the control module for the ABS didn't work and they couldn't replace it for me until the headquarters approved it or something about the recall didn't include the control module I can't afford to fix this it's all ABS connected that's what the safety call is for safety.

But time time I could not turn the car off without pulling a fuse. Obvious safety issues if a car won't turn off and basically useless vehicle. It had not been inspected by others, but online I found this problem is not uncommon. There where no warning messages of the problem prior to failure. As mentioned before, for years it has been difficult to turn on. First time I could not turn it off.

We kept resetting as advised by Sisk Automotive in Hopkinsville, Ky (not a VW dealer). Wyatt Johnson in Clarksville, Tn completed the recall in 2017. In Feb 2022, the abs has failed creating ECP fault and almost every light on the dash is now on. I believe the abs should have been replaced in 2017 and the dealer just put a quick fix to say the recall was complete. I need help fixing my unsafe car that VW failed to fix in the original recall.

Another time I was turning onto the highway and trying to beat the long line of cars that just got a green light and as I was mid turn my steering locked up and I fishtailed into the center lane almost into oncoming traffic. Had I been a more inexperienced driver neither of those times would have ended well.

- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2008 AND AUGUST 2009. THE WIRING HARNESS OF A TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN THE DIRECT SHIFT GEARBOX (DSG) MAY HAVE CONNECTOR WIRES THAT WERE INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED. WITH INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED CONNECTOR WIRES, A TEMPERATURE SENSOR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FALSELY DETECT A HIGH GEARBOX OIL TEMPERATURE, CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO ABRUPTLY SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE SELECTOR LEVER POSITION INDICATOR WITHIN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WILL FLASH. IN ADDITION, THE "DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL" INDICATOR LIGHT WILL BE ILLUMINATED, ALERTING THE DRIVER TO APPLY THE BRAKES.
- Consequence: THE ABRUPT SHIFT TO NEUTRAL COULD LEAD TO A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: VOLKSWAGEN WILL REPROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 20, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

- Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
- Summary: VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING 25,594 MY 2006-2009 JETTA 5TH GENERATION EQUIPPED WITH 2.01 ENGINE. THE FASTENING SCREW CONTACT SURFACES ON THE DRIVESHAFT COVER PLATE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED TO FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS. SOME SCREWS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TORQUED PROPERLY DURING ASSEMBLY AND COULD LOOSEN OVER TIME, CAUSING A KNOCKING SOUND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THE DRIVESHAFT SCREWS COULD LOOSEN TO THE POINT WHERE THE DRIVESHAFT DETACHES FROM THE GEARBOX.
- Consequence: IF THE VEHICLE IS MOVING WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE DETACHED DRIVESHAFT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE THE GEARBOX HOUSING. A DAMAGE GEARBOX HOUSING COULD LEAK GEARBOX OIL ONTO THE STREET AND CREATE A RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH FOR BOTH THE DRIVER AND OTHER MOTORISTS.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE DRIVESHAFT SCREWS AND REPLACE THE SCREWS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 24, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it just a month ago with 34k miles and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. The exterior design of this car is absolutely stunning and I find it to be much nicer than the 2012 Jetta. I also appreciate that this 2009 Jetta has maintained its quality, unlike the newer models which have backtracked in quality to compete with Japanese and Korean sedans. The interior is also fantastic, with top-notch quality features such as seat heaters, auxiliary input, and a soft touch dashboard. I feel like I'm riding in a luxury car, which is amazing considering the price I paid for it - only 14k! Overall, I am absolutely in love with this car and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish vehicle.

This car is absolutely stunning! It's understated yet stylish, and the comfort level is off the charts. The interior is truly remarkable, from the luxurious leather-wrapped steering wheel to the beautifully lit instrumentation. The overall perception of elegance and quality is simply outstanding. And can you believe I got all of this in a baby German sports sedan for just $17,000? That's an incredible steal! It's truly an amazing value. In summary, this car is a refined piece of automotive art that you won't want to miss out on. And just take a look at the difference between the reviewers' ratings and the consumers' ratings above - it's clear that those who buy this car absolutely love it!

Congratulations on your new Jetta wagon! It sounds like you had a great time purchasing and driving it. However, it's unfortunate that you experienced some issues with the car shortly after purchasing it. It's understandable that this has caused some doubt and worry about the car's reliability and potential repair costs. It's great to hear that the dealer is handling the situation well. Hopefully, they will be able to resolve the issue quickly and get you back on the road enjoying your new car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Our family has owned both Corolla and Civic in the past, but this time we decided to go with the Jetta. We were extremely pleased with what we saw and realized how much we had been missing out on in previous years. The carefree maintenance is truly amazing and a testament to the car's reliability. The cargo space is also very well designed and surprisingly spacious - we think it might even be bigger than the Camry! Taking the Jetta on the highway was an amazing experience and overall, it was a lot of fun. The dealer explained the safety features and construction, and we were impressed - no other compact car comes close to it. We were blown away by the German engineering. We are definitely considering replacing our Corolla and Civic with another Volkswagen in the near future. From now on, we are proud to call ourselves a Volkswagen family!

The Jetta Sportwagen is a great car with decent performance and fuel economy. However, the dealer experience could use some improvement. It seems that VW doesn't cover squeaks and rattles after six months, which can be frustrating. During my last service appointment, I dropped my car off first thing in the morning for a routine 90 minute service, but it ended up taking four hours. When I called for a status update, I was told that customers who wait there are given preference and they'd call me back in an hour. Before you buy, it's worth asking about what's excluded from the

After 32 months of owning my wagon, I have unfortunately experienced multiple problems with the suspension and alloy wheels. Despite replacing 7 wheels, the issues persisted until I switched to steel wheels, which have been problem-free. The dealers' prices are exorbitant and they have not shown any concern for my issues. However, I am confident in my decision to wait for the 2012 models from Kia and replace my Jetta. While I was able to get 120k miles out of my previous car (a Honda), this particular vehicle has only lasted 45k miles.

This review is for the 2009, but based on my research affects all TDI models. All TDIs have a High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) and they are prone to failure when the diesel fuel gets contaminated. Unfortunately, my Diesel somehow got water in the diesel and apparently, based on the rust in the tank, this had been an ongoing problem. At 107000 miles, the fuel system had to be replaced to the tune of $5,800 dollars. Please consider this when purchasing, as diesel fuel standards in the US are lower than that of Europe and VW hasn't taken that into consideration.

Before buying this car, there is an important thing that shoppers need to know. This particular make and model, manufactured in Mexico in the year 2015, has been reported to have several issues. I have personally experienced a lot of problems with my car since I purchased it in March 2018, with only 81,000 miles on it. I had to invest almost $4,000 into it, and now there are more issues with the electrical system, fuel pump, and ABS control module. After doing some research, I found out that many people have faced similar problems. Unfortunately, VW's warranty on recalls is not very helpful, as it only covers the surface problem and not the underlying issue. This means that you end up spending more money than the car is worth, and when you go to sell it, you won't even get half of your investment back. It's really sad how VW has started using cheap materials, and the quality of their cars is not as good as it used to be. Unless you have a lot of money to spend on repairs or you're a mechanic, buying this car will be a money pit. It's important to be aware of these issues before making a purchase.

Although the car's concept is ideal and I initially enjoyed it, the poor initial quality was disappointing. However, I am confident in Volkswagen's ability to rectify the issues, as they are covering the repairs under warranty. While the problems with the navigation system, ABS, exhaust system, and fuel pump were frustrating, I am still satisfied with my purchase and believe that Volkswagen will continue to improve their quality in the future.
