1994 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 1994 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta, first introduced in 1979, has been a popular compact car for many years.
- AC System Failure: One of the most common problems with the 1994 Volkswagen Jetta is the failure of the air conditioning system. This can manifest as the AC blowing warm air instead of cold, or not blowing any air at all. The cause of this issue can be a malfunctioning AC compressor clutch, electrical problems, or a refrigerant leak.
- Engine Misfiring: Another common problem with the 1994 Volkswagen Jetta is engine misfiring. This can be caused by faulty spark plugs or ignition coils, a clogged-up air filter, problems with the fuel injector, or mechanical failures in the piston.
- Transmission Issues: Some owners of the 1994 Volkswagen Jetta have reported transmission issues, particularly with high mileage automatic transmissions. These issues can include shifting problems, such as the transmission slipping, jerking, or not shifting smoothly.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems are also a common issue with the 1994 Volkswagen Jetta. These can include issues with the car's electrical system, such as warning lights appearing on the dashboard, alarms sounding, or electrical components not functioning properly.
- Body Rust: Rust is a common problem with older vehicles, and the 1994 Volkswagen Jetta is no exception. Rust can appear on various parts of the car's body, including the doors, fenders, and frame.
It is important to note that these issues may not be exclusive to the 1994 model year and may also affect other model years of the Volkswagen Jetta. If you are experiencing any of these issues with your Volkswagen Jetta, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and address the problem. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these issues from occurring or becoming more serious.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-07-21
- VIN: 3VWRA21H4RM
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: THE IN TANK FUEL PUMP DESIGN HAS THE ACTUAL PUMP SITTING IN A PLASTIC HOUSING WITH RUBBER SEALS AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM TO KEEP FUEL AROUND THE PUMP FOR COOLING, EVEN WHEN THE TANK QUANTITY GETS LOW. THE RUBBER SEALS ON MY FUEL PUMP ROTTED AND DISINTEGRATED. THIS WOULD ALLOW THE PUMP TO OPERATE WITHOUT THE DESIGNED COOLING OF THE PUMP AT LOW GAS LEVELS. OVERHEATING OF THE PUMP BECAUSE OF THIS COULD RESULT IN A GAS TANK FIRE OR EXPLOSION. *TR

- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: AIRBAG CONTROL MODULE FAILURE WITHOUT WARNING. I NOTICED THE RED LIGHT FOR THE AIRBAG DID NOT GO OFF (NOT NOTICEABLE IN DAYLIGHT) THIS COULD BE A SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE. THE CAR ONLY HAS 92K MILES. THE WARNING LIGHT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE IN BRIGHT DAYLIGHT. IF IT FAILS IN THE MIDDLE OF A JOURNEY THERE IS NO WARNING SOUND.... CONSUMERS CAN BE KILLED OR MAIMED IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS WITHOUT REALIZING THIS PART HAS STOPPED FUNCTIONING, DRIVERS MAY GET A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY. I TOOK THE CAR TO A VW DEALER WAS TOLD THAT THE CONTROL MODULE FOR THE AIRBAG HAD STOPPED WORKING. WE, (MY HUSBAND AND I), CALLED VW OF AMERICA, BUT WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS 1. OUT OF WARRANTY, 2. 'OLD' (13 YRS) AND 3. 92, 000 MILES THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT WOULD BE DONE TO RECTIFY THE ISSUE. WE DISAGREED; THIS IS NOT A PART THAT SHOULD WEAR OUT, ESPECIALLY IF THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. IT'S NOT THE SAME AS ENGINE PARTS, TIRES, BODY, ETC. THAT SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO WEAR AFTER TIME AND MILEAGE. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SEEMED ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT IT IF THE CAR IS WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD. I AM SUPPOSED TO GET BACK TO DEALER WITH A DECISION TO REPLACE THE MODULE. *JB

I purchased this car back in 2004 for $250 when it had 185,000 miles on it. At the time, it required a timing belt, tune-up (spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, belts and filters, rear shocks, and brakes). The car appeared to be in good condition with no rust, and the interior was perfect. The previous owner had recently replaced the muffler and tires. Fortunately, a close friend of mine is a master VW mechanic, so I was able to get all the parts and labor for only $750. I thought that for $1000, the car could last another 2 years, but to my surprise, it ran very well, was fast, economical, and fun to drive. After 5 years, I invested more money into it, including a new starter, radiator, rotors and pads, muffler, and master cylinder, which cost me $880 for parts and labor. Today, it is still running strong with 23,000 miles. I make sure to change the oil every 3,000 miles.
-
It's great to hear that you found the vehicle to be excellent during that period!
-
It's been more reliable than the two Toyota Corollas I've owned in the past. I even drove it cross country! The 10-year/100,000-mile warranty came in handy when I had to fix the transmission at 98,000 miles. It's going to be a sad day when I sell it.
-
This car has been great! However, I have had some issues with the electrical system. Unfortunately, two of my windows don't work.
-
I absolutely love how warm this car is, even during the cold winter months! The electrically heated seats and good heater make it the warmest car I've ever owned. Plus, the manual gear box makes for better mileage and easy shifting. I was worried about comfort on long trips over 1000 miles, but no need to worry - the ride is not too rough and the good handling makes driving fun. Although my mileage has been cut down on short trips, I've still managed to average 47+ for the first 22,000 miles. Overall, I'm very happy with this car!
Wyatt McClure 2024-10-25
I drove my '94 Jetta for 2 years, but unfortunately, it has been sitting in my driveway for the past 3 months. It was not worth putting another nickel into it. The worst part about owning this car is that Volkswagens are harder to fix, so the labor costs more, and the parts are so expensive. Simple spark plug wires cost me $100.00! My car just hit the 120,000 mile mark, and I know they're supposed to run forever, but no one ever mentions how much it will cost to keep them running. I finally decided to count my losses and recently sold it for 1/5 of what I bought it for 2 years ago.

Yes, the tank... I have beaten on this 1994 Jetta, however, I changed the oil every 3,000 miles. I'm happy to say that this Jetta has just turned 160,000 miles and has many more to go. Let's keep this good thing going!
Barton Stiedemann 2024-06-11
The car has been driven less than 6,000 miles per year, with a total of just over 50,000 miles. Despite this, there have been several issues with the car, including a broken sunroof, cup holder, and seat recliner handles. The antenna also fell off while driving on the highway, and the driver's seat required a costly repair. Additionally, the engine has a tendency to overheat in hot weather or heavy traffic, causing the oil light to beep. Although the check engine light is always on, the car has been inspected and deemed to be in good condition. In terms of fuel efficiency, the car gets 18mpg in town. It is worth noting that the radio will not function if there is something in the cigarette lighter.
Lula Greenholt 2024-04-03
I purchased a new car after my previous Jetta was totaled. Despite my positive experience with my first Jetta, this new car has unfortunately been plagued with numerous issues, including a broken radio, malfunctioning dash lights, and broken door locks, power windows, and sunroof. Despite numerous attempts to resolve these issues, including contacting my local dealership and VW of America, I have not received any satisfactory assistance. While the car has been a disappointment, I will continue to use it until it is no longer feasible to do so.
Earnest Ratke 2024-03-15
You bought the 94' Jetta GLX in 2000 with only 28,000 miles, which is amazing! However, it seems like there have been a lot of little things that have gone wrong since then. For example, both window regulators for the rear have broken, the trunk has rusted, the left rear blinker is blown, the air bag isn't working, and the driver seat is loose. That must be really frustrating! Is there anything I can do to help?
