2016 Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2016 Volkswagen Jetta problems

The Volkswagen Jetta 2016 is a popular car model, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners of this car:

  1. Automatic Transmission Shifting Issues: This problem affects vehicles with high mileage, and it can be expensive to fix as it may require a transmission replacement. The issue is more prevalent in models before 2013 with an average mileage of 123,000 miles.
  2. Engine Misfire: This issue can cause the Check Engine light to illuminate, indicating a failed ignition coil or spark plug. Spark plug wires can also cause this problem. The issue affects 2012, 2013, and 2014 models with an average mileage of 112,000 miles and multiple engine types.
  3. Power Window May Fail: This problem is caused by a failed window regulator, which will need to be replaced. The issue affects 2010, 2014, and 2016 models with an average mileage of 90,000 miles.
  4. General Electrical Issues: Electrical issues have been reported in VW Jettas, but they have been difficult to diagnose. The problem is often caused by a ground wiring issue under the battery. This issue affects many models, including 2012, 2013, and 2014 with an average mileage of 150,000 miles.
  5. Odor from HVAC Vents: This issue is caused by condensation in the heater case and AC system after the car has been sitting idle for 2 hours or more. The drain system on the car should be checked for debris, but there is also a cleaner available for the heat case. Model years affected by this issue are 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 with an average mileage of 50,000 miles.

These problems are not uncommon in the Volkswagen Jetta 2016, and it is essential to address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of the vehicle. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is recommended to schedule a service appointment with a certified mechanic.

  • Summary: Had an accident in Dec where passenger side was hit in the center. The center rail that connects 2 doors was hit so airbags deployed due to roof being pushed in by center bar. But only back airbag had a little air. Front airbag was flat. I took it to the dealer and a month later they are telling me that is normal but I took the picture right after the accident and there is no air in front passenger bag. I told them my child is lucky to be alive. But i know its dangerous if other people are travelling in the same type car as mine. Also bag in the back has a lot of air and no fold creases because it was filled with air. Front airbag looks like it was folded and just fell out and since it has no air all the creases where it folded in roof are still there.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-26
  • VIN: 3VWD17AJ6GM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: When driving above 45 mph, at time the EPC light will pop up on the dash and power will be slightly lost to the vehicle. Almost immediately after this happens, the oil light will pop on despite the oil being changed and done on a beyond routine basis. we have brought the vehicle into be serviced at the Volkswagen dealership numerous times and the same thing continues to happen. Recently, when driving on the interstate the EPC light came on and the vehicle stalled in the middle of the interstate. Luckily, no accident was caused but it was a near miss. This has been an issue since purchasing the vehicle and the oil is required to be changed much sooner than necessary. Volkswagen keeps "fixing" it but it continues to happen but we have paid over $3500 in getting it "fixed." The problem seems to occur at random times but most notably when going over 45mph.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-09
  • VIN: 3VWD17AJ2GM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: There is an issue with the amount of engine oil used. It is burned up at a rapid pace. This has caused my car to malfunction (EPC light turns on). This happened to me driving on the highway it put myself and my passengers in danger as the car would slow down and jerk abruptly. My car has been inspected by a VW dealership. They found no issue on it. However, when taking it to an independent VW mechanic shop, I was informed this is a common issue in this car. They engine oil burns drastically. This has caused me to spend a significant amount of money to replenish the oil level every week. My current situation is using about 3 quartz of oil every 1500 miles! Otherwise, my car will run with no oil which could lead to permanent engine problems and dangerous driving conditions. The low oil warning goes off almost all the time. I was quoted a repair cost from an independent shop of more than $3,000 to fix this well known issue by reconstructing parts of the car to mirror newer models for which VW fixed this problem. This indicates to me VW is aware of this factory defect. Moreover, tons of people are reporting this issue online. I recall is in order.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-27
  • VIN: 3VW267AJ6GM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I got off work and was on my way to the pharmacy to pick up a very critical medication. When I got to the destination I was not able to turn off my car the key was stuck in the ignition and the car was in running mode I could not turn it. I struggled with it for about 20 minutes and eventually had to leave the car running unattended to go in and and get the medication. Thankfully the car was still there when I returned so I drove it to a mechanic and they were not able to turn it off...there were no warning lights that came on to warn me that this would happen, by this time it was after business hours. I was stranded with a running car and no way to turn it off my only option was to let it run and run out of gas so I drove to a wolkswagen dealership planning on leaving it there overnight and letting it run out of gas. When I got there a sales representative was still on site, he could not turn the car off either the key was stuck. He had to kill the battery in order to get the car to stop running. I feel very indenjured driving this car because I don't know what to expect anymore. It was a very horifing evening. I had to figure out a way home with no warning. This is not safe and the malfunctioning part should be recalled...I have done some research online and there have been other people with the same problem and no warning including one of them to be a coworker of mine who had to pick up her daughter from school and was forced to leave her car unattended with the same problem. I am in very much stress over this while the dealership says they want me to pay over $ 900 hundred dollars to fix the problem. There was no warning light it is a malfunction and there should be a recaall this is not safe. Please help!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-10
  • VIN: 3VWD17AJ6GM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: We purchased the car in May 2021, within a week, the check engine light, EPC and oil lamp became illuminated. Contacted dealership who "inspected" it and said "nothing was wrong and reset the lights." A few weeks go by and the same thing. We noticed the car was "stuttering" during acceleration. We attempted to bring it to the dealership they couldn't inspect our vehicle because they didn't have "availability". My husband brought it to a local mechanic who recommended bringing it to the dealership again because of the codes it was throwing. We scheduled an appt which was 4 months out. During that time the oil was changed every 1.5 months because the lights kept coming on. Moved to Mississippi and the issues became worse. The vehicle would seem to lose power while driving on the interstate causing a Semi to veer into the other lane because the car went from 70mph to 20mph in a matter of seconds. Brought it to VW of South MS, was told Timing case, sealant, rail, tensioner, gasket, and several other things were needed to be replaced. Was told the vehicle was burning oil, lower timing cover was replaced and found bolts from tensioner broken and metal shavings. Was charged over $2500. 1 week later same exact issues occurred again. Brought it in, reset lights told us "it's fine" Few weeks of the car not being driven, happens again. We bring it back and they inform us of an array of "new issues" charges us $2000 and within a week the car is back for the same exact issue. I reviewed the recalls but it is saying none of them apply to my vehicle but they are the exact things that are going on. It is unsafe to drive the car. My husband will not allow me to drive it out of fear that it will stall and result in a serious MVA. Why isn't VW doing anything about this issue? How many people have to get injured or killed for them to conduct an investigation for this issue?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-30
  • VIN: 3VWB17AJ1GM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I returned the 1st car I got because it was a little bit too expensive.I started the process of buying a vehicle through carviana a month ago. I returned the 1st car I got because it was a little hard to drive. The 2nd vehicle a kia opitima i received had mechanical issues. the car would constantly try to turn over when you pushed the push start and it wouldn't catch for a good 5 seconds. So I return the optima for a jetta. When I looked at the mileage on the Kia Optima I noticed that the mileage that was showing on the screen was way off from what they posted online. But I figured it was just a one time mistake. Now the 2016 jetta that was delivered on May 24th 2023, came with no headlight, a radio/navigation system that didn't work, the brakes were bad and they used some type of editing software on their photos and blurred out the ripped and torn leather seat. I called and they reluctantly agreed to take it back and allow me to purchase a 2018 Honda Civic. So I cleaned my stuff out from the jetta. I am supposed to meet them tomorrow at 7 PM. I looked at the mileage so I could try to figure out if I was going to owe them any money because I have had the car since the 24th of May. I live right next door to where I work and I only left a few times to go to my father's who lives a 1/2 hour from me. Online carvana stated that this car came with 80XXX miles. When I looked down at the dash I see that the car is at 83XXX miles. Now I have proof of me on camera,my boss can vouch for me, my roommate can vouch for me, my father can vouch for me and I can show on video that there's no way possible that I had time to drive 3000 miles. Carvana puts the wrong odometer reading. And this is now the 2nd car that this has happened with. I bet i am not the only consumer who they have done this to. Carvana purposefully posts the milage as less so if/when you exchange the car they charge you $1 for miles that you never drove.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-27
  • VIN: 3VW167AJ1GM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: - Evap System, it is available for inspection upon request. - The check engine light will not turn off because of electrical wiring due to a faulty connection with the Evap system. It has been checked and there are no leaks and I have been told by three locations that it is a electrical wiring issue. Since the check engine light will not turn off I can not be notified if there are other issues that may cause a check engine light to turn on and my family's safety is at risk because I do not know if it is only because of a electrical wiring issue. - The problem has been checked by three local auto shops who have all smoked the Evap system but have never found a leak and have each individually told me it is a wiring issue. - It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others to my knowledge because the car was sold to me by a dealership anything prior to that event I am not aware of. - They first appeared one week and a half from purchase from the dealership. The dealership said it would not fix it because it wasn't in their books. The check engine light turned on when I turned on the car after that time period. I was not driving when it had turned on.

Negative 2016 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

  1. Gay Gerlach 2024-09-16

The Jetta has a weighty feel when cornering and braking, but it's pretty light when accelerating, which is smooth and pleasant sounding thanks to the turbo. I personally love small turbocharged engines. The accelerator and brakes can be a bit sticky, making it hard to know how hard to press to get it rolling. However, I bought the car for its engine, great price, and 6-speed transmission. The engine is definitely the car's greatest asset and a very important feature. The transmission is mostly smooth, but there have been a few clunking shifts that made my heart skip a beat. I've owned it for 6 months and if it proves to be reliable for the next several years, I'll be very happy with my purchase. I did receive a notice that VW wants to reprogram the exhaust before my first smog check, but I'm not too worried. Other notes: the door is a bit heavy and the rear visibility is poor, so a rearview camera would be a big help. It's smooth on highways, but not great for city driving due to its lumbering cornering. I haven't checked the gas mileage yet, but it better rate as high as they say, which is very high. The trunk is great and the seats are adequate. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and hope it continues to perform well.

Positive 2016 Volkswagen Jetta car reviews

I recently purchased a 2016 Jetta 1.4 S after months of researching new fuel-efficient cars from 2015-2016. I narrowed down my options based on cost, highway mileage (including hybrids), and safety ratings. Ultimately, the Jetta had the lowest overall monthly cost and was at the top of my list. I projected a 0% interest rate for 60 months with advertised sale prices and calculated an average of 37 mpg (3 mpg lower than EPA estimate) @ 50,000 miles a year for the Jetta @ $2.10 a gallon. I compared the same numbers for other cars, except for the mpg, where I went with the advertised estimated EPA highway mpg. I also checked with my insurance company for quotes of similar cars and they were all in the same ballpark. After test driving my top three picks, it was clear to me that the Jetta was the most comfortable, powerful, and fun to drive. It was also the best priced. The EPA mpg is about right. The lowest mpg I have seen was driving roughly 300 miles all at speeds in excess of 80 mph and I averaged 38 mpg. Driving @ 77-78 mph I am averaging 41 mpg, and at 60 mph I am averaging 47 mpg.

My last three cars have been Jetta's . A 2006, 2011, and now a new 2016 TSI w/ Technology 1.4 Turbo. The Jetta's have been the best car's I have ever owned and other than regular maintenance, the most reliable. All have been very economical on gas, and the 2016 has been averaging a little over 39 miles per gallon. Unbelievable power for a 1.4 Turbo. Car is smooth and handles well. I truly believe the Jetta is the best quality car on the market in its class. I would definitely buy this car again. Stickered for over $19K, purchased no trade for $18.2 with tax and title out the door. Can't touch this quality of a car for under $25K.

Hi there! I recently switched from owning Mazdas for many years to my first VW, and I have to say, I'm loving it! The car is absolutely beautiful, especially in red, and I've received so many compliments on it. It's also fast and fun to drive, which is always a plus. Originally, I was considering the GTI after renting one, but I found it to be a bit too expensive for what you get, and the seats were too tight for my liking. However, I stumbled upon the GLI and it was a perfect fit for me! My friend recently bought an A3, but I have to say, I think my GLI drives and handles better, and I have more options to choose from. He paid like 10k more than I did! The only downside is that the piano black trim and instrument cluster glass scratches easily, but that's a minor complaint compared to how much I love my GLI. Thanks for listening!

I chose to lease this car because it was the most affordable option that wasn't a bottom-barrel car. Although I never thought I'd lease or buy a VW, I was pleasantly surprised by its amazing fuel economy. It can go 500 miles on a 12-gallon fill-up, and at an average speed of 75mph, it gets 41mpg. At a speed of 55-65mph, it gets 45mpg. When driving in the city and on the highway, it gets around 38mpg. The acceleration is impressive for a 1.4, and it feels much faster than other 4cyl and most 6cyl cars I've driven. The transmission is fantastic, and the manual downshift reminds me of my brother's BMW 135. The car can take 25-mph curves at twice the speed with no drama. The sport mode actually makes a difference, but it's mostly unneeded unless you intentionally want to drive like a moron or have fun up the interstate entrance ramp. The transmission disengages at stop-lights to save gas but doesn't stop the engine, which is smart. The Helix sub-woofer/amp (about $900 installed) has completely changed the character of the entertainment system, and the iPhone integration is fantastic, especially the map integration. The speakerphone is so good that I hold hour-long conference calls in my car, and nobody knows I'm in a car. The longer I have this car, the more I realize all the things it does correctly, and all the things the other guys, including Toyota and Honda, haven't figured out yet. The cruise control, gas gauge, speedometer, odometer, and MPG calculations in the trip computer are actually accurate, especially not over-stating the MPG like just about every other trip computer I've used (and I've rented a LOT of cars). If the car doesn't have any major issues by the time my 3-yr lease is up, I may actually buy it out.

  5. Mack Schimmel 2024-11-06

This car is truly impressive! It boasts class-leading fuel economy with its new 1.4 Turbo Engine and 6-speed automatic, all while being well-equipped for under $20,000.00. The ride is quiet and the torque is impressive, with the car loafing at 1600 RPM in 6th gear while hitting 65 MPH on a straight road. In mixed city and highway driving, it averages an impressive 37 MPG (running on Premium Gas). If you're looking for a German-engineered sports sedan that's a real sleeper, this car is perfect. It stacks up amazingly well to an Audi A4 from a technical and design perspective, but is priced way lower than the $40,000 ask price for a well-equipped Audi A4. While the Jetta's exterior styling is pretty ho-hum and nothing really exciting or appealing about the generic lines and plain jane front and rear fascias, the engine and transmission are buttery smooth and the fuel economy will really blow you away. Cornering is razor-sharp and you can feel the road when cornering and traversing country roads with all of the proper feedback that comes from sports sedans. VW really designed this car to be a stellar performer at a bargain basement price. It has so much more sports car DNA and solidity still lacking from similarly equipped Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, and Subaru sports sedan models.
