1997 Volkswagen Jetta problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 1997 Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta 1997 is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most common issues is related to the high mileage automatic transmissions, which may have shifting problems. This can manifest as difficulty shifting gears, delayed shifting, or even complete transmission failure. The root cause of these problems can be due to wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or manufacturing defects.

Another common problem with the Volkswagen Jetta 1997 is related to the ignition coil failure. The ignition coils produce a high-voltage current that fires the spark plugs. However, VW coils often fail, causing the engine to suddenly lose power. This can lead to shaking or hesitation and leave the driver in a vulnerable position. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, exposure to heat and moisture, and manufacturing defects.

The Volkswagen Jetta 1997 is also known for having problems with the clock spring failure. The clock spring is a critical component that allows the steering wheel controls to communicate with the car's electrical system. When it fails, the driver's side airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls can become disabled, posing a safety risk to the driver and passengers. This issue can be caused by wear and tear, exposure to heat and moisture, and manufacturing defects.

The Volkswagen Jetta 1997 is also known for having problems with the front assist system. This system is designed to detect obstacles in the car's path and apply the brakes to avoid a collision. However, some owners have reported that the system is detecting objects that do not exist, causing the car to brake unexpectedly and potentially causing accidents. This issue can be caused by software bugs, sensor failures, or other electrical problems.

In addition to these specific problems, the Volkswagen Jetta 1997 has been reported to have a high number of complaints in several categories, including engine, interior, transmission, electrical, and brakes. These complaints can range from minor issues, such as rattles and squeaks, to major problems, such as engine failure and transmission failure.

In conclusion, the Volkswagen Jetta 1997 has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to major safety risks, and can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, exposure to heat and moisture, manufacturing defects, and software bugs. If you own a Volkswagen Jetta 1997, it is important to stay up-to-date on recalls and maintenance schedules to ensure that your car remains safe and reliable.

THIS HAS HAPPENED 2 TIMES WHEN I'M GOING AROUND 60PMH AND HAVE DROPPED INTO 4TH GEAR TO PASS SOMEONE. I HAD TO SHUT THE CAR OFF TO STOP IT FROM ACCELERATING. THEN WHEN THE CAR WAS SHUT OFF AND IN PARK AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS UP, I TRIED TURNING THE CAR ON AND AS SOON AS I TURNED IT ON IT REVVED UP REALLY HIGH. IT FINALLY TURNED ON NORMALLY AFTER IN TURNED IT ON AND OFF A COUPLE TIMES. THE ACCELERATOR HAS ALSO STUCK WHEN I WAS GOING AROUND 70-75 AND HIT THE ACCELERATOR TO PASS SOMEONE TO GET INTO A DIFFERENT LANE, I DID NOT DROP INTO 4TH GEAR, I WAS IN 5TH GEAR THE WHOLE TIME. THIS TIME I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF 5 LANES OF TRAFFIC AND DIDN'T HAVE THE OPTION TO SHUT IT OFF, I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THEN SHIFTED IT BACK INTO 5TH GEAR AND THAT FIXED IT THAT TIME. *TR

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-30
  • VIN: 3VWTD81H4VM
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: WHILE PARKING MY 1992 VOLKSWAGEN CORRADO BACK IN LATE JANUARY 2005, MY HEATER CORE LEAK ALL OVER MY PASSENGER FLOOR, AND HAD STEAM COMING OUT THE VENTS AND FOGGING UP MY WINDOWS. AFTER INVESTIGATING ON THE INTERNET I SAW THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM ON WATER COOLED VOLKSWAGENS. ON 7/30/05 I HAD A SIMILAR EVENT HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE'S 1997 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE WINDSHIELD SUDDENLY FOGGED UP AND HAD STEAM COMING FROM THE VENTS AND A COOLANT SMELL IN THE CAR. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD TO WIPE THE WINDSHIELD WITH MY HAND SO THAT I CAN SEE OUT THE WINDSHIELD. I PULLED OVER AND CHECKED MY COOLANT TANK, THERE WAS A DROP IN FLUID. WHAT IS IN COMMON BETWEEN BOTH VEHICLES IS THEY ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE SAME ENGINE, THE 2.8L VR6. AFTER RESEARCHING AGAIN ON THE INTERNET I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THE CARS IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 92V050000 AND MOST WATER COOLED VOLKSWAGEN MANUFACTURED AFTER THAT DATE SHARE THE SAME PART NUMBER FOR THE HEATER CORE. IT SEEMS THAT THE FAULTY PART IS THE HEATER CORE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS, LUCKILY THERE WAS NOT MUCH TRAFFIC WHEN MY WINDSHIELD FOGGED UP, AND NO ONE WAS HURT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *JB

VISIBILITY,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-24
  • VIN: 3VWTD81H9VM
  • Components: VISIBILITY,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I FEEL LIKE MY JETTA IS A DEATHTRAP. IN THE FOUR YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED IT, I HAVE HAD FOUR OF THE POWER WINDOW MECHANISMS MALFUNCTION. CURRENTLY, THE FRONT PASSENGER WINDOW IS STUCK SHUT, AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE BACK WINDOW IS STUCK OPEN! THIS IS ESPECIALLY CONCERNING BECAUSE THROUGHOUT THE COLD SEASON, AT LEAST ONE, IF NOT ALL OF THE DOORS WILL NOT OPEN. PEOPLE THINK MY BOYFRIEND IS BEING A GENTLEMAN, BUT REALLY, HE HAS TO WALK AROUND AND LET ME OUT. THIS IS NOT THE FROZEN LOCK PHENOMENON COMMON TO MANY VEHICLES- THE ACTUAL LATCH MECHANISM MALFUNCTIONS. WE HAVE BEEN REPEATEDLY TRAPPED IN OUR CAR AND HAD TO CLIMB OUT THE WINDOW! THE FAILURES ARE SO CONSISTENT, SO EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR (AND THE REPAIRS DO NOT LAST) THAT WE DRIVE AROUND LIKE THIS BECAUSE COST OF THE REPAIRS EXCEEDS THE VALUE OF THE CAR. HELP!

  • Summary: DT: THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE WHEEL HOUSING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR PROTECTOR SHIELD. WHEN THEY INSTALLED THE HOOK IT MADE NOISE AND IT FELL OFF. WHEN IT FELL OFF IT STARTED TO SQUEAK. HE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, AND TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER, AND THEY PUT IN ANOTHER HOOK . THE HOOK FELL OFF AGAIN, AND HE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THEY WOULD NOT HELP HIM. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER MECHANIC, WHO TOLD HIM THE RECALL WORK WAS DONE WRONGLY. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HOLE DRILLED FOR THE HOOK TO LATCH ONTO. THE LETTER STATED IT WAS A SAFETY RECALL, WK14. • Summary: THIS IS ANOTHER OF THE MANY CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE POWER WINDOWS IN VOLKSWAGEN CARS. CURRENTLY, MY FRONT PASSENGER WINDOW IS STUCK DOWN AND WILL NOT RAISE. IT WILL REQUIRE A NEW WINDOW REGULATOR. MY BACK WINDOWS ARE ALSO CURRENTLY STUCK IN THE UP POSITION. I HAD PREVIOUSLY BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO CHECK THE RIGHT REAR WINDOW. VOLKSWAGEN INFORMED ME THAT IT NEEDED A REGULATOR AND THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD COST $800!!! FOR ONE WINDOW!!! I STILL HAD ONE MORE WINDOW TO FIX AT THAT POINT. THE REPAIRS WOULD COST ALMOST 1/3 OF THE TOTAL VALUE OF MY CAR!! SO NEEDLESS TO SAY, MY REAR WINDOWS HAVE BEEN STUCK UP FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS. NOW MY FRONT WINDOW IS STUCK DOWN. THIS IS A SAFETY RISK. THE CAR IS NOW COMPLETELY VULNERABLE TO THEFT AND THE ELEMENTS. DOING SOME RESEARCH, I HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS DEFECT. I HAVE ALSO FOUND A TECHNICAL BULLETIN REGARDING WINDOW REGULATOR MOTORS. BULLETIN #9704039704F. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY VOLKSWAGEN AND A RECALL NEEDS TO BE ISSUED. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, IVE BEEN LUCKY SO FAR. MOST OF THESE DEFECTIVE WINDOWS SIMPLY FALL INTO THE CAR. THIS IS A SAFETY RISK FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE CAR AND NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH.

I THEN STARTED THE CAR, PULLED OUT OF THE PARKING LOT, AND PUT THE BLINKER ON TO MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN. I STOPPED AT A LIGHT, AND WHILE THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE AND THE BRAKE WAS ON, THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD WITH SUDDEN ACCELERATION. I THOUGHT I WAS IMAGING IT, BUT THEN IMMEDIATELY THE CAR BEGAN RACING WILDLY (LIKE IT WAS GOING 80MPH). LUCKILY I HAD MY FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE WHICH PREVENTED ME FROM LURCHING FORWARD INTO THE ONCOMING HIGHWAY TRAFFIC PASSING IN FRONT OF ME. I TRIED TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, BUT NOTHING I DID STOPPED THE CAR FROM RACING. FINALLY, IN A PANIC, I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE WITH THE KEY, AND PUT MY BLINKERS ON WHILE I RECOVERED FROM THE SHOCK OF WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I STARTED UP THE CAR AND WITH FEAR IN MY HEART PULLED FORWARD. THE CAR ACTED NORMALLY FOR THE REMAINDER OF MY TRIP HOME. Negative 1997 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Jaylin Pouros 2024-10-22

I bought this car a year ago, but unfortunately the radio and speakers had been stolen. Shortly after, the exhaust broke loose and I had to pay $450 for a new dual-muffler system (excluding catalytic converter). However, I fixed everything from there back. The trunk opener latch was a bit touchy, but I managed to fix it. I had the front and rear alignment fixed a month ago, but it needs to be done again. The brakes are glazed over and the check engine light is on due to a sensor near the fuel tank dealing with economy. I also had to replace the power steering reservoir and 2 hoses, which cost me an excessive $520. The transmission seems to be giving out as it jerks during acceleration. The gas mileage is not bad, but it could be better. It gets 29 highway miles per gallon, but the Civic has more power and runs 38 highway miles per gallon.

Hello! I noticed that you're having some trouble with your car's door alarm, as well as some issues with the engine sputtering and the side door molding strips falling off. Don't worry, these are all common problems that can be easily fixed. For the door alarm, it seems like it's being triggered whenever the rear door is opened or the electric window is operated. As for the engine sputtering, it's possible that there's some hesitation and poor running for a few days, but then it's fine for weeks at a time. Lastly, I understand that there's no place to put stuff in your car, as the cup holder under the ashtray is unusable for anything taller than a soda. I recommend buying some double-sided tape ahead of time to fix the side door molding strips. Also, VWs are notorious for electrical problems, so it might be worth looking into fixing those. Let me know if you need any further assistance!

I purchased my car 2-3 years ago and unfortunately, I have experienced consistent issues with the transmission slipping. Initially, it was manageable, but over time it has worsened. I have spent more money on repairs than the initial cost of the car at the dealership. I received an estimate of $3000 to replace the transmission, which is not feasible for me. I am considering purchasing a Honda or a small truck instead. While I have always been fond of VW, I am disappointed with the issues I have experienced with this particular model.

I bought my Jetta new in the summer of 1997 and it has been a reliable car for me. The engine, transmission, brakes and handling have never let me down. Although, I have had to replace the side molding twice, the rear tail light, and an interior light. The A/C recirc button malfunctioned and the passenger side locks freeze every winter. Once, the passenger side lock actually came out as I pulled the key out of it! There have been several other minor problems as well. Despite these issues, I still find this car enjoyable to drive. Just be prepared for the occasional repairs that need to be done every 6 months.

There aren't many cars that offer better driving experience for your money than this one. The VR6 engine provides ample power, the handling is more than capable, and there are plenty of luxury features, including excellent sport seats and a power sunroof. However, the car's build quality has been a concern, with issues ranging from the clutch and shift mechanism to the air conditioning, cruise control, and engine computer chips. Additionally, several trim pieces have come apart or fallen off entirely. In conclusion, while this car is great to drive, its build quality could be improved.

This used car has been fantastic! It gets nearly 50 mpg and the ride is great. The build is solid and rattle-free, even at this mileage. I would definitely recommend a used VW TDI to anyone considering a diesel. These late 90's TDI's are very reliable, even more so than the 99.5's, and priced very reasonably.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for a few months now and I've mostly used it for long trips on the freeway. I'm really impressed with its gas mileage on these trips and it has plenty of passing power even in top gear at 70 MPH. It's also a lot of fun to drive, even though it may be a bit underpowered. It's a car that really wants to be driven and handles twisty roads with ease. Overall, I think it's a great car with excellent German engineering at a reasonable price.

Your father got this car from a VW dealership in 1999 and sold it to you in 2007. It's amazing that it's still on the original clutch and nothing has fallen off it. It gets up to 40 mpg and the brakes have lasted for five years. We are gentle on our cars, but this car is simply amazing. The engine sounds beautiful and still runs like new! It even fits three car seats! The only downside is the radio, but we make do.

PERFECT, what can I say...Great on gas, fun to drive! I bought it used with 89k miles, changed the oil, spent a total of $100 on basic maintenance, and never had a problem with it. TRUST YOUR VOLKSWAGEN DEALER. Before you buy your new Volkswagen, take it to a dealer and invest that $40 to have it checked. They can tell you exactly what needs to be done and what kind of condition it's in. This is the best car I've ever had. When I'm ready for a newer car, I'll definitely buy a newer Jetta. Love it!

This is actually my second MKIII Jetta. I previously owned a GL, but I recently upgraded to a GLX. I absolutely adore this car! It's an absolute joy to drive, and the VR6 engine is fantastic. I even added an intake and performance chip, which made the car feel even better. The stock sound system is also quite nice.
