Volkswagen Jetta 2002 problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

ADDITIONALLY, THE JETTA WILL DIE THE FIRST TIME I TRY TO START IT AS MY FUEL LEVEL APPROACHES 1/4, ESPECIALLY IF I AM PARKED ON AN INCLINE. HOWEVER, IT NEVER FAILS TO START ON THE SECOND TRY ONCE SOME FUEL HAS BEGUN MOVING THROUGH THE SYSTEM. FULLY REFUELING ALLEVIATES ALL PROBLEMS.

ISSUE HAS BEEN REPORTED (VIA WEB) ACROSS NUMEROUS MODELS AND YEARS. CALLED VW FOR FIX; AS TECHS APPEAR VOID OF A GENERAL CONSENSUS TO PROBLEM/FIX. UNFORTUNATELY, VW REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND/OR PROVIDE SOLUTION TO CUSTOMER(S). REFERS ME TO DEALER, WHICH IS OVER AN HOUR AWAY. JUST NEED INFO TO ORDER REPAIR KIT AND RESTORE VEHICLE INTEGRITY/SAFETY. CONCERNED AS THIS MAY BE A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD; DUE TO THE VOLUME OF HEAT GENERATED BY WIRING WITHIN INTERNAL COMPARTMENT. IN TURN, I UNDERSTAND THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE THE NORMAL WARRANTY PERIOD. AS STATED, JUST WANT AN ANSWER TO REPAIR; HOWEVER, VW CUSTOMER CARE REP COMMENTED I SHOULD REPORTING THIS ISSUE IN HOPES TO DRAW ADDITIONAL ATTENTION OF OTHER OWNERS AND, EVENTUALLY, THE NHTSA TO GET VW TO RESPOND TO CUSTOMERS QUESTIONS.

Negative Volkswagen Jetta 2002 car reviews

  1. Guiseppe Hayes 2024-11-22

My wife and I purchased this car with 45k miles on it. Unfortunately, we have experienced several mechanical issues since day one. The car died just 7 days after we bought it, and we have had ongoing problems with the engine light, passenger door, trunk release, and catalytic converter. Despite replacing the engine mount, the engine light remains on and the car shakes excessively. The car is currently in the shop and requires a new wheel bearing and complete tune-up, which will cost $1200. We have had to fix the car four times this year alone, and it requires an oil change every 1500 miles. Regrettably, our experience with this VW has been disappointing and we will not be purchasing from them again.

  2. Otto Cronin 2024-11-14

This car has unfortunately had many problems, resulting in frequent and expensive repairs. It seems that most of these repairs can only be done by VW. In the last 15 months alone, there have been issues with the valve body costing $2600, overheating costing $440, the AC cooling fan costing $625, and a new water pump costing $920. Additionally, there have been other issues such as rear joint bearings, engine light coming on, cheap plastic on the interior, broken knobs, broken armrest, door handle material peeling off, radio quitting and only VW having the special key to replace the fuse, and greasy insulation oozing from the doors. Unfortunately, there were also a half dozen recalls in the first couple of years, including power windows and brakes. It is worth noting that the resale value of this car is not great, and it tends to depreciate faster than other brands once the warranty is out.

I really enjoyed this car when I first got it. It was so cute and I loved the turbo engine and heated seats. However, after a year of ownership, I started experiencing some issues. Unfortunately, I've had to spend quite a bit of money on repairs, especially in the last two years. The interior features are mostly made of plastic and tend to break easily, which is a shame. Additionally, the backseat can be a bit cramped for adult passengers. Despite these issues, I still have a soft spot for this car.

This car has experienced several issues, including heated seats catching fire and the engine needing replacement at only 70000 miles. Despite regular maintenance, these problems have been a source of frustration. It is not recommended to purchase this vehicle.

For a 4 cylinder, it's surprisingly peppy! Although I do sometimes wish I had splurged for the 1.8, I still absolutely love my Jetta and wouldn't trade it for the world. The leather/cold weather package (including heated seats!) is definitely worth the price of the car altogether, not to mention the reliability. Even a year later, all of our friends are still jealous. It's clear that those Germans really know what they're doing!

Before I bought my Jetta, I was considering the BMW 325i. After comparing both, I found that for everyday use, the Jetta drives just as nicely as the 325i. It looks great, is fun to drive, and has great power from the VR6 engine with a super smooth transmission. There is no other car out there the size of the Jetta that offers such a great combination of looks, features, and the German feel with a V6 engine at this price.

I love this car! It's been my trusty companion for two years and I've put 85,000 miles on it. I take good care of it by changing the oil and rotating the tires, and it just keeps on running without any problems. Plus, it gets an amazing 50 mpg! With gas prices at $3.00/gallon, this car is a no-brainer. It's fun to drive, peppy, and has great fuel economy.

I really like the interior of this car, it has plenty of useful features and a good design. The exterior looks great too. However, I have had some issues with reliability since the day I got it. Unfortunately, it has been in the shop at least once a month and repairs on German cars can be expensive. The check engine light seems to be on more than it is off. If you are considering buying a Volkswagen, it might be a good idea to have some extra money and a backup car just in case.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2002 VW Jetta VR6 GLX. I bought it back in late 2005, just before the new models hit the dealerships. I knew I was paying a bit more for a VW, but this model had all the extras that reflected the price. The pick-up for a small sedan without aftermarket enhancements has to be one of the best! While the fuel economy isn't great, it's a V6 so that's to be expected. I've done minimal maintenance and the car is still running great. The only downside is that it doesn't have Mp3 capability, but I guess since it's a 2002 that wasn't an option. Wouldn't it be amazing if they made the Jetta in an AWD model? Thanks for listening!
